NSU-COM class of 2015!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do all the loan options just appear on webstar? I submitted all the required forms and fafsa.is there anything we have to do with outside companies? Also no one has received immunization or physical forms right? I thought most schools send those to new students.

Financial aid will be awarded in May and June. There has been nothing said about a physical, immunizations, etc yet, that I am aware of. Are you set up on Sharklink? Any questions you have are probably answered on the 2015 group.

There are conflicting reports of when the first day of classes are. There is a post above that says that it is 08/01/11 and mentions talking to admissions. However, on Sharklink, it looks like it is 08/08/11.

The concensus seems to be that the white coat ceremony is on Sunday 08/07/11. So is there a week of class before the white coat ceremony or is the white coat ceremony the very first thing? Thanks.

i heard that on august 1st is the orientation. and that the actual classes start on the 8th.

If you go to the medicine tab in sharklink and click the 2011-12 calendar it appears that they have updated the schedule. It now says the white coat ceremony is in fact Aug 7 but still says fall session begins aug 8.

Admissions has told me that the first day that we need to be on campus is 8/7 for the White Coat Ceremony.

Finally! Thanks, I've been wondering for sometime, not that it makes much of a diff. More time to get settled.

we received an email today saying

Academic calendar has been updated and posted on the SharkLink medicine tab. There was an error in the date of the White Coat Ceremony which has been corrected. White coat ceremony is Sunday August 7, 2011. First day is Monday August 8, 2011

hey guys,

seems to be a bit of remaining confusion - classes start on August 8th but does that mean we have an orientation the previous week? Do I remember correctly someone saying the orientation was online? Would appreciate an official answer to this, if anyone knows! thanks.

I swear, admin needs to have a press conference or something...

****'s important, yo.

I talked with a current student and they told me that they had to be there for orientation/class a week before the white coat ceremony. This would be 8/1. I am confused also???

Everything else seems to indicate we need to be there on 8/7.

Hi, I recently accepted to Nova class of 2015.
My girlfriend is currently a 1st year med student at Nova. She has a town house with 2 rooms for rent for the next school year. The house is in a very nice and quiet neighborhood called Pine Island Ridge only 2 miles from campus. She is looking for other female med students to share the house with. If you are interested please contact her at [email protected], her name is Jessica.

Yeah me neither, but they have indeed updated the calendar.

When did the calendar on you guys tab get updated? I don't think they updated mine. It still says White Coat ceremony is on Aug 14th

Doesn't say I can't just copy it so......

Dear Student Doctors, Class of 2015:

I am sure everyone is getting anxious as to what needs to be done next. I hope to address several of the questions I have been receiving. Keep emailing your questions to me and I will start sending out group emails since most of you may have the same questions.
Hopefully this information is helpful.
Regards,
Ellen

White Coat Ceremony:
White Coat Ceremony is August 7, 2011 at 10 AM with a lunch reception following. Invitations are on the SharkLink DO 2015 group. I have copied one below.

The reaming week

Wow that's an ironic typo. She meant "remaining," I think. I hope.

From those of us who somehow didn't get this email, like me, thanks for posting this.

Thanks for posting! A lot of useful information. Not sure why everyone didn't receive this email.

Hey, email from Ellen in case I wasn't the only one confused:

You need to be on campus August 7 which is Sunday for the White Coat Ceremony and then Monday August 8th orientation and classes begin.

Ellen Rondino

I just received this email a few minutes ago from Ellen. I copied and pasted it straight from my mailbox

Incoming Class of 2015,

Hi everyone. I just met with the Student Affairs office and was informed that the Fall Term for first year medical students starts Monday August 1, 2011. Please take note of the new date of August 1 not August 8, 2011 as the first day of orientation/class. The orientation schedule for the first week has not been finalized; they are still working on it. The schedule will be posted on Sharklink DO group and I will see if I can email it to you as well. I have requested that the academic calendar be updated so that the changes are reflected.
White Coat Ceremony is Sunday August 7, 2011. Don’t forget to order your White Coat. The White Coats are handed out during the week of orientation.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. Also if you did not receive the email that I sent last week with helpful information and contacts, let me know so that I can resend it to you.
Thanks,

Ellen

Yes, I just got the same e-mail that Lukat got. And the previous e-mail that some people apparently didn't receive, I got twice from Ellen. Is it just me or do others find it interesting to see Ellen all involved in the transition process (based on the number of e-mails I've gotten from her lately)?

