NSUCOM Class of 2006!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, the hurricaine prediction surprised me too. Yet not to fear....I was at Ft. Lauderdale yesterday and, oddly, the city was working on nearly every drainage ditch between NSU and Surise Blvd. (which is way the hell North from the school for those non-residents :D ) Anyway, yes, Ft. Lauderdale is a very good spot for hurricaines to land...and many of the past ones have come very close to it, but I don't think any have passed directly over it. Honestly, we'll probably have a few scares and a few more days off from school this coming semester.

Anyway, hope everyone will be at the chat tonight at 9. Peace till then!

Hey guys. Im new to the SDN. Im so exicted about starting NSUCOM in the fall. My name is Chris and I am from Rome Ga. I graduated with a Biology Degree in 2001. I currently work in the OR as a scrub. My wife and I are moving to Palm Trace Landings, hopefully we will see some of you there. We are moving in on July 6 which is not to far away.

Q: Does anyone know where to get additional loan money that is not apart of the school. They told me that I could only borrow through them for what was loaded on the budget. Any suggestions would awesome.
My wifes name is Michelle and she is a ele. school teacher.

got to run for now

Chris Nebel

Hello Chris (and Michelle), welcome! :D I think that you should be able to go to most banks and take out a personal loan (I think they also have educational loans). The financial aid office at the school should also have more information about where and how to borrow outside of the budgeted amount (since I'm sure you guys aren't the only ones who have to do this). Best of luck and can't wait to meet ya!

:) Liz

p.s. It was great chatting with the rest of you all last night!!!

I haven't used them yet, but I am looking into it!

Mike

Has anyone called fin aid recently? Any word on our award letters? Just wondering, I was thinking of calling next week if we hadn't heard anything by then... I just love talking to them so hehehe :D

Hey- did anyone get the lab coat size thing figured out? We posted it on our site, but no upperclasspeople bit on it yet...so HELP! What size should we order? (since they have to be in by June 30 and no one will be down there yet....

PalsCareGirl,

According to a (huge, 30-page-long) posting at www.nsucom2006.com by an M2, the white coats run very small. He recommended buying only one coat for now, and ordering two sizes (ie, if you wear an 8, order a 12.... men ordering a 40 would select a 44)) up from your usual size. The second white coat can be ordered orientation week, so if the first is still too small or, on the other hand, too large :) , you can adjust your order.

Hope that helps!

Ooh, thanks I think that helps...but are we allowed to order just one? (the form figures for two, it sounds like a different company from last year)... I didn't remember Stickboy mentioning the coats, but thanks! :D There's one headache gone away real quick...

.....now if I could only find free checking....

Hey.... You're right, you CAN'T order just one. Apparently we got some misleading info. (And honestly, Chris and I can't remember now if we did get that from Stickboy's page or from somewhere else!?) The company called us this afternoon, having received our order for one coat, and said "send more money!" So we'll be sorting all that out in the next couple of days! In other words, DON'T take my advice above!!! :) Sorry about that.

Yeah, that was what Stickboy recommended... too bad that it won't work. I did look back on the NSU class of 2005 thread from last year because I remembered reading something about lab coats, and one of the girls actually posted that she had to order three sizes larger (she wears a four and had to order a twelve) so that it would fit comfortably (and she got fitted by someone at the bookstore working for the coat company). So....if we're ordering from the same company, I guess I'm going to be ordering three sizes larger (better baggy than too small I guess). :D

But thanks for trying Dr Chris's wife (do you have a name?) :)

Wow... I can see it now... practically the entire class of M1s, standing uncomfortably in their new white coats, all thinking, "Darn, why didn't I order three sizes larger like Liz?"

And I didn't mean to be mysteriously anonymous... I'm Michelle! Good luck with your coat-ordering adventure.

Thanks Michelle! :D Welcome to the NSUCOM family! Hopefully we'll all be able to get coats that fit (at least we don't have to worry about layering them over bulky sweaters...) :p Gawd, I can't wait to get to FLORIDA!!!

