Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) Discussion Thread 2016-2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey, I was in the 3/17 interview in Erie and no change on Wednesday for me. Today my admissions status changed to "Your application is under review", like it said before getting the interview. Yours have any change yet?

Anyone else get this "under review" status after interviewing?

My portal hasn't changed.

Nope, never changed. It's just weird that I have a GPA well above their average and I felt like I did pretty darn well in the interview. Ehhhh.... wasn't meant to be. Apparently a few years back they accepted a guy so deranged that he not only was busted with child pornography, but had a plan in the works to "breed a family of sex slaves"... True story. So I don't feel too bad about their negative judgment of me. :)

Also, this is kind of a weird thing to bring up. If you would of been accepted, you never would of posted this. LECOM requires all students to undergo an in depth background check and drug screening before matriculating. My background check even searched local county records! This could happen anywhere and I'm sure if you search hard enough, you kind find freak stories like this for several other schools. I don't believe this is any reflection on the committee's selection intelligence.

Additionally, from what I'v seen, LECOM is very big on healthcare experience and personal interest. They are also heavy on GPA but lighter on the MCAT. Almost everyone in my interview group had some sort of healthcare experience such as being a scribe, ER tech, CNA, etc. I believe they try their best to look at the "whole applicant" just like the DO philosophy. Anyways, I hope this helps. It's a rough rode applying to medical school and we have all been in the same boat here. I would be happy to answer any questions you have.

I was accepted to LECOM-E for LDP today. I am also waitlisted at VCOM-VA and CUSOM, my first and second choice of schools.

I am a little concerned about how well LECOM-E prepares its students for clinical education. Any insight?

Congrats! As far as your clinical education concern goes, from what I'v heard, I think LECOM is strong in that area. I actually work with a doctor who had his residency with a couple of LECOM grads. They said that they were some of the best in the program and seemed very well prepared.

Also, I think LECOM prides themselves in early clinical exposure. There is a Facebook group with a question list posted and I believe a current student answered a question about LECOM's clinical education.

Have you heard of anyone being accepted with an MD letter instead of a DO?

I've been accepted to LECOM Seton Hill. My letter of recommendation came from an MD. Honestly, I don't think it's something that will keep anyone from getting admitted on its own.

I agree. I think having a DO letter helps but as long as you have a letter from either an MD or DO I think you're fine.

I had an MD letter; I got a DO letter much later in the process (for other schools) but had MD letter for the LECOM interview

So did pretty much everybody here have a physician LOR? Because I only had my pre-medical advisor LOR and 3 professor LORs (which I know are very positive). You think that may have been something that led to a quick rejection?

So asking politely for feedback is something that's common and schools usually will respond? I emailed an Erie admissions coordinator asking for feedback last night and no response at all today, might try someone else Monday. Because I really need feedback for when I (God willing) interview in other schools next cycle.

I did not have a physician LOR and I was accepted. My letters were from two people I did research with and 2 from professors. I do not know if lack of a physician letter has a negative impact or not, but it did not seem to be an issue for me.

I did not have a physician LOR either, just two science and one non-science professor and was accepted.

has anyone heard back from the 3/1 interview or after (interviewed at Seton Hill)? my portal still says congratulations, you have been selected for an interview....

I'm on the same boat as you and it's stressing me out

I interviewed 3/24 and my portal got updated on 3/28 to "The Admissions Committee has made a decision on your application. You will receive an official letter in the mail within 30 days." I haven't received anything yet. How long did it take for you guys to receive mail from LECOM?

If your portal changes to a decision has been made can you call and ask what the decision was before you get the letter?

No, you have to actually have the letter. In some specific cases, they will scan and email you the letter but usually they tell you that you have to wait.

Is LECOM still interviewing? Has anyone from the waitlist been called off the list yet for an acceptance?

Yes they are still interviewing. I would expect their waitlist movement is a bit later since their interview season ends later, but I could be wrong.

Accepted to PBL at Erie! A little nervous from hearing about PBL's "steep learning curve", but I think once I get the hang of it I'll love the flexibility.

A few questions:

I read that the PBL groups are 8 students strong. Do the students in these groups alternate, or are you bonded with the 8 students you start out with?

The dress code just describes "shoes". Are any kind acceptable? I was thinking of getting some long-lasting goodyear welt boots, is that okay?

Are there any apartments/homes we should definitely avoid? In some of the med school Facebook groups I've seen, students have been good about warning incoming students of bad places.

One thing I noted is that the faculty who spoke to us at the LECOM interview were particularly dire concerning the DO/MD residency merge, fearing things like anti-DO bias. Other schools I've interviewed out were far more relaxed about it. Can any current student tell me about the atmosphere surrounding the match on campus? Is it tense?

Thanks!

Congratulations on your acceptance. I'm a first year PBL student and you're right, the learning curve is steep. But once you get through anatomy and "PBL lite" the advantages of this pathway are really worth it.

A few questions:

We spent the entire first semester with the same groups of eight or nine students. We were told this was unusual and that typically the groups are shuffled after the first PBL exam. Regardless of whether this pattern holds, once you begin your second semester you can expect to work with a new group of students and a new facilitator after each exam.

The dress code just describes "shoes". Are any kind acceptable? I was thinking of getting some long-lasting goodyear welt boots, is that okay? do they care if the boots area shade of dark red?

You may be able to get away with a nice pair of dress boots that appear to be dress shoes from the ankle down. But most men are wearing dress shoes, nice loafers, etc.

Are there any apartments/homes we should definitely avoid? In some of the med school Facebook groups I've seen, students have been good about warning incoming students of bad places.

I have no advice on specific properties to avoid. Some of the best housing options are private rentals that get leased entirely on word of mouth. So start working the facebook groups to get landlord contact info if you're not feeling something like Laurel Springs (the complex across the street from LECOM), or one of the other Pastore properties. Since you're PBL, you may be tempted to find something close to the Bayfront Campus. Just be aware that you will be at the main campus almost every day during the first semester and at least 2-3 days/week after that. Required sessions at Bayfront are limited to three PBL group meetings/week, and there is almost no other reason to go to Bayfront unless you want to study there.

First year students are mostly oblivious to the match, and second year students are too busy sweating COMLEX 1/Step 1 to worry about it. If anyone is predicting post-merger doom and gloom, they're either keeping it to themselves, or the rest of us are too busy to hear it.

LECOM Erie began recording lectures this year and they are accessible to students in all pathways. Powerpoint slides are typically not distributed to DSP and PBL for LDP-only courses.
Didn't realize they recorded their lectures. Thats great

I was just accepted! Interviewed on 2/3, portal update on 4/4. I'm accepted pending seat at ATSU-SOMA and accepted to the Georgetown SMP too, but I haven't made up my mind yet. Hooray for decisions!

I interviewed on 3/24 and got waitlisted today at Erie. Anyone know how many people are on the waitlist? How many people usually get accepted off the waitlist? The difference between waitlisted and alternate?

I asked them if there were two lists because my letter said alternate . They told me no it's all one list for waitlist and alternate.

Does anyone know when the financial aid package is usually posted?

I spoke to Financial Aid over the phone. The Erie campus Financial Aid Office said it should post around mid-April. I am waiting for this as well haha

DO you mind sharing your stats? I am still waiting for an invite :(

Just an update-- I was accepted back at the beginning of March for Erie LDP, interviewed Dec 9th, and I just finished submitting all the paperwork for the incoming class to include the physical and immunizations. My wife and I are flying there at the end of the month to start house hunting-- looking forward to meeting everyone in the incoming class!
