Let's do an exercise to see where we stand (for mutual benefit of everyone. Peers can see where they stand and be prepared. Ppl who haven't received ivs, plz contribute too. All your inputs count.

Pick one of options for questions one and two. Question 3 is jus descriptive

1. AMG/IMG VISA/IMG NO VISA
2. UNIVERSITY/UNIV AFFILIATED/COMMUNITY
3. NUMBER OF IVs

AMG, university, 3 (all what I would deem a safety application)
Applied to 30, added 5 more when 1 week in
Completely blown away
Told I was a strong applicant,
Been rejected by 3/4 of my programs
Never even entered my mind that there would be a possibility I wouldn't match

AMG, university-based, 7 invites (all lower tier and safeties), applied to 38 programs. Been getting mostly rejections. Was realistically expecting a few top tier programs but got none. Was told I would be competitive at top programs by multiple cardiologists.

AMG, university, 15 (applied to 45). Many low-mid tier university programs with a few "reaches." Cancelling/not scheduling a few since there are 3-4 more I'm waiting to hear from.

AMG. Stronger university program. Applied to 41 based on not much research, 20 IV from mid to upper tier places, seven rejections. Will interview at ~10

Been watching this but hadn't posted - nothing to add that anyone else hadn't. I would call this process very disappointing. I am an AMG at a university program in a major city. I applied to 50 programs because of average step scores, everything else solid. Expected invites from all the big university programs and have gotten almost pure rejections. I am sitting at four right now:two at programs affiliated with my home program, one from a big university program, one from a reach. I don't know what I did wrong.

Best of luck to all.

As noted before re my Significant Other and it remains the same:
AMG, 30+ apps (did NOT apply to the superstar contingent like Mayo, CC, MGH), two interviews and a waitlist. I should say one interview, because one of them is at a program he says he would not rank (had to apply for family pressure reasons)

Applied to ~80, got interviews in 9 mostly low-mid tier.

Any IMG heard from University of Minnesota. Did they send the interviews yet ?

Wow this is all eye opening, I don't think anyone realized how competitive this cycle would be. Too late for us but this info will help applicants next year to be better prepared. Keep the contributions coming!

For the applicants that have >12 invites what do you think has made the difference? Your resident program reputation? Your residency performance? Your scores? Publications? Multiple degrees? Connections? Letters?

There is a nice link on NRMP website with fellowship program director survey about what they look for in applicants. The number of PDs that participated is rather small (45 or so) but the big things they look at are:

1. Reputation of your IM program
2. Interest in their fellowship specifically and why
3. Letters
4. Research/publications/posters
5. Scores

Yeah I've seen that survey just wanted to hear from actual top applicants what they thought made the difference--would be nice to get their perspective as well for future applicants.

IMG requiring visa, mid tier program, minimal research
Scores 260+
Applied to 80+
11 invites

AMG, mid tier univ program
Scores 240+
4 manuscripts (2 cards), 2 posters, one oral presentation at international confernce. Strong LORs.
Applied to about 40 originally, added 8 more in a panic a few weeks later. Have 5 interviews, 2 from safeties. 3 others from medium to strong uni programs. Lots of rejections.

Interestingly, I've been rejected from programs that people from my program matched last year with similar or worse apps. So goes along with the theme of this year being competetive. Sucks :(

Any Texans here?
Hope you are making it through okay!

AMG, mid-tier Uni program. 38 applications, 8 interviews at good not stellar places, 9 rejections.
Stats: step 1 240+
No AOA
1 abstract presented at National meeting, 1 abstract at local meeting, 1 paper in submission
My letters are probably the same as everyone's letters
I do have a really quality picture though so that's probably how I got most of my interviews.
Tough year, but we gon get through this fam

IMG without visa requirement
University program
Applied to 38 programs, received 17 invites, planning to attend 15

AMG, mid-tier university program, steps high-240s, 3 national meeting abstracts, 5 local meetings, 2 journal pubs, several others submitted.
Applied to 45 programs, mostly northeast
18 interview invites (4 community, 14 university), 7 rejections
Really didn't get any of my "reach" programs (Pitt, Hopkins, Duke, CC, MGH, Penn) that I was hoping but certainly I'm grateful for the interviews I have.

Tough year. IMG no visa requirement. Pretty Good scores. Great letters. Mid Tier University Program Residency. 15 pubmed indexed publications (12 first author), Plenty of abstracts as well at ACC,AHA, SCAI including oral presentations, few more online publications. Applied to 100+. Have gotten 9 IVs. 5 from Mid to upper tier University (I will be happy in any of the 5), 3 university safeties and one community. Have gone to 2 interviews till now where interviewers feels overwhelmed by my research, however, still no interviews at upper tier programs. Honestly, I really feel that residency program pretty much is the most important factor for cardiology fellowship (may not be as important for other subspecialties) and IMG/AMG is the second deciding factor. In fact, upper tier strictly calls from upper tier residency programs unless very strong well renowned contact.

AMG
Mid-tier university program
10 interviews (2 community, rest low to mid university), 10 rejections, applied 60+
no pubs, many abstracts/posters but not at cardiology conferences

I hope and pray that today and this week will be showered with interviews for all of us :)

What are some of the major programs that have not sent out invitations?

All top tier programs have sent out invites except Brigham and Women, UPenn and NYU per the list on SDN.

I had IV from Brigham 2 weeks ago (8/14). I have not heard from UPenn or NYU.

It seems like it's only rejections these days. I'm hopeful that less Interviews will save me travel and money and I'll match at my first choice program any way :)
