No. I'm seriously disenchanted with Wayne at this point and expect nothing from them except BS. They will get what they give in the long run, when the current students are the docs they will be banking on for donations in 20-30 years. This is one person who plans on giving nothing except a big "f- you".

In their defense, I get emails all the time (several a week, sometimes) asking me (and every other student, I imagine) to get involved with the legislature in order that our voices are heard w/r/t issues that effect the school. One time, there was some kind of petition going around, and I believe it was relative to potential funding pull backs from the state. Sadly, I often don't read them, but they are there.

Of course most of those e-mails are primarily aimed at the student population over on main campus.

I suggest just embracing the opinion that has been expressed on this forum in the past. And that is that in the eyes of the powers-that-be on main campus; medical school (and students) = cash cow and source of state and national recognition (because face it, without us WSU would essentially be an unknown outside of Metro Detroit).

Any suggestions for good places to take the MSI kids for this whole big sib/little sib thing? I remember going to Greektown last year, which wasn't too bad.

I just don't want to end up at Union Street with 50 other people. :)

what?! no way! there were 2 different parking structures! man. that would really suck.

I'm so horrible...I currently have this chant going through my head:

I don't want to go to class to-day! I don't want to go to class to-day!

How sad is that, it is only the 7th day of actually classes and I already want to start slacking. And of course it is a day of REQUIRED classes, so I have to go whether I want to or not.

I am also dog tired this morning. The baby spent all night doing somersaults, alternatively requiring me to jump up to use the bathroom (to pee about a thimble-full) and reigniting the heart-burn (which the Zantac didn't even touch). Trying to stay positive: 5 more weeks until delivery. 5 more weeks until delivery.5moreweeks.5moreweeks.

Damn! not working either.

Regarding the free Greektown Parking, are you referring to the Casino lot? That must still be there. Of course, its only free if you find the validation booth in the middle of the casino and don't loose your ticket. Otherwise, its $20.
Greektown is a good idea!

Drive to Xochi in Mexicantown. It's very cheap and very good food. Check local.google.com for directions, but when you drive there, take 75 to Porter St.

Don't feel bad.. I had the same chant in my head. In fact, I quit going to class yesterday. My alarm went off at 9am and I just turned it off and went back to sleep. At least you have a good excuse for not wanting to go!

I wonder how the 3rd years are doing??

Dog tired. I had a 16 hour day yesterday with the Gyn-onc surgeon. It sucked big time because all I really did was retract, suction, and cut sutures. My back was killing me by the end of it and I was starving too. He had two ORs going so while we were closing one patient, another was being prepped. I maybe got two potty breaks and a whole 10 min to scarf down a bag of chips for dinner. I'm really glad I stuffed all those granola bars in my pockets that morning!

I was really liking OB/gyn at first 'cuz I started out in L&D. Now I'm on the gyn service and I hate it. It sucks royally. I will never be an ob/gyn or a surgeon. This blows!!! Only two more weeks..... hopefully the shelf isn't bad.

wow, does that surgeon work 16 hrs on a regular basis?! Sounds rough. How do you prepare for the shelf eams? Good luck... get some rest!

Yes he does. He was there another 4 hours after I was told to go home. He does all his hard cases on Mondays for some reason. We had endometrial cancer, two ovarian tumors, renal carcinoma mets to the ovary, etc. He is THE person to see for any kind of gyn cancer at Providence.

I am using the Case Files for OB/gyn and the Blueprints book as well. So far they've been pretty good at filling in the gaps of what I'm not seeing on my rotation.

My take on the immuno test: Some super easy, some reasoning, the rest "what the @$%^ was that"

My overall impression: a hopeful whimper.

I can't believe Uzo's gone. He was such a nice guy. :(

now that the 3rd years are all busy nobody posts here anymore :(

yeah i thought the exam was a good mix... what was up with those 3-4 questions that werent in the notes or lecture (antitoxin, myasthenia gravis, etc). i wish there would have been more memorize questions.. .those are always the easiest.

any advice for micro? i already have the MMRE and flashcards. what about the CD ith questions or are there questions on the MD computers?

Do all the questions off the CD. SOme of them will be word for word on the exam. The Mims was helpful for some chapters but overall I used it mostly for the CD and online access to the Q's. Other than that it just sat on the shelf. Definitely go to lecture because most of the profs tell you what you need to know. There was one a-hole though. Whoever was teaching us about the antimicrobials screwed us big time by telling us we didn't need to know certain things and then putting it on the exam anyway. Forget what his name was though...

dr. lerner! thanks for the heads up. Man, so does this mean that i should buy that book for the CD. A friend gave me some of the questions off that CD that he had typed up... but not all. Anybody have all the questions off the CD typed (or willing to sell/give me/let me copy CD ;) )?