Just a note, and this note is probably premature, but when you do get your coats, only wear one of them... so that by the time your third year comes around and you actually have to be presentable in your coat, you have one that is 100% clean and not crappy.

On the other hand, I know a lot of people in my class who never wore their lab coats during the first two years, so they look spiffy now. My lab coat (one has blood stains that will not come out, so i really only have one) has paint stains, some blood, and is about bleached beyond recognition. Alas, I have but 10 months to go in it.

Liz: I the quote... I'm defintely the bug this week.... :(

Stickboy DOES talk about white coats... its link off the 2006 site is FOR INCOMING STUDENTS->STICKBOY's GUIDE->MORE TOPICS->MORE TOPICS->White Coats

He mentions 2 sizes larger for the "boys"... didn't mention the "girls"... :)

Ummm... I'm going to sl33p now...

Hello everyone. IS anyone is going to Ft. Lauderdale any time soon for one reason or another? I think I'll go spend a few days there, it's getting boring around here. Just wondering if anyone else will be there anytime this week and might want to meet up. :)

Sorry are bored bonnie. My wife and I will not be down there till the 6th of july.

Q: Does anyone know good place for getting (good) free medical software for your PDA? any suggestions would be great.

Chris

Anyone know anything about NOVA's waitlist? Any Movement?

PalCareGrl,
If this isn't the same company supplying the coats, I wonder if we still need to get them larger? mmmmm. Maybe we could just get them so large that everyone will think we are residents

Bry

Well alright then. I think I'll be going sometime anyway, but definitely next weekend with Will and his parents. They have to see our place and things. If anyone goes down there for visiting any time, let me know, I'll come say hi. I'm going to the shooting range tomorrow for some fun. Can't help it.
Doesn't it seem like we have quite an eclectic group of fellow students? It's gonna be so great to be around all of you.
Anyway, not that I like fighting or anything, but I was forced to watch the fight tonight. Tyson sure got his butt kicked.

He sure did get his but kicked...
That was not the Tyson of the old days...

www.epocrates.com is a good one... I'll try to find the link to another site I have somewhere.....
Also, I can beam you some stuff when we get down there...

Mike

We chatting tonight?

Hey All, to bring a topic over from our website for the rest of ya:

As a group we are ordering our lab coats three sizes larger than normal (i.e. I'm ordering a size 20 since I usually wear a 14)... best of luck (or we'll have to find a REALLY good dry cleaner to shrink 'em for us).

:D

p.s. I'm packing and I'm thinking that my stuff isn't going to fit in my apartment...eek! te he te he...

Hello,

Some of our classmates are having trouble finding housing, so just to let you know some options:

Brian and I are making an effort to match people up from the NSUCOM website (www.nsucom2006.com) so that none of us will be homeless by orientation.

Mary in the admissions office is trying to match people up with roommates, but word is that she is on vacation this week...you can still call to get info though...

Anyone else with info on openings at their apartment complexes, please post up in the roommates section of our message forum on the website. Thanks! :D

QuinnNSU,
You know thats not paint stains on your white coat! And no matter how long you kept one of your white coats clean for it be it two years or five years you still are raggady looking, just like the women at Geronimos.

Hey mike thanks for the info on PDA'S. I already had epocrates..I wish I could find some of the real good ones like Harrsion's on hand for free but im not having any luck.

hope everyone is doing well...

chris

where the hell is our fin. AID?????

For real! I can't even move into slumforest until they get a copy of my award letter. I have to say that this is the slowest financial aid office I have dealt with among the three that I have thus far. And in the smallest school too. I also must say, however, that we had been forewarned. Even on my tour of the school during the interview, the guides all said that fin aid is an extremely weak point in the school. I'm sure we'll eventually get it though. They have only blatantly fibbed to me directly one time about it so I guess I'm lucky  As I have heard a few horror stories.

He He - slumforest - I like that

In a strong effort to prevent a homeless classmate population, we came up with a site dedicated specifically to matching peeps.

NSUCOM Housing Forum

I did speak with one of the dentites (class of 2006), and they are going to refer there also. If I can help in anyway, please let me know...!

