OMFS 2010 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The following suggests that if you rank all your interviews, 53% match at 1, 72% at 2 or better, 82% at 3 or better, 87% at 4 or better, etc.

MATCH RESULTS
GPR AEGD OMS PED ORTHO TOTAL
Applicants Matched 573 149 200 285 252 1459

Match Results by Rank on Applicant’s List
Number Matched
Rank Number GPR AEGD OMS PED ORTHO TOTAL
1 392 122 106 169 166 955
2 118 16 38 48 48 268
3 41 8 19 39 19 126
4 15 2 11 15 10 53
5 4 1 10 5 4 24
6 or higher 3 0 16 9 5 33

Did you only want to include those who were accepted into an OMFS program, or ALL applicants that applied for a program (accepted or not)? The numbers you crunched only take into account the people who were accepted into a program.

Of those ACCEPTED into an OS program last year:
106/200 (53%) of accepted applicants got their #1 choice, but there is realistically about 350ish people applying for OS.

Of ALL the applicants who participated in match (whether they matched or not):
106/350 got their #1 choice = 30%
144/350 got at least #2 = 41%
163/350 got at least #3 = 47%

Not quite as reassuring.

Not all 350 people get interviews though. So you can't base the statistics off of total applicants. Right?

It's total qualified applicants, "qualified" meaning minimum of one interview.

Oooo. Good point, so do we know how many applicants get interviews?

350! That number is "qualified applicants" which = applicants who got at least 1 interview.

i heard they are appealing the accrediation status. not enough faculty. if you are in a program that loses accrediation, then you are in limbo... even if metrohealth becomes a part of case, there's no guarantee that they will take any of their residents...

Does anyone know of someone who got an interview from one of the programs on the list after the initial emails came out? Maybe because of other people not being able to make the interview dates.

I always hear that no news is good news, so I'm wondering if anyone actually ever gets any interviews later.

I got an interview at Jackson Memorial a couple weeks after their invites were sent out. I hope this helps.

Yes, for some programs they actually dont send out all of their invites on the first day, and for others they will go to their alternate list when people cant make it. I've gotten an invite this year a week and a half after the initial invites were reported.

No news is good news.

Thanks for the replies, I guess that's good news. I've only gotten a few rejections emails but I haven't heard from many from the list (approx 7 or 8). I'm hoping I'll get an invite later on, I'm really counting on it

So does it still hold true that if you get about 7 interviews you got a pretty good chance??

I am also in the same boat. I have officially received rejections from couple of programs only, so hoping I will atleast be able to get one interview.

Ultimately what others have said before still holds true: It is very relative how many interviews you are getting, and difficult to measure how competitive you are.

If you are an all-star and you get 7 interviews, but only apply to 7 programs, then you're probably fairly excellent.

If you applied to 50 programs and got only 7, then you still probably have a "good chance" but then that depends on how good you think is good.

Certainly though, if you can get 7 interviews either way, you are competitive enough and if you shine on your interviews, you should be fairly comfortable with matching.

you don't think that somebody that applied to 7 and got 7 interviews has just about the same chance at matching as someone that applied to 50 and only got 7?

I was under the impression that the numbers etc went out the window at the interview and it was all an even playing field? what do you guys have to say about that? Do programs still weigh board scores and rank etc when deciding where to rank potential residents or is it really purely based on their experience interviewing you?

let me know what you think.

No, I don't think they have the same chance. I don't think "numbers" totally goes out the window, although the playing field is probably fairly level during interviews (plus, there is more to your overall app than just your board score and GPA. Leadership? Research? Extracurriculars that show your motivation and/or experience? Community service?).

But 1) programs may still look at your overall application after the interview, and 2) a stellar applicant isn't just getting 7/7 interviews because he has a 99 on his boards, there are likely a number of things that go into it that make him a good interview, as well, such as externships or leadership or whatever else.

I know a few applicants who have been accepted in the past with pretty poor class rank and not so hot board scores. I also am aware of some applicants who smoked boards and were #1/#2 in the class and did not match. I have had program directors tell me that once you get an interview it is all about how you "fit" with the program. I am inclined to think that once you are in the interview those two things don't mean as much as they did before the interview.

