UIC Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That was the main thing that stuck with me--the LOCATION!

All those hospitals around--opportunities abound.

And one of my interviewers, Dr. Vary, left a lasting impression. When I had the chance to ask HIM "Why UIC," he responded, "Because the students give a damn." That made me really happy.

I am really excited about the enthusiasm everyone is showing now! I think the facebook idea is awesome and wanna join ASAP! I am going to definetly be at second look weekend on April 20. How about all of you? YAAAAAAY! I think that UIC offers such an awesome education. As you guys can prolly tell by the million posts I have had about it! Chicago is an awesome town too. I mean I was in Chicago this past weekend and couldn't help but go out of my way just to see campus and Cook County etc. =) I know I am a little extreme!

Hey everyone, I just received notice that I have been accepted to UIC Class of 2011. :D Would anyone happen to know the figures for out-of-state tuition? Thanks!

I believe that the OOS tuition is around $52k. Can anyone else verify this?

Just got my acceptance...does anyone know if the Chicago campus is full yet?
Seems to be. I received my acceptance on 03/02, fedex'd it back and received my third choice. Everyone I know from the Feb meeting so far has received non-Chicago campus choices.

Good luck though!

Thoughts on housing from current students? SSR? Apartments? Prime areas/areas to avoid? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello to the accepted class of 2011. I just wanted to stop in for a minute to congratulate you on your acceptance to the school. If you choose to join us, welcome to the family!

UPR TRACK PEOPLE: A lot of the apartments close to campus are starting to accept applications for Fall leasing. You should come down (or up depending where you are) and take a look around. Call ahead ESPECIALLY if you are coming on a weekend to make sure someone is around to show you the properties. There are a few places on campus for grad students which are right across or down the block from the med school building.

Great reasons!
I was kinda turned off at first by the "lack of spoon feeding" but your perspective makes it a positive thing. Do you know if there's any truth to the "sink/swim" mentality there? Are the faculty easily accessible?

I graduated from UIC about a year ago. Even though I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder during medical school, UIC worked with me and allowed me to continue even though I was having some difficulty with side effects of meds. I am doing really well now and discovered my mood swings were from a hormonal disorder and am off the strong psychotropics. Despite all of these problems, I was able to graduate. I do agree that they will not spoon feed you. But, if you go out of your way to seek help from the appropriate people, you shall find some guidance. If you expect someone to hold your hand, forget it. I know some people who did receive alot of breaks at UIC but ultimately in the end had to quit medicine because they thought the overall medical education system would be accommodating. They royally flubbed out in residency expecting the same treatment. It won't happen.

I did mostly independent study at UIC because it was unfortunate that I was zonked most of the time. My point is with less than half a brain working and less than half the energy that I usually had, I made it through. So, if you have the motivation and the desire to make it, you will at UIC.

I probably was the worst student there at the time. But, heck, I have my diploma and matched in FP. I also give kudos to the place I matched St. Joe's in Syracuse for seeing for who I am and not for my past record.

Med school is what you make out of it. If you do continually flunk though, UIC will show you the door.

I am sure you won't get hit by a zonker like bipolar during med school. If you put in the effort and time to be a good student there, you should make it.

FP

When i was talking to them in November, they had said that Chicago campus does not fill up until end of Dec. early Jan. So i think chances are still good for you guys. I'll definetly be there next year...=) Just a random fact, yesterday i visited UIC and the resident director there told me that between M1 and M2 25% of students undergo severe depression to the point of attempting or successfully committing suicide! Scary huh?

Are you kidding? He was just trying to see your reaction. Geez! Depression is a serious disorder. Don't make light of the situation.

FP

Thoughts on housing from current students? SSR? Apartments? Prime areas/areas to avoid? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I lived in MD apartments on polk and Ashland. If you want to be cheap and have yourself surrounded by stressed out med students who are seeing whether or not you studied more than they do, go ahead, live in SSR. I recommend living near campus but not at SSR. Think about it, you have to see these people for long hours during the day: do you really want to see them at night too?

