Duke, class of 2010!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I got to experience being a Patient for only the 2nd time in my life last night. . . and let me tell you, car accidents SUCK. Vicodin is pretty neat, though. . .

oh neat gem, if you want to try again, i'm more than willing to push you off some rooftop... I'm stil looking for a place (am i the last one?) so just tell me the room size (and closet size) and how un/furnished it is and i'll think about it.

hope you feel better, gemma. as long as you still have your motor skills, we're still in business.

Yep, me dexterity is still perfectly fine but I have some staples in my head for the next week or so. Fun little thing to have the night before a final, let me tell you. :)

since it's 8:28PM in taiwan and there's no one else to say this to, who's awake, i thought i'd post this lil experience.

i'm at the howard hotel at taipei right now, apparently a very posh hotel for international businessmen. 5 minutes ago , i walked into the elevator carrying a steaming bowl of instant ramen that i had procurred from the nearby 7/11 (soooo hungry). 4.9 minutes ago, this cute businessman walks in (greek?) and smiles at me. 4.6 minutes ago, he's about to leave and looks at me, says "nice lunch" in his hot accent (generic european). 4.4 minutes ago, i'm slamming my head on the elevator door for looking like an utter pig in front of hot elevator guy... 4 minutes ago, i decided that i had to tell someone. 2 minutes ago, i turned on the computer, 1 minute ago, i'm chowing down on my delicious, delicious ramen to forget about my embarassment. and now, i'm typing my heart out to my future classmates, hoping that this won't be used against me on a later date.

good morning, dukies. :)

internet must be fast over there, all that in less than 5 min, impressive. faster than my connection here at home; wait a sec, i have no connection at home; i'm leeching wireless off of someone... *can't find that embarrassed smiley*

Is anyone else highly amused by Richard Wallace's last e-mail? What kind of school authority figure says "DUH"?!

:D I love this place.
I love that guy too :)

eh? I don't think I got that email...

Gemma, sounds like that was quite a crash you were in. I hope that the headache and whatever other pains you have resolve themselves quickly. Your car still going to be able to make it x-country?

FYI for anybody who needs the Duke health insurance: Coverage starts August 17 (which is, of course, after we need to get there), so if you want to be covered those weeks or earlier, you can get covered by the same insurance. They'll pro-rate it for the time you need it. Much more affordable than COBRA!

:) Thanks, Shaka. My car is still a big fat question mark. I was way too out of it to even have any idea what the extent of the damage was so I guess I'll find out tomorrow when I go down there to pull my graduation tassel out of the wreckage so I can wear it on Saturday. My life is scripted.

Good to know about the health insurance - I thought we were totally covered after class started but I guess I was mistaken. Thanks for the info!

Is anyone else living or going to live in the Spring Hill area?

OK i need to ask you guys a QUESTION>... first congrats on ur acceptances to duke... my question is this: is any one of you guys on another waitlist at a different school that if taken off of u would go to that school???? im just trying to get some sense of the movement post jun15...

thanks.....

haha, i think it's a bit awkward for people on this thread to say they would rather go to another school if given the chance, cuz well, it is the duke thread...

good luck though. :luck:

btw: about the health insurance... what if something were to happen to us while we were visiting family on break or something, are we still covered? is there a handout or website that explains the health insurance in more detail?

don't worry, you'd still be covered. An e-mail was sent out today explaining the basics of the health insurance...I didn't read the whole thing, but there probably was some link or something where you could get more info. But anyway, I don't remember if I was ever on the Duke health insurance during undergrad (I think I might have been for one year), and you're covered all the time and anywhere, at least for ER visits. You might have to switch your primary and specialist doctors to ones in their network, though.

and mercer, I think everyone on here is definitely going to Duke, but I can't speak for anyone else. Duke's waitlist was the only one I accepted being on, so I'm not waiting on another one.

Hope you're feeling better, gemma!

yep MrBurns10 I think ur right..... but just based on your experience.... do u think that there are ppl in DUKE as of now that may go elsewhere if taken off another waitlist at this point....... or is it more like everyone in is going at this point...... not necessirally from the ppl on this thread or even SDN but in general ???? thx...

also mrburns10... do u think that if i can do research with a PhD in the Biochemistry Dept of the Medical school and get some major work done in this upcoming year.... and assuming i get into duke next year (im on the waitlist for this year) do u think they will count my 3rd yr off since I did post-bac research in their school in their dept/???? thx for all the insight...

hello mercer85, I was lucky enough to either get rejected outright post secondary or accepted early upon interview but Duke was and still is my first choice. And as for your latter question, I dont think anyone here can give you a definite answer so I think that you can shoot Dean Wallace an email and it would have to be reviewed once you're accepted (either this year or next).
To my fellow classmates, how much are your rent including utilities and how far is it from Duke? Mind if I crash by and eat your foods sometimes?

Apparently this is the second email I haven't received... Would somebody mind posting the dates of these emails so I can figure out how many I have missed? The last one I received was a forward from a student looking for roommates.
Thanks!

