I don't know, I think Yosh could pass for a Josh.
As for books, it really depends on the individual. A Netter is pretty much an essential, and I have not heard anyone say otherwise. Robbins Path is also a good one to pick up, but I'd check to make sure it is on your schedule as I've heard rumors, and only rumors mind you, that the 1st years might not get path in the core this year. But as a disclaimer I would check the schedule to make sure for yourself and not take my word for it.
I personally bought a fair number of books, not $2,600 worth, but prob around 500-600. But I'm the type that likes to have stuff around as a reference at any given time. It was a change of pace from Undergrad, as most things are, where I never opened a textbook. However, that is more due to my impatience now in that if I have a question I want to know the answer now rather than wait to ask the next day when I'll have forgotten my question. I know some people who got by with just a Netter and did very well, so I'd take a poll of second years when you get here to get the idea of which ones seem to be most highly recommended. As for equipment, they give you a list of all kinds of fancy toys. I'd say that in the beginning all you'd probably need is a stethescope, a reflex hammer, and a pen light. Everything else for the most part can wait, although if you do things like PCHAT or if you like to practice it can be nice to get an otoscope and opthalmascope. But you can get that stuff off the the internet for a cheaper price than at the bookstore if you feel ambitious during the spring semester.
If you are one of the ones who went military, scrap the above advice and get everything on the list. They pay for it, and the medical equipment is not a completely useless venture, not to mention some of the textbooks. I wouldn't go snapping up a lot of books now, but I'd wait to see if you feel some of them are really necessary for you. If you were to buy anything, Netter's your best bet.