MD apartments are a rip off but it made me happy when I just walked down the street to the campus each day.

52 k is too steep for any med school. Are you sure you can't go to a cheaper one?

Hi Guys! I'm an M4 at the Chicago campus, so I've (almost) been through the entire UIC experience. If you have any questions, feel free ask! Otherwise, congrats on being accepted and be sure to enjoy this summer!

i just found out i got placed in peoria..anyone else going to be there? don't know much about it since i interviewed in chicago so i'd welcome any pertinent info regarding the curriculum or housing there..thanks!

Random question: Any idea how lenient/strict UIC (specifically, Chicago) is with granting deferrals? I can't seem to find too much information on the UIC website about it...

It's not for any of those reasons generally considered significant (such as an illness), but rather more of the "I might like to just take a year and chill" variety. This of course is not something I *need*, and I've heard all the "thats another year before you're a doctor" arguments--I'd just like to know if it's an option.

Thanks!

Housing is free, Peoria is typical small city. Msg me if you want more info. I'm living in Peoria right now.

Does any one know exactly what happens at Second Look? thanks.

Hello,
I am selling my first year medical books from UIC. I was a 1st year this past 2006-2007, however,I had to withdraw from school recently due to personal reasons.
For my year they changed the curriculum and this is the new curriculum for
1st years. This will be your curriculum for this coming fall. Same classes, same books. Most of the books that students use to study are also the general review books. The books have very few hi-lighting. Like-new condition. Some are brand new and crisp.

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to bump this thread for the next round of acceptances that will be joining us shortly. They're all going through the "Final Decision Made = Good" thing on the pre-allo forum.

Sadly, I don't think I'll be joining up with you all on the 2nd look weekend. I'm in NC right now, and can't make the trip up. But I can't wait to EVENTUALLY get to meet all of you!

Anyone know about good housing locations in Urbana-Champaign?

ANd any OOS ppl get into Peoria?? I was wondering about info on how we can eventually apply for in-state tuition!

Hey all, I'm going to UIC through the Champaign/Rockford track. Anyone else doing the same?

Thoughts on housing from current students? SSR? Apartments? Prime areas/areas to avoid? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so this is my opinion on UIC housing, but this is just an opinion. I'm sure you're going to hear differing thoughts. I live very near to campus, but I do NOT live in SSR. I can honestly say I'm glad I didn't live in SSR. I know some people who seem to like it, and I definitely know some who don't, but I don't know anybody who wishes they DID live in SSR.

I do recommend living close to campus however. It's convenient, it's easy, its close to the UIC fitness center, and you can't use the commute as an excuse to skip class (you'll find enough reasons). A lot of times you'll find you need to come in for just one hour of required ECM nonsense (you'll understand more what I'm talking about next year... sometimes the required things for our Essentials of Clinical Medicine class can seem completely inane) or something as such, and you might hate to drive all the way in for that or spend 60 minutes on the El round trip. The CTA can be a very good thing, but it's not known for it's timely-ness as of late. Especially with the north-side three-track construction... Delays that'll make you wish you were on the Dan Ryan. That being said, if you are the type who really needs to get away, seldom intends to go to class, or you already have a great place in/near the city, commuting isn't that bad, just not ideal. Buy the Netter anatomy flash cards for use on the train, and ignore the nosey neighbors who think the illustrations are disgusting. Also don't forget about getting to campus for an 8:30 am exam. Scrambling for public transportation will not help with any test anxiety...

