Got my weekly heart attack from BCM
Hahaha!

I got a call today from someone with no caller ID. I answered (acceptance season and all), and a kind voice said "Hi, this is Dr. ___ . "
My heart skipped a beat, thinking perhaps it was the BCM call.

Turned out that he was trying to call a patient and he had the wrong number.

Do y'all think BCM is done sending prematches for IS? I heard they send it in waves and last year they had 3 i think, but things could be diff with the addition of the Temple campus

Last year was their first year and they were testing the process on TMDSAS. Things have changed this year with the additional campus and more seats. The rules allow them to do issue until 31st. If you see February 1st, prematches are done at all schools in TMDSAS.

Does anyone know the last day for OOS As?
OOS applicants are not a part of the TMDSAS match. For you it is rolling admissions from now until presumably the class is filled. Assuming you're waitlisted with everyone else in March, you'd be eligible for an A anytime after that or right when the class is finalized and no more students will be pulled off.

After baylor conducts their “personal preference” survey assuming you matched/prematched into Baylor, how will they actually be assigning students to the campuses if not enough choose temple? Like will they just go through the ranking list and choose the applicants they don’t think as highly of and decide not to give them their preference? If that’s the case, then we can assume pre matched students are likely guaranteed Houston spots (assuming they choose them). Or, the selection process could be totally random? If they’re just assigning students at their own discretion post-match I feel like it adds a whole other layer of stress even if you did match to Baylor.

For what it’s worth I have reasons very important to me as to why I can only really attend the Houston campus. Anyone else kind of in the same boat and doesn’t know what to do ranking wise?

Someone said that Dr. Vallejo said prematch status does not matter. From how Dr. Vallejo talks about it, they want to make the campuses "balanced" meaning demographically and whatever you think of as desirability. I don't think they will just put their favorite students in Houston and those "less desirable (whatever that means because you still got into Baylor at the end of the day" in Temple. They will probably look at what the demographics/attributes look like with the students that chose Temple and mix and match those that chose Houston they feel are needed at the Temple campus to balance out the two campuses.

I agree with this. It's probably not worthwhile trying to predict your chances of ending up in Houston or Temple because at the end of the day, no one knows for sure how the internal match will work.

Thank you! This is really helpful information honestly.

Yeah I guess the fact that no one really knows how the internal match is gonna work is what stresses me out. I really like Baylor but Temple just isn’t really an option for me with my current personal situation and once you match to Baylor you’re basically locked in, especially if it was your top choice.

If you guys go back to this link 2022-2023 Baylor
And read all the drop-downs on the page, there is a very good explanation of how the initial assignments will be made, and how the opportunity to ask for reconsideration can arise if people leave the class in favor of a WL offer.

Where would you go if not Baylor?

I had a quick question, so I got a prematch at UTSW, but I am debating if I want to put UTSW or Baylor as my number one on my match ranking. Let's say I put Baylor, and I matched. Does the choice of going to UTSW go away? Or do I have both available?

If you match to Baylor and it is your #1, you would be automatically withdrawn from UTSW and forfeit your prematch there

Edit: Congrats btw on the prematch!

What they said!

If you match to your number 1 or rank as #1 where you already prematched, you lose all other prematches and dont get to be on any waitlists.

Do we know if a prematch is indicative of any future merit award? If so, when should we expect that information? I saw that some earlier prematches got scholarship.!

No. They give these awards for different reasons like financial need, trying to attract OOS students, or those that they want to attract and not lose to competition. Everyone else, they are admitting and they are admitting a whole lot of them, who cant all get merit awards.

So far, I’ve been making the assumption that if I didn’t prematch to a school but I matched there on match day, I would not be receiving a scholarship.

My logic being, if the school was really trying to recruit me, they would’ve handed me a prematch.

Is this logic completely off base?

Some of the schools wait until April to put together financial aid offers.
Don’t expect scholarships to be as common as in college.

I thought that too until I talked to people at schools who matched on match day (no prematch) and then got hefty merit scholarships. I'm sure it's rarer but not impossible.

They lose some of the people they gave offers to early on and those will go to the next set of people.

Baylor in the past interviewed people based on the grades/MCAT earliest and offered them admissions also very early. However, they waited until April to give scholarships and I know top ranked students who went OOS with money who were never offered any money by Baylor but many who kept the admission as of May 1st did get some money.

Not sure what their current policy is in doling out early scholarships. Last year there was a minority they offered a full ride to who also received lots of money from JHU and Harvard. Guess where they went?

It’s rough that you don’t really have all of the information when you’re committing to a school, although it’s probably very rare that would mean that a student’s match choice could result in them leaving $200k on the table.

Though at this point I’m just happy to have gotten in.

EDIT: I thought I wrote this in the UTMB thread. This comment is completely wrong for Baylor, as far as I know, so please forgive me. UTMB sent an email stating that everyone who prematched is eligible for their recruitment scholarships, which they will notify folks of no later than January 30th (this coming Monday). This does not apply to Baylor.

The last day for any TMDSAS school to make a prematch offer is Jan 31.
We'll see in the next 3 days whether they will send out any more-
Thank you! Three more days of anxiety. LOL

Does anyone know if they are basing any of the forced temple matches on your application? I own a business and that’s on my application and considering they explicitly stated multiple times they want “entrepreneurial minded” individuals in temple, it really scares me. Right now Im thinking Im going to rank at the very least Utsw and Long above Baylor because of Temple, and considering putting more above them as well. Will they let you defer if you get into temple?

Out of curiosity, why is everyone on this thread so afraid of going to temple? It's close to both Austin and Waco so it's not like you're in the middle of nowhere?

Read this again to see your process for stating your preference

And no I don’t think you can defer to try for the other site next year

I think it's a fair concern. Baylor is a well-established school with plenty of connections across Houston with some of the best specialists in the country. As a student, you can join pre-existing clubs and have classes above you to offer you advice and support.

Being at Temple in its opening year means you lose some of those things. If you are interested in a club, it's on you or your classmates to create that club from the ground up. Temple has great doctors, but you will be in the first group of students learning about each rotation without classmates above you offering suggestions and such. Rather than having the city of Houston and its food, entertainment, and infrastructure at your fingertips, you are in a much sleepier area with less to do. Austin and Waco are "close," but not close enough for you to be there often or routinely. None of these things are horrible on their own, but they add up. I honestly still don't understand why they didn't open a separate program with its own admissions team that keeps the Baylor name. Forcing applicants to hope they end up at their preferred campus after locking themselves in through the match is frustrating.

The same thing happened when Mayo started their Arizona campus. It still carries the Mayo brand, cachet, name.

While I do understand why many would prefer to be in Houston, the use of terms like fear, terrified, and afraid in many posts on the Baylor thread seems excessive to me.
