Just curious to know if anyone knows whether there are any good mountain biking trails near UNE?

Hello everyone, hope you are all well! I have just moved to Biddeford and am looking for people to meet up with before school starts. I am excited to begin school but because I was admitted to UNECOM in late May I have a ton of things to do in a small amount of time (financial aid, medical stuff and so on). If people are around and want to hang let me know.
Later, Chris.

Ooh.. rafting trip on aug 2nd~ that sounds like fun

Hi Chris,
Belated Congratulations and Welcome to Biddeford! I'm in Biddeford if you need any help with things. I am a rising 2nd year (sounds weird in more ways than one) so I can help you out with school stuff or getting to know the area.
PM me or IM me on AIM.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Everyone,
My wife and I have been living in this wonderful, quiet, safe building for the past year (We are staying in the same place thats how much we like it).
If anyone is still looking for an apartment here is a listing for one of the soon-to-be vacant apartments in my building:

http://maine.craigslist.org/apa/347652505.html

The landlords are wicked nice and very flexible. If you have any specific questions regarding the building, area, etc, feel free to PM or IM me.
Off street parking with snow removal in the winter, tres Niiiiice.
Also, the apartments here are wired for ethernet, and according to the listing Wi-Fi is included. Heat and Hot Water are included as well in the rent. Good luck moving up here and getting everything squared away!
Cheers,
Steve F.

We have an open room available in a brand new condo in Old Orchard Beach if anyone is still looking. It is on the ocean with a pool, sauna and fitness center. Rent is 600 plus utilities, but it's an awesome unit! It's available at the end of august until june.

For more info check out grandvictorianwaterfront.com and send me a message with questions etc...

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer!

Who is going on the rafting trip? Are you bringing your significant other? My gfriend and I were thinking about going to get a jump start on meeting people. I used to kayak the kennebec river all the time in college (went to Colby) and it is a great river at a nice time of year to go...

so who's going?

hey guys,

i think i posted once. so hello again. i had a quick question. when are we going to hear from our lenders? mine is T.H.E. i know the financial aid office told me to expect some news in june but i've only heard from UNE regarding my financial aid award. any insight?

greedily,

mel

Call 'em. I know THE processed my stafford loan VERY quickly. I went with MELA for my supplemental, and they generally are very fast with approvals... now waiting for the certification from UNE to MELA for amounts and stating I really am going next year too is taking a while. :(

I'd call THE if you have any questions (as long as it's been a couple of weeks since you filed paperwork).

Can someone remind me where to send the copies of our official transcripts?

Thanks!

For all those interested....it's finally here..

u know, it seems like matches are getting better and better (i hope thats the case anyhow). seriously though, Beth Israel (Harvard hospital) anesthesiology, Penn State Orthopedic surgery, Thomas Jefferson...

I'd be cautious in reading too much into the match. Each specialty has programs that are strong not just the prestigous names (e.g. John Hopkins, Harvard, etc). Additionally, many people's rank order lists are based on factors that include where they want to live, cost of living, etc..

UNECOM has consistently done fine with the match, and will continue to do so as long as the students stay motivated and continue to shine in their away rotations.

ok- so just got this letter in the mail from UNECOM breaking down how much I owe etc. Apparently they are saying I owe money out of pocket? i thought loans covered it all? I am thoroughly confused.

anyone else get a letter like this?

Did it say something like supplemental loan eligibility?

At the bottom of the page (at least on my letter), it says that I owe -$146. I am taking this to mean that the loans covered the tuition, etc., and that the school owes me that much money. Perhaps it's the same situation. Hope this helps.

We all just got bills from UNE in the mail - yes, even us MSII's. Mine has Current Charges (total $22715 listed as " * CURRENT BILLED BALANCE * ").

Under the Charges column, you should find "Memo items". This should list your Stafford Loans (but subsidized and unsubsidized) and your "alternative" loan. I chose Maine MedLoan, and it is listed as such. If you have the GradPlus, it should also be listed there. It is important to note that only loans the school has been informed you are approved for will be noted on your bill. So if you're slackin' and haven't applied for your supplemental loans yet, your bill may show that you owe money. This should then serve as a kick in the butt to get your loans taken care of. :p

Now, if at the bottom of the page it says "Total Due" with a "-" sign in front of the number, you're due a refund. Please remember that as a first year grad student, your loan proceeds may not be disbursed to you until after the first week of school - so the week after orientation. It depends on your disbursement dates for your loans. You can generally check these online at your lending institution's website.

