NSUCOM Class of 2006!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Okay Kevin,

Brian called me today to let me know that once all the papers are signed, we too will have an address... (so she may be coming to live with us after all...). We are going to be on the 1st floor of Cedar Key in Building 9 (does anyone know which building that is...Quinn...?)

Yippie!!! I have a home (and no stairs to lug my furniture up!!!)

:D

BUMP! Eek! Where is everybody?

Just wanted to say "howdy" and ask if we ever got an answer to the earlier question of: is there a match list for Nova to be found ANYWHERE??? Just wondering...

Thanks! :D

Happy Earth Day!

I'm here PCG! :D

Don't be a-skeered

I check the boards all throughout the day 'cause its boring as hee-haw here at work, but I don't always post. Sorry :(

And about the match list....I think that everyone got residencies as prison doctors throughout the country-per their training. hehehe

I don't know what to do either... our home is not up and running..... :(

I received a letter today or actually a receipt/billing invoice which stated pending loan info for stafford 4250 sub and 9625 unsub....

Mike

Everyone can relax....Vash the Stampede is here!!!! *fanfare, cheering, women oogling*

Anyway, sorry about not posting PCG....I've been working...I actually found a job..... :D cutting lawns :( Oh well...I've been busy working on a nitrous oxide attachment for my boss's rider lawn mower. Hopefully I won't loose any fingers, eyes, ears, or hair follices in the process. I figure if it works, I can get the lawns done in no time and have enough money to buy dissection kits, coffee, ephedrine, you know...thingsk to keep me going after long hours of studying...heheh!

Well, anyway, hope you all are doing ok. By the way, anyone get loan info back yet?

BUMP!

Nema

I don't know where building 9 is. I think I was building 4... i was right across from the dental school... #7212. Hope you get it.

If I get a hold of a NSU Match list, I'll post it up here. I'll do some snooping around. AZCOM posts their match list. I haven't seen any other DO Programs do that though.
Q

Thanks Quinn, that helps. :)

Mike- I also got a letter yesterday, my pending aid is: 4250 sub and 9625 unsub (I thought we got 15 per semester??? I definitely qualify for full aid, so I'm a little confused about getting less than the max?). :( I'm going to try to call fin aid today because I definitely need more than that to sustain me!!!

Does anyone know whether we will find out about our alternative loans through Nova or from the company itself (I applied for a Wells Fargo medical loan through Nova fin aid, but they haven't sent me anything regarding it yet?)

Yeah,
I got the letter too with the same amount as everyone else. I called today and she said that we would get our award letters soon. I am really wondering about the alternative loans too. This money situation is starting to stress me out.

Okay, here's the scoop-du-jour concerning financial aid. I spoke with Angela (1-800-356-0026, ext. 1128) about this billing invoice with the pending balance of $13,875.00. (Sub - 4,250.00, unsub - 9,625.00)

First of all, there are two disbursements for the Fall (August to Dec.) and Winter (Jan. to May) terms. The invoice we've received is apparently just a "default invoice" and is not indicative of the amount we will be awarded. She said that osteopathic students' financial aid apps. are being reviewed, but we (1st year students) won't receive an actual award until July. And, as long as all our documents are turned in (in a timely manner) and our EFC isn't too high on the FAFSA, we will receive $38,500.00 per year.

And, if you're like me, and you're applying for additional funds through a private lender...
Once our federal loan is certified and created by the financial aid office, the private lender will contact us individually by sending an application which will act as a promissory note.

So, it looks like we just wait ( ) and all our money concerns should be laid to rest. (At least until we sign the promissory notes and have to actually contemplate taking responsibility for it all)

Oh, the 800 number above is for the financial aid office supposedly on our campus. They are more familiar with our program and are better equipped to answer the questions of panicky first years (to-be).