As far as near campus living, there are a lot of good people to contact regarding these things, Harris Brothers, New West Realty, C Gallucci (sp?)... they all have offices on or very near Taylor St. (harris bros is on loomis just north of taylor), and you can call them and see what's available. One bedrooms are extremely hard to come by, so act quickly. I've found it most enjoyable to live between the east and west campus (although west of Racine). Friends of mine live west of the west campus, because they got a great deal on a great place... sure the rent is lower, but there's a reason property values aren't quite so high over there. Realtors will tell you how it's perfectly safe, that there's more cops, etc. Maybe that's true, but it sure doesn't feel safer. They need a larger police presence for a reason... Being on the east side has it's benefits with being walking (stumbling) distance to all the restaurants/hawkeyes/other bars too. Check craigslist, check the UIC housing website. Listings pop up for people needing roommates quite often.

Last thing and then I'll stop rambling. As far as living arrangements, I was lucky enough to find a place that had two non-med student (yet still quiet) roommates in a great townhome right on Ashland Ave. This is probably the biggest blessing yet, as there are times when the last thing I want is for someone to ask me anything about that past exam, etc. You're going to breathe, sleep, and eat (well, hopefully not. keep your mouth closed when doing a tough dissection) med school next year. Nothing wrong with living with other med students, just be sure you have a place where you can go to get away from it all.

Ombatay

Oh and Tina I want that embryo BRS! Lieska is scaring me with 25 embryo questions on our final!

I was browsing the Rush board (purely for housing purpose, I promise :) ) and some of them mentioned living in the Wicker Park/Bucktown area.

Messing around with CTA trip planner, it seems to be about a 15-20 min bus ride straight down Ashland. I think my search might begin there.

Ombatay--VERY helpful post. Thanks!

Wicker Park/Bucktown is definitely a place I'd consider living first if I didn't live near campus. The #9 (ashland bus) is reasonably reliable and frequent. And luckily its one of the all too few that run all night, although it changes course and doesn't run past North Ave during its very late night hours.

Something to keep in mind about a 15-20 minute bus ride doesn't include the walk to the bus stop, the walk from Ashland to school (about 7 minutes) and waiting for the bus to pick you up (can often be in the range of 10+ minutes). Traffic on Ashland can be pretty brutal around rush hours too since it's a major thoroughfare. (Hopefully) worst case scenario you could be looking at a 45-50 minute commute or so.

Sorry, my intention isn't necessarily to discourage you, just playing devil's advocate. Wicker Park/Bucktown are great up-and-coming neighborhoods, rents are starting to rise in the area, but they're still pretty reasonable. Some really nice apartments that I've seen, and the crowd tends to be around the "just-post-college" age group.

Something else to keep in mind is that UICCOM is making the students vote on what to do about the U-Pass for the next few years to come. Currently it's given to M1's and M2's (for a required, non-optional fee) but not M3's and M4's. The student body is being asked whether it should remain that way, be extended for all 4 years, or just dropped altogether. The word-of-mouth consensus seems to be leaning towards keeping it, but I'll try to keep the message board posted as to what ultimately happens with that. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, the U-Pass is just an unlimited rides pass (CTA only, no metra, sorry) that lasts for the entire semester, and will save you a bundle if you commute via the CTA regularly.

And you're very welcome. I'm glad I can offer any help.

Hey,
I have a couple of questions I have been wanting to ask an M1! I chose the chicago campus as my #1 choice and I have not heard back from the school yet but I have started looking at places to live. My parents are planning to buy a condo. We were looking in the Lincoln Park and River North areas. I really liked the newer condos in River North but I fell in love with the Lincoln Park area. Do you have any advise on how to pick? River North would be a shorter comute but I dont know how much that should affect my decision. How annoying do you think the comute would be? How much are you at school? Would I be really far from where everyone else lives? Let me know what you think!! Thank you!!

Julius Erving summed it up really well! I would be aware of the extent to which they promote Peoria though, i was totally shocked at how much pride they had there. I mean when u see the skool, u think its really not that great at all, but the students seem to be happy and the program they say is comparable to the Chicago one.

Anyone know about good housing locations in Urbana-Champaign?

