Officially withdrew from other schools and heading to Keck :)
Expensive, yes. But I have a feeling it'll be worth it.

No one, and I mean no one, pays $1200 / month for rent + utilities. You would have to be living in a swanky 1bd / 1br downtown apartment to be hitting those kinds of numbers.

Rent + utilities ranges between $600-900 for your own room & bathroom, depending on where you live, and how many people you live with. Source: I've managed rental properties in the area for the last few years.

Transportation can certainly vary depending on your vehicle, driving distance, and parking options. Parking can be expensive (Biggy structure ~$400 / yr) or FREE if you're willing to walk 10 mins from the free parking lot (Lot 10). Some people live next to school (City View Terrace) which is close enough to commute via bike. Most people live 8-15 minutes away (driving) in Monterey Hills, Alhambra, or South Pasadena.

Food & personal expenses can also vary wildly as well. Downtown can get scary-expensive. Alhambra is uber-affordable.

Insurance can be waived if you have separate coverage. You still have to pay ~$500 for health care access even if you do waive the student health insurance plan, but this fee includes unlimited office visits, exams, etc.

Is USC expensive? Absolutely. When compared to the vast majority of private institutions (assuming no differences in financial aid), it is quite typical.

Hope this helps!

This makes a lot of sense. Most private med schools are around $42-50k per year for tuition/fees and even state schools if you're OOS. Even Mayo, which was historically one of the most inexpensive private medical schools, now costs $43k in tuition. Makes me feel much better about the cost of going here. Doing some research about Income Based Repayment makes me feel better about taking out all these loans. And if I decide to do primary care, there are public service loan forgiveness programs and if I choose to do a specialty, I'll get paid enough so that I can pay back my loans more easily.

So I'm not as concerned that much anymore about cost but excited to be accepted to such an amazing institution!!! Good luck to everyone waiting on the waitlist. This price shock might make it more likely for significant waitlist movement.

You are double counting people. There are only 157 graduates. Some have to do a preliminary program before they do their categorical program (year 2 of residency).

whoops

+1 on the cost. I also withdrew. Good luck everyone!

I feel increasingly hopeful with every post on here where someone says they're withdrawing...every one takes me a step closer to realizing my life-long dream :xf:

my thoughts exactly. you guys waiting to send a LOI until May 15th?

Considering how insistant Dr. Arias was about waiting to send LOIs until May 15th. Yes, yes I am.

Members don't see this ad :)
I have a few n00b questions about LOI's.

Do you send the LOI to the admissions office email address or Dr. Arias herself?

Also, who do you address the letter to?

Would you attach the letter as a word/pdf document or include it in the body of the email?

I would email it to [email protected]. Address it to Dear Admissions Committee. I would attach the letter as a PDF document. Maybe you can put the letter in the body of the email if you include an introduction saying to send the following letter to the admissions committee.

Does anyone else have anymore information to share???? Any more withdraws??

I withdrew from Keck =(. For anyone interested, the facebook group right now has about 184 people...numbers are dropping. Good luck all.

Lets get real. US news rankings barely ever budge dramatically. Getting two famous scientists isn't going to bump the ranking up from 30 to 10.

yeah maybe but med schools don't care about US news as much as say law schools. it's not just getting two famous scientists though, it's getting the whole department which was considered the best in the country..

They're getting 110 staff to switch over along with an increase of at least $12 million in grants. I think it'll budge. It already went up 7 spots this year and by the end of their $6 billion plan by 2018, it'll probably go up even more

It was apparently 34 in 2011. Plus as you get higher in the rankings some of those top 20 schools will never budge. That's the way things are and always will be. John Hopkins, Harvard , UCSF will never budge.

Well, yes. It's true those schools will always be above other upper-tier schools but IIRC, Yale used to be number 1, now it's 7. These things can change.

well uc schools will go down if they keep getting raided but like I said med schools don't care about us news. many students don't pay attention to it..

I will say one thing though no school has moved forward in expansion and hiring new faculty and buying hospitals than usc. about to acquire a new one.

Also, as a point of reference, in 2007 Mount Sinai was ranked 30. Then they set out to improve their standing (and dumped tons of money into the initiative). In 2008, they ranked 23 and now they're ranked 18. USC seems to have set out to do the same thing and is also following a similar trend. (Toga and Thompson aren't the first "leaders-in-field" to be poached by USC - it's just that this is the largest exodus away from a university)

Conversely, in 2007 Baylor was ranked 10 and, after a bit of a fiasco, is now ranked 18.

I think medical schools do care about their rankings - USC, for one, advertised their progress on the us news list on its website. The fact that USC is gaining momentum provides the university fundraisers a good platform from which they can convince donors to get on board. It's all about the money, isn't it? ;)

ALSO, USC's current financial plans include investing $1.5billion to the medical school alone. http://campaign.usc.edu/campaign/school-and-unit-goals/

well I do think they are paying attention to it some because they have to but I was saying relatively speaking.. law schools for example live and die by them..

by the way there should be people getting off the waitlist soon I think I mean I know a ton of USC undergrads that have been accepted but have just recently decided to go elsewhere.

Withdrawing my acceptance. Good luck to all those on the waiting list!!

Just got a call from Dr. Arias today and accepted!! I was one of those who got the wait list call back in late march. Interviewed late feb.

I did too! We probably interviewed on the same day :)
I also received a call from Dr. Arias in late March. Looks like today is a big day!

This is the happiest day of my life. Dr. Arias just called to tell me that I'm accepted. I'M GOING TO MEDICAL SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats! Hopefully the rest of us waitlist-ers get good news soon

Did you all send update letters? I've been holding on to mine waiting for Wednesday like Dr. Arias instructed, but if people are already getting accepted.... :scared:

Also got the call from Dr. Arias earlier today!! I'm till ecstatic to be going to Keck. See you guys there. And good luck to those on the waitlist - I hope you guys will hear good news soon enough!

they didn't send update letters. They were just probably a specific group of people who were at the front of the line on the waitlist. Dr. Arias called them back around late March I think to notify them of their status after the interview. Look back on previous posts- it'll make sense.

Congratulations to all those accepted!!! This week is going to be an exciting one :)

so it looks like the people who got called/emailed were indeed at the top of the waitlist, as some of them are getting accepted before May 15th. Kind of a bummer for the rest of us, but hopefully there are enough withdrawals to give us a chance.

Come on USC!!!

So for those who were called today. Have you received any email from USC where it tells you how to confirm your spot?

Edit: nvm, just got the email haha

Come on USC!!!

I did not receive a phone call post interview (interviewed Jan 8), just the standard wait list email, and I was called this morning by Dr. Arias informing me of my admission. So clearly I was at the top of the wait list too, but got no special wait list call.

I think there will be quite a bit of movement after May 15, so don't get discouraged. I thought I was in the bottom of the barrel too because I didn't get a personal wait list call.

But see, this worries me because I DID receive the call in March, but I didn't get a call today. Does anyone ever get the feeling that all our speculation is utterly futile and that this process is just completely random?

I get that feeling about 10 times a day, but of course it does not keep me from speculating about 20 times a day.

i got the waitlist call in march but no call today. what does this all mean!??? lol
