It all depends on how much u liked the non-match school. If you liked the school, I think u should just go for it and get over waiting and being stressed out

What is up with NYU calling on Tues 10/13 for interviews on Friday and Sat 10/16 and 10/17?
They apologized for calling so late. I wonder if they have sent out earlier invites and I'm just an alternate list?

Hey Barbwire,
congrats on the offer, are we going to be co-residents?

Anyway if you see posts from other threads here on SDN, you'll see candidates with 1 interview and matched and others with over 6 interviews and don't match. And yet others with just the opposite as well (ie. 1 interview and don't match and over 5 interviews and match to 1st choice).

I guess it depends on if you really like this program you're offered. and also if you know for a high certainty you have a great interviewing skills and can kick ass on these interviews for match programs. Plus if you really want to go to a particular match program .;)

I think that you would be totally safe with staying in Match. Remember you are going to be at a program for 2 yrs+ and you don't want to settle at a program that isn't one of your top choices. Also, look at the cost and reputation of the program. I know lots of people who matched ortho with 5 interviews. Good Luck!

And for everyone who matched with 5 interviews, there is someone else who didn't. KlingonDentist had it right...it depends on how much you like the program and how confident you are in your interview skills. If you're "settling" for your 2nd or 3rd choice, then I say take it and drop Match. Its not worth the risk in my opinion. I think cost and reputation can be over-rated, especially cost...but thats just me.

I dunno...comparing $200k more debt over 3 years vs. getting a stipend and earning money during 2 years....cost can be a factor IMO.

Off topic guys...Is anyone interviewing at West Virginia on Nov 2 flying in from Pittsburgh want to rent a car together? I get in Pittsburgh on Nov 1 around 10:30am. My interview is in the morning on 11/2, and will head to the airport right after lunch. PM me if interested. Thanks :)

Contrary to the rumors spread by those who don't understand the match, there is no "safe" number of interviews that will ensure a high likelihood of matching. The more interviews you have, the more chances you have of hopefully one program ranking you high enough so that when the algorithms are run on match day, you'll open the email that says "Congratulations" and not the other email.

The most I have heard is 9 interviews, no match. Yes it is possible. You could go on 9 interviews and every program could choose not to rank you and therefore you will end up with no match. Programs do not have to rank every candidate they interview, just like applicants do not have to rank every interview they attend. On the other hand, I have met plenty of 1 interview and matched candidates too. But you can never really know if those people were just super awesome and lucky or if their grandpa had funded the orthodontic clinic redo the year before.

The match stats are the same almost every year. About 500 students enter the ortho match (meaning they had at least 1 interview and submitted a match list) and about half of those secure a position in the match. Of the 250 who get a position in the match, the majority (160) get their number 1 choice. These numbers are available to view on the match website and look very similar to the numbers I have seen for the past 7 years. People who accept positions outside of the match are not included in these statistics because they are not submitting match lists.

To sum it up, if you have an acceptance, take it.

Dr Sameer,

nice gpa and rank. your nbde can be an issue. You will get a few interviews but don't expect alot. (Assuming you're applying to 40+ schools, u may get 3-4 interviews).

Also how can you be 2nd rank if your gpa is 4.0? Is #1 in your class gpa 4.01?

I don't understand how anybody can get 4.0 in dental school. Outta this world! Great job!

Does anyone know approximately what the tution cost is for UT Houston for in-state and out-of-state? I hear about the $10k stipend, but no mention of tuition. Thanks for any responses!

Can anyone switch days for the Univ of Pacific interview. I've got it on the 27th and would like to switch for the 26th. Would greatly appreciate it. Just PM me. Thanks

For the Class of 2010, were your board scores taken before the change to the new format.... I heard that what ever you get on the new exam, to add 5 to equal a score from 2010. Is this true. Has anyone heard of the new standards for board scores for applying to ortho? From the new rubric, what is considered a good score?

Have you heard about the new board scores.. did you take your exam before the new format and rubric? I heard a new 89 is equivalent to a 94-96. is that true?what do you think? Also, do GRE scores really matter. What is an acceptable score for applying with a competitive edge.

KlingonDentist hey we have scoring in numbers here.. i m a foreign trained dentist.. my GPA and the person first in class has 4.0 GPA but there is a slight difference in marks.. she has a few more marks than me. thats y i m second.. i m gonna apply for AEGD and ORTHO.. and how can u apply to 40 plus schools isnt the application around 75 dollars for each school???? spending $3000 on applications????

You'll be spending $20,000+ annually in tuition at some schools, so what's $3,000? You forgot the cost of interviews, too. Even if you spend $10,000 on applying and interviewing, it's worth it if you get in. Plus, in applying to more schools, you also have a better chance at getting into a cheaper, shorter school. So the application fees can end up being a wash, or even saving you a ton of money. But just getting in alone is enough to justify that price.

Hi All,

I am a first year ortho resident and I just wanted to share my experience with you:

VERYYYYYYYYY FEW people match to their 4th or 5th ranked school. Meaning, As long as you have 3 interviews, you are in the same boat as someone who has had 21 ! There is NO SAFE NUMBER of interviews. I had classmates with 5 interviews who didn't get in, and with 1 who got in.
Only go with what school and what program you LIKE. That's all. Accept non match spots if you do like the program.

Also, ALWAYS go to the dinner or social scheduled before the interview with the residents. Believe it or not, if you don't show up it might be counted against you as you are " not serious" !

Wish you all the very best of luck! :)

Look to spend about $3000+ on PASS and another $1000+ on Supplemental applications (some schools require to pay more) (this is assuming you're applying to 40+ schools).
If you go to 5+ interviews look to spend $10,000+ (for hotels, car rentals, air tickets, meals etc).
In summary look to spend ~$15,000 just to get a shot at going to a residency program (no guarantees).

