LIU c/o 2027

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I’ve heard from a lot of students that the biggest/only downside of going to LIU is the cost of living. Otherwise people have been pretty satisfied with the curriculum/professors/etc. And it’s nice having labs and equipment that are all still brand new as well.

Same! I’ve heard nothing but the best things about LIU. Even though COL is high, I think overall I want to attend a school that is a better fit for me

I'm feeling the same way, all my options left are OOS and tuition wise are the same if not more than LIU, the major difference being COL. Everything I have heard about LIU makes me feel like it is the right fit for me and that I will enjoy my time there. Also, I have always wanted to live in new york for some period of my life even though that isn't a major deciding factor for me at all, it is still there in my mind.

I feel the exact same way as you! Hope we both get good news from LIU soon

Is the provisional accreditation anything to be concerned about? I'm not very familiar with the lingo but if anyone has a better understanding I'd love to hear it!!

Late to this thread but absolutely

I’m defending LIU left and right like I already go there. I really want to get in and wish the best for us all!

I'm still waiting to hear from UPenn but as the weeks go on with nothing from them my hope is dwindling lol

Honestly I was beyond surprised to get an invite today. I think someone dropped their interview because its for next week and I had to confirm by basically today

The saying really is true No news is good news for right now. There are 2 more interview waves for them, tomorrow and next week I think so hold out hope!!! I’m hoping for good news for you, whether its LIU or Penn!

LIU needs to graduate their first class before they can be accredited! I think they’re doing everything they can to educate vet students and help them pass the NAVLE so I’m not too concerned :)

You’re too sweet thank you 🥺

I just got an interview with UPenn, but if I get into LIU, I’m also accepting ASAP lmao

I already got rejected from my other 2
Can I ask why you would pick LIU over Penn? I'm on a similar boat also interviewing the same day as you for Penn! But also waiting to hear back from LIU.

I know this question wasn’t directed for me but personally i’m leaning more to LIU because it actually is a little cheaper than Penn(OOS), according to their websites.

I know this question isn't directed towards me, but I wanted to jump in. Personally, I'm on the other side and I would pick Penn over LIU. The difference in cost is only around 20-30k for the whole program for OOS (which is not a significant difference to me in comparison to the whole tuition - $200k+). Penn is one of the Ivies. I DO NOT believe that students who graduate from the Ivy League schools are "better" than non-Ivy League students, but I can't deny that the networking and connections that you get from going to one of these big schools is literally insane. I remember reading about how 70% of students who go to Ivies are able to secure jobs before graduating because of the connections you get from going to these schools. Additionally, there was a study from Indeed showing that about 77% of employers will give preference and higher starting pays to graduates from "elite" universities.

I think that both LIU and Penn are great schools and I'm confident that they can both produce equally amazing veterinarians, but I would choose Penn simply for the post-graduation networking and employment benefits. To me, these benefits outweigh the 20-30k difference in tuition. The way that I see it...we're all gonna end up with crazy amounts of debt no matter where we go and a 20-30k difference is pretty small in comparison to the total tuition which is hundreds of thousands. Additionally, COL (cost of living) in PA is less than NY. Avg. rent in west-Philadelphia is about $1,800-1,900 compared to Brookeville, NY which is about $2,200-2,300 for example. The estimated $500/monthly difference of COL/rent in PA will already make up for the slight difference in tuition compared to LIU anyways. You'll save about 20k on rent alone living in PA vs. NY.....Overall, I would expect to pay roughly the same amount for LIU and PennVet over the four years...give or take about 10k.

Honestly now I’m not 100% sure. I’ve grown to really love LIU’s community, people say great things about their time there, but theres still so much to learn about them. Its also not fair to compare a 3yr old vet school to a centuries old one. LIU is about 1.5hrs from me while Penn is like 2.5hrs—-my undergrad was 4.5hrs so plusses in my book. My partner made me realize I need to actually weigh my options now.

I kind of got slapped in the face with my invite lol I had no faith in myself this cycle, I’m a first time applicant, my GPA is a little lower and I wrote Penn off months ago lmao. But now that the opportunity to go there has been made a possibility, I do need to sit down and think and compare more curriculum based (COL is basically the same for me). Penn is pulling me a little more because their hospitals get HUGE caseloads, so you see and experience more , whereas LIU doesn’t have a teaching hospital at all. But I do want to talk to someone more about Penn’s new curriculum cuz I’m unaware of it.

TLDR: The shock has worn off and I’m now very confused on where I’d go lmao

@liagonzalez @katecharlize @276dvmtrack , wow thank you SO much for all of that input!! In a way I kind of hope that this choice is made for me because the more I think about it, the harder time I would have picking a school. Penn and LIU are both 1.5 hrs from my home. COL is about the same for me as well. I have heard both great and not so great things about each program. Does LIU give first-years any scholarships or grants for need-based students or is it only loan funded? I feel a little pulled towards Penn because they have more financial aid resources for their students and a teaching hospital, but then disconnected because I have read their culture can be very competitive and "elitist" (not my words, read that online). But LIU is in a beautiful and safe location, but no teaching hospital and too new to know any NAVLE info. Also my partner lives in NY so that's another deciding factor for me. Ugh, can this torture be over already!!

