Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) Discussion Thread 2016-2017

Do you think students who are in PBL and do not get to work on a cadaver are looked upon negatively by surgical residency programs?

Hey cool, thanks for letting me know. There were a bunch of people in LECOM threads on here (previous years) saying that getting "Your application is under review" on portal after interviewing meant rejection, and based on those threads, this was not a very common portal status post-interview. So just to clarify, you got specifically that "Your application is under review" message after your interview?

For example, here's just one quote (Lake Erie (LECOM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016):

"Based on last year's thread, it looks like if your portal changes to "Application Under Review" after an interview it means a rejection letter is in the mail. I genuinely hope this is not true for this year. I was really impressed with LECOM and would be very happy to attend"

There's actually a lot of discussion of this in the last few years' threads, so that's why I was stressing over that message.

I got that portal update after my interview. I think the confusion is because I think Bradenton does it differently. I am just talking about Erie. Also, prior to the interview, they say "your application is under review." A lot of people never get an interview and their portal stays that way. But if you got an interview, you WILL get a letter in the mail and the same portal updates.

Hey guys does anyone know whats a good number or email to contact to check requirements? I turned in my letters 2 days before my interview I forgot to check with their office the day of my interview to see if they're in. :(

Does anyone have recommendations for apartment complex's to rent from? I am planning on making the trip to Erie at the end of the month to look at some options and make a decision?

I don't think you need to call in to check. You just go to the portal, then click on the admissions tab > Required Letters and Credits > View Folder Items. It will tell you which requirements you have met and which ones they are still waiting for.

Not interested in surgery myself, but I know fourth years from Seton Hill who matched into surgery (and one into urology) so I don't think this is a huge issue. I'm not the biggest fan of the PBL anatomy curriculum, but I didn't feel like it held me back when I did my surgery blocks.

Mind if I ask what your portal status said before it updated to "decision made"?
I don't remember the exact quote, but it said something like, "Thank you for interviewing, you will be notified when a decision has been made"

I interviewed 3/16 at Seton Hill and my portal changed today
Got my letter yesterday that I'm in at Seton Hill. Pretty sure I'll be attending there unless I get off the MD waitlist I'm currently on.

No I interviewed 3/16 and was accepted on 3/22, letter received 3/27
Wow that's very fast timeline. I hope that's how mine goes too. Would you consider yourself a very strong applicant? It seems like people don't hear back for like 30 days until after their interview.

Not very strong, only 2 interviews out of 25 secondaries. 3.25 gpa with a huge upward trend and 513 mcat. Pretty nontraditional.

Great MCAT tho! How did you know you were accepted before the letter came? Did you call?

Oh okay. Did you get a text message from LECOM the week after your interview to notify you of portal change or anything?

Hey everyone, I received a portal change on 3/24 after my 3/10 interview in Erie. Does anyone know how long it takes to receive a letter in the mail?

Most people said it took like a few days, but it depends where you live. Based on what I've seen in threads like 3-7 days from the time a decision has been made.

I interviewed on 3/24 and I just got a text today saying "We were pleased to meet you at your LECOM Erie interview. We will contact you soon with a decision." But my portal status has had the same "thanks for interviewing at LECOM" since right after my interview. So I'm not sure why I got a text today saying basically the same thing as my portal status even though nothing changed.

Same thing happened to me. I got a portal change a month later

I interviewed on 3/17, portal updated to "your application is under review" and stayed there. Today I got a rejection letter in the mail.

cGPA ~3.7, sGPA ~3.8, MCAT right near their average

I also felt like the interview went really well, I talked more than anyone else in my group though was careful not to be rude. I was late to the initial presentation thing by around 3 minutes due to a freak accident so I don't now if that may have been a factor.

Sorry to hear that, I interviewed that day as well. So, your portal never changed to "a decision has been made..."??

Nope, never changed. It's just weird that I have a GPA well above their average and I felt like I did pretty darn well in the interview. Ehhhh.... wasn't meant to be. Apparently a few years back they accepted a guy so deranged that he not only was busted with child pornography, but had a plan in the works to "breed a family of sex slaves"... True story. So I don't feel too bad about their negative judgment of me. :)

I was accepted to LECOM-E for LDP today. I am also waitlisted at VCOM-VA and CUSOM, my first and second choice of schools.

I am a little concerned about how well LECOM-E prepares its students for clinical education. Any insight?

Congrats on getting accepted. Mind if I ask what your stats are?

This is not the best coping mechanism. Ask for feedback and prove them wrong next time should you apply again.

Does anyone know if all waitlist letters are the same? I received a letter in the mail yesterday and it said the committee looked favorably on my application and may be able to offer me a seat up until July. I didn't know if every waitlist letter said the same thing or not, so I didn't want to get my hopes up for nothing.

I believe they are.

Were you waitlisted prior to this letter and then recently received this letter? Or was this your first decision letter from LECOM from your interview?

This was my first decision letter from LECOM after my interview.

So did pretty much everybody here have a physician LOR? Because I only had my pre-medical advisor LOR and 3 professor LORs (which I know are very positive). You think that may have been something that led to a quick rejection?

This is not the best coping mechanism. Ask for feedback and prove them wrong next time should you apply again.

So asking politely for feedback is something that's common and schools usually will respond? I emailed an Erie admissions coordinator asking for feedback last night and no response at all today, might try someone else Monday. Because I really need feedback for when I (God willing) interview in other schools next cycle.

According to their website, a "letter from an osteopathic physician is highly recommended." I submitted a DO LOR and was accepted.

Also, I don't think they usually give feedback. Before I was accepted, I thought I was going to be waitlisted so I asked things I could improve on. They said that information is "confidential" and they do not give that out. Of course, it may be a case by case thing. Who knows. Hope this helps!
