NSUCOM Class of 2006!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just wanted to ask if anyone is looking into the DO fellowship program.

See you guys on July 29th

Hey,
I am pretty interested in the OMM fellowship at Nova, but I haven't had much time to look into it aside from the basics. I am thinking about trying to e-mail a fellow this week though.

Hey guys

Does anybody know about the MBA program.
Are they offering the program for the same tuition or do you have to pay per credit hour.

I would love to complete the MBA classes on the weekends while doing the OMM fellowship.

Have a great day

Does anyone know the exact dress code policy for class? Also, how are people going about searching for roommates? Thanks!!

I heard shirts and shoes were required...bummer.

I was down there a couple of weeks ago, and though it says no sandals (for girls anyway) plenty of girls were wearing dressy sandals (no flip-flops though) and capri pants, khakis, t-shirts (somewhat dressy but somewhat casual at the same time). There were also guys wearing scrub pants with regular t-shirts even though it's supposed to be a no-no.... officially we all signed the dress-code policy before we interviewed, so you should have the official word somewhere. Unofficially it's not as strict unless you need to talk to people in the administration offices.

That's what I've seen and heard! I'm definitely buying some sandals...although a word to the ladies- I was freezing indoors most of the time in Florida (restaurants, stores, etc...) because the a/c was blasting, so I'm scratching my idea of buying mostly tank tops because I'd freeze to death indoors! :D

Dress code for class is shirt and tie for dudes and nice clothes for the ladies...
OR
you can wear scrubs to class. Why anyone would want to dress up is beyond me. When you go to IGC you have to wear nice clothes though.

Hey future classmates! I will be in the class of 2006 with you and just wondering about housing. Anyone been looking into buying a condo? I'll be going to ft. laudy daudy this weekend (from st.pete,fl) to look for some condos and need to know what's decent. If anyone knows neighborhoods to stay away from let me know. I'd like something really close to school so I can avoid the traffic I keep hearing about. Also, just curious if anyone else from USF out there has been accepted to NSUCOM also?? Later doctors...

Docaholic,

You can find a link to the closest/nicest/newest condo's here...
<a href="http://www.nsucom2006.com/yabbse/index.php?board=16;action=display;threadid=24" target="_blank">http://www.nsucom2006.com/yabbse/index.php?board=16;action=display;threadid=24</a>

It also our class 2006' official website..
Look under the second post under the link above.... and you will find a link to the condos.....

Any ?'s, let me know..

Mike

I don't know if I'm going to be showing my ignorance here...but the rent in Ft. Lauderdale is pretty steep...I mean, even higher than Atlanta, which I thought was about the worst one could get. I'm getting a two bedroom for visitors--and the rent is enormous. Does anyone know if actually buying a house is plausible? Or would it be pretty dumb to use student aid for a house payment instead of rent? Any thoughts would be most appreciated.
By the way--I'm getting blown out on the 2006 website introductions...MAN!!  :p  :D

From what I have heard from some current students at Nova, it's not really worth buying a house unless you are sure that you are going to be staying there for a long time. I thought that the rent would be cheaper there too, but it's like half of what it is here in Boston. Hope things work out.
Barb

You guys think the rent is alot? I'd love to live where you are! For a two bedroom, I think $500 a month is reasonable, especially with washer/dryer, weight room, pool, etc...

I lived in Cleveland last year and I paid $500 for a one bedroom that almost had a bathroom (it was so small I don't think it counts). :)

I thought that the apartments were very reasonable, but if you want to live farther away from school, I'm sure they're cheaper.

Palcaregirl, where did you find a 2 bedroom apartment in Ft. Lauderdale for $500/mo?? That's a great deal. Or was that somewhere else and I'm off?
Mike, thanks for the advice on the condo, I appreciate your help. :) We'll check them out while we're there this weekend. I'll have to be looking at some others as well, them are kinda steep. I'll check with some classifieds while there.
Is anyone going to be living anywhere but Davie? Has anyone looked into Pembroke Pines, Sunrise, HOllywood, etc? Seems like I've read about people mostly going to live in Davie, but I've heard that those other places aren't too far away. Any comments on this?
Thanks
PS...advice: go to Wolfgang Pucks at Sawgrass Mills Mall and eat butternut squash soup. Yummy.

WOW! Boston must be a lot like CA in regards to real estate and the prices for apartments...but $1000/month seems high to spend on rent...it just seems like more of an investment to spend that money on something with equity--but thanks for the advice...I would really like to move to Orlando after the 1st two years...I believe somebody mentioned something about that being a legit possibility. Does anyone know more about that?