Haha alright, somewhat of a random question ... so where is everyone buying their scrubs? The new email says that after Aug 1st we can wear scrubs, but I dont want to get the wrong ones o_O

I think that the DVD they gave us shows some stuff about it. Suppose to be big.

I got to see the gym a couple of weekends ago...it's definitely a nice gym with lots of different machines. I believe that it's covered through the tuition so you don't have to pay extra for using the gym either :)

On my interview day a few of us hung around after and rode the sharkbus over to the gym and main library. The gym is pretty big, lots of cardio machines, like they literally put a treadmill in as many odd spots as they could. Machines and freeweights areas were pretty good although I do wonder how busy it gets, being such a large school.

gym is included in tuition its open from 6-11 or 12? Medstudent are always playing bball there.

medstudents study in the HPD library, the main campus Sherman library, and the law library. The University Center where the gym is, is open 24/7 with a starbucks so people go there.

I stick to the medcampus and sherman, they have plenty of study rooms to rent for 3hr blocks in the library and the side building. When the library gets noisy i just go to a empty classroom.

There is plenty to do in ft.laudy. The beach is 10-15 minutes away, las olas has tons of bars and restaurants. Hard Rock casino is 5 minutes away and has a bunch of clubs, restaurants, comedy shows, concerts, etc. Not to mention Miami is 30min south with enough to do in 2 lifetimes. But you guys will have plenty of Studying that will take up all of your time.

Are there any intramurals for med students? Beach volleyball?

How far was it away from the main campus? A busride required? I think I walk like 10 min to the Philadelphia right now.

We are just suppose to buy scrubs from anywhere??? I thought they were going to give them to us or we order them from the bookstore. Maybe they will send us an email latter telling us where to get them from.

Ah, well...Didn't know about that. In any case if they send us info (and provided there's no monogram), I'm going with the cheapest option.

Ya I dont know if they will, was just wondering. I found some cheap scrub sets on allheart.com

alot of people have cherokee.. some of the girls buy the greys anatomy ones. make sure they are CEIL blue.. so u dont look like an idiot first day. Bookstore has scrubs, but are more expensive. Scrub tops say NSU Osteopathic Medicine.

yes there are intramural.. i mean its threw the gym i guess..set up a team and sign up. Gym/main campus is walking distance but way easier to drive/take bus

The university center (has gym in it) is a about a 10 minute walk away from the HPD building. You could ride the shuttle if you want or park your car in a nearby lot.

Hello, spoke to Ellen yday and she said that people can get scrubs from wherever they want as long as they are "hospital blue"

I spoke to Ellen yesterday and she informed me that we can the scrubs from anywhere, as long as they are "hospital blue"

Thanks for the info! I found a few places in the area by searching "uniforms" in google maps that sold scrubs if you want to look at them and try them on such as "http://uniformsforamerica.net " and "http://www.ascotuniformsusa.com .

Do most M1 / M2s wear sneakers or do most wear clogs or something? I was looking at getting closed top crocs but don't want to look stupid if no one else wears them.

awww I wanted to order some cool crocs :D I guess my adidas sneakers will do.

Am I the only one that thinks crocs really aren't all that comfortable?

I've never worn crocs so I can't really comment on it. I love sneakers though.

anyone got any info on the gym? :p

the only thing there may be a wait for is the deadlift platform. sometimes there are guys who like to use it to skip rope or dance workout for like 20 minutes at a time. other than that, i don't think i've ever had problems getting on weights or equipment even at the busiest times.

Fantastic to hear! I remember it seeming a little tight during the visit but I wil take your word for it. If we show up a week or two before our first day, how likely do you think it is that we will be able to convince the guys at the front desk to let us in? Idk if I can go that long without losing my mind.

On an unrelated note to you other gentlemen, crocs are for dorks.
