KCU-COM class of 2020

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If I am basing my apartment cost decision based on the room/board part of the KCU Budget plan, about what should I aim for per month in rent?

Like any room/board situation, it depends on how much you want to spend on food. ~$1456 allowed/month. Maybe spend the next 2 weeks or month checking to see how much you spend on food and subtract that from $1456, that will give you some idea of what you have to work with.

I had a few questions for current students about housing. I am thinking about living in CT but I am OOS and will be coming from pretty far away. Are the apartments furnished? If not, do students bring furniture or do they commonly rent it? If any current students moved with furniture, do you have any suggestions on how to get larger items down to KCU?

Alot of times, students leaving for clerkship sell their furniture for very very cheap. My wife and I left with seriously the clothes on our back and just furnished our place by buying used from students. Craigslist is also hopping here in KC. We simply rented out a truck from Home Depot and used it for the day to move stuff into our place.

One of my favorite things about CT is that they have on site storage so what I did was buy all of my furniture ahead of time from current students and had them put it into one storage unit under my name (office had the key) and the day I moved in I was able to get it all out and into my apartment. By far the best thing after a very long drive here with only my car haha. I think I spent about $200 furnishing my apartment including a bed, couch, desk, coffee table, bar stools, and tv stand definitely worth it. People will begin posting furniture on your Facebook page as they start packing up in the summer.

Hey everyone! Glad to say I'll be joining the crew from now on :)

There are some awesome apartment options just north of the city. My gf and I are looking into the river market area, lots of amenities there including a really cheap produce market :)
Can't wait to see you all at orientation!

If you are considering CityView let me know! If you put my name down on the references list we both make some extra cash!

Me and my SO are seriously considering CityView.

Do you know when most apartments become available? I.e- would it be okay to wait until accepted student's day to sign a lease?

I would call them now to see when you soud start applying. I called in Dec I think and they said they would put my name down for a pre waitlist. I applied for the apartment in Jan or Feb I believe and knew where I would be by May ish!

Hey Guys, so glad to join the group!!!
Just wondering, will it be ok to walk back from campus to CT late in the night? since I heard the neighborhood is not the greatest area in the city.

KCU has security surrounding the school and CT area 24/7! And if you're ever concerned, they will provide an escort and watch over as you walk. I haven't heard of any issues so far this year

Ok. So I just found out I have a budget that I can cover up to $500/yr on medical equipment for my job. I want to use this years budget on a stethoscope and medical equipment that I will need during school. What should I get? Everyone says to get a card III steth. Is this accurate? Also, what else can I spend the budget on that would be needed? It renews in January, so I may as well spend it all.

The Card III isn't "needed" but I love mine.

What about kits? If those are more expensive, it may make sense for me to get that before the end of the year. Is it just a otoscope? Or do we need more?

There's a lot of posts on here about housing and now suddenly I'm worried about it ughh... So when is it "too late" to be looking for housing? The reason I'm asking is not necessarily because I'm super lazy, but I do feel like investing all of my time into it NOW might not be as fruitful since I'm still deciding between two schools. But if I do end up going to KCUMB, when would it be considered kind of late to be looking for housing (just so I make sure to do all my research before that "too late" time comes)...

Also when should we aim to move in for? I don't have any pressing things to do in KC with the exception of school and setting up my place before that, but I would assume moving in the day school starts is obviously a bad idea... so... July? Or do people move in even earlier?

I would definitely start thinking about price ranges and where you want to live. The longer you wait, the less options you'll have haha

As for time of moving, I moved from Florida to here the weekend before orientation and that worked out well for me. I was able to put my apt together during orientation week with no stress. I think it would have been cool to have some time to explore KC before orientation start, but I was working up until I moved so I didn't have that option

I started looking before I got accepted. I didn't have a place nailed down until a few weeks before I actually moved out here. A lot of places (especially the ones that that are the higher bang for your buck) you're not even going to know if they're available more than a couple months out.

Hey all, I'm trying to figure out housing and @AlteredScale pointed out that KC is rolling out their new streetcar system for downtown in early 2016 (http://kcstreetcar.org/route-map/). I don't know about you all but this makes River Market especially appealing to me. Free transportation downtown is pretty sweet and River Market in general is only 6 or 7 minutes away from campus according to google maps. Hope some of you find this info helpful!

If you or anyone finds some decently affordable housing around River Market please let me know! I tried looking but the places I found require a steady income and/or KC/MO residency. Very interested in that area as well.

