also along with my "award letter" question... here is another one... for those of you not living in walking distance how many people are planning on having a car? Im trying to decide if I should buy one right now.

heartbreaker-good luck with making the decision i had a hard time too...but i chose jefferson and i believe i made the right choice.
peas- i guess the award letter will tell u wat kinds of loans u qualify and the amount as well...and then u can chose how much u really want or what not( i am not sure though)
and i am not gona have a car...i had my tatse of taking the car when i went to the interview not worth it...public transportation is really really good...having a car will just get u getting stuck in trafic and paying a lot of money for parkiing...and most of the parking palces cost 5.50per half hour( too expensive for me)

yeah, be prepared to pay up the arse for having a car. Not just payments, but factor in gas, insurance, PARKING for school, PARKING at your place of residence (most likely extra). Statistically speaking, you'll probably get a parking ticket at least once.

yea I plan on living in Manayunk and will probably take the train to school. I might get the car just bc I cant imagine not having a car for the next 4 years, and a really good deal fell in my lap $11,000 for a mini cooper with 7,000 miles on it. I would prolly just use it to drive home on weekends sometimes or get to the store or wherever. I wish I had more money though, its making this decision difficult!

For those who's planning on attending Jefferson from S CA.. have you guys been interviewed at any schools in CA? if accepted, are you still thinking about attending Jefferson?

For those of you not on the Facebook group, it looks like our west coast summer meet is going to be:

Huntington Beach (lifeguard tower # TBA)
Saturday, July 12
Time TBA

If you want it to be at another date or location (Manhattan Beach in LA, Pacific Beach in SD, or Corona del Mar down in Newport), please log-in and post in the discussion thread on the Facebook group.

hey
i am filling out the financial aid and loan papers....and for the Federal Stafford Loan Application on one of jefferson's worksheet says the maximum is 12,000per year for independent students...im kinda confused isnt like our tuition 27,000per year..so how are we suppose to pay all of this ??
are we just gona have to borrow from independent lenders??:eek::eek:

nerv-but did u just say that u wanted 12,000 when they asked u to fill out that form??

another question i did not file taxes cause i dont own anything to the irs i didnt work too much in 2007....so if i list how much i made on that worksheet that jefferson has wud that affect my financial aid?

and another question....did u guys complete MPN for only one lender or as many as u can? :) :)

think: i got the 12k and the 8.5k

i have yet to fill out the MPN because i am also confused about it

edit: a rather silly question...but lets assume somebody borrowed 40k for a year but didn't really use the entire amount and has...lets say 5k extra, can the person pay back/return the remaining amount in order to avoid interest rates after graduation, etc?

u alreday got the 18k and 8.5k? ...awsome
oh and i am not sure abt ur question i dont think they will allow u to do that

I don't believe you can return it... but i'm sure you can use that extra money to make a payment back on the loan and have it applied toward the principle balance. I think...

Have you already gotten your award summary? I'm still waiting to see. I've been getting phone calls from my potential lenders asking me if i'm ready to apply for the private loan with them... but I'm still trying to figure out how much i'm going to take out.

that's what i mean, if i'm understanding what you said correctly

i haven't gotten anything yet, i applied for it a few weeks ago though

i emailed the University Director of Financial Aid (Susan B. McFadden) about what the cost of non-tuition expenses were and this is what she replied to me with:

"The Cost of attendance budget for a student NOT living at home with parents
is $44,960. This is made up of the following:

Tuition and fees $28127
Room and Board $12771
Books/supplies $1740
Transportation $1467
Misc $855

If you need health insurance, that cost would be built in to the budget as
well.

Does this help?

Susan"

Thanks for the perspective. It really makes my estimation not too off from what she gave u. I'm just trying to figure in food cost... did she include it in the room and board? If so... is that estimate based on living in the "dorms", living in the 1br alone, or sharing a place?

Also... with the deadline for the financial aid stuff, does that include or application for private loans as well?

Does everything have to be sent in by May 1 ?( like the mpn..etc?)

Think, I went to the Financial Aid Seminar and was told that there was an error on the website and we should be able to request $8,500 and $20,500 (not $8,500 and $12,000). I was also told that we would be able to request up to $31,000 or so in Stafford loans but I don't know how they did that math. I come up with $29,000. If you already filled out the application, which I assume we all did, they will be contacting you by email as to how to correct this problem.

It wasn't until over an hour into the seminar before this was addressed. Believe me, I was freaking out when I saw the the cost is about $28,000 a year and we were only going to be able to request a third of it.

I actually only completed my financial aid stuff a few days ago (yes I procrastinated). My stafford loans were $8500 subsidized and $24500 unsubsidized (total = $33000 in federal stafford loans). Barely enough to cover tuition and books.

What the freak-o. I'm gonna call financial aid 2morrow to see if there is a way to correct this amount for those of us who did our paperwork early. I've already tried emailing them... but no one responded back...

Let me know what happens. I have to fix my amount too

Email from karen stating our official tuition cost:
http://www.jefferson.edu/registrar/tuition.cfm
annual tuition cost: $27,627

Question. How do you find out how much was requested in loans for Stafford? I think I put down the maximum allowed - i figured I would lessen it once I received the award letter - i hope i'm doing it right.

