Wow, has anyone noticed that our mods aren't in alphabetical order?? Kinda weird if we're the first class they've done that to.

I spoke with a couple of people from second year and they were not alphabetized. They were told that it was random, but they suspect that there is more to it than that.

Dr Turninkoff said:
actually, it now appears that the class of 2009 is a dudefest in itself. i'm going to assume that you can probably extrapolate that trend across the whole college of medicine. i guess that's why the nursing school is next door.

All you need is one good one (although I have to say that I'm glad to be married) ;)

Yep, you figured me out. The mystery is gone now..oh well. Haha j/k. Gotta love the facebook...i'm an addict. :D

So I was reading the new mailing and it looks like the anatomy text is not Chungs. Does anybody know what thats about?

I got a letter today from my lender saying I was only eligible for subsidized Stafford loans, and not any unsubsidized loans.

This isn't good!

I'll call the financial aid office because according to the letter the school only certified me for $8500. :(
Did you get the medloans with Dollar Bank? I did, and the same thing happened to me. Don't worry. Another letter will come that only lists the unsubsidized amount, and zero for subsidized. I guess they just send two separate letters. :)

I'm in # 32!!!!!

Soooooo excited to meet everybody. It's coming soon!!

got an idea, we should start a facebook/instant messenger contact =)

1. Buy Chung. It's not required as Dr Chung is the course director (I think it might look bad if you require everyone to buy your book and line your pockets). Everything is in Chungs.

2. Don't buy Moore until after the semester starts and you feel like you need it. (I didn't buy it and did well)

3. I would recommend Netter's atlas to supplement Chung's

The blue sheet for supplies mentioned that each mod is supposed to purchase a skull set. Does everyone chip in for that or is better for everyone to buy one on their own?

do the mods resell them to the bookstore? if not, there should be a million skulls from years past around right?

That's usually what happens. There is a little tradition of buying food for the 2nd year mod to get the skull. Those suckers are expensive. Any body in 31 will be happy to know that we have one of the only real skulls. They're hard to come by.

For some reason that just sounds suspicious ;)

I think I know how to get them wholesale from the manufacturer. ;)

I don't know how true it is, but they told us last year that you can't buy real skulls anymore. The plastic ones aren't as good. Btw, Papa Johns pizza is like $4.65 for a large delivered to OU. Four or five pizzas split among the mod isn't much. You won't have to worry about it until the 3rd test block though.

are you talking about the man upstairs or a couple of redneck parents?

Wassup everyone. Man I'm getting really excited about meeting everyone and getting the ball rolling.

So who else is in the kick-ass mod, aka Mod #29. Looks like we have a fairly even mod as far as girl to guy ratio which will be nice. I was looking through that mentor/mentee list and noticed that I went to high school with 3 other students. There will definitely be a Booker T. Washignton High School (in Tulsa) represent at OU med. Good to know that the best high school in the state is well represented ;) .

To oudoc or adsharp, is OSMA/AMA politically oriented? I was planning on dishing out the $28 for the 4 yr membership. Seems like a great deal for a 4 year subscription to JAMA.

I saw several people from my school there too... good ol' OSSM.

Sadly, I'm several years behind some of my classmates. ;)

For instance, a girl that graduated with me from high school just started her general surgery internship this July. :p

OSMA is great, the AMA is relatively neutral. It's a great deal, IMO.

Hey I'm an OSSM grad too ('01). What class were you?

EDIT: So far, I think I've counted 8 OSSM grads in our class, including 2 that were a year younger than me, which is weird considering I went straight to four years of college after OSSM and then went straight to med school.

You're not behind, and you'll realize soon enough, that whatever age you are, whether you're single or married, etc., each has it's advantages/disadvantages. (As long as you're not like 50-something and just starting med school)

Equally creatively, I'm WhoisJohnGalt34. OKC does have a beautiful sky :) I spent my 4 college years in New England, and I'm awfully glad to be back (where the wind comes sweeping down the plains, etc. etc.) :)

Our list didn't mention a stethoscope... does that mean we won't need one? If we do, is there a cheaper place around here to get them than AllHeart? (For comparison, a Cardio III is $121 + $11 S & H)

Damn OSSM, only school that could possibly be better than BTW ;) .

Well, I'm moving in today into the UV apartments. Excited yet kinda scary that the beginning of med school is just around the corner.

So who here plays poker? This summer when ive been bored at home, i just go to partypoker and have been playing hold 'em to make the time go by.

careful with the party poker, they load the deck/hands to take in bigger rakes. if you do a little research on the internet, you will find some scary stuff. ever notice how often you get beat with ace/king or pocket aces?

You probably won't need one, but they do come in handy on your rotations.

fortunately, i only play with the play money (i know kinda lame, but im too cheap). I only like to play for real with friends and thats only if the buy-in is no more than $10. i do have a good friend though, that has lost a decent amount of money from online poker. he is using his med school loans too to play.

I'd go ahead and get one after school starts. Cardio III is an excellent choice. Depending on your rotation, you may be expected to have one. Ex. I followed an orthopod around for a few weeks, and never used it, but then I had an ER rotation, where my attending essentially designated me a "3rd year", and assigned me patients to see. I would've felt like a real idiot if I didn't have a stethoscope.

hey guys, just got back from the prematric program...

It was really interesting! An eye opening experience for me, can't give too much info away though! wink (for those who've done it, you know what i mean, let just say I don't want to do that again hahaha)

Anyways, met 6 of my future kick ass classmates, 3 of them are in my mod!!! whoo hoo
GO MOD 232!

basically, we learned
- how to take a full patient history
- geriatric medicine intro
- common symptoms associated with common diseases of the geriatric population

hey pbeh, let's start a poker ring at the UV buddy.

mod 232 REPRESENT :D

So you were treated as a third year during your first year? How does that work? You don't know anything first year, do you? I thought that our first year rotations would be more like shadowing...

