Interview Experience -
Program: Saint Louis University
Location: Saint Louis, MO
Travel: I am a local candidate, so no travel. But the University hospital is easily accessible through the metro rail system from the airport. They also have an hotel called water tower inn on the campus, which is supposed to be decently priced.
The Hospital and Facilities: They have separate services for general GI, Hepatology and Biliary. The fellows rotate on all the 3 services. The first year fellow rotate on general GI service for about 6-9 month, VA for 2-3 months and 1 month of research. The second year has 3-4 month of general GI and Hepatology floor. The rest of the time is divided between research and electives. The third year ha 2 month of Hepatology and 2 month of biliary and the rest of the time for research and electives. The place is well equipped. They have new HD scopes with narrow band imaging.
The Interview: Very relaxed and laid back. There were 5 half an hour interviews.
Didactics / Conferences / Other Teaching: They have conferences on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The conferences include pathology, Journal club, research conferences and core curriculum conferences.
Staff/Attending: The staff at this place is very friendly and stable. There has been almost no staff attrition and they have added new staff members in the last 2 years.
Call Schedule: First years are on call for 12 months of the year. The call is Q3 if you are at the university hospital and q weekly if you are at the VA as you share call with Washington University fellows.
Moonlighting: I do not have any information on this aspect but it is practically impossible in the first year.
Special or unusually good aspects: The program is heavy on hepatology which is good for me. There is also a lot of research taking place at the institution and the fellows will have ample opportunities to take part in the research.
Red flags: N/A
Notes: The fellows were all happy and satisfied with the program. They all get ample procedural experience.
Hope others follow!!!