I agree that the interview is the most important aspect and "fit" is certainly what they are looking for. I also know of those with great numbers that don't match. Of course, there are also those with 8 interviews that don't match and those with 3 that do. The original question was about the "magic" number 7.

But as I said in my last post there is more to your app than 1) rank 2) board scores. I think those do little beyond get your foot in the door. But letters of rec? Externships? Other activities and involvement? Leadership?

You can be extremely charismatic but if you havent done anything for 3 years in dental school that will impact many interviewers perception of you. Not all, but many.

I've been told that a certain school this year invited 40+ applicants for interview. I don't think their rank will be 100% based on how the interview goes.

What do you say to someone who has good scores (90+), a good GPA (4.0), great letters of rec and in unable to get their foot in the door/interviews?

Just been coming across folks from dental school that are good on paper and are active but they're not getting those interviews. Any advice? What else does it take? Seems like luck also has a role....

Good luck with interviews everyone!

Has anyone gotten any additional invitations from the list of schools already listed. I know some people responded before with a few invitations, but are there any more?? getting kinda desperate now, so just trying to keep my hopes up.

Keep repeating to myself that no news is good news. I dunno how long that's gonna hold up.

People on the thread are saying that "no news is a good news" but until when. Is there any deadline for this. Can anyone tell me, ok this is the date until which you can wait for interview invitation.Any input will be appreciated.

No news is actually just no news. It is neither good nor bad. It is annoying. Last year I got one interview about 2.5 weeks prior to the date. I presume I was a backup. That was as long as I had to wait. A couple places I just never heard from. The interview season is long and crazy. Try not to stress yourself out too much. Best of luck to you all.

So i'm guessing when you're a backup, you're already at a disadvantage because they really didn't want you but decided to fill up all the interview spots... so you're the leftover.... kinda sad really.

This no news is good news stuff is really stressful. I rather just know if they will inteview or not rather than keep refreshing the inbox a billion gazillion times a day.

I do agree that most programs would like to fill their interview spots and just call people few days before interviews. The good thing is atleast you have a chance to prove yourself. All the programs want people with good scores and grades. But also they might think that the candidates with high grades might not rank them. So to save themselves from embarassment sometimes they do not rank the persons with high grades and i think that is how people with high grades are unmatched most of the times.Matching and ranking can get so tricky and can leave people with nothing inspite of good grades and hard work. It's sad.

I'm not saying this doesn't happen (in fact, I know it does), but everyone realizes it makes no sense, right? A program has literally nothing to lose from ranking every single applicant they believe to be qualified, regardless of whether the applicant ranks said program first or last.

What's the point of being able to tell every you matched your top 3 (or in the case of the applicant, your number one choice), if you specifically selected though people (or programs) solely because you thought they'd "rank you high?"

I heard a great way to phrase it this weekend. A match list (for either programs or applicants) should be your wish list. Nothing else should need to come into play, and it's only when people start misunderstanding how it works that things start to break down.

The way I look at it, if I haven't heard anything and the program has sent out interviews...I cross it off my list.

If the program hasn't sent out interviews and I applied to it...then I still have a chance.

If I get an interview after said program has sent out initial interviews....butter on the bread.

Good luck to all and to all a goodnight.

And +1 with armor...rank it as a wishlist, the match works in the applicants favor, so rank 'em as you want 'em!

so just to clear up something on match....

I know its very unlikely to match after say your 4th choice or something like that. But lets say for whatever reason you interview at ten places and your top 9 choices are filled , but your tenth choice on your rank list ranked you their number 1 or 2 person----- would you still match or at some point does match favor an applicant that ranked that program higher than you did even though the program ranked you higher??

not sure if what i just asked makes any sense, but just trying to see why it is so rare to match far down your rank list considering there are only 200 spots for 400 people and if tons of people go to up to 10 or more places i would think some people match quite far down their list, but apparently this does not happen or am i wrong?

please fill me in , thanks.