Relax. It'll all be ok. Just keep checkin' off those items on the checklist. :) Clear as mud, right?

Phew. Thanks, Shyrem. Small melt down here in MA after I read my bill. I called UNECOM to clear it all up. Also- i have started useing my new e-mail and U-online..pretty cool!

Does anyone know how many boxes of Nitrile gloves I should steal from my lab to bring to school for anatomy?

will be need 500 pair fo gloves or more?

Thx!

so shyrem since you seem to be the yoda... what's your take on the sallie mae tuitionpay monthly plan? my aversion to this offer is BankAmerica is backing it and well, they're the man. your thoughts.

-mel

Y'all understand that this answer is my opinion, right??? Ok, then. Problem with that plan is there's another fee. A recurring annual fee, actually (I notice the website doesn't state how much it is - or if they do you must need to search for it because I checked the site out). it looks good on paper, but that extra fee (extra beyond the fees for any loans you need)... I'm pretty much a miser, so if I can avoid any extra fees, I will.

Now on another personal note: I HATE Bank of America. HATE them. I admit my current mortgage is with them, but the heck they put me through that was TOTALLY unnecessary --- well, let's just say they mismanaged my file so badly that I actually gave a mortgage "specialist" a nervous breakdown on the phone. As in she started crying, screaming, threw the phone, and ran away screaming "I can't do this anymore" fading away in the background. This because she sat on my file for 2 weeks (and thus it was nowhere NEAR ready) and I had less than a week before closing. She was in a world of hurt. And I was pretty pissed off at BoA.

So that's my opinion in a nutshell. I'd rather just pay the whole tuition and get it over with. Besides, I have enough to think about without yet ANOTHER bill to pay each month.

Anyone with professional financial experience want to chime in here so these soon to be MSI's can avoid my prejudiced views?

anyone going to UNECOM next year want to go for free? well it means serving back time as a military doctor, but it does mean 100% tuition, 100% books paid for plus 1300+ bucks a month in a stipend, plus as a resident in the military you will make 20,000 more than a civilian in residency, (you get capt base pay ~$40,000 + living stipend of 1200 a month + specialty pays being a doctor officer, and you and your whole family has 100% dental and medical coverage) Oh yeah military has 87-92% match rate, versus 80% regular match. anyways if you are interested send me personal message, and I will send you the phone number of my medical recruiter in Portland!

have fun... oh yeah studying for boards sucks!

I think the military is potentially a really good way to go. Being a former Army Medic I have given it serious consideration and consulted a variety of docs. Simply by the numbers it doesn't pay. Even with a modest income calculation I figure after you get everything above and pay off your time debt you will have lost a minimum of 200K. Much more depending on your specialty. Having said that I know the military offers some pretty good training and experience. In addition, not having the debt burden up front would be nice during school. I was talking with a doc friend of mine and venting a little about the debt but he encouraged me not to worry that I will look at it differently in the future. Granted he is in a specialty, but it was still nice to hear. It's hard to be chill...

Second that. I personally found BOA terrible (for undergrad) and I won't give them another cent. Other companies are better- customer service and deal wise.

Just to level the playing field here-

1. military medstudents get incentives for signing up newbies

2. Don't believe all the recruiters- some flat out lie. I spent a few hours with one (navy) and he definitely mislead me and did not deliver the whole story about what my committment would be. Along with those in your class who are doing the military program......it's best to check with the people in your class who have been in the military (as a medic etc.), but are not doing the military med program. I can think of 3 guys in my class who were in the military before entering med school and have shared very compelling stories about why they aren't doing the military med program for med school.
Also- you don't need to sign-up for the program before school to get the benefit. It may be a good program for you but BE OBJECTIVE and get all the facts before you sign your life away. Some deals really are too good to be true. Just a thought.

One more thing- I precepted with 2 ER docs who did the airforce program for med school/residency (they've finished their committment) and asked both if they'd choose to do the military program again if they were just starting out- they both said they wouldn't.