P.S. Did anyone besides me NOT set a move date yet???

Brian,

I've moved my date to about the end of July :(
Not much of a vacation for me, but makes more sense.. I should be down there by July 28th or so......???

Mike

Kevin, I think you might end up camping out on our couch anyway, since I think last year the M1's didn't get fin aid award letters til mid-July!!! Can't you just explain that to your management company? (or make your dog bite them if they won't let you move in). :p

BAM! I got my award letter this morning. I knew I laid out of work for a good reason. Hehehe I guess my place in the forest of sun is secured after all Liz.  Now who is sleeping on whose couch?

Congrats Kev! Don't worry, I have my own bed, and those Cedar Key people were okay with me just telling them that the gov't would be funding my entire edumacation! :)

It's Bri's couch anyway, I was just trying to pimp it out to anyone. :D

Check how dumb this is...

The school calls me yesterday and tells me that I forgot to check what my citizenship is on my FAFSA form. Im like, no way!!! So to remedy the situation , I now have to find my birth certificate and send to them so they can hopefully change it "internaly". But if they cannot then they send me a form to fill out and I send it back. Once this is done then they can process my finaid..... What a nightmare.....

But hopefully this can get done this coming week to get the ball rolling on finding out how much im going to get.

I hope this will not delay the process to bad.

Its funny how the finaid department has had my FAFSA for monthes but they are finding this problem out now. Part of it is my fault however, but its just one more thing to have to worry about.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Chris

Yeah, and no sleeping naked on it... you'll stick

bump da bump bump

Casey and I got into Cedar Key!! We are really excited. She will be down July 10th and I will be down at the end of July. Plus my thesis is almost done!!

Barb- CONGRATULATIONS!!! Casey- you too!

I'm so happy for you guys! Welcome neighbors!

That must be a huge sigh of relief! :D

p.s. I'm on the chat, but no one's around... if you're online, please stop by! :)

Biz-ump!!

Dang people, where y'all at (I'm a Yankee, really I am...) ? :D

Has anyone else got fin aid other than Kev and Chris??? My mailman keeps letting me down. Waz up with that work study stuff? That just doesn't sound right (I thought only undergrads were eligble?)... oh well

 please mr postman send me a letter...make it a big fat fin aid envelope, please, ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
:p giggle

Its only a thin envelope Liz, sorry :( h I got an updated one with my signature loan on it today though. :p

Man Kevin, you're making me green with envy  You've gotten two things and I still have none. Thanks for the warning though...I probably would have ripped up the small thin envelope (ha ha). :p

Maybe I haven't gotten mine yet because they are deciding how much of a special "she seems like she needs it so we'll give her one" scholarship to award me. ha aha hahahahahahhaha :D

Okay, I think I've finally lost it!

I talked to Cindy, a FA counselor and she said they will be sending out some letters of award in about a week.... So, let's hope the rest of ours is in that batch....

Mike

I should be getting my letter today (yippie!) But my award is already posted on the Webstar site (hint hint for those of you still waiting). But I just want that stupid alt loan application so that I can fill it out and send it back already!

he he he, Kev, I almost fell out of my chair laughing when I read that! I LOVE Timmy!

Timmy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Hi.
I'm an M-2 at NSU. For those of you still looking for housing, Plantation is a great option. I lived at poinciana when I was an MBS student at NSU and moved after that year because of the $ I was paying for such a small apt. I now live in a one bedroom at Jacaranda Club Apts. A couple of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years live here. Its cheaper and bigger than those nxt to school. It takes 10 to 15 min to get to school in the morning.
For those looking to buy scrubs and dissection kits, you can buy them from SOSA (surgery club). They are the same if not cheaper than any place around here. The scrubs have a monogram with the surgery club's emblem and NSU on it. YOU WILL GET GOOD USE OF THESE SCRUBS especially your first semester. Feel free to email me if you have questions. Congratulations and good luck.
Janet

I'm pretty sure I posted this here... yet I'm not 100%...

For those still in need of housing arrangements, we created a website specifically to address those needs.
