Are W-2 physicians being suckered?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I beg pardon if linked you in with some of the other liberals on this forum regarding free speech.

I know for a fact that SSdoc, Ductape, and even Agast have made posts arguing against free speech (unsurprisingly, speech that goes against their beliefs automatically becomes hate speech).
Be honest, you just named whomever you could think of that isn’t conservative ;)

Ayn Rand was a SS/Medicare beneficiary later in her life -- I wonder if she would have referred to herself as a "taker" back then or if she felt like she "earned it."
Why?

Why invoke that name right now?

For the love of god..... why?

Lies, you mean?

Again, there was and always have been limits on free speech.

You want to stand behind infowars and the big lie bc you think we cant walk and chew gum at the same time. There can still be free speech with reasonable limitations. See the SDN terms of service, for example

Both are definitely left-wing ideologies with the main idea of fair distribution of wealth. Communism seeks to eliminate financial class by eliminating private ownership of property and industry and redistributes wealth based to citizens. This is done so through a totalitarian government. Socialism, in it's original form, still allows for private ownership of personal property but not of industry -- this is controlled by a central government ran by elected officials and profits are distributed to either society(government owns the means of production) as a whole or to the workers(co-operative ownership).

Within modern socialist movements(i.e. Democratic Socialism), Capitalist ideology may or may not co-exist. Some modern socialists advocate for centralized industry while others still advocate for private ownership with more control given to workers rather than being concentrated at the top, primarily through unionization. Most Democratic Socialists advocate for a broadened social safety net through universal healthcare and accessible high quality education(de-industrialization of essential services as determined through a Democratic process).

If you are interested in learning more, there's a documentary called "The Big Scary 'S' Word" on Hulu. It is obviously biased, however; it does discuss some of the historical differences and how many of the institutions we have in America, such as the Republican Party, are based around Socialist movements.
It seems to me that politicians (and others) take whatever term is most palatable and use that, regardless of the original meaning of the words. The former USSR - was it actually socialist or communist? The DPRK? Everyone is using the "socialist" label because it's politically more appealing.

My point is, while I appreciate your efforts to describe the finer points of distinction between these terms, I'm not sure it matters outside of academic political science history.

Do you STILL think Trump committed multiple felonies - as told by the mass media? And if so, do you think our system of government is so completely broken that he will never be arrested and put on trial for these?

Or... do you think you consumed misinformation?

No one ever said anyone has to "be cool" with everything posted on Twitter. Will he tolerate it, yes, absolutely. That's the difference. Lefties do NOT tolerate it. They use whatever means available to stifle and shut it down. Musk will NOT do this.

actually no. And please remember that the majority of americans including myself are Independent (aka the sensible center), so not being a democrat doesn't automatically make one a conservative.

a while ago doctodd was put on probation by SDN and sommeriver was banned for different statements that were clearly protected free speech.

I was upset at the lack of free speech protection on an internet "discussion" board, and expressed that concern. Ducttape and SSdoc posted basically that they don't believe in free speech unless it is part of the democratic party platform, which is what I expected from them.
You supported limiting free speech, though more rationally that those two.

I didn't want to lump you in with Ducttape and ssdoc, as I have always enjoyed your witty posts, and you are more selfless in patient care than many of us on this board.
However, I was disappointed by what you posted in that thread as free speech is sadly becoming less and less important to democrats.

you like to say that anything with which you disagree is a lie instead of presenting a reasoned argument. You are proving the point I made earlier.

As I posted a few months ago, I have a degree in Russian history and literature, speak Russian fluently, and lived in Moscow for six months in the mid 90s. I understand communism far better than you ever will.
This is why I am adamently opposed to socialism, which not exactly the same as communism which you described fairly well in post #240. However, socialism is closer to communism than any other major political theory theory which is why I compared how progressives aka socialists aka communists, more fervently suppress free speech than moderate democrats.

The further someone drifts along the political spectrum to the extremes, the less tolerance they have for truly fair and equal political discourse, i.e. free speech. Such extremists can't win political debates on facts or merit so they turn to suppression of free speech.

This also happens with people on the extreme right.