Shy:

Interesting...I had a similar experience, but mine occurred the day before closing on my new house 9 states away (if I did my math correctly). They had told me everytime I called that everything was all set. The day before, I was told that they could not approve my loan, as they did not have all the paperwork. I ended up stopping at Staples stores from Maine to North Carolina to fax all the freaking paperwork again. I was pretty pissed. My next loan will be with a bank that is more respectful and honest.

My opinion, but based on a similar experience as yours.

Hi Guys,

Sorry been away. But glad to see that everyone is taking care of business... where is Fozzieee.. he was in the news in Maine!!!.

If you like more info about Army, Airforce or Navy, just state which one and I am sure, I or someone on here can direct you to someone in our class who decide to sign up.

I personally don't agree with that.. but that is because I am a Canadian.. and I still get emails from them trying to recruit me. I was actually told that I can sign up... but I would have to give up my citizenship since I would be an officer. Hmmmm No thanks.

I got also 22k+ fee even after I went on the extended plan and won't be taking full load.. or any classes in the fall. I guess its charge now.. figure things out later.

ok leveling
Med students DO NOT get any money for getting new people referred. Only enlisted people who refer a new ENLISTEE get some money.

Second,
yes you don't need to sign up before school, however, the longer you wait you will have to pay the school, for first year, then if you decide to do it you don't get back pay for first year and you miss out on the stipend.
Also you said Navy, well Navy and AirForce are all downsizing their medical corp, The army is the only one with the newest facilities and expanded programs. I looked into the airforce program and I got a big run around from them.

So here is the deal about the money. Yes you will make a little less money after your residency when people can jump into 150-200K a year salaries, however, you have to pay thousands in Malpractice insurance so really how much money are you really making?? You pay no malpractice insurance in the military. Also, when your "serve back" time is done, thats when you can get some pretty hefty resigning bonuses, and I have seen some as high as 40-50K a year on top of your salary, which by the time you are served back you would most likely me a MAJOR 0-4, your base pay will be 60,000 K plus monthly living stipend (to pay your mortgage, utilities, (convertable pmt)) of around 15,000K so just think about it look into it, the representative will be on campus during your orientation. Have fun. and Docs I have talked to that did the military have a mixed feeling, a few I talk to say it was the best.. hours in residencyh were not crazy, to, I wish I had done it another way, either way you'll find both sides to the equation.

hey guys- do we have to pay for noteservice, or is this something that is provided for us? i think i will be using that. also- would anyone recommend taping lectures and listening to them during down time (on the treadmill etc.) I am trying to set up some good study habits, but wanted to see what you MIIs have been doing :)

I was in it, but never used it. I went to 95% of every class we hahd, never used noteservice, partly because I took my own notes during class, and partly when you are in note service you have to scribe 2-3 times a semester and that can take 5-8 hours, depends on how fast you type. But if you don't want to scribe you have to pay someone to do it, and it was 40 bucks a shot. so I felt 120 bucks was not worth it for something I didn't use. But noteservice was free, I think, at least that is how us MSIII's set it up for our class. every year your individual class sets up their noteservice.

First, congratulations to all 2011'ers.

We (Fossie and myself) are here at Brooks AFB in San Antonio, TX. Greetings Doc Bill

No matter what anyone says, the Air Force is the best branch of service. They treat you better as a person and use more common sense than most other branches. I have over 13 years experience in the Army to be able to make this comment. There is truth that recruiters will tell you what you want to hear... so get everything in writing and don't take anything else.

Though the Air Force pays you, if you took out student loans you would be making the same amount of money. Probably a little more seeing that the military only reimburses you for the cost of books (no tax or shipping reimbursement). The best point of any service HPSP is lack of malpractice and no student loans after you have completed your obligation.

So, Army and Navy... we here at the Air Force have been through the centrifuge and exposed to 5g's, the altitude chamber, spacial disorientation demonstration, went to NASA for space medicine introduction, went to BAMC (Brooke Army Medical Clinic) to view the Burn center and the Center for the Intrepid. We have had simulated training for triage, and been exposed to what the Air Force has for Critical Care that can be provided in flight. The list goes on... bottom line, if you have to decide, I believe that the Air Force is the best choice. The unfortunate part is that the AF has to turn people away... Army... not so much... you figure it out.

