ERAS 2017-2018 Cardiology Fellowship Application Cycle

Rejection from cooper today.

Question:
A program emailed me to say they apologize but have to reschedule my interview day. 8 days from my previously plan date. All accommodations and travel turned out to be non-refundable. Do I tell them they screwed me over and ask for a refund. I feel that this will likely negatively impact my application and if they don't compensate me I'll end up losing either way. Thoughts anyone?

That really sucks. Unfortunately, I feel that there's nothing you can do here- it's highly unlikely that they are going to compensate you, and bringing up a refund would negatively impact your application (in my opinion). You might have a good chance getting a refund with calling and explaining the situation to at least the hotel if it's a university hotel.

I wont bring it up to them now, since it will negatively affect you. I would bring it up during the interview day saying that you are so committed to the program that you had to rebook everything since the flights and the hotel were non refundable. That will sound better and they may offer you a compensation or so , or a higher ranking on their list :)

Your probably right!. I guess I pretty much already knew the answer to my question. Still feels good to vent on SDN. Thanks for listening lol

Thanks! great advice, I may bring it up casually on the day of the interview.

I wouldn't bring it up on interview day either. I would only talk about if asked and would play it off as if it's cool and no worries. Otherwise if you do bring it up on your own or casually as you've mentioned, they may think you're too fixated on getting refund and it might give them mixed messages rather than focusing on still attending that interview and being your best. **** happens unfortunately and I'm sorry to hear that they have notified you this late. But in the end they didn't cancel your interview. I heard stories when I applied for residency that one guy was told they he was invited by error after he had already arranged the hotel and everything. Best of luck mate!

So..How many AMGs are reading this with no/few invites? My Significant Other is applying (I'm also a resident, but not applying). He has good research projects/pubs, good extracurriculars, good letters, good scores, good med school, good university-affiliated IM program-just an all-around good applicant who is well liked in his program (*I think he is better than just good, but I do have a bias, so I will be conservative :)). His academic advisor said he would probably get 15 interviews and could pick 8 or so to actually go on. He has two interviews, six rejections, and a waitlist on a 'safety program' he almost didn't apply for. At the end of August. Applied to 30+ across the country, good university-affiliated programs. This feels like a DEFCON1 disaster.

It definitely seems to be a much more competitive year than previous ones and that might explain why everyone is getting fewer invites whether you're AMG or IMG. Though i do feel like maybe 30% of programs may still be reviewing applications and have yet to send out invites (i.e. UAB, Arkansas, NY, and smaller university tier/community programs). I know that my in house program doesn't start reviewing apps until September. All we can do is wait and hope to hear something positive. Tell him to hang in there, we are all in the same boat.

I am literally in the same position as your significant other. I'm an AMG and was told by a research advisor at one of the Harvard programs that I had a competitive application and would be competitive at many of the top programs. I haven't gotten any invites from the top programs, only rejections from those top programs. Don't know what's happening this cycle.

When do you guys/gals think interview invites will be definitely done for IMGs? Based on last year it seems like IMGs were getting invites up until end of September?

If this is any consolation for those on the forum who are dejected with what is happening this year:

IMG
No visa requirements
Scores: 260 +
Basic science research +, but not published
18 publications, 10 of which are pubmed indexed.
11 presentations including AHA
First place for poster presentation in multiple forums excluding AHA
Top of the class in med school and outstanding resident in the current class in residency.
Strong LORs
Applied to 100 programs, got positive responses from only 2 so far :)

Trying to stay positive and remain calm. I hope things get better for all of us. Good luck and God bless.

Another quiet week in the midst of what should be the peak of this cycle. In the last 2.5 weeks I've gotten 1 interview.

Are the well regarded university based programs giving all the interviews to the same group of applicants?

This cycle has been really depressing for the IMG applicants so far. Not sure what to expect further. Just a few interviews so far...

Adding - not mine
Nothing new, just new activity on programs that have already done invites/rejections