A major shock to me as I go from inherited (read PAID FOR) house to $980 a month rent for a small apartment!!! If only I could talk my parents into buying a yacht and lettimg me live on it down there for free...hehehe

Sorry, I meant $500 a month per person for a two bedroom...that still seems pretty reasonable to me, especially since it's across the street from the school! I'll buy that for a dollar for sure. Okay, gotta run, sorry I'm so lax on the posting lately, my two jobs have kept me extremely busy this week! :D

Are any of you guys awaiting word for a Navy HPSP? I was just told by my recruiter that I probably won't hear anything until June or May at the earliest. He said the Navy is holding off until more students get med school acceptances. Just wondering if any of my fellow NSU students were dealing with the same thing.

Oh yea, and BUMP again

While I'm not in on the whole military scholarship thing, I am getting a little scratchy about Fin.Aid. I want my moolah!
Moolah for Yoolah!

Has anyone called admissions to confirm that orientation has been moved back (as well as the start of classes)? Just wondering.

Oh yeah, BUMP!

Hey guys

I checked with Mary yesterday about when orientation would be. She said that it was indeed moved to August 5th-9th and that classes would begin the following week on August 12th. Hope this helps! Aight, take care everyone and congrats to any new aceptees!

Hey Novees. Just thought you all might be interested in any information on financial aid. I called the other day and the lady in the office said I should be getting an award letter soon. My FAFSA was filled out late Jan early Feb and they are in the process of verification for me now (which takes two-three weeks). So that's about the timeline. She said this month probably I should get stuff. Can't wait! Uh oh, late for an appointment. Later folks.

I heard the same about both topics...
--the dates of orientation have been moved up\
--financial aid info within the month/
--I used to have a Dukes of Hazard lunchbox/
ok, so the last part isn't important.

I used to have a Voltron luchbox if that means anything?  <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Showing my age a bit but ummmm....I had a six million dollar man lunch box

Speaking of smurfs...I had a smurfy smurf lunchbox. I also had My little Pony too. :)

I had a my little pony lunch box too! I had a care bears one too.
By the way, who is the 6 million dollar man?

Barb

The six-million dollar man...
hmmm.. he was this dude who was "rebuilt" to be like this cool guy, and they spent six-million bucks on him. He could jump real high (the bionic legs of course) and see cool things (the bionic eye) and every time he moved there were these awesome sound effects like "duh-nuh-nuh-nuh" etc. For those younger folks like us, he was like a cross between the Terminator and "Ross" from Friends.

Hey guys:

If I move down to Ft. Lauderdale in last weekend in July, do you think there will be plenty of apartment to rent or condos to buy that are close to campus.

Thanks

Have a great day

AK

Check this link for the scoop on the Six Million dollar Man and you will see why he was the Mac-Daddy of 1974!

<a href="http://web.ukonline.co.uk/craig.pierce2/video/six_open.rm" target="_blank">Six Million Dollar Man</a>

DocAdamK,
You will probably want to get on a waiting list, i.e. send in your application and deposits...but they'll let you in. I've reserved a place and I won't move in until the very end of July. Hope that helps.

Hey, I remember the six million dollar man! But he didn't have anything on my lunchbox, I graduated from the muppets pigs in space to....WONDER WOMAN! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

For all those seeking apartments...the general (obvious I guess) trend seems to be that the very close apartments like Cedar Key and Sunforest are impossible to get towards the back end of summer. I know my place, Garden's of Nova, which is 2 minutes farther than either of these places, is already being whittled down to a few spots.

Anyways, got all my financial aid stuff done now that I have more free time. Anyone get awarded yet or have a round figure for what you get for off-campus living?

Bleh, trying to find jobs this late is hard....I hope I find one or else I'm going to turn into a quivery mass of bored/poor out of his mind/watched too much tv/ate too much McDonald's over the summer goo. <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" /> Hehe..ok, maybe not that bad. Anyways, peace for now!

Nema

Hey Vash:

Don't atrophy yet.
But I know its tough finding a job just for 2-3months. I lot of places want you the entire summer.

Good LUck\

AK

Man, the only job I found so far is working in a doctor's office. Who the hell would want to do THAT!!!! Hehe. <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

You feel less guilty about walking out on a temp agency....just a thought

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...... <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Hey all! (again! I accidentally started a new topic on the main osteo page -- can I plead ignorance?)

My name's Andrew, I'm an M1 who lives close to school and is looking to rent out 2 rooms. The condo association is called University Village and is between Cedar Key and Poinciana. Don't know if this is appropriate or helpful, if not I apologize (also a long post :).