Missy :)

Missy--
Thanks for that info!! I love it when everything is spelled out for me. I ain't 2 brite somtimes!!!! :)
Ok, could you point me in the right direction regarding the alternative loan. I keep getting run in circles by FA. They have told me to wait until the reward info comes to fill it out so I'll know how much to ask for. But everybody else tells me to do it ASAP. So, since I agree that I need to do it now, what forms EXACTLY did you fill out and send out, or what URL's did you use, etc...give me the low down Missy cuz I need ya. Speak to me as if you were speaking to your dog!!! Real simple and step-by-step. Hope that I'm not too much trouble. I'll be your best friend! Thanks!!!

Anyone know the exact numbers for ostopath. students living off campus? I think it's somewhere around 40G's...don't quote me on that though.

Yeah. here goes...
For 2002-2003 FA Year, Non-res. Off campus Osteopathic student's budget has been set to the following:
Books and supplies: 4085
Miscellaneous: 2000
Room and Board: 10226
Stafford Fees: 1155
Tuition and Fees: 26520
Transportation: 2822

TOTAL: $46,808.00

Sit, Shibby...Stay. Good boy!

Alright-y, as far as applying for additional loans through a private lender, it would make sense to wait if you had a high EFC or were approaching your stafford loan limits and thought you might not be eligible for the full stafford loan. BUT, assuming you and I are in the same place, we *should* get that amount without any trouble. So, I filled out the NSU authorization for addition loans/lenders and requested $8308 (difference of 46808-38500).

To fill out the form:
A. Go to www.webstar.nova.edu
B. Click on the link for "general financial aid"
C. You can complete the online "entrance interview" (required) here and the "financial aid forms"
D. You can electronically submit the information, it will require your id and pin.
E. I completed the NSU authorization form (that was the one they mailed to us a while ago) and the addt'l loans/lenders form.
---The latter form requires you to choose a lender (I selected Wells Fargo) and submit the total amount of funds you need ($8308)

To see which forms you've already submitted and check the status:
A. On webstar, log in to the secure area.
B. From student services & financial aid page, select student records.
C. Click on financial aid.
D. Click on Student requirements.
This will show you the forms (ex: loan application - Complete, NSU authorization form - Approved...)

So far that's what I've done and, hopefully, I'm doing it correctly. The financial aid office has become my new best friend.
Good luck with it!

Missy :D

Hey Missy,
Thanks for all the info. I think that I am still a little slow though. So, even though the amount that we got sent only said 13thousand something, we probably will be getting the 38 thousand something. Sorry to be such a bother. Thanks so much.

Barb

You go Missy! I called and spoke with a Becca person at Fin Aid yesterday, but I didn't get nearly as much info as you did, although she did say that these are only unofficial awards and that we should be getting our official awards in May or June....

I guess we can't all be getting shorted, so we just shouldn't (or at least try not to) worry until we get the actual aid package. I also forgot to ask about the alternative loans (I went through Wells Fargo too) because they didn't appear. When I spoke to fin aid previously, they just told me to put "max" for the amounts on that lender sheet (the one that was suggested to Shibby). :D Okay, that's all my input for now. At least we're all going through fin aid hell together..... what a bonding experience.

Wow, that number was alot higher than I expected Shibby! Five grand for books and supplies! Please tell me they overexaggerated that one!

Missy--You the girl!Thanks!!!
Nema--I wish I were kidding. Actually that figure is ok, because I think the living expense figure is a bit low considering the cost of rent in the area...So, if we can get by with less moo-lah for the books, then we can use that for other important things...you know, like movie passes, suntan oil, and poker bets...the stuff that REALLY makes a great doctor.
On an unrelated note, if the Class of 2005 really "ruled," then they would have 18+ pages of messages like us. :p

I think stickboy's guide on our class website has the scoop on books and equipment.