Wait I thought they said March at the interview??? Did they tell anyone it might be February???

Wait I thought they said March at the interview??? Did they tell anyone it might be February???

So apparently March is when everyone should have their decisions, but they’re being released on a weekly basis (so far)

I'm still waiting to hear from UPenn but as the weeks go on with nothing from them my hope is dwindling lol
This isn’t a bad thing! I did my U Penn interview on a Friday and they emailed me on Monday at 8:59 AM saying no thank you. At least you know they’re thinking long and hard about you!

Wait I thought they said March at the interview??? Did they tell anyone it might be February???

They sent out acceptances Thursday last week and Monday this week to a small handful of students….they’re sending on a rolling basis so we’ll hear at the latest by March but possibly earlier!

Does anyone know anything about visiting campus? Will there be an accepted students day sometime soon or is it possible to schedule a tour? Trying to plan ahead in case I’m lucky enough to receive any other offers in the US and therefore will have to make a decision. I know visiting schools is probably the best way to decide where to go, but with having to make a decision by April 15th and still not having heard back from most of the schools I applied to it, will be difficult to plan visits since I work full time and need to request off 30 days in advance if I need to miss work.

I emailed LIU earlier to see if they were still sending out acceptances. I got a very vague reply saying that "applicants would be notified of their status later in the winter". So I guess everyone who hasn't heard anything still have a chance?

They said they’re sending them out on a rolling basis over the next few weeks.

Doesn’t look like they’re releasing decisions today

I am a 3rd year at LIU -- while Penn may have "more connections", LIU has very high quality connections outside of academia. We are affiliated/work closely with hospitals like LIVS, VMCLI, AMC, etc. which are great connections for internships, especially if you are not looking to stay in academia. Penn may be better suited for large animal/equine just due to having more facilities and higher density of populations of those animals, but LIU being close to NYC and being on Long Island has some of the best known veterinary specialists.

In terms of rent, cost does vary a ton, specifically on how many people you live with. Most of my friends only pay ~$900-1200 living in groups of 4, usually closer to $2200 if you're living alone.

You can schedule campus tours here: Admissions Events | Long Island University
I'm a third year at LIU and also on the orientation committee, so if you're ever around Long Island and they haven't scheduled you a tour or reached out whatever, I can give you a tour :) Congrats on your acceptance!!

anyone think they will still send out more acceptances? I don't want to contact them again to ask lol

Maybe today :’)

I've never wanted a school to tell me I'm denied so badly so this horrendous cycle can end, this is so strange to be honest.

I agree. I really hate that they can’t just release decisions all at once, it seems kind of cruel to leave people hanging for so long with no timeline. That’s how it was with Arizona for me. Whatever happens, I’m either going to LIU or taking a gap year and I’m honestly fine with whatever outcome

I'm doing a gap year. this entire cycle was overall quite disappointing, but considering the amount of applicants compared to previous years they clearly were not able to evaluate everyone holistically

Every time I see there’s a new post in this thread I get scared that another wave of acceptances went out and I didn’t get one lol

I believe LIU has a rolling decisions process. My theory is they send them out little by little because they review applicants little by little. They probably haven’t even reviewed all the interviewees yet and are going in small groups where the highest scorers from each review group are accepted. Just a theory, but this might be accurate because I know they do this for their PA program.

I just hope they are honest with us because last year everyone after the first wave of acceptances were waitlisted, so I just hope they are being transparent with us and no stringing us along :/ I really do hope they send out more acceptances!

Same I’m worried too. Especially because they said there would be multiple waves of interviews but then there was only one :/ at least there have been two waves of acceptances that have come out so far….so we know for a fact that they didn’t stick to just one wave of acceptances this year.

Checking my email every single day 10 times a day. Searching "Long Island University" in my trash and spam folders to check and double check that I haven't missed something. LIU was the only school I was eligible to apply to this cycle since deciding to go back to school, and I absolutely won't give up if I don't get in. I am so, so hopeful.

Nothing today? Man this really sucks :/
I hate to be the debbie downer but from my previous experiences, my pessimism is telling me they aren't going to send out any more. I held out hope last year and it only left me upset. This year I'm trying to do more of the mindset others say to have, "think you are rejected, and if you get accepted then it'll be a pleasant surprise" and it helps me stress less in a way. Fingers crossed that they do send more tho!

Is there a thread or a FB group of people who accepted their seat at LIU? Maybe if there was a separate group for the people who have already accepted their seat, we could get a rough idea of how many seats there are left. I know Penn has a FB group for C/O 2027 but I haven’t seen a group for LIU.

I don’t understand why they would just send out 2 rounds of acceptances and state that they would continue to roll out acceptances if they weren’t going to. It seems kinda pointless to just do two groups…why not just all at once? Idk I’m just like grasping for hope. This is my third time applying hahaha I have to be positive or I just will cry

I still feel confident that they’re going to roll out more acceptances tbh. I really haven’t seen that many people posting their acceptances. I understand that not everybody is in these groups/threads but it really doesn’t feel like all 100 seats have been taken based on how many people have posted their acceptances.