It's a two story place, the rent is $525/month (includes cable and a monthly maid service) and the bedrooms are decent sized (one is smaller than the other though). The upstairs is all bedrooms, the downstairs has a kitchen, with a study room on one end (leading out to a patio and the washer & dryer) and the living dining room on the other (there's a credenza and four person table near the kitchen, near the other patio is the entertainment area.

Each bedroom has a balcony (big enough for at least a couple of chairs, mine has 2 chairs and a table) but the other two people will have to share 1.5 bathrooms (essentially share a shower). If you're interested, please email me at [email protected]. Thanks and best of luck this next year! Oh, the walk to school is less than 10 minutes, door to sitting my butt down in class... (if that helps? :)

Andrew Nye
P.S. I was in you guys' position last year, Cedar Key was full by the time I visited Davie, but Poinciana is nice and new (I'd live there if my folks and I hadn't gotten lucky and bought this condo). I wasn't impressed by Sun Forest...
P.P.S. Sorry, but no pets.
Last PPPS - Anyone interested in finding out about the joys of condo buying is also welcome to contact me, but the essence of it is I think I got lucky...

Well that's the jillionth negative thing I've heard about sunforest. They even have <a href="http://www.sunforestsucks.com" target="_blank">www.sunforestsucks.com</a> hehe. Unfortunately forme though...I have two good sized dogs and I need a place close by that will take them. Maybe After I've been there for a semester I will have scoped out some other places or bought a small house somewhere with a fenced yard. :(

Hey maybe sunforest will give me a couple of months free rent if I paint the outside for them.

BTW syrinax, They gave me an address for the apartment of 2551 SW 71st terrace apt 3?? something or other...Is that near the school? It says Plantation Fl...I thought the school was in Davie.

Hey Kevin, don't worry, it'll be okay (your dogs probably won't mind the scenery, although your wife might- she can just move into Cedar Key with Brian and I- ha ha). :D

But seriously, Sunforest can't be that bad or it people wouldn't live there. I heard that it's much nicer inside than out. And besides- you already have an apartment? Those of us waiting on Cedar Key still haven't heard ANYTHING yet and they're saying that it's goign to be another month! Consider yourself lucky to have a place to live....

Okay, did that cheer you up any? If not, i'll go tag-sale-ing and find you a million dollar man lunch box to bring to school. :D :D

I looked at a map (mmmm...Free time...:) and it doesn't look like too far of a drive (certainly less than 15 minutes) but I'd watch out for traffic (University Dr. is just awful during peak times). Nova is kinda on the edge of Davie (on the map, it shows the campus on the opposite side of where the health sciences college is-- ie, close to the town center).
From the look on the map, you should have to spend very little time on Univ. Drive... :( I'm not personally familiar with that appt complex, sorry!
Hope this helped a little!
Andrew

Hey PCG, since I'm the one with an address...looks like you two might be living with US <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

thx syrinax

I went to look at Sunforest and it was really nice inside. They said that they were going to be painting the outside this summer so all in all I think that it's a nice place to live.
I will be living hopefully at Cedar Key, but if not, then Poinciana.
Cant wait!

Did you guys see the new post,
NOVA Class of 2005 RULES!

As if...(insert hair toss)...everybody knows that our class will be the cooler than the other side of the pillow.

I DEFINITELY AGREE.
BY THE WAY, SHIBBY, WHAT'S UP WITH THE NEW PIC ON THE WEBSITE. I KIND OF LIKE THE ORIGINAL

The only thing about Sunforest is that you have alot of cars running through that road that connects College Blvd. and University. Alot of people from apt. complexes on College use it as a short cut ( I will be one of those such people :D ).

I just tried a hair toss and it gave me nausea...guess I should try it with longer hair huh???? :p

True, a lot of people do use that road in the middle of SunForest as a shortcut, but who cares. Its not like its backed up in the morning. Pretty much any apartment in SF is within walking distance...

My fiancee' lived there for a year when she was at NSU... she liked it, but her only gripe was that maintenance took forever. And after reading sunforestsucks.com, she's not the only one.

That was one thing I really liked about Cedar Key... you had maintenance the next day. Great service. My apartment is actually going up for rent... in, July 1st... so one of you guys will hopefully get it (its one of the closest ones). its been in a long tradition of NSU-COMers... From the class of 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and hopefully 2006.

Oh, whenever you guys get a chance, you MUST go to the Falcon Pub, right across teh street from Cedar Key. They have the BEST chicken fingers. No lie. 10/10. No other chicken fingers come close. The great thing about the Falcon Pub is when its 2 AM you can pretty much crawl across University Dr to your apt.