Yes the class of 2005 DOES rule.....(<whispering> we'll need them to tutor us...shhhh)

No one is making the statement "we rule over your class." Unfortunately, we are in NO position to compare ourselves with the clean slate of 2006- not with the way our class was slaughtered in the renal exam. Your class may have many of us joining you next year (this fall). I know it's selfish and inconsiderate for us to whine, "if only the renal/endocrine professor hadn't died this semester-we wouldn't be in this state of affairs!" But alas, it has been both thought and spoken by most of us. I mean, if a masters student that took renal physio last year, scored a 96% on the test, then this year failed-what's up with that? There may be some of us that you'll be calling "classmate." Please, physio god, don't let me be that old guy that sits in the back!
 :D
Kate
PS Any 2005ers vote (as a write-in, of course) Dr. Lyons as professor of the year? Would he even get renal professor of the year? Personally I voted for Ron Jeremy aka Dr. Z (yeah, whatever).

Kate-Why in the hell would ou call Dr. Z Ron Jeremy???!!!

Ok, anyway...

Hey, when is everyone moving to Ft. Lauderdale. this summer?

Nema,
Dr. Z (radiology prof.) looks just like Ron Jeremy. Its the class nickname for him. If you look at Stickboy's GOAT on the 2006 website (not actually Stickboy's terms, just collected by him) you'll see "Z'd," aka "Zimmel'd." This refers to our Dr. Jeckle/Mr. Hyde type radiology professor that just happens to look like Ron Jeremy.
By the way, how did the P-1s get out of taking renal physio? Why did they import Dr. Lyons just for the M-1s? I'd say renal is VERY important in drug metabolism (as you can see I like to share my torture).

Kate

Nema- Me and my stuff will be arriving around the 2nd or 3rd of July (why, are you offering to help us all move in?)

I honestly cannot wait to get there and meet everyone! C'mon time, keep flying like you have been! :D

July 1 here.

I am looking forward to the month off too!

We are planning to use that month to get settled and see all the sights so that when peeps come to visit us, we know where to take em. Not to mention the 3 jobs each is killing us!

My bad Kate, I thought you meant Dr. Z as in Zagvazdin (sp?) the guy who taught some portions of our A&P class in pharmacy. As for renal, we had a portion of it with Dr. Leedham before she passed away. Dr. Taraskevich basically eliminated it from our syllabus. And yes, I do agree, renal is very important as far as drug excretion is concerned, but I think you learn that in Kinetics or in Pharmacodynamics.

Alas, Liz, I cannot offer my services as an amateur mover because I will be coming around July 20th. Hehe, are YOU willing to help a fellow student out with his moving???? :p

Did alot of you guys find places close to the school?

Peace for now!
Nema

Kate--my bad, take it easy.
All others,
Have you guys heard of MarLago(sp?) apartments in Plantation. They have a great deal going, and I was wondering if anyone had a head's up on it. Thanks...

PalCareGrl - I'm with you on the financial aid business...we can't all be shorted. I mean there isn't enough campus space for *all* of us to pitch tents!

Shibby - I haven't heard of that complex in Plantation (can't find it, either)- what have you heard about it?

And, I'm planning on moving to FTL around mid-July which is a good thing because it'll probably take me that long to pack all my stuff!

Missy

Wow, this thread is looooooong! I just wanted to say hi. If you're not from South FL, welcome to Paradise. Have a great time. :D I wish I could stay

GREETINGS CLASS OF 2006! i'm an m1 at nova and was recently elected vp for the internal medicine club for next year. i want to encourage you all to join the club if you have an interest in internal med or any subspecialties. we're gonna try to have a good variety of speakers come in at least once a month and give a talk about their specialty. also we're gonna try to get at least one dinner per semester sponsored by a pharmaceutical company at a nice restaurant. everything is still tentative right now, but we will be sending out an introductional flyer along with your orientation materials this summer. so hopefully you'll see something you like. if any of you have any questions or concerns about the first year, i'll do my best to answer them. if you guys are worried about books, i know our class is planning on having a used book sale for you guys, but i don't know when. anyway, congrats and welcome to nova! :)

as always i remain,
sachin, m1
vp, student osteopathic internal medicine assoc,

Sach,

I am definitely interested in the IM club. Sign me up!! I'll see ya in the summer....

Mike

Hey guys, when exactly are we supposed to be receiving our orientation packets?

