See, I didn't really think that part through. Do you know how much ram and drive space you need to run both systems? Apple has refurbished Mac Books on sale now. You can get the white 2GHz Mac Book for $1099.

It's actually better than I thought when I looked up the requirement for the two current operating systems. The the current mac OSX only requires 256GB ram and 4GB hard drive space and windows XP only needs 128GB ram and 2GB hard drive. So that refurbished macbook would be fine. The problem is more with Vista which needs at least 512GB ram and 40GB hard drive, and apple hasn't yet anounced the specs needed for leopard. However I'm pretty sure a 2GHz processor will be fine no matter what.

For those of us new to the Denver area, where are some kid-friendly places to watch fireworks?

mb,
We haven't figured out where we are going yet, but the Post has a list of some places

http://www.denverpost.com/fireworks

We may just go to City Park and watch the ones from Invesco Field.

Thanks for the tip. I'm assuming it's a zoo there WRT traffic and parking (no pun intended re: the actual zoo there). It's most likely the same everywhere though, huh?

Pretty much. there is also a whole kid friendly day at the Arvada fireworks. I think things get kicking at 2 pm and they have activities for kids all day. The events are at 53rd and Kipling (I think) but if you google arvada fireworks you should be able to ge the info.

I know you have to partition the hard drive. But that doesn't really effect the ram, does it? If you have 1gb ram, that's the same with or without boot camp, or am I getting this wrong? I might head over the Apple store and ask questions this afternoon.

Work is done. For those that are still at it, hang in there. 1 month to go before the fun begins....

MW, how are you getting such huge numbers? The insane out-of-state tuition is only for the first year -- after that you pay the in-state costs, so $130k or so for four years at the current tuition rates (not counting housing/food expenses).

I strongly strongly advise everyone here to hold off on expensive Palms and laptops until you see first-hand if you actually need them. Meowmix is right -- the Bookstore loves to do the boogedy-boo to sell the most expensive equipment ($600 diagnostic kits, etc.). I did not buy a Palm until third year and my Clie TJ25 with 12 mb RAM and a 32 MB memory card has proven to be plenty sufficient for the clinical years and now the residency.

Unfortunately, I think MW's numbers are correct. Tuition policy changed this year, and OOS students are OOS for all 4 years.

O.M.F.G. It will be a 100% in-state school within a year.

Tell me about it, Mumpu. It's truly a ridiculous law that will have some serious unintended consequences. I'm sick about it.

As an OOS i have mixed feelings about this whole thing. Of course i am not looking forward to owing thousands more in debt. On the other hand, i understand that each state wants to prioritize their medical school slots for their own residents, partly because those people are more likely to stay and practice in Colorado. However, given the shortage of doctors being produced, especially in primary care, one would think that they would want to do more to entice graduates to stay and practice in those fields. This most recent tuition policy certainly has the opposite effect (on both aspects!) on me. In a related note, does anyone know if it is still necessary to become a colorado resident. Obviously tuition is not an issue, but are there issues related to taxes, health care, ski discounts, etc. that make it worth my while to switch everything over right away?

Does anybody have any ideas on how much crap we'll have to tote to and from school each day?

I've been wondering the same thing, but I have no clue.
I found out yesterday that there is a direct deposit form on the bursar's website. I was told that we might be able to get our financial aid checks about 5 days earlier if we have direct deposit than via snail mail. The financial aid office said that it's always much faster if they don't have to print and mail the checks to us. If you're like me and you're anticipating the foot race b/w your credit card bill (thanks to moving expenses and the computer/pda) and your financial aid check, then you might want to look into direct deposit soon.

I sat in on a couple classes and it looked like most people brought a BIG three-ring binder with all their pre-printed lecture notes. Some people had books, some didn't. Some had snacks (I know I will as I am an all-day snacker--curses Snacksamine gene!!!), some didn't.

Now that I think about it, I went to an old curriculum class. So maybe we won't need to tote so many notes around.

Hi everybody! Looking forward to meeting all of you during orientation and just wanted to start getting in on your med school discussions. Looks like alot of you are out-of-state (non-residents); I am from Denver, born on campus 24-years ago. In that sense I kinda feel like a salmon swimming furiously upstream, battered and beaten to return to his spawing grounds. Although that analogy would fall apart right about there since I'm not planning to fertilize any eggs anytime soon, nor do I plan to die in the near future.

Hi BoredRlyin! Nice analogy....

I'm enjoying my month off and getting settled here in Denver. I'm surprised how much hotter it is here versus in Colorado Springs. It still doesn't compare to Texas, so I still consider myself very fortunate.

Does anyone have any insight to the difference in preceptorship experience between the available specialty options - Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, OB/GYN?

I assume most of us are going to get Family Medicine preceptors, and this is what I will most likely choose on the form; however, it would be nice to make an informed decision....