Just like the medical field, always be sure to get more than one opinion.

Good luck everyone and we will meet in a few weeks!:)

The best point of any service HPSP is lack of malpractice
A point worth mentioning about this is that the service member cannot sue, but the family members of the service member CAN. So there is still malpractice, but it does not occur as frequently.

no student loans after you have completed your obligation
Another point to consider is that you will not have student loans as long as you can live within the amount of money given in the stipend. Two people (that I know of...there may have been more) in my class ended up having to take loans to be able to support their family while using HPSP.

Steve, I could not put it any better myself! It has been a blast down here. I'm prior enlisted (NY Air National Guard, LC-130 Crew Chief) so I can totally go on and on about how great the USAF is on many levels.

DocBill: HULLO!! How are you? Why haven't you called me in forever?!

I would like to say this: We are not trying to recruit from the forums. Just trying to clear some misconceptions/level the field so to speak. San Antonio is wicked hot and loads of fun. We have been exposed to a lot in a short amount of time and getting PAID for it! I am happy I made this choice, I agree it is NOT for everyone and please please please DO NOT sign an HPSP contract just for the $$$. Check out the military medicine forums to see just how grumpy some people are for making a poorly educated decision.
All the benefits have been outlined before so I won't drone on about them I will say this: You are not gauranteed the specialty of your choice! Recruiters will say that to you just to get you to sign your life away. You have a choice BUT if a spot is not available the military will put you where they need you until its time to re-match (aka: GMO tour). N E WAYS, if you have any specific questions about life, the universe and everything UNECOM related feel free to IM, PM, or whatever me.
Cheers,
Stevo

menard and fozzie... so what.. you say hi to docbill and not to me?

See if I share any more tablet "secrets" with you! :p

Hey Everyone,

This may be considered hijacking a thread, so if it is I apologize.

I'm applying to UNECOM this cycle and it is ideal for numerous reasons not related to medicine (Love Maine/NH, family, friends, etc.). My only concern is the concentration of primary care on 3rd and 4th year rotations. I want to keep all specialty options open and experience as many different aspects of medicine as possible and am concerned that UNECOM may not be the best fit in this case. Does anyone have an opinion on whether my concerns are valid?
(The '07 matchlist has a good mix of specialties, so that partially answers my question.)

Is it inevitable that you will have to travel alot for 3rd & 4th year rotations, or is there a good chance that the rotations can be done within a 60-90 mile radius?

Thanks in advance for any help. PM me if you don't want to clutter this thread.

UNECOM doesn't have a specific focus on primary care (of and beyond other schools) during 3rd and 4th yr. I believe we tend to focus a bit more on geriatrics during Yrs. 1+2 but our curriculum is very similar to other schools, MD + DO alike. We do have a nutrition course during our first year which many MD schools lack (don't know about other DO schools.) We have to complete an AHEC rural rotation but many other med schools have a similar req. If you work hard, you'll be able to match in whatever specialty you want. In my opinion, UNECOM grads are self selecting and many choose to enter primary care.

As a school, UNECOM officially states that one of it's main goals is to produce excellent primary care docs.

You have a good chance of doing rotations in Maine 3rd year. Good luck!

BTW, I agree that the Air force is the best option!!! Think about it, its the only place you can get high and its A - OK! Plus you should see Menardst in his funcky jumpsuit!!! "Even I felt it move" .. as quoted by George on signfield. Haaaaa:love:

Nice piece on your work this summer. That experience is priceless.

I am back in Toronto, so long distance from cell phone is a Bia$%Ch so no can do. But i do use skype. If you are on there. Say hi to your GFriend

BTW, those people I told you about.. still giving me a hard time. You would not believe it. I am ready to open up a can of kick ass on them. The only problem.. is I don't know who is in charge anymore.. things always shift around.. transformer!!!

the only "perk" was maybe being considered for an army achievment award, it allows you to put a ribbon on your dress uniform.

we are all partial to our respective branches, I chose army because I did not want to do a GMO tour, if I don't get my first match I will do a PGY-1 rotating intership, but thats my take on it, in all reality we are all on the same team, and at the end of the day we salute the same flag and we will care for the men and women and their famiies of the military.
have fun guys down there, I would much rather be doing that then having to sit inside for days on end studying for boards!
