The only two lines that I would recommend living along (for getting to MCW by bus) are the 67 and the 31. Go to http://www.ridemcts.com and look up those two routes, and plan accordingly. The 67 goes along 76th Street once you're just out of the central Tosa area. There were plenty of rental places near 76th and Center, which would be a 10 minute bus ride, tops. If you're going to take the bus daily, living along Capitol Drive or North Avenue wouldn't be bad, because the 62 and 21 are pretty frequent fliers.

Another apartment to look at if you want to be close to campuse is Bluemound Village Apartments. They have 2 and 3 bedrooms are 1.5 mi from school and on the 67 busline. My roommates and I are signing for a 3 bedroom there on monday.

What about the #10? You could live near Wisconsin Ave or Bluemound east of campus. You don't want to go TOO far east, because then you're in the Marquette high crime area, but where I am is quite nice. That being said, I don't take the bus because it's roughly $1.50 each way these days. Bus passes cut the price some, but not that much.

:laugh: That would suck if we all got a hundred. I don't wanna take 2nd year over again!

You wouldn't have to take 2nd year over again. I think they just have you retake the test until you pass (blowing your months of vacation for 3rd and 4th year in the process). That is, unless you fail three straight attempts--then you would just get kicked out of medicine altogether.

So yeah, happy thoughts.

Alright, my young colleagues.

I would really, really, really like this month to be over, and the fact that I only have 13 days that I have to be in the hospital during the next 21 doesn't really help me (in case anyone is thinking that's cush, let me point out that that's 13 days of hospital, three days of lecture, one day of residency workshop, the final exam, and three vacation days).

I am soooo ready for fourth year.

Alright, my young colleagues.

Don't ever call me your young colleague again!

Sorry, just studying behavioral sciences today and thought that role-playing a person with narcissistic personality disorder might be educational.

Way to run with it, stringbean. I was hoping someone was listening to me yesterday. :)

Yessssssssssss

So how goes it on CT?

So you know where we're coming from...

From my score report sheet:

The mean and standard deviation for first-time examinees are approximately 217 and 23, respectively. Most scores fall between 140 and 260. A score of 182 is set by USMLE to pass Step 1.

100 would in this case be a bad thing.

Now a pass is a 185.

At orientation

what will our email addresses be like? i hope they don't use the same way my first college did because it spells out something really silly!

Typically first initial, last name (1st 7 letters) unless there's someone who's already got a similar email, then it's 1st and middle initial and 1st 6 letters of your last name. my summer preceptor from last year still has the best email... it's not the standard formula, but it's still based on his name "ninja" (and Funk, I'm serious).

It depends on where you live. If you're west of school, you can probably find some way to cross Glenview (preferably where there's a school crossing guard if you go at the right time of day) and come up on Portland. You can cut across the sidewalk and get to the visitor parking lot and get to the outdoor bike racks (Not lockers!) that way, with minimal exposure to traffic. I would avoid crossing State Street if possible and certainly avoid riding down it. You can avoid riding on Bluemound or Wisconsin Ave from the west by going one block further north on Wells st.

Area bicycle stores or the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin offer a bicycle route map that has the safer, less traveled roads highlighted.

I think Shannon from our class has a good one. It spells a food, not as cool as a ninja though.

and when it comes to the bus vs. biking, lazy and cheap again have to battle it out. Lazy almost always wins. :p

So it seems as if I will be using the school's health insurance provider--any suggestions on good PCPs?

Hey guys,
What are other 2011 MCW students doing for roommates? I am stuck out in San Francisco and am having a little difficulty setting things up to transition to Milwaukee. I just sent in the roommate questionnaire, are they supposed to send us contact info for potential roommates or something?

After you send in the survey, you get weekly emails with a list of people who want roommates, their phone numbers, emails, smoking preference, gender preference, and pets/no pets policy. Then you can either start contacting people who fit your basic criteria. (There were quite a few people from CA on that list the last time I checked.)