Slingster, yeah, there is a Largo Mar golf resort or something and the apartments I'm looking into are right next to it. They are REALLY nice and about 6 miles from NOVA--with traffic I hope it won't take me too long to get there.

How much do the apartments rent for, Shibby?

And, am I the only one who hasn't gotten on a waitlist for an apartment yet? I've been holding out for a roommate (searching..searching...), and have been hesitant to place a deposit without one. Have their been any homeless NOVA students in the past?

Missy

Missy--I think it's like 985 for a two bed/bath, but great amenities, free cable and some utilities, and a pretty low deposit. So, the thing that first came to my mind was, WOW, these things must suck...but I had a friend check it out for me and they said they were fantastic and were close to some really nice homes. The apts. were built in '98, which is VERY recent compared to some. So, right now I think that's where I'll be.

Sachin,
Don't forget to mention Harrison's club (part of internal med club - that will be continuing and expanding, won't it, Sachin?). Every third Fri. afternoon or so students in the internal med club can meet up with a doc at Broward General or Memorial and she/he will give you a taste of what rotations will be like. For those of you that don't know, Harrison's is the Internal Medicine Bible, so to speak-anything and everything for the internal med. doc. Tommy, Sachin, and Chut will be our fearless leaders. By the way, the theme meetings are a great idea (was that yours or Tom's  ?)! I vote for the Iron Chef theme. It may be difficult to get a rising stage for the internists to make their grand entrance, though.

Kate

Hey Guys:

I'm interested in the OMM CLUB and the IM CLUB. Do they meet at the same times. Do the Medical students have a specific time in the day that all meetings are held. Or are meeting mainly scheduled during one's lunch hour.

Thanks

Have a great day
Counting down the days until I get out of Philly.

Hello everyone... I'm still phobic of this thread as I think the last time I was here we were at page 17...

I need EVERYONE's help.. our web server had a crash (I believe, they're being inconclusive) and we lost our message forum database...

Please take a moment now and re-register yourself (and a friend!) and get some topics going!

Since we had some forced down time, I upgraded and re-did a bunch of things so we're better than ever.

NSUCOM Class of 2006 Message Forums

Thanks and I'll be more productive in this forum as soon as I get over how damn big it is...

doc adam:
all club meetings are usually held during lunch as that is the only time everybody doesn't have class. there maybe some conflict with other clubs but usually we try to hold it on days where it's convenient for everyone. uaao usually has there meetings at night because they primarily do omm reviews in the lab.

kate:
thank you for reminding me of harrison's! :) i believe we're gonna try to continue that but we haven't really discussed it yet. everything is still tentative. i'm the theme lunches were all tom's idea. i'm not that creative.

Today was a NOVA mail day! I love seeing that big envelope in the mailbox...

It lists early May as the time when orientation packets will be mailed!!

Hey everyone,
Yes, I was so excited to get Nova mail today. Too bad it wasn't that interesting though. I also got a rejection today from New Jersey  Hey, who would want to be in New Jersey when they could be at NOVA

Barb

Barb- I live one state over from NJ and I'm trying to get father away. There is not a good thing about the state.. alright, The Sopranos, yet there is an exception to every rule..!

Big envelopes from NOVA? Am I missing something? I even sent my last $1000 in early...

I spent today with a few doc friends doing rounds and playing medical Jeopardy! [attendings v. residents] at lunch... reaffirms my life-path! BTW, attendings won, but that is another story....

Gawd, I cannot wait for school to start (I cannot believe I justed typed that )

-A

Big Brian-Don't worry about that last remark...I think all of us are thinking the same thing..even if we won't admit it!

Yeah, what's the deal with the "big envelope" from Nova? What did it contain???? Ohhh the excitement...ok, well not really, but it would be nice to have a follow up to the acceptance letter envelope! :p

Nema

I've gotta admit, I really like getting mail (you know, aside from bills and junk) - and I especially like getting mail from school. OMG, I'm like a NOVA junkie...

