For the applicants that have not heard from programs:
Did anyone call the programs to inquire about the status of your applications or is it a good idea to call them up?
 
There is so much overlapping of interview dates across the programs.... how are the selected ones going to figure out which ones to attend? It should a big mess coordinating the travel across the different cities

It actually doesnt seem too bad overall. There are some conflicts here and there and you would be fairly unlucky to have only a few, overlapping interviews. Some programs have said they would be flexible in working out a date if needed.

As for calling, some people call to check if a program has received their application materials or not, or at least the programs they are particularly interested in. Asking for the status however, is probably unproductive, as most info can be found here and the administrators handling the phones are probably overworked during this season. Maybe an e-mail would be more appropriate.
 
Yeah fun and expensive!! I have spent a fortune booking flights and hotels! Good luck!

I am a practicing dentist and have only heard from 6 programs, 3 rejections and 3 invites

Probably a better idea to make your message bold than to make it CAPitalized, if you want to draw particular attention to it.
 
I applied to 14 programs. Recieved 2 rejections from oklahoma and Montefiore.Haven't heard from other programs yet. Do all the programs fix their interviews for one date? Do they invite all the selected candidates at one time? What exactly is the procedure.

I seem to remember a site that could help with hotel prices for interview season, something like biddingfortravel.yuku.com. Check it out. Could save a buck. May have been more helpful earlier, but intern year is nuts. You guys sure you're up for it?

P.S. It's worth it.

has anyone crunched the numbers or heard what number of interviews should give you a damn good shot at matching somewhere. I realize people match in their top 3 all the time and only go on a few interviews, but if you are talking numbers to increase your chances, what is solid number to go on for an excellent chance at the match?

I've heard the magic number is 7 for something like a 95% chance of matching, but all you need is one...

The following suggests that if you rank all your interviews, 53% match at 1, 72% at 2 or better, 82% at 3 or better, 87% at 4 or better, etc.

This has to be flawed though. Take someone who applied to 25, received 1 interview, do they have a 53% chance of matching? Unlikely. What about someone who gets 25 interviews, goes on 1. The 2nd is on paper, better, and more likely to match. Extreme example, but it might skew the data a bit. Just because you have 4 interviews, doesn't mean you are at the 87% mark.

To answer your question exactly, I have heard people say 7-12. Most people say a number closer to 7.

for those of you that have interviews that no dates work....

I am really bummed that i have a couple interviews at programs that I really wanted to go to both but unfortunately the dates conflict. What is the best thing to do , especially if you may have committed to one interview and then later got a letter from another program. Its very hard for me to figure out which one to go to as I don't have all that many interviews lined up.

I am really bummed that i have a couple interviews at programs that I really wanted to go to both but unfortunately the dates conflict. What is the best thing to do , especially if you may have committed to one interview and then later got a letter from another program. Its very hard for me to figure out which one to go to as I don't have all that many interviews lined up.

same here Highland and Metrohealth are on the same wk end. bite the bullet and go with your gut feeling.
 
if metrohealth is not accredited, then is it really such a dilemma?
 
So what is the story on this program? Seems kind of scary to even rank them. So what happens if you match there and then they don't get accredited? They said something about merging with Case, Is it possible you could just be out of luck and not have a spot anywhere?

Never was a dilemma. that made the decision easier. but the point is if 2 programs have the same interview date i would have came to the same conclusion. i would have chosen the program i would have liked to match to.