In our health insurance packet they mentioned it takes 2-3 months to see a doctor. I understand that for specialists... but is it still that long to see a family doc? We have less than a week wait where I currently live for family docs. They have made huge advances to decrease their lead time though.

I've never waited anywhere near that long. Don't know where that 2-3 months statement comes from.

Hi everyone,

I will be joining you guys next year at MCW. I have a few questions (not sure if they were already)...Which health insurance is best? I was thinking the HMO to save money, but has anyone had any problems with it?

Also, I am lucky enough to be traveling starting the week after next until mid-July. So, I will not be able to look for apartments until the end of July...I'll be coming from San Francisco and need to book my trip. How long does it take to find a place? I was thinking a few days?

Thanks

I use the HMO... no problems so far except my own clumsiness, medical issues, but the HMO takes care of those.

I didn't get into WI until 29 July. I think my mom and I looked for an apt for 2 days. We had looked online previously (in apt rental sites and the Journal Sentinal site), so we had a basic idea of what we wanted to look at. We also arranged a bunch of appts to look at different complexes/duplexes/etc. Wasn't that bad, there is still stuff left.

Have fun traveling.

Hey everyone,
My name is Hugh and I will be joining you all in the fall as well, living pretty close to the Medical College in Wauwatosa, me and my buddy are both going there and we already have a place. I had a couple questions, maybe to any of the older people here: we obviously want to meet classmates and such, and during orientation they have stuff like baseball games, trip to the zoo, art museum, Brewer's game. I was wondering if these are worth going to or are valuable in terms of meeting people or do people meet during orientation and then go hang out afterwords on their own? Just wondering what everyone's plans were or thoughts were about this

Looking forward to meeting everyone,
Hugh

I attended a few of these events, and I think it's a good opportunity to get to know a few people before the insanity begins. If I recall correctly, in addition to the school sanctioned events, there were informal gatherings at various local bars just about every night as well.

Ha! Look! I'm older. *does a happy dance*

Is today your birthday?

Happy Birthday.

Mine = tomorrow. I'm on call, delivering babies, on my birthday. I thought that would be sort-of neat.

oh, yeah, there was a crew that hit the bars every single night of orientation. I happened to hit the bars a bit too hard the night before I had to be at our 8am CPR class....

A) No, today is not my birthday. You have two months and nine days to prepare for that.
B) I was actually commenting on the person who said his questions were for the "older" people. Too bad I never quote *anything*.
C) I actually knew that tomorrow was your birthday, way to destroy my big surprise SDN postings! Happy 32, my friend. (Remember, I'm the birthday fairy... actually, you may or may not know that. I'll tell you the story when I see you tomorrow!)
D) I have no D, it's just that four items seemed balanced.

Thanks. I's feelin' old.

I didn't know you were the birthday fairy. I'm curious to know how that title came about. I'm also racking my brain trying to figure out how you knew when my birthday was.

I highly recommend the social activities!! Not only the ones during orientation, but also the pre-orientation ones. Like many people, I moved here August 1 and live by myself, so I was really itching to get out. Met some people during pre-orientation that are still my closest friends here.

Happy early birthday Don!! You make me feel so young ;) (I'll be 26 in July).

Don't worry, you're not old.

The grand reason Xandie and I will see each other tomorrow (for those of you playing along at home, in South Dakota, or Maui, or wherever else you all may be), is that it is our final registration here at MCW. :horns:

It's also the first event that I can remember where I was specifically told to arrive knowing my head circumference.

My brother's birthday is tomorrow, but he'll be 23.

psst... look at your SDN profile.

Nice. They need to get the grad berets ready so soon?

27 this year. =(

Oh, and Hugh. I went to the Zoo. They're going to a Brewers game? Not cool! (only because they didn't get us ticket last year, and we, the M2s planning orientation, wanted to go).

I went to some of the social stuff.

so i know this is still a while off... but what exactly should we wear ?? do girls have to wear suits, or can we wear like a dress or something? should our guests wear suits? thanks!!

ah yes...white coat ceremony. what a waste of time THAT was.