I'm a bit confused, so when applying for financial aid I just need to fill sign in and fill out the forms listed under Financial Aid when I log in like (institutional application, verification worksheet, federal stafford loan application, federal work study app, etc) right? And do I just mail in a copy of my parents and my tax return? Anyone know if the tax returns need to be received by May 1? I hope I'm not missing anything else.

you just need to complete whats on the list - eventually once they get it, it'll say "received & complete" (something along those lines) i believe.

I emailed Financial Aid a week ago, frantically trying to clear my requirements. They finally emailed back today. Here was the response I got, just in case someone had the same/similar questions:
1)We only need the first two pages of the 1040 and just make sure it signed some where.
2)No, the MPN and Entrance Interview are not due by May 1st.
3)The three lenders on our list do both Federal and Private loans as well. Our recommendation is for you to choose the lender that will best fit your Stafford and Private Loan needs. Remember since you are a Graduate Student you are also eligible to borrow a Graduate Plus loan instead of a private alternative loan.

To whaa: You need to go here http://www.jefferson.edu/financialaid/chp_apply.cfm and log into banweb ("proceed" link at the bottom of the page) to finish these requirements. After you've finished each one, it will automatically list that the requirement has been met. As for the MPN and entrance interview, MPN is sent by the lender and entrance interview will be viewable by financial aid via a list generated each day of who has completed this requirement.

I find it a little weird how Karen and Susan (look at previous post) had different amounts for the cost of tuition. I hope Karen's amount is correct. :)

Karen's tuition should be correct bc its the official tuition while Susan's seems to be estimated.

If you check your jeffmail - karen sent us all the email with this official tuition (it is also listed on jeff's website)

how long does it take for the award letter to come? I submitted my stuff like 3 weeks ago !

I had a complete application in March or so...so yeah, guess they're waiting for all of it to come in before crunching fwd.

Are we supposed to send in all of our transcripts from every college we attended before school starts??

Hi everyone! So i finally got our answer... i emailed about the award letter, heres the reply:
We gave all the new students until yesterday to get their paperwork complete. You should be receive your award letter sometime this month, closer to the end of the month.

So you can keep an eye on your Banner web account because it will show up there before you receive the letter in the mail.

So be on the lookout!

btw... should we send our final transcripts directly to jeff? probably right?

send final transcripts to

Office of Admissions - Jefferson College of Health Professions
130 S. 9th St
Suite 100
Philadelphia, PA 19107

Financial aid deadline already passed. We should stop worrying about this, send in ALL our transcripts, and then plan out where to party once August/Sept rolls around. :D

pssst i'm awake, why aren't you on AIM

Atlantic City sounds like a good idea! So are we going to take a subway there altogether? lol

hi guys! i just found out today i got accepted! wooho!!! but...did you say the financial aid deadline passed?

That's the "priority" deadline for institutional grants/scholarships from Jefferson, according to the financial person on the phone.

For federal loans, it's definitely not too late.

ok so has anyone gotten their award letter or anything from Jeff financial aid yet? bc i havent and I'm about to call. this is crazy

What do we put for date of graduation or year program at TJU concludes in our housing application? Do we put the graduation year 2012? I'm also a bit confused with rankings, I want to live by myself for first year in single rooms (my first choice) but when it comes to 2 bedrooms, etc I wouldn't mind to have a roomate for those since it would be cheaper how do you rank that?

Hey you guys. I just checked banner and it looks like our award summaries are posted. I'm still a bit confused about the amount we are able to loan in terms of Federal Stafford loans. Has anyone gotten a clarification on that yet? I read above that we were able to take up to 20k in unsubsidized loans?

I have listed $8,500 for subsidized and $12,500 for unsubsidized

Also, this was the budget break down that I got off of banner as well.

Budget Component Amount Books & Supplies $1,740.00
Miscellaneous Expenses $855.00
Room & Board $12,771.00
Tuition & Fees $28,127.00
Transportation $1,467.00
Total: $44,960.00

Hey all,

I just checked Banner and I've been awarded. I called Financial Aid about the total amount for the subsidized and unsubsidized loan. They said that the maximum amount that we can get is $8,500 for subsidized and $24,500 for unsubsidized. At the beginning, it was listed that we could only get $12,000 for unsubsidized because they had to verify how much pharmacy students could loan up to since it's a new program. They said everything will be explained in the award letter that we will be receiving soon. But if you want to increase your unsubsidized amount, just send them an e-mail using your Jefferson's e-mail.

Anyone else got $2000 dollars scholarship letter in the mail.
it's renewable every year, so it's $8,000 max for 4 years.

I received the dean's scholarship for 5,000 annually, which is only renewable if I maintain a 3.0 gpa. So that would be 20,000 in scholarship money. Haven't received an award package yet, guess I didn't turn in everything on time. :(

What did you have to do to apply for the Dean's Scholarship? Was it seperate from the financial aid application?

they're probably a bit slow..they haven't even sent out our stafford awards yet. you'll get it around the same time we all get the stafford stuff i'm guessing
