2019-2020 Ohio State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone know how easy it is to obtain state residency after 1st year? I know at the interview they mentioned how some students don't claim it successfully. I also wished they would have emphasized that tuition goes up 50% in year 3 and year 4. I don't think I would be able to afford a $114K cost of attendance year 3 and 4 if not given state residency.

As far as I know, the process is the same for all public schools in Ohio and the financial aid director at University of Cincinnati made it seem like a very easy process. He said of current M2s only 2 who attempted to get in-state weren’t able. Also I don’t think this is a one-time thing. So even if you aren’t able to get it for M2, you should be able to rectify things in time for M3.
Not exactly an answer to your question but hopefully helpful!

This is for the U of Cincinnati but I imagine it would be the same process to apply.

At least in Maryland to be considered a resident you need a license from the state and to have filed a tax return for the state.

May I ask when you were complete? I was complete in July and haven't heard back. I don't know if they're still sending invites to early completers.

I was complete towards the end of July.

From what I hear most people in the current M2 class who applied got it, and those who didn't were able to amend their application materials (if something was missing or unclear) and still able to try to get in state tuition for M2 year. I am in the process right now and basically you can't leave the state for more than 30 days and you can only use funds that were taxed in Ohio (loan money). You have to submit a bank statement with the amount of money you have at the beginning of the year and at the end to prove you didn't use "ineligible" funds. It's a little inconvenient, but certainly worth the saved money! There is a whole lecture on the process during orientation week but it seems that most people get accepted for in state!

Does anyone have links/websites where OSU College of Medicine apparel can be purchased? Lol

At some point (don't remember when) there will be a link sent out to purchase merch through student council. The link was sent out at some point over the summer and the merch was delivered in the fall. I am not sure whether there is a way to get it earlier, but this is what I did!

Yes, they are very receptive to updates and interest letters. I want to say they usually only will take letters of intent post interview (not certain on this), but they definitely accept updates and interest letters at any point.

I had the same problem with my application last cycle. I am not totally sure if this will work, but if you log on to buckeye link (using the name.# they assigned you when you filled out your secondary application and password you set), I believe there is a section called application materials where you can view your application materials. If this doesn't work I am not sure how to view the application either

Yes and wanted to add to the above comment that if you log in to your Vitals account they have a blurb about accepting updates and the email that you should send it to.

current osu undergrad, mcat 515, gpa 3.8, still waiting for an interview... how long should I hold on to hope?

Anyone accepted today off the deferred list or did you all interview recently?
+1 deferred on 2/11. not sure if there’s a pattern for movement off the deferred list, but according to last year’s SDN thread, it seemed there was a lot of movement in April once interviews ended. I’m sure a current student can speak more on this!

Yep, you're correct. I've talked to a few students who were accepted off the waitlist throughout the year but overall, it seems like the majority of waitlist movement came after interviews were over. If I remember correctly, there was a large peak around May 1 because that's the date when you're supposed to let one school know that you plan on attending, so schools find out just how many spots there are to offer to waitlisted students. I didn't get off of the waitlist until June so it can be a long wait but there's always hope!

Congrats to all that were accepted!! To those on the waitlist/those who have not received an interview, there is still time. Keep your heads up!

I applied later in the cycle (completed secondary late September) and haven't heard anything. I'm in state and still hoping I'll hear back for an interview in the next few weeks before Interviews are over.

Did anyone else apply that late and hear anything back?

It was honestly a confidence issue that prevented me from applying sooner, but I may have lost my chance by waiting as long as I did

Last cycle I applied mid September and ended up with an interview at the end of February. I don't know how common it is but it can definitely happen!

Sorry, I am new to SDN and I will be applying next year. Did you apply early and what were your stats like? Im a little nervous bc OSU is one of my top choices.

I applied mid-November, II mid-December, attended interview mid-January and now accepted. They definitely look at late applicants! Don't lose hope!

According to MSAR, the 10th percentile MCAT for accepted applicants is a 508. There are definitely applicants with your score who are interviewed AND accepted.

Hi guys. I will be applying in 2021. I was just wondering if my stats were okay to apply to OSU?
CGPA: 3.76
sGPA: 3.6
MCAT: 522
Extracurricular activities: 2 internships, 1 year of research (9 months wet lab, 4 months Human trafficking research), will be doing another year of research during gap year
Clinical Experience: worked in a health clinic as a referral specialist (scheduling patient appointments and served as the Membership Director for the internship program). Almost 80 hours of shadowing. Almost 200 hours of volunteering in pediatric hospital. Almost 100 hours volunteering in local and on campus food pantry.
Served as a students instructor for biology for 1 year
Leadership positions: 3 exec board positions for 3 students organizations and membership director for clinic's intern program.
Little concerned because my last two years of college weren't that great bc I had family issues, so I received a B- in biochemistry and microbe. In the fall semester of my senior year, I took an endocrinology class and got a C+. But my final semester, got all As. But I worked by butt off for the MCAT. Is it okay to have some bumps in the grades? Should I consider a post bac?

I would say no post bac. Just take ownership of the blemishes, show how you have changed (MCAT is a good indicator), and have a solid narrative when doing your application. Show don't tell. You will be fine.

Hey guys! Is there a specific curriculum for the four years available to us? I know there’s information ~about~ the curriculum and the modes of learning we’ll be doing, but I couldn’t find a schedule for when we’ll be learning specific systems like other schools have... i just wanted to double check that there isn’t one available

And does osu have an iPad in the tuition?

Also, following the logic with how people will be graduating and leaving in May, more housing options will be available after that time, right? If anyone can answer anyone of these questions, I’d really appreciate it!!
