I have been accepted to the Urbana-Rockford track, class of 2012. I was wondering if any current medstudents in Rockford could shed light on things about the campus you like.

Is a car required? Is the campus nice?
What about the rotations?
Is it possible to get rotations in downtown chicago during your 3rd or 4th years?
What do you do for housing, and when should I start looking before it's too late?
How are the facilities?
Are the histo labs done using electronic slides, or are they microscopes?
How much time is spent in class vs. studying alone?

Please answer any of the above, as it will give me and others in next year's class a better idea of what to expect...

thank you!

Preface: I'm only an M1 in the UPR track but I can fill you in with what I know

Is a car required? Yes
Is it possible to get rotations in downtown chicago during your 3rd or 4th years?
You can do rotations in Chicago from any school in the country. That being said aways done at UIC don't count towards your limit of away time so you are able to get more time in Chicago that way.
What do you do for housing, and when should I start looking before it's too late?
Housing in Rockford is pretty easy to find and reasonable, but you won't be in Rockford your first year, you'll be in Champaign and since its a college town alot of the good housing is already gone but you can still find some decent stuff a little further from campus but the sooner the better
Are the histo labs done using electronic slides, or are they microscopes?
Both, we have Histo labs where we use actual slides and microscopes but there is also an online atlas of all the slides used in lab so you can study from anywhere.
How much time is spent in class vs. studying alone?
1st year class is 8-12 everyday and then a lab in the afternoon about 2-3 days a week on average.

Is a car required? I agree a car is required. There are no nearby apartments. Some small rental homes are available on the street directly behind the school, and are generally rented by 4 students each. These houses are a walkable distance, but you'd still need transportation to go the stores. In the third year, some rotations, like Family Practice may be a 45 minute drive away.

Is the campus nice? I think it's nice, built on a large wooded property, but others feel the facility is "dated". It's definitely much less dated than the Chicago campus though. A new addition to the med school is in progress. I don't recall what will be housed there.

What about the rotations? Is it possible to get rotations in downtown chicago during your 3rd or 4th years? I doubt you'd be allowed to rotate in Chicago during the third year, but it's certainly possible during fourth year electives. Spots through the UIC system fill up fast though, and if you want one, plan ahead and apply early. It's also possible to arrange electives on your own through other hospitals and clinics.

What do you do for housing, and when should I start looking before it's too late? How are the facilities? I'd worry about getting an apartment in Urbana at this point. Many leases are signed for the next year by November. There are some new apartments being built right on campus that should be available by then. Check out "Gregory Place East in Urbana, IL ". Also look into Grad Student Housing which still has open spots near the med school building.

You didn't ask, but I thought this was a good place to post the results of the March 17 2008 match list for med students at UIC-Rockford. It's impressive.