And the website for the Duke insurance is hillchesson.com/duke.htm . If you are in the country and have questions, they are easy to talk with on the phone (919-489-7426). If you are in Vietnam, I am sure that they would respond promptly to emailed questions! :)

Oooh and happy graduation to those of you walking today! (Gemma?)

I honestly don't know the answers to your questions, but I do have two friends who got in last year in June. Things differ from year to year and I've heard of them taking people off through orientation, but I have no idea what it looks like this year. You could try e-mailing Mr. Wallace or Dean Armstrong and asking them. And about your masters thing, I seriously doubt they would let you skip the 3rd year with only a one-year masters. I know you can do this if you have a PhD, but I know several people who've matriculated with a masters and still had to do the third year. My main suggestion is to ask them about what the waitlist looks like and to keep showing your interest in the school. Best of luck.

hey forev, I'm living about 10 mins from Duke (it took about 8-9 mins to get to the parking garage, but we MS1s have to park kinda far away). Utilities usually runs between $50-100 for electricity and $10-20 for water (for a three bedroom place; probably less for 2BR).

Shaka- the date of that e-mail was 6/5 and the insurance e-mail was 6/16. Then there was one about someone looking for a roommate, but I don't know when because I deleted it. I think that's been it so far, at least since the general admissions e-mail.

what sux for me is that im not in another school so im kinda waiting to see if im either in DUKE or not in any medschool ...... so im kinda hesitant to take a job or research position b/c i dont want to commit for a yr just in case duke hopefully calls me... b/c duke keeps saying we can wait all the way into july... i just wish they would tell me im at the top 2 spots or in the bottom 2 or middle 2...... that way i could figure out ok im prolly in or prolly out?? i dont think the admissions office will let us know this however.... i really dont understand why they wouldnt??

it's projected to be 430 (including internet) according to the third year i've been talking to. i think it's about 10 minutes away from school and of course you are welcome, provided that i have easy access to your fridge too :p .

has anyone cracked open the book yet? i just got home so i probably won't get to it until... july 30th, you know with the jet lag and all ;) .

I got it on friday and it was a good weekend read. I want to be a lawyer and have a service dog now *soooo funny*

I'm living in a 2 bedroom, 2 bath apt in West Village with a roommate I found on craigslist (05 UNC grad, works for a web tech company). Go to www.westvillageapts.com for pics and floorplans. It's a sweet place, and should be an easy bike (or 30 min walk in nice weather) to West Campus. I think our apt is supposed to be rented for $1000/month, but due to a strange loophole in our lease history (that sounds sketchy, but it isn't, scout's honor), we're only paying $880, or $440 per person, plus utilities. I'm budgeting about $520/month for everything. I know that's a little more than was in our projected budget, but I think I'll break even since I can bike/walk instead of drive (less gas and maybe even no parking pass?). And, even if it ends up costing a little more, it's worth it to me b/c it was exactly the place/roommate situation I wanted.

For people still looking and trying to get a sense of the rental market, I went down to find a place in early June and saw apts, townhouses, and single family homes all with at least one roommate with rents ranging from $300 to $625. There seemed to be a lot of options.

?! According to my budget they've set out $580/mo for rent, utilities, then $410/mo for food and $455/mo for miscellaneous. I'm pretty sure plenty of people are upping their rent over the budgetted allowance with their "misc" funding. So IHaveLab you should be absolutely fine.

Me, I'm lookin' for a townhouse. Anyone found anything decent under $100k? I don't need big, fancy, or new. Just functional and nearby.

'Canes? Hmmm I dunno about them; I am busy watching the World Cup matches. Anyone else?

On the med school budget sheet that I have from Duke, they allot $755/month for rent + utilities.

I am leaving for Durham in less than a month!

Are you joking?! Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals?! Only the 2nd finals that the 'canes have GONE to and it's vs. the legendary Edmonton Oilers who battled back from being seeded 8th?!!! And the FIRST Stanley Cup that this (relatively) new franchise has ever won?!!!!!! AND it was a damn fine game on top of all of that?!! (Jeez, that last goal was just icing on the cake. Totally unnecessary but rather fun, I must say. . . ) ANNNND it just gave me extra ammunition to gloat over my Edmontonian ex-pat boyfriend? Whee! I feel like next year I'll have to just buy meself a nice red and white jersey to counter his grotty old Oilers jersey. . . :p

But hey, diff'rent strokes. If I had ESPN I'd probably be watching far more soccer than I have been. I gotta say, the man-candy is much better on the field than the ice. :D Not really into that whole "missing teeth" thing.

In the meantime. . . how about them A's? Depressing loss tonight, am I wrong?

i'm not into watching sport other than those I can learn something from it, like to emulate federer's back-hand or roddick's serve or tiger's swing.
anywayz, what's AoA day? (no, seriously, what is it and what does it stand for?)