ANd any OOS ppl get into Peoria?? I was wondering about info on how we can eventually apply for in-state tuition!

Hi Everyone- I'm on the Peoria '11 track starting at UIUC, and let me just say that Peoria's graduates have in the past had higher board exam scores than the other three campuses so clearly it's not a bad educational environment.

I grew up in Peoria and went to UIUC for my undergrad (International Studies with an Int'l Health focus, Latin American area studies, and Spanish minor) so if anyone needs advice on which Realty companies in either location feel free to email me ([email protected]).

In Champaign, I highly recommend the Advantage Apartments (www.advproperties.com) because they are located on the engineering campus (Champaign is full of drunken college kids, vomit, beer cans, and distractions- STAY AWAY), they are fully furnished, affordable, near the Grainger Engineering Library (where you will live 80% of the time), and very close to the medical school. If you don't choose one of theirs, try to find a place in Urbana, you will thank me later.

Any other UIUC or Peoria class of 2011 students in this forum?

Are any of you (UIC or UIUC) thinking about studying abroad over the summer after M1? I desperately want to go back to South or Central America (I studied abroad in Mazatlan, Mexico in college), but I want to be medically related.

-Molly

p.s. Jr, if you want In-state tuition you have to be a legal in state resident. I suggest moving here ASAP since it takes a year to establish residency (or so I've heard.)

I just joined this... how do I delete a duplicate msg?

I did my undergrad at U of I Champaign. I really like the apartment management called JSM. They are slightly more expensive than others but its quality!! They have nice buildings all around campus (Champaign and urbana) and in some really nice quiet locations. I would particularly check out the "Gregory Place" there are 2 of em now and they are above some awesome restaurants and like a 4 min walk from the med bldng. I lived there for a year...and it was the best experience. The bldngs are all witin like 3 years old (Gregory Places).

I'm going to be in Peoria also. Thanks for the Urbana tips, everyone! I am planning a trip out there in May to find an apartment. I looked up Advantage Properties-- but it seems like those apartments are about 1 mile or so away from the medical school? Anyone know of anything closer? Where do most of the med students live?

I spent the weekend apt hunting near UIC. I'm passing along the info on a unit I decided not to take in case anyone else is interested. (It's a nice, clean unit on a quiet street, but I'm looking for something larger.) It's located sw of the med campus, close to the pink line, so you're definitely not in a trendy neighborhood. PM me if you'd like more info.

Here's the original craigslist posting. You can reach the landlord (who lives upstairs) at mkeating51 at hotmail dot com.

$900 -- Beautiful 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 1st floor apartment. This place is a must-see and a great deal in a professionally rehabbed brick 2-flat.
This rear-entrance apartment includes garage parking and laundry in the unit. It has a big kitchen with beautiful 42-inch maple cabinets and a built-in microwave. There's a designer bathroom and ceiling fans in the kitchen and living room. Transportation is very convenient with the Pink/Blue line stop only 2 blocks away. The building is on a tree-lined street and has a nice backyard and patio. The unit is fully wired for computer and cable. The brand new (huge) Pete's Fresh Market is at the end of the block for easy shopping. Both downtown and UIC are only minutes away.

Available May 1.

Location: 2638 W. 21st. Place

Hey everyone, I'm interviewing soon at UIC and had a couple questions that hopefully you'll be able to answer. The first concerns tuition. I was wondering if it is possible to get in state tuition after the first year if my wife is working in Chicago. Thanks in advance!

For all you facebook saavy guys, can someone help me find the UIC College of Medicine Class of 2011 facebook group? I tried searching it up, but i can't come up w/ anything.

Hey guys,

I had a question, I got accepted in november and I filled out all the forms and turned it in. On the online status page, all of the items have been received with the corresponding dates BUT the message at the bottom still states:

"Acceptance and Deposit Received, Pre-Enrollment requirements not yet complete (Please see above)"

EVEN though the "above" states they received everything.