Market Station? There's a good population of students there and I think it's very comfortable. It's about 1200 for 1br but 1400-1600 for 2br so if you're living with a roomate then it becomes very affordable.

That's good to hear. The price for a 2br is very affordable compared to where I'm from (big city). How do you advise finding a place in market station? I want to be within Kansas city but at the same time, away from the dorm-style of living

Would you mind listing the places that require the income and/or residency restrictions? :happy:Looks like The Landings at River Market are on the cheaper side but haven't checked for any restrictions...

How long does it take for acceptance fee to process if it is made online through their website? An a few hours? Days?

Looking back, for me it took about two days. Submitted on a Thursday and received an email on Monday. Hope this helps

Hey guys. I see a few of you are discussing housing and I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in! I live at The Landing at Briarcliff along with quite a few other students. It's about a 10 minute drive from school. They're brand spankin' new and we're the first people to live in our apartment. We wanted a place still close enough to school and downtown, but didn't want the hastle of limited parking and expensive living. This place fit the bill. It also has a large clubhouse, gym, sauna, and movie theatre room. They're not "cheap" per say, but compared to what we were looking at downtown, by the river market, etc. there is more bang for your buck here. There are also many floor plans to choose from. Check it out online at thelandingkc.com and if you have any questions feel free to PM me. And if you end up choosing to live here or wanting to come check it out I'd be happy to show you around. And then if you sign using my referral I'm pretty sure we both get some money off.

either way the wellness center wouldn't be done being build anytime in the next 2 years. If they haven't even broken ground on a building like that by now then don't count on it being available for any incoming students.

True, still the gym in the Academic Center looks very nice. I am just happy that KCU is investing in providing us with amazing facilities!

I'm looking for a one bedroom or studio to live in on my own. I'm currently most interested in Quality Hill Apartments and CityView. Can anyone help me understand the pros and cons to each of those places/neighborhoods?

Also, would living away from campus and not at CT make it difficult to socialize/make new friends?

Thanks!

Quality Hill is a bit more expensive than City View but it's prob a biiit more nice. CityView is def nice, 980 for 1BD and 700-800 for a studio. I'll add more on CityView since I live there.

CityView is in North Kansas City. It's very quiet here. There's a senior living compex next to us so there's realy nothing wild and crazy. There's a save-a-lot nearby so essentially I walk to get groceries. Not much selection but it does the job. If I want smoething fresher I go to the city marker which is a 5 minute drive away. Down the road we have some little shopping marts. It's close enough to school and downtown that If my wife and I wanna go out we don't need to plan it because we are so close. What I like is that we aren't IN downtown so I don't get too distrated with going out.

Management is super nice. There's a gym, little place to hang out and study with a free coffee machine. Pool in the summer. Dog park nearby if you have one.

If I didn't have a roommate to split all the costs I probably would have picked CityView. The price is good and it's really quiet. The drive is probably 5 mins longer to campus compared to where I currently live.

I live downtown and I'm not really someone who parties or goes bar hopping so I didn't really get anything out of it. All the really cool amenities that I was drawn to in my current apartment complex I don't really use.

When picking an apartment complex remember that you will be studying for a majority of the day.

Does anyone know if all of the rotation sites are preceptor-based, or are there any ward-based sites? Perusing the KCUMB site, I could only find preceptor based.

No. Not all sites are preceptor based. Most are mixed. Some have more preceptor based rotations than others (KC is more preceptor based then the sites in Wichita, MI, etc etc).

I appreciate the response. One more, is it reasonable to consider living around River Market? During the several days I spent around KC that was one location I particularly liked, though I only spent a weekday afternoon there. I know little to nothing about KC, so any advice is appreciated.

River Market is really nice IMO. You're walking distance from a great local market. If you are looking at Market Station it's gnna be expensive and you may wanna roommate.

Market Station is starting to get expensive. All the students I knew in 1 BD apartments have moved into a 2 BD to divide the rent. Less students are living here compared to last year.

I think a 1 BD is ~$1,100 and 2 BD/ 2 BA is ~$1,400+ this year. Rent is rising in the area because more people want to live here.

I'm looking to get a studio or one bedroom apartment next year but $1,100 is wayyyy out of budget. Does anybody know of some more affordable Studio apartments? I really like the idea of living downtown and being able to walk to fun places, restaurants, etc but I understand that this comes with a cost. I'd say my budget caps around $800 ideally. Does anyone know anything about NoRi apartments? They look nice