I figured our first year clinical experience would be something like...

*point at person*

This is a patient. Don't hurt them. Now, get back to your books.

Lord, I'm getting tired of this guy. This is the class of 09 thread... which means... if we're reading it, we got in. Therefore, we have no reason to whine about discrimination. Take this crap elsewhere, please.

Perhaps this does not apply to you. It does apply to others. Therefore, your comments are immaterial and naive.

Maybe I should have emphasized that the "seeing patients" role was more oriented to taking a full history and not so much the physical exam, which you learn in your second year.

However, it is perfectly acceptable to grab the oto/opthalmoscope, listen to lungs/heart, etc. It's good practice, and even if you're not sure what you're looking for, the more "normals" you see, the more you'll understand what "normal" looks like.

Doc, my a$$. You're obviously a disgruntled premed who gets off on being a pest.

I therefore make a motion to completely IGNORE this guy. No matter what he posts, just ignore it, and report them to SDN as bad posts. He's already been advised that he's not welcome in this forum, therefore multiple, further posts will be classified as harassment.

..3...2...1.. IGNORE "doc_in_the_box"

So, anyways, are you guys pumped about next week?
Enjoy orientation, it's fun, they treat you well, feed you well, and generally get you off on the right foot.

I am definitely pumped. Nervous as hell, but pumped :) I've got a question for ya- am I to gather from previous posts that we're in a mod with second years too? Is it all years together or just two at a time or what?

Downstairs are the 1** mods for 2nd yr., upstairs are the 2** mods for 1st yr.
Whatever mod you're in (ex. 231) for first year, you'll move directly underneath (ex. 131) for MS2.

Yeah, kinda. You'll always be an alum of that mod. Third and forth years use them some.

So for today, we went through a seminar on teamwork, especially in the multidisciplinary approach to patient care, which is very crucial in the geriatric population! We had a total of 9-15 minutes mini patient care seminar rotation presented by each specialist (speech-audiologist, PA, nurse practitioner, Nutritionist, Recreation Therapist, Chaplin, Physical Therapist, Psychologist, Occupational Therapist and a Social worker).
teamw.jpg

In the afternoon we shadowed in pair a physician…seeing about 4-5 patients by the end of the day.

Some really eventful moments of mine were:

1) The speech-audiologist lady smacking-down on “mean” doctors… haha it was actually pretty funny. It was probably a bad day for her or something man. She said “don’t order us around and expect us to do everything right at that moment when you kids become physicians!” Basically, “be a nice and kind doctor not only to your patient but also to your team members” was her message. I think she had something stuck up her butt if you asked me hehehe.

2) Seeing a demented 80+ yrs old man who tried his best to keep his pride, ignoring his memory lapses, refusing the use of hearing aid, and accepting that his time for him will come soon with a smile.

3) Seeing an 80+ yrs old grandma who had just lost her husband after 61 years of marriage, her little brother and her dog all around the same time…. Yet she talked with an air of confidence.

Went to the BLS class and met up with biendasalud! One cool guy! hehe i didn't know it was you buddy. I was the dude with a vintage yellow shirt/ jeans/ red penn cap :D

Also found out that we have 3 tae kwon do black belts (including me..well I’m a black stripe, almost there) in our class so far. Crazy huh? Did the adcom plan this in advance? We'll we probably train a bunch, right itam?

Well, I was thinking of starting a tae kwon do club to teach new members who want to relieve stress/ learn self defense (like you need any in Oklahoma haha) or people who stopped at yellow or green belts and wanted to keep training. Like one session a week or something... If i have time haha, if u guys want to learn nunchucks, pm me!... :)

Ah yes, get used to being smacked down by laypeople who think they can give advice on doctoring. It doesn't get any better from here. Picking on doctors and medical students is easy because most everyone at one time has been to a doctor. I have never been to a midwife, speech-audiologist, etc so I can't complain about them. I'm now an MS4 and have about had enough of laypeople (who don't even know me or my patient skills) giving me their 2 cents on how I can be a better doctor.

What's really irritating is when your non-med school friends start giving you advice. I wonder if they'd like it if I gave them advice on being better parents.....

Ok enough of my rant. Welcome to OU! You guys all sound really excited and you should be. Med school is actually pretty fun (except test blocks). Orientation is a bit overwhelming so don't worry about it. Just have fun and try to meet as many people as you can. I will give one piece of advice (since I'm not a layperson!) Above all else, be good to your mod mates. If you are upset because you're used to making all A's, and you make an 88 on an exam, don't complain to your whole mod about it. One of your mod mates may have failed the test and not appreciated your "disappointment".

Enjoy the rest of your summer! :)

Our class, same way. I think we have a couple of black belts just in our mod alone. Perhaps the adcoms are planning in advance, how best to deal w/ insurance companies in the future ;) .

This is the truth. Everyone who gets into medical school is used to being at the top of the class and doing well on everything. It comes as quiet a shock when A's are no longer automatic, and B's come at the expense of hours upon hours of studying. Point is-There is a top of the class and there is a bottom in any med school. Those on the bottom were near the top just a few months ago. The change can be a little rough. The best thing that you can do for each other is be supportive. If you happen to make straight A's, don't advertise it-just be happy with your preformance and help those who may not be doing so well. Don't be discouraged at this point. In most cases, grades reflect your work ethic. You determine your grade. Set goals and work just hard enough to get to them.
