Thanks guys for your advice...but I'm going to ask my boss if I can work part-time starting in mid-June or else I'm just going to quit. I may/may not move back home with my Mom for that month which would save me a little money. But all in all, I am absolutely miserable at work. Its not that my job is difficult, but I have been out of work since MONDAY and have been checking my e-mail (which is where EVERYONE has to request a report from me) everyday via our remote desktop program, and do you now what? For the entire week, I have had TWO report requests. Each report will take me 10-15 min to complete. There is no reason why I can't a) work from home, or b) work part time. Even if I could work Mondays, Wed, and Fridays, it would make a HUUUUGE difference.

Anyway, we just wrapped up our trial today so I go back to work tomorrow. I think I'm gonna tell my boss tomorrow or Monday.

good for you... i'm teaching now and it takes every ounce of energy to get myself up at 5 am and face my 14, 15, 16-year-old "too cool for school" high school students- i tell you what, disciplining, motivating, etc. them for their last three weeks of school is exhausting and i think if i didn't know i was going to be done soon, no amount of money would be keeping me there (can somebody PLEASE remind me how we were equally anxious for summer to come? i'm completely losing my youthful outlook on life! eek! ). and you know what? when i finally told my boss i was going to med school, (and boy was i terrified to tell her!), i was most surprised by her reaction- she was incredibly supportive and proud... and i think your boss will probably have the same reaction and will understand your need for some down time. point being, get the part-time and ENJOY yourself b4 school. after all, haven't you earned a little down time so you get to miami feeling refreshed and happy!?

No prob man. Glad you know now so you didn't lose your spot...that would definitely suck.

I was under the impression that we didn't have to send in a deposit to hold our spot for entering class of 2006 at UM.....food for thought though, I'll give them a call in the morning

Just kidding. :D

whoops... missed that part of the post-- thought he was trying to decide bw location of UF vs USF.

One problem...wouldn't this cut off your benefits like health insurance? As far as I know, most work places don't give any benefits to part-time workers (Walmart abuses this to a ridiculous degree). Is there a way you can get onto your mom's insurance, or would you just pay out of pocket for coverage?

Yeah--that's the only issue. I'm going to take care of all of my dr's appts this month and next, and then be w/o insurance for 4 weeks (or maybe start my independent insurance a month early).

I think I've decided on June 23 being my last day. That leaves me with 40 more work days...some of which will be "sick days" *cough cough*. That gives me 4 weeks before I move down to Miami.

Hell. Yeah.

Nah I think he was talking about Miami partial scholarship vs. USF. But I think Dr.Mike would probably go to UF if he gets in for the reasons you stated above.

Just reread his post. It was about UF vs. USF sort of, but not really because he mentioned that he didn't think he'd get into UF off of waitlist. Sorry for any confusion. But moving on......

Hey, there is another "hideous women in medical school" thread today. These things are starting to get ridiculous. Have any of these guys ever seen what they look like?

Here's to Florida.

I saw that. Apparently, dopaminesurge missed my post in the magic wand thread about how girls repeatedly posting their picture just to get guys to drool over them gets old really fast. But to each her own, I guess.

Seriously, there's beautiful people and ugly people both externally and internally in every field.

Are you referring to my "cocky" comment?....I really wanted to tell that girl about herself, I mean seriously, posting your pictures all over SDN, applying to only 5 schools...then not getting in, I guess she needs the confidence boost after not getting accepted to med school this year! Seriously, if she were "soooo pretty" then wouldn't she have guys drooling over her in everyday life and not have to resort to the computer?

Disclaimer: That's not to offend anyone who didn't get in, just to offend people who didn't get in and in order to maintain their ego, has to post pictures of themselves all over SDN.

Thank you!!! My interviewer notified me- the letters should be sent out soon.

I just got my UF alternate letter today and it was postmarked yesterday so the letters are out.

The whole thing is one big insecurity-fest. A bunch of guys who have most likely never even been near a girl claiming they want dumb hot chicks as girlfriends... great. Get some self-esteem. But the girls are just as good-- trying to convince those same guys they are both hot and smart? I don't know... if a guy needs convincing to try dating hot, smart women.. perhaps you are hot and smart enough to know not to try?

Just got my letter... i have been regretfully informed that I am not accepted into the UFCOM class of 2010... makes my decision easier :)

I completely agree caveman....I also think that people should date outside or their field of interest, it will be much easier to deal with when you get accepted and your sig. other doesn't...or even when you get accepted to schools in different parts of the country....or match into residencies across the country from one another. It will also just make you more interesting, don't let your ENTIRE life be "medicine"....date someone that likes to do something different! Well, that's my 2 cents for those people who can't find "hot girls in medicine."