They're all Primary Care (except maybe surgery), so pick what interests you, not just what you think you'd randomly end up with. My roommate is early MS-3 and his preceptor is a surgeon. An associate of the peds-oncologist I used to shadow is preceptor to an MS-2, so its defo possible. I just emailed him asking all about the pros and cons of doing this, so keep posted and I'll try to fill you all in before the July31 submission deadline.

In the meantime, soak up the good times and try not to die of heat stroke.

I'm friends with an MSII whose preceptor is a peds-oncologist...hmmm...

Welcome to SDN BoredRylin. I actually laughed out loud when I read your salmon post. The drawback, so I hear, about having such a specialized preceptor is the expected lack of basic clinical experience. In this particular case, you already know what's wrong with the patients and there are limited things that you are able to do. Not that its bad, per se, just different than other FM experiences.

I talked to a couple of people before ultimately picking family med. To be honest, though, I was choosing b/w family med and internal med. I am interested in surgery, but I do not want to commit to surgery for the FoD program. As for OB/GYN and peds, at the moment I can't picture myself going into either of these two fields and I just feel like the patient populations are too narrow for an UNDECIDED like myself. So, I guess I can only provide info on the internal med vs family med decision. Probably a lot of you knew this already, but I didn't realize it until after I talked to someone, internal med docs don't see pediatric or OB patients. Wanting to keep things as broad as possible, this was the kicker for me. However, internal med docs often focus a lot on common adult problems such as cardiac problems. So, for all of you future cardiology, pulmonary, and renal specialists out there, maybe internal med is the way to go. As far as exposure to procedures, it really just comes down to the individual physician.
Anyone, please feel free to correct me on any of this! Keep in mind, this is officially 3rd hand and very general information.
Hey, any idea why they asked about interests and where we attended high school? Maybe interests are used to match us on personality, but high school? Do you think they will match us based on our high school mascots using the Chinese Zodiac? Conveniently, my birth year and high school mascot both put me in the year of the dog. Apparently, I would match well with alumni from the Pueblo South Colts, Canon City Tigers, and Springfield Rabbits...ok, I made that last one up.

I doubt there is anyone from the Harlingen Cockroachs or maybe the mascot was a bird. Oh well.

I've decided on the Family Practice preceptor. I figure it is the most broad, and it would give me the best opportunity to get exposure. Since I'm most interested in EM or Anthesiology, it would be good to see medicine from the perspective of FP.

Ha!! I took me a few minutes to even remember where I went to high school. But it did get me on google trying to see what happened to some of my old high school friends.

Taco, did you get my reply?

BTW: August 6 is the last City Park Jazz concert. It is also our last day of freedom. I was thinking I could set up a little class of 2010 blanket out and we could all meet up. any takers? Kids are welcome--Oscar comes every chance we have to go. Just bring a dish to pass and some beverages to share. I am also running a triathlon that morning--as if I can pack-in all my exercise and good times in 24 hours. Wasn't there a Edward Norton movie with the same premise?

Consider this an RSVP for my party of 5. We may just have to make it a party weekend - I've been brewing something else up for Saturday...stand by.

Myself and the other Tacos are game. gd - I did get your message - thanks!

BTW - My temperature/humidity sensor has been recalibrated. I've been in TX for almost a week and I am SO ready to get home!

Just bear in mind that you may get something completely different from what you ask for. Location can be much more important than specialty; you don't want to be driving to Boulder every week if you live in Highlands Ranch.

The questions about high school etc. are for matching with a second-year buddy.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this forum(website) and I'm going to be a MS1 at UCHSC in August. I found this by accident, but I know five other people that were are in our class and I'm letting them know that this forum exists.

Hey Classy!
Welcome! Are you from Denver orginally? I did my prereqs at Metro so just wondering if we would have been in the same classes.

There are many ways to go about Foundations. I did Family Medicine my first year, then switched to a cardiologist. The difference between FP and IM, aside from the woe and misfortune of seeing kids and pregnant people in FP, is that FP is very broad but superficial while IM is more focused and much more in-depth. If you are a detail- and mechanism-oriented person, I strongly advise IM. If you want more of a general picture approach, go with FP. If you want to be constantly sick for the first two years of med school, go with Peds.

Regardless, you can always switch after the first year, so don't stress about it. Just avoid Boulder and Greeley hippie clinics or get your pertussis vaccine updated before you start.

Thank you. This is a small world! I graduated from Metro, but back in the late nineties. Although I grew up in Dallas, I have lived in Denver for 14 years. I attended UCD last year for a postbacc. If you attended the pre-orientation back in April we probably saw each other.

Have you people completed those online training modules for VA individually identifiable privacy rules?? This is the kind of red tape beaurocracy we should all start getting really cozy with. So, so early to be griping, but hey, total, neverending snooze fest. Can you believe that there are multiple people in every hospital whose entire job description is to clarify these HIPAA guidelines to other employees?? I think I'll add a few of them to my speed dial.