I've been watching so much sports on TV I think I'm going to go into withdrawal after this World Cup is over. Luckily football season is almost here...

i'd rather play than watch, but i'm not particularly good at anything to begin with :p . snowboarding anyone?

skiing for me since never tried snowboard. but answer my question or else I wont be able to sleep!!!

oh, AoA is Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society, only a the top percent of students get nominated into it depending on a combination of basic science and clinical grades, i think. i dunno what AOA day is tho, maybe it's when they announce the AOA students?

at the end of orientation, august 4th. apparently, they feed us well is what i've heard. :)

ok, i just finished my sister's keeper, and i seriously need to cry. :(

dont cry, none of it is real; it's just like a korean drama, none of it is real...

oh, so parent's weekend in March is something different? oops. Our parents/friends are invited to the white coat ceremony, right?

yea they are invited, apparently the office is going to be sending out more information, but i'm wondering when, because i need to book plane tickets asap.

btw: then it's a good thing i don't watch korean soaps because i'd probably have watery eyes all the time.

It's a beautiful book, so far. Im a bit more than halfway through it.

how can you not watch any korean drama?!!!!! it's my escape from reality (just realized that many asian girls i know are dating white guys, they're stealing my potential wives!) anywayyy, white coat huh? will it be long or short?

it's so cheesy (but knowing me, i'll probably get addicted anyway). have you seen the movie made by ucsd film guys, yellow fever?

if you're that desperate, i could introduce you so some of my friends, they're all very cute asian girls but they might be a lil young for you.

oh yea, and hanging out with me could be the cure. apparently, i have the magical ability of being the only one of my group of friends who never dates anyone. if this carries over to med school, it could mean good things for you. :)

i am not desperate, i just haven't had my summer fling yet! hang out with you rex? of course i'll hang out with you, i'll even room with you just for the ladies alone.

heheh I dunno Korean dramas, but if you want some great soap opera action, you have to watch Mexican telenovelas. :D

By the way, shall we have an SDN meet-up in Dur-ham?

nah, somehow the novelas i've seen/heard of all have the same story. rich boy meets poor girl and falls in love, we find out she's actually his sister, but got separated by birth because the mom gets taken away by the mother-in-law, but it turns out they're actually not related, blah blah blah.... it's sappy, but there's so much incest it really kills the mood. ;)

and as for meeting up, i'm all for it, but i'm afraid that when we do we won't know what to say to each other in person. there's just something comfortable about a computer screen.

woo hoo,we're almost at 500!

OMGGGG, I just typed out a longggggggggggg post and SDN just happened to run into a database problem, deleting everything. Lucky I have time to write them all out again (two more day of working).
Rex, you just described this Korean drama plot that I like, Winter Sonata. Girl (A) met guy (A) when they were in high school and they had this wonderful romance. Somehow, they lost contact after high school. Girl (A) meets guy (A) again when they’re grown up but guy (A) doesn’t remember girl (A) because he lost his memory in a car accident and is currently dating girl (B) (who is girl (A) best friend). Somehow, he regains his memory, ditch girl (B) and love girl (A) again, so they’re together atlast. But guy (A) mom comes and say girl (A) and guy (A) are half sibling. Girl (A) cries and runs away. But it turns out that they’re not sibling afterall. So what will happen to them go and see the last episode, it’s only 20 episodes long, so that’s 20 hours.

Since I’m on a roll, this is another Korean drama that I love: Summer Scent. I’ll set up the setting and characters first: Girl (A) –not poor, but not rich either, Girl (B)-rich and spoil, girl (C)-pretty but die in the first scene, guy (A)-handsome but not so rich, guy (B)-rich and powerful and is girl (B)’s older brother and is currently girl (A)’s boyfriend. So here’s the story.
It was guy (A) and girl (C) wedding day and guy (A) was waiting at the alter when he receives a phone call saying that girl (C) was in a car accident. He rushes to the site and carries her bloody body in her wedding gown to the hospital. Girl (C) dies, guy (A) is crushed. At that same time, girl (A) needs a heart transplant because of her illness so she gets girl (C)’s heart, and not many people know about this. So they went on with their lives and girl (B) returns from her trip bringing her new bf, guy (A). When guy (A) and girl (A) meets, her heart started pounding and rushing as if it was love at first sight. Guy (B), being a type A possessive jealous boyfriend doesn’t want this so he starts to create conflict, mistrust, and drama. Girl (B) also doesn’t want to loose the guy so she starts her own stuff too. Girl (A) is easily swayed and influenced so they can’t make any decision of her own. Guy (A) is a nice guy so he just want her to be happy and put up with a lot of crap. But somehow, they pull through and be with each other. But then they found out that girl (A) heart is from girl (C) (his fiancé remember?). So everyone starts to say that girl (A) doesn’t really love guy (A) and guy (A) doesn’t love girl (A); she loves him because the heart told her to do so and he loves her because she resembles girl (C). So they parted. Still following me right? 30 minutes from the ending, girl (A) has another heart failure and needed another heart transplant (they make it seems sooo easy in movie: so you need a heart? Well come on in and we’ll give you a new one in just an hour with no risk whatsoever). After the transplant, they ran into each other again and they ______________ go watch the last 30 min!!!! it’s only 20 episodes.
The OSTs are also great….

hahahahaha, well, leave it to soaps to make possible, the medically impossible. all this gushing about romantic storylines make me feel that we'll get along just fine, kevin. maybe we should room together next year, eh?

Bumping! Camping trip is just a month away! Let's move to Durham, people!

Jeez, easier said than done :(