Exactly. You could date a supermodel, or a porn star, or Miss America... pretty much I assume that if you're a guy and a medical student, the world is your oyster.

i'm kinda worried about safety in the jackson area and miami and i dont really know how things are there

is it common for people to get mugged in these areas? is car theft and damage common? do these sorts of things also happen in the daytime?

I'm from Miami and I can honestly tell you that car theft is not a significant problem. What I can tell you though is that criminals in the Jackson area like to assault cars when occupied by drivers. In a way I understand them, It would be kind of disapointing if you are planning a car break in and there is no one inside. I recomend you to drive as fast as you can through the neiborhood and try and take all the red lights (obeying them would mean they would have a chance to get close to your side window). This is specially true when driving in the early morning hours. So, as long as you are in a disposition to perform the car stunts featured in movies like Mission Impossible and Die Hard...you will be fine.
Hope it helps...

are you serious about these last set of comments?

I am so happy to be going to UF in the fall guys. I just want to throw that out there. I have been celebrating for the past few days!!

Daylight hours are generally safe, just stay aware of your surroundings. During the day the core of the campus (quadrangle behind rosenstiel, around lois pope building, etc.) is very safe. Around the periphery of campus you should keep your eyes peeled (around the metrorail station, around the hospital itself, ryder trauma, etc.). If you carry a purse or laptop bag keep it close. After dusk, the whole thing changes. It's pretty ugly, especially the further north you go from the research buildings. I suggest a can of pepper spray for those days you are planning on leaving the campus late, especially if you are taking the metro back south (or God forbid north, those handful of stops in liberty city could leave you crapping your pants - not a fun experience).

Congrats Turquoisey!

I'll be withdrawing my spot from UF either tomorrow or the day after...so that will free a spot for someone else who wants to be a gator doc. next year. Good luck to all.

nice ride hurricane and thanks for the info...do you think one should always call the escort service during the nighttime when he/she wants to go back to the parking lot?

my roomate just got placed on the alternate list today they told him its not ranked. is the highest waitlist? is there a high priority alternate list? also do a lot of kids get off this list? should he write a letter expressing his interest? any info would be appreciated, thanks a lot

Before I go to sleep, I figured I would BUMP.

Come on guys, we were on page 3...I accept no less than bottom of page 1.

Runner, anything from USF, or have you fully decided on UM? I think I'm going down to Miami memorial day to find a place to live, will be there for a few days (and will thus have to spend my bday in Miami by myself!!!....yuck!)

Mc...I decided a few weeks back that regardless of the outcome with USF, I'll attend Miami. While I really liked USF, I prefer Miami despite the higher tuition. It sure would be nice though if Miami sent some scholarship funds my way

I'm stuck on figuring out where to live. I wish I could decide on a campus. I put myself on the WL to go BACK to the Miami campus...but I don't know for sure if I really want to go there.

How's your job going Mc? I only have 36.5 more work days left--I'm so stoked! Oh and get this, ya know how on outlook/email you have a "signature" that goes at the end of your letter? Generally something like:

Thank you,

RunnerMD
Company
Phone Number
EMail

Well, I changed my signature yesterday to include a "countdown till I quit." So when I send an email it says,

Thank you,

Runner MD
**36 days till I quit work!**
Company
Phone Number
Email

Very professional, huh?

You should call up Unfrozencaveman and Hurricane95 and Yodri and get them to partyyyyyyyy it up with you Red Tide fashion. :p :D ;)

So..is it definitely ok to call up and cancel another acceptance. A med school cant revoke a decision right?? haha. I am so nervous to get rid of my other school!!

Its definitely ok. The only way a medical school revokes an acceptance is if you've done something stupid and lie on your application about something or fail your classes this semester with a F or D.

I'm sure you are fine. No need to be neurotic anymore, for now at least until medical school starts.

Where else were you accepted anyways??? Just curious. Congrats on both acceptances.

Runner, I'm so excited for you!! About the campuses, I've requested to transfer to Miami, but if I weren't attached to something, I would PROBABLY choose Boca...though I tend to do MUCH better in larger classes for some reason (I know, it's strange). But then, I'd love to be your classmate in Miami!! Anyways, work is ok, everyone that I'm close to is quitting because of my ex-boss and his jacka** attitude, he doesn't know how to respect another human being, especially a female...it sucks! BUT...only 16 more days until my wedding and only 8 more weeks of work. I also picked up a second job at Abercrombie to be in a more positive work environment and to also give me something to do while my soon-to-be-husband is away, and also because my best friend in the lab is leaving and moving to Alabama because of my ex-boss...I usually hang out with her almost everyday, so with her and Nick gone, I'm going to be very lonely and bored!! I'm so excited about school, I can't wait to start...I'm nervous also, I know it's going to be difficult and overwhelming...I just hope I can adjust well. Good luck in deciding between campuses!! :)

I think I would kill myself after 2 straight days of having to listen to that awful techno music they always play.