Anyway, barb's right, the letter was kind of dull. It's a reminder to send in the last $1000 and to find housing. It also lists orientation as Aug. 5-9 with class starting Aug. 12 and the white coat ceremony on Aug. 24 (the day before my birthday - an early present for me! :D )

Oh, and it requests that we mail in our summer addresses for the rest of the stuff we should be receiving.

So, hope I didn't ruin the anticipation for anyone!

Missy

Hi all-
Regarding clubs, there are quite a few to join, from internal medicine, family practice, neurology, derm, surgery, M-1 vs M-2 ping pong and fuz ball club (an unofficial club-meetings held during all hours in the lounge  )... If you joined every club you could probably eat lunch for free about every other day, and a few dinners per week as well. That is one of the benefits of joining-free food! Most of the meetings for the clubs are held during lunch hour, some are held in the evening. Though most of the time the days meetings are held vary, occasionally there are up to four medical club meetings held at the same time. A lot of the clubs have perks, such as receiving a packet consisting of all the old tests for the last 3 or 4 years (SOMA), or free anatomy reviews (LOG, SOSA). Each club offers something different. I would do as much research as I could before I would join. Most of us just joined what we thought was interesting and have later realized we would have joined others if we had only known the scoop! Do you want to do a medical mission to guatamala? DOCare is for you! How about a trip to Jamaica? Or climbing mountains while learning about wilderness medicine? The OMM club gives a free review (by the fellows and professors) every week! Have you heard of the Doctor's Bag program? Let's not forget all of the IV, suturing, and airway clinics! I could go on and on, and I am not even sure what all is out there (I only joined 5 or so). There are so many clubs-it can be a bit overwhelming to try to learn about them and join all during orientation week when you have so much other things to think about. A lot of the clubs have websites (on the schools webpage), and there are summaries in your student handbook. Fern (the infamous) has the handbook if you didn't pick one up during your interview. They'll send you one-just ask!
By the way, if you guys received info on ordering your white coats-don't send your order in until you know of someone who has went to the place in Miami that you order from to try them on. If they could post what size they normally wear compared with the size they are going to order, it can give those living out of state an idea since they may not be able to make a weekend trip just to try them on. They run small. So, who lives in Miami? It's all on the locals or those that move down early. You guys don't want to make the mistake that many of us did. I have two white coats with sleeves just below my elbow! If you are a tall female-order a male size! Many say they ordered two sizes larger than they normally wear. Best of luck.
Kate

Kate-Again you are a fountain of useful information and we thank you from the bottom of our little ole' hearts!!! Got a question regarding clubs...do most of the specialty ones, like derm, orthopedic, surgery, etc. offer opportunities to shadow doctors in those fields and if so, when does that occur during the week (like after school on weekdays, friday afternoons, weekends....)? Thanks!

Nema

Got my big white envelope today... Maybe it's me... in the back of my head I keep wondering if someone is going to send an official NSUCOM "ha-ha kid, were only kidding, your not coming to school here" letter... Then again, I might be have some sort of weird psychological episode...

White Coat on August 24th? Isn't that usually the last day of Ori-Week? Or is "Opening Exercises" something all together different?

-A

P.S. I like soup.

The white coat ceremony is held at the Broward Performing Arts Center. A lot of people have their family fly in for it. Each student will be have their white coat (the ones you must order, you won't receive them until the ceremony) ceremoniously put on for them by a physician. You will also be pinned by Dr. Silvagni with a "Humanism in Medicine" pin and take an oath. Speakers, pictures, videotapes. You won't have a white coat the first couple weeks of school, you have to wait until the ceremony to receive it. Those first few weeks you'll be thinking that you can't wait until you are able to wear that crisp, white, professional coat. Months later, you'll wish you didn't have to wear the damn thing (and by second semester, most won't, or if they do-it hasn't been washed since first semester).
Kate

I will be going to NOVA this fall. I'm from Florida, and I'm excited. I noticed that there was a request for a matchlist. For some reason, it seems that NOVA wants it to be a military secret. Nonetheless, here you go. See you all in the Fall.