If you. Ductape, and SSdoc, etc, can't support free speech, then you are much further to the left than you might think or care to admit, and likely are in truth...... a socialist/communist, and not a reasonable left of center liberal.
Per usual, you didn't read or comprehend what I wrote, because it didn't fit your echo chamber.
I clearly stated that only individuals on the extreme left and right suppress free speech because they can't defend their ideas in an open and thorough debate. I included the far right in that statement because it is also true. I have said many times on SDN that I am an independent, and so clearly I don't believe in the nonsense of infowars/Jan 6th idiots.

I put the important parts in bold for the sake of your reading comprehension. If either of you can't defend the absolute foundation of our country (free speech), then going forward I will refer to you both as Socialist or Comrade SSdoc, Ductape.

SommeRiver got banned during the Capitol riot discussion, my understanding was it had to do with his support of violent consequences towards the rioters and that apparently is a violation of TOS, but if I recall correctly most of the heated arguments he had over that was with your free speech crowd. Maybe you should ask which one of them hit the report button? If Doctodd puts his foot in his mouth that’s his own business. I’m sure he was crying on his sailboat. I don’t report anyone because it simply does not matter that much to me. However, I have been reported myself so I guess I have some “street cred.” My approach to free speech is pragmatic. It’s an illusion and only exists for people who are untouchable. Every step of your life you have had to be mindful of how you talk to other people and present yourself to get to where you are. Don’t piss off your interviewer. Don’t insult your girlfriend’s friends. When you make the choice that getting along with people is not important, it’s not shocking when they reject you. The protection of free speech that we have is no one’s going to throw you out a window or chop you into little pieces for speaking out or writing the truth. I really doubt the Founding Fathers meant everyone should shoot their mouth off when they wrote the first amendment. I mean, they lived in an era where if someone insulted you, you squared off at noon and literally shot at each other**. If that’s not getting canceled I don’t know what is.

**It’s a good thing we don’t do that here because the worst offenders are probably the best shots

Well thought out as always. Agree that we have to moderate our expressed thoughts in occupational and some social situations.

I’m definitely not saying it’s good to be an ass.

However, we absolutely need free speech in political thought and regarding our personal and societal freedoms.

Your last point regarding good shots is funny.

Ah, the movie was good but the book is incredible. Anyways, one of the central themes of the series is "beware of heroes."
He had a couple other books in which there was a Bureau of Sabotage, whose job it was to prevent despotism by preventing the wheels of government from turning too smoothly.
Also had a great quote about the meaning of equality:
“All sentient beings are created unequal. The best society provides each with equal opportunity to float at his own level.”

I lost two dear friends to combat in Iraq, one of whom had been my roommate. When I first heard about and then saw videos of Westboro Baptist Church picketing funerals, I was saddened and hurt.

I had to consider where I stood on that issue and after doing a little soul searching I realized I wasn't mad at their right to do it.

They DEFINITELY have the right to picket funerals and say outlandish and hurtful BS, and my two guys who were killed would both say the same thing. They would defend the WBC's right to be awful.

As I've said a few times in this thread, the suppression of speech currently slants one direction. For the sake of my liberal friends, I hope this doesn't go the other way once the balance of power flips. Surely everyone has read enough history to see these things do in fact flip back and forth over time. Yall like it today, but you'll hate it tomorrow.

Mitch, it already exists. Wasn’t earlier in this thread or maybe another recent one, that people were high-fiving DeSantis for sticking it to Disney after they opened their mouth and gave an opinion on Don’t Say Gay? And it was a specially crafted bill just for punishment, not something that was in the works to right long time wrongs. Now the whole thing is a mess, which is what happens when you react emotionally and try to wield the legislature as a cudgel. Now on Twitter and Facebook if I’m bored enough to read the comments I see a bunch of people (who I’m assuming are real and not Russian bots) calling Disney a place for pedophiles and child groomers. They have the “right” to say that but it also makes me think they’re ****oo crazy.

I don't know much about the Disney thing TBH. There are zero places to go and get an unbiased portrayal of the situation.

I have no doubt Disney was doing more than exercising free speech though. To assume otherwise is pretty naive right?

This may explode in RD's face once the dust settles. A lot of money on the line.

You should assume the overwhelming majority of negativity posted on social media is either a bot or a troll farm.

Do away with SS. Replace medicare with basic preventative health needs, basic hospitalization care. I mean bare bones. Let people pay for the insurance they can afford. Minimum wage should be to prevent labor abuse, not a living wage.