*Thump* *Thump* *Thump*
I can see, I am free! With you, I want to be!
*Thump* *Thump* *Thump*
You and me! In a tree! Baby!
*Thump* *Thump* *Thump*

Okay maybe not kill, but definitely ram my head into a wall. repeatedly.

If that's the only thing I have to worry about...that's a BIG step up from Mayo!!! (where I work). Here, I have to worry about a little asian running around screaming at each other because he has been in science for 40 years and still doesn't have his own lab so he needs an ego boost and in order to do so he has to make everyone else in the lab/world feel smaller than himself. Not to mention the major sexual harrassment from the PI's HUSBAND (who is a dirty dirty old man...it's so gross!)....he's had about 10 charges against him and remains working in the lab unaffected, not to mention it's against Mayo's policies to even have a couple working in the same facility and we have TWO!!! So really, between the screaming arguements everyday and the sexual harrassment, I'd MUCH rather have the awful non-sense techno music, though I AM worried about being the oldest person there at the ripe age of 22. I'm not even taking the job for the money, I'm seriously taking it because I need something a little more positive in my life than MAYO!!...excuse the rant.

I'm trying to decide between UM and USF... It just doesnt feel right to withdraw from UM, especially after the partial tution scholarship...

What do you all know about the clinical experience at USF? Thats really the main thing pulling me toward UM... I have heard that they offer lots and lots of clinical experience... any comments?

My understanding is both are on equal ground and have equally good clinical opportunities. The only thing about Miami that you might find an advantage is that you won't have to travel far to get to the hospital since it is closeby the main campus of the medical school.

USF First years start with a preceptorship and clinical longitudinal experience course from year one where they get assigned a preceptor to work with. They also have a course they take where they learn to take histories and do that sort of stuff from year one right away.

The longitudinal experience course will allow you to go to one of many different kinds of facilities, whether it is rural clinics in ruskin, working with treating migrant workers, or whether it is somewhere like Tampa General Hospital, etc.

I believe, but don't quote me on this, that this part of the curricula continues into year 2 as well. REL would need to respond to this since he's the expert.

There are good sides and bad sides to USF. The good thing is there is an abundant diversity of clinical facilities. There is Tampa General Hospital which is a typical teaching hospital with a trauma 1 level emergency center and various other really good program. There is the USF medical center at 17 Davis right next door. This is mainly pediatrics, neonatology, and a few derm and other fields. Then they have the main USF medical clinic on campus. Beyond that they send students to outreach clinics in places like Ruskin as well as have the USF Health Park outreach clinics on Busch Blvd as well. Other facilities include the busiest VA hospital in the nation right across from campus (James A Haley) as well as the BayPines VA hospital. Then there's the only Shriners in Florida and also All Children's Hospital in St. Pete. Oh almost forgot, there's Moffitt and the Eye clinic on campus. There's also FMHI as well for mental health. Moffitt happens to be one of the only comprehensive cancer institutes in Florida.

There are other facilities too. So you'll get a great diversity of clinical experience by going to USF. The only draw back is that most of the sites are off the campus and at opposite ends of town. This is why someone commented on your page about it being called suitcase city. But that can have its advantages too because you'll get to experience different types of medical facilities and the way they do things and the different population types there.

For instance, going to a hospital that is all pediatric related only would have a much different feel from a VA hospital that is all mostly retired veterans with a few active duty people thrown in.

And going to a VA would be different then what you'd expect at the typical teaching hospital like the TGH where there are both children wards and adult wards.

So you can see what I'm getting at. Oh and REL always says Tampa is 5th most diverse city in the nation, so I think that can be a plus too.

I'd PM him or see if he would be willing to comment on here more about the curricula and clinical experiences.

FYI to anyone who cares: UM has updated their Incoming Freshman page on the web...it gives useful advice for fin. aid. as well as deadlines for paperwork (ie. residency paperwork, etc)....anyways, just thought I'd pass on the info. If you need the link (I know some of you don't find things well...like parking info...) it's http://www.mededu.miami.edu/Admissions :)

There. I did it. I withdrew my acceptance from UF med. I wonder why that was so hard to do...

Oh well anyhow, that's it. I am now officially 100% a hurricane for the next four years, instead of the 99% hurricane status I previously had as a result of simultaneously holding an acceptance to UF as well. Whew.

Now off to finish my senior project in time to present....one more week and its all over.

Bump, bump it up, come on and bump it!

Well guys, May 15th is around the corner.. I sadly must inform all my schools that I will be renouncing a career in medicine, and I will inturn join an 80's cover band (synthesizer keyboard if you must know). We will tour Germany (They love anything) playing covers from FLock of Seagulls.

Screw medicine.