45 minutes of my life I will never get back!!!

This may be after the fact for most people, but I'm wondering whether anyone is considering selecting a different lender than the one the school seems to be automatically setting us up with. I've found it has been surprisingly difficult to figure out the financial side of things. As far as I can tell, it seems that College Access Network, Nelnet, etc. are just intermediaries and the actual lenders are a consortium of banks, but I could have just made that up. Anyway, some SDN posts on FA mention Northstar T.H.E. to be a good lender. I'm interested in their program because it looks like it allows students to get a discount when repaying loans. Has anyone considered going with this or another alternative lender?

HIPAA, EMTALA, JCAHO, The Stark Act, The Ryan White Law... and a partridge in a pear tree. As those who have already worked in healthcare can attest to, this is just the first of many CBT and in-service sessions that are coming. The good thing is, we'll all have learned to sleep with our eyes opened so it's a great opportunity for a power nap and bagel.

Wow, so many new SDNers! Welcome all!

HA! Super small world since I spent 5 years of my life in Dallas getting my grad degree at SMU. Although I was there in the late nineties while you were here. I currently teach at UCD (Anthropology). I was there in April. I feel like we should be riding on an indoors canal with Disney animatons singing to us.

Damn Floyd I wish I had considered others. Northstar does look good. I totally fell into their "These students just want to finish filling out this form so they will pick one of 3 options." Damn.

And if your name is Floyd, that is a very cool name.

Just a quick heads up - I was at the school today and found out that anyone who filled out a Master Promissary Note for Direct Loans needs to fill a new one out for College Access Network. I filled out my stuff in March, received confirmation, etc. The school decided to change lenders in April, updated the link on the Financial Aid site, but didn't notify anyone who had already filled out the MPN and had gone through the entrance counseling. I had to redo it all today. I'm glad I stopped by to check on things or I wouldn't have known until after my disbursement was held up.

Oh yeah, I also talked with Willa and she said that almost 2/3 of our class have outstanding issues with their immunizations so don't think it's just you :)

Has everyone purchased their PDA already? If so, did you get the recommended Dell Axim x51v? I'm debating on purchasing this PDA sometime in the next few days or just waiting until classes begin to see if we actually need this top of the line model. What does everyone else think?? Thanks!

I'm planning on waiting to buy a PDA. I'll try to feel it out during orientation and the first few weeks of school. But from what current students have posted here and based on a conversation I had with someone in the school's IT department, it seems like we can work around the PDA requirement for the first two years. If I'm wrong, I'll buy one then.

Do what bkfaulkner said, and then buy the cheap stuff.

Hello, everyone. Just got back from our big trip to Europe. It was fantastic and I'm feeling nice and relaxed... (for the moment) and really excited to be seeing all of you in a little more than a week. I broke down and coughed up the $380 for the PDA yesterday and I'm sure I'll live to regret it.... oh well. In any case, I'm very excited.

How many of your spouses/significant others are planning on attending the event while we're gone? I would like mine to go, but I'm somewhat worried that if no one's there and its somewhat akward I may have used up my capital unwisely, which might make it harder to bargain for future events. Any thoughts??

gd - After my ride this morning, I'm realizing that there is no way I'm doing a tri next weekend - hopefully next time!

Hope you are all enjoying this last week - see you soon!

c'mon md, I went on my first bike ride in almost a month too today. I still signed up for the tri. Just think: it will all be over in 1.5 hours. It would be fun to have someone else to suffer with.

My hubby can't go to the thing while we are gone, he has a board meeting. But we are planning to go to the picnic in mid-August.

I also bought the PDA. I am actually picking mine up from school on Monday. I felt a need to redeem myself since my immunization record and transcripts still aren't complete. I will litterally be bringing in my immunization form to Willa on the Friday before orientation having had my 2nd TB test read that morning! I'm a loser.

I am looking forward to meeting you all a week from this Monday. --gd

Hey gd,

I dont know how recently you talked to willa, but they changed the requirement of getting a second TB test. Now they only require that you receive one TB test (the shot then subsequent reading 48-72 hrs later). She said they reviewed this about a week or so ago and decided that due to the amount of people still getting all the proper immunizations (myself included), they dropped the need for the second TB test. Hope this helps!

Hey there md! My wife has RSVP'd for the Orientation for Significant Others and we've also RSVP'd for the picnic on August 19th.

I'm glad you had a good time in Europe. I've spent about 6 months in various regions and absolutely loved it.

I went with THE after spending about 20 hours researching all the lenders. Navigating the finances is a royal pain, but if you have any questions about it, PM me.

Not to worry about feeling akward. My wife is planning on attending with our then 13 week baby. Your spouse will feel perfectly comfortable fitting in with the rest of the crowd that is trying to get away from the lady with the screaming baby :) .

I received my laptop and PDA last week and am loving them both. I am very impressed with the Axim PDA.

I look forward to meeting everyone next week.