Highway is physical infrastructure. Government should provide an electrical grid, water/sewer, ability to have gas, natural gas, and defense. Including a wall on our southern border. You don’t like our broken immigration laws? Change the law, don’t ignore it.
I largely agree with this, but I would keep social security. For what it does, it's a bargain. It's also one of the few tax programs we have that isn't stupidly progressive.

If you were going to privately buy life insurance, disability insurance, and an annuity that kicks in at age 67 that is potentially transferable to your family, you'd pay a lot more than your current social security tax.

Vindictiveness is never a good look for lawmakers/governors. But if people really felt Disney was doing harmful things, promoting sex change operations for children, etc, I can understand why Florida wouldn't want to continue to roll out the red carpet for them.

Also, these are not "culture wars", they are completely legitimate and appropriate political discussions.

After re-reading my OP and your response, I agree that the move on Disney smells of vindictiveness but I really don't know the details. Also, I think most people agree that cancel culture is not inherently evil, only that it has gotten a bit out of hand. I don't think anyone believes the State of Florida is trying to cancel Disney though.

No one here has any information about this case that is coming from a nonbiased source, so to go back and forth over this accomplishes nothing other showing one another which line you stand behind.

This is not a free speech issue unfortunately.

Because words can have consequences. For example, if someone repeatedly tweeted/stated that so and so is bad, and all people from that race are evil and they must be stopped and killed. Someone crazy is going to act out upon those statements. This is just one simple example.
Just like the recent NY subway killer or the guy that mowed down a parade of people with his car in Wisconsin. No one seemed to care about their anti-white, violent hate speech on social media. These actions resulted in numerous deaths, more injuries and a lifetime of pain for the families and loved ones and could’ve been prevented. You make a good point but the MSM and our social media platforms are too busy following a particular narrative and only banning/canceling certain individuals that fit into that narrative. It truly is insane

disney employs 80,000 in florida alone.

a list of pedophiles is hardly solid data.

to wit: "About 4 percent of the population is believed to have pedophilic urges. Psychologists now categorize it as a sexual orientation much like heterosexuality and homosexuality, in the sense that the sexual attraction to children appears to be involuntary and remains stable over time."

Was there some mass book burning I missed? Versus millions of people not able to see certain news stories that were “fact checked” as false. There’s a big difference. I choose not to buy Nike. I’m not “cancelling” them.

Why do we now need an office of disinformation conveniently after Elon Musk proposed to buy Twitter?

So its "choosing not to buy" when its causes/views you don't support and "cancelling" when its causes/views you do?

Were country radio stations "choosing not to buy" the Dixie Chicks when they were mass blacklisted after their comments regarding the War in Iraq?

It's just the latest tactic to try to brainwash the public. College professors of race relations gender studies aren't cutting it, apparently.

I doubt it's gonna fact check misinformation from blm that all cops are out to kill black men, leading them to resist and get shot.

It's a propaganda outfit, plain and simple.

SS is not solvent and you won’t get any money. That’s the beauty of our government. They take what they want and you get whatever’s left over which will be nothing after the current admin’s insane spending sprees. You actually voted for this bafoon?
Baboon or buffoon?

disney employs 80,000 in florida alone.

a list of pedophiles is hardly solid data.

to wit: "About 4 percent of the population is believed to have pedophilic urges. Psychologists now categorize it as a sexual orientation much like heterosexuality and homosexuality, in the sense that the sexual attraction to children appears to be involuntary and remains stable over time."

also, there's this:

you could probably get a more hard-hitting story from the local middle-school newspaper
Reading that 4% have pedophilic urges scares the crap out of me (admittedly less scary as I get older-lol). But it is really scary to see that pedophilia "urges" is seemingly being normalized w/ this post (unless I am missing the tone of your post, but I really did not want to click on that link and make some list)

Maybe I am not conservative enough, but I didn't get the notice to cancel 90% of these.

There is data that companies use that essentially states liberals are more likely to not buy from companies they disagree with than conservatives. And liberals are more likely to support a company that shares their views than conservatives. This is part of the reason why corporations skew more to liberal virtue signaling.... it brings in more benjamins. I think it is a fair statement that liberals support cancel culture more than conservatives. Feel free to disagree.