If the cost is around $15,000, how do most students pay for this? Do students typically just use loan money?

well, you should also keep in mind that 50% of people entering the match do not match, so those very people must have at least 1 interview to enter the match. So if you have more interviews, your probability of matching just increases. And i'm not sure if having 3 interviews is the same as having 21 interviews, that's just stretching it a little bit, but at least, it means there is hope. :) good luck everyone.

Match questions never end~ I think I understand the rules and also we rank according to what we like. Then I still came up with this question:

How does a program rank? Say there's program accepts 5 residents every year. Does the program rank 5 people as number 1 or still go down the list? Technically, the program have 5 people they want the most, and we applicants have only 1 program we want the most. For example, if an applicant ranks a program #2, and the program ranks the applicant #3 (even though the program wants the applicant as much as the others, because there're 5 spots). The applicant would be matched to another program probably 3rd on his/her rank list, because the #2 program decided to put him/her #3 among the 5 applicants they all really want.

I don't know if this makes sense. Sorry to bother everyone.

catfish, you're putting too much thought into the match. Ignore how the programs are going to rank you. Your only job is to rank the programs you like.
If u must know, the programs will rank 1,2,3,4,5,...,15 (for example) for 5 spots just in case they don't get their 5 favorite students.

Hi Smile09.
I am going to an Ortho social and interview in a couple of weeks and I was wondering if you have any tips? like what type of questions they usually ask?and what are the big no-no's at the interview( and the social)? would appreciate your reply:)

Hi Orthoman09. Could you share your experience at the interview and the social with us? thanksss:)

This is incorrect. Read the match site:
http://natmatch.com/dentres/index.htm
http://natmatch.com/dentres/dencomm.htm

This misunderstanding leads to people thinking the match is some random system that makes no sense - "If a program ranks me #2, then I have to rank them #2, so we 'matched' our rankings." That would be insane.

In the scenario you mentioned, the first 5 candidates on the program's rank list, despite being actually ranked 1-5, are essentially ranked #1. Those 5 candidates are guaranteed to match at this program at least, unless one of them matches at a program they ranked higher. It is the "stop point" on those 5 candidates' rank lists, there's no chance they'll match any lower. The program with 5 spots could randomly shuffle their top 5 spots and the match would end up exactly the same; every program could randomly shuffle the top spots they have available (e.g., top 4 in a 4 resident program, etc.) and the match would end up exactly the same.

Sometimes programs will get cocky and only rank a handful of students expecting that all of those students will match at that school. Then come match day, those students have all matched elsewhere and the cocky program is left with post-match spots - UNC in 2005 and Buffalo in more recent years.

There is an EXTENSIVe posting on the match process that is stickied in this at the top of this forum.

What if you absolutely cannot go to the social because you're at another interview that day? Should you email the program director/chief resident and explain or just hope for the best on interview day?

Also, ALWAYS go to the dinner or social scheduled before the interview with the residents. Believe it or not, if you don't show up it might be counted against you as you are " not serious" !

Wish you all the very best of luck! :)[/QUOTE]

I have a question regarding Post Match. Is it common for an applicant to post match at a program they didn't apply or a program where they applied but was not offered an interview? How quickly do the post-match spots fill up? What is the process of post-matching exactly (contacting directors, etc)? Sorry for bringing up a concern that has yet to materialize for the majority of us. :scared:

Ive been excepted to a nonmatch program and I have been trying to push off replying to them. The program is not high on my list. How bad is it to accept and then go through MATCH, and if you place in match back out of the program? They're still getting my deposit at least.......

You really don't want to piss off anyone especially ortho programs. Word travels fast in this community if you're not a man or woman of your word. And don't back out of a matched position either. very bad. You have to make a decision, period.

There was a student that was accepted to a pre-match school, and he/she accepted the position but did not withdraw from match. He/She then matched at an ortho program and he/she is currently a 1st year resident and doing well. While the pre-match school was upset, she is still going to be an orthodontist. I assume she probably lost the deposit. Like I said you shouldn't settle if you do not feel like it is a good fit for you.

you're right, u shouldn't settle for a non-match program if you don't feel comfortable with it. But then one has to decide and decline the non-match offer to go through the match. You're probably right that person probably got off by losing a few thousand $, but IMO u gotta do it the right way... the gentleman/woman's way. Just my humble opinion.

I know a girl who accepted the offer from my program (it used to be a non-match program) but she still turned in the match list. On the match day, she matched to another program and decided to stay at that matched program…..my program director had to find another resident to fill her spot.

10 years ago, I took an offer from a non-match ortho program (Northwestern U) and was asked to withdraw from the match. Two months later, the Northwestern Univ ortho program director told me that the University would be closed in 2 years and it no longer accepted new residents….that news really ruined my Christmas. If I broke my promise and turned in the match like that girl above, I would have matched to my top choice program. I had to reapply the following year….and this time, I also got accepted to a non-match program:).

Anybody heard from Jacksonville yet?

The problem is that accepting a position usually requires you to withdraw from the Match. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe a program can inquire with NATMATCH to see if you are still in the match. If you accepted and didn't withdraw, they might withdraw your offer, and possibly contact other schools. This is the real problem with non-match programs. They prey on your insecurities to try to get who they want rather than favoring the applicants like those programs that do participate in the match.

Hi! Those with interview offers at UPenn, did you get a confirmation email after requesting a date? I emailed her back to request a date, but never got any confirmation, and was wondering if I need to call in to confirm. Thanks!