Go to old posts, I bet you will get a couple of questions that way

and yeah, I feel so bad for Uzo, the second guy in our class who died. Hopefully he is a better place right now. but I agree with that email sent to our class, I think the senate should donate money to his family

hey, does anyone know if the oral surgery exam is following the written exam tomorrow? Or what time it is? Thanks!

Anyone know how long it takes to get results from a shelf exam, and how we get our results? Thanks in advance

Seeing how this is Wayne...
take how long it should take and add a couple of weeks. I am now approaching 5 weeks out from my first shelf and still haven't seen any numbers.
I did happen to bump into the secretary for my first clerkship and found out that the shelf scores have been back for a while, the delay is in getting the clinical evaluations. And they won't release scores until they have both.

I heard that the scores (along with our evals) are released every 2 months. Therefore, I will not be expecting my Ob/gyn grade until the end of October. Why can't they just release our shelf grades without the evals?

Ugh...time to fall back on the tactic used after taking step 1. Assume you passed until you hear otherwise. I'm getting (wait, who am I kidding? already) very sick of Wayne and its anal eval policies.

stop dissing wayne, wayne state rules

I think the funniest email I got this year was last week, when some kid was saying that wayne won't condone the trust me I am a wayne state doctor T-shirts. I don't know, I am just very easily amused sometimes

Those shirts were cool looking too. I wanted one, just wasn't sure what size to get...since I'm freakin' huge right now! I can't wait to go into labor. I've been having hour long stretches of contractions, but then they quit for 3-4 hours. I just want them to continue!!!! Everybody send labor vibes...

good luck with that! maybe if you go into labor tomorrow, you can be back and ready for the third micro exam... watch streaming lectures in the hospital, it will be all good! ;)

so, are you planning to take any time off? how are you planning on working it?

Yeah...no! Whenever I deliver, that next set of tests will be postponed 'til future make-up dates. I think I'm going to take about 3-4 weeks off...but I don't want to postpone two test cycles if I can help it. I'll end up streaming everything from home, but hopefully come in for labs/required junk. After I'm officially back then I'll only come in for required stuff so that I can spend more time at home. We aren't doing any type of daycare because we have lots of family support in the area. Since my hubby works nights, my mother-in-law is going to take the baby a couple of nights a week just so I can have some quiet study time.

I'm still going to class now just so that I can get in some walking everyday to try and move this kid down! What really sucks is that I can't really fit behind those little desks anymore, well at least not to bend over and take notes. So I just sit there reclining like a beached whale.

haha.. yeah i don't think those desks were designed for pregnant women in mind! They have desks for left handers.. perhaps you should talk to the administration.. have them get a special lazyboy for you!

So what are all my fellow MS3s doing to enjoy their day away from the hospitals?

I have spent most of it sleeping, with a little bit of time spent trying to get caught up on some reading. How about the rest of you?

Anybody know what the step1 avg was for you third years? How many people failed?

Should I expect to have less time next year?

National average was a 217 with a standard dev of approx 21-22. As for failure rate, ???--just remember that you have about a 92% chance of passing (historically speaking) if you put in the work.

As for time, depends on your rotation and on what happens each day. Try not to think too much on Y3 and just focus on getting through Y2. Regardless of rotation, I like Y3 better. Hope that answers it for you.

Thanks Jenna.

Do some of you cross the border to just gas up your car? Is it worthy? How much exactly do you save whenever you do that? Remember in med school every dime count...

To fill up a 15 gallon tank at $0.80/L canadian and $2.17/G american (cheapest reported prices online), it will cost you in US dollars

In the US: $32.55
In Canada: $41.55 + $5-7 in tolls + gas wasted waiting at customs.

So no, absolutely not. Not unless the gas was upwards of ~$3.30 would you even be making a monetary savings.

Thanks...I though the gas over there would be cheaper since they and Norway are the western world Saoudi arabia w bollions of barrils underground.

I'll warn you now: the average for the lab exam is 1.5 wrong, consistently from year to year.

Well, thanks for ruining my day.

I was going to go and watch the tigers lose this week, but i guess I'll have to study now.

Yeah, I picked the wrong unit to be lazy. Any third years have any advice on what to study for lab exam?

good lord, lerner's notes suck