My question is, is anyone else's doing this?

thanks

Thanks for the living advise but I was also wondering what you think about the Lincoln Park area? I understand its a 30 min commute but would it be worth it to live in an area with lots to do? Where do most of UIC students live? My dad is planning to buy a condo so I dont have to worry about rent but we just dont know where to start looking for places.

Jawwad-
Yes everyone's says that until the hepatitis B form, immunization records, and official final transcript are turned in. All that stuff is the pre-enrollment stuff. hope that helps.

I hear you on living in Lincoln Park and living somewhere where there's lots to do. I have a number of friends who commute in from Gold Coast, River North, and some as far as Lincoln Park. All of these friends are people who do not go to class on a regular basis, if at all for anything that's not required of them, so it works out well. If you know in advance that you are not a classroom/lecture learner, then this might not be so bad.

A 30 minute commute makes me assume you'd be driving? It's 30-40 minutes if you live near the brown line and the conditions are perfect (trains on time, etc). Housing up there is definitely a bit more expensive, but it's a more exciting area to live. Is more exciting/more to do something you want or need? I find for the most part whenever I want to get to lincoln park nightlife, or go study on the northside, it's not a problem for me to commute from here (make some good friends with your classmates who live in the area and split the cab fare), and having distractions around every corner may or may not be in your best interests. But most people have more willpower than me when it comes to these things, so who am I to talk =P.

I should state that I'm very biased to living near campus, mostly because I'm very happy here and have a great place. The neighborhood is very convenient, a bar if I need one, great food everywhere, easy access to public transportation, and a white hen down the street (plus it's relatively quiet and cozy). And importantly, the free (and nice) school fitness center is a walk down the street. That being said, if I wasn't in school here, I probably wouldn't be living here, as it can be a bit too low key at times. Lincoln Park/Lakeview(Wrigleyville, esp.) with the post-college crowd does have a good ring to it. I do know a lot who are beginning to show their discontent with being so close to school and feel the opposite of me, so I must reiterate that I am but one voice. A reasonably large proportion of UIC students move to a different neighborhood after finishing M2 year, as the clinical sites tend to be scattered throughout the city anyhow, and there's not as pressing of a need to live here.

My opinion if you're looking to buy though, the popular choice for most seems to be Gold Coast, River North, and areas around there. Maybe even Old Town. Fairly centrally located, coffee shops, things to do everywhere, but there's some good libraries close by also. Try not to go to far north on the north-side, as you'll likely be killed by the commute. Other good choices are Wicker Park/Bucktown for buying, but from there you'd have to have a car. It's a very short drive, but a frustrating public transportation trip if you aren't close to the bus line or blue line. South Loop has great places, and property values just keep going up around there, so it's a great investment in a place. It's also a very close drive, although public transportation is a little ehh down there. Probably quieter than the neighborhood by school though, unless there's a bears game going on. Lastly, I'm sure there's some nice stuff for sale around here, I just don't know anybody personally who owns their place and lives around here. Not sure why.

Hey everyone,

Can someone PM me the budget/tuition info for 2007-2008? The only thing they have online is from 2002-2003.

Thank you! :)

I made a facebook group "UIC School of Medicine, Class of 2011" if anyone would like to join. I'm going the Peoria route and am currently at UIUC.

so did everyone move on over to the facebook group to talk or is everyone just too busy finishing up classes and enjoying the weather?

I gotta say...the weather in the chicagoland area...is BEAUTIFUL!!

The weather is beautiful.. today you mean? Not all the time. :)
Regardless, let's get some UIC Med spirit going here! I'm definitely coming next year (Chicago Campus). What did you all think of the second look visit?

2nd look was fun. But some of the talks dragged on and I got a little bored. But overall it was nice to see the faces of some people that'll be in our class and look at the campus more in detail. I liked hearing the current students' perspectives on things too. Overall it definetly made me think that I made the right choice in choosing UIC.
