Thomas Jefferson University - Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What did you have to do to apply for the Dean's Scholarship? Was it seperate from the financial aid application?

I didn't do anything extra, just filled out TJU financial aid application. The letter says something like I was chosen b/c of my strong academic performnace and potential for success in Pharmacy. So I'm guessing they just looked at your scores and gpa and gave out scholarships accordingly.

Anyone else thats living on campus hear from housing with their assignment? Looks like I'll be in Orlowitz 11th Floor and our lease starts on August 16th.

When did you get your housing packet? I just got my financial aid packet in the mail yesterday.

They just gave me a call today. She said I should get my packet in a couple days since I accepted the offer.

Hello I am flying in from Los Angeles to attend the orientation on august 12th. I was wondering if you guys are planning on staying in philly from then or go back home and return for welcome day.

I wanna go on vacation Aug 12. I wish it wasn't mandatory to go to the orientation. I wonder what would happen if we skipped... haha and I live in the area, but if i was flying that far and had a place to stay, I doubt I would waste the airfare and fly back and then come back again 2 weeks later... but I personally live 45 min from the school so I guess I dont really know.

dude...i have a final that week...i have to fly from LA to philly, go to orientation, fly back, and take a lab final 2 days later...then fly back to philly a week or two later to move in. sucks!

I'm going to be 2PD next year at UF, but I went to TJU for my BS degree a hundred years ago :) I stayed at Orlowitz for most of the time. Congratulations to those who are going to be the first group of students graduating from TJU-COP....I miss TJU and Philadelphia

has anyone been able to access the HIPAA & Safety training page? I emailed student affairs but no reply yet.

yes, i finished both of them a few weeks ago

i think if you try and access it at odd hours, the server/site/whatever may not be online. try to get on it during normal day hours and you should be fine.

hmmm ok i'll do that. are you def living on campus now? i'll be on the 6th floor, barringer.

I've had all my finanancial aid stuff turned in for like 5 weeks now and still havent heard anything on bannerweb or through the mail! its so annoying. when i emailed at the end of week 3 they said id hear soon. do you find out scholarship info when you get your fin aid award packet? or I would have heard by now if I got one? anyone know?

Thats strange, I think you should email or call financial aid again - bc i believe most of us have received our award letter. I'm from NJ and I got mine back in mid june; it told me how much i'm getting from loans and grants. some people above have also received scholarships so you should def contact them.

Yea I mean I've emailed twice already and I hate to be a stalker but when you tell me 2-3 weeks and takes 5 thats pretty ridiculous. I've been obsessively checking everyday and nothing! I just wanna get everything squared away!

Peas, they sent me a separate letter stating that I have received a scholarship with the terms of that scholarship included. I got that letter about 2 weeks before I got my reward letter on banner and through the mail.

Hey,

I still haven't gotten my financial aid packet, either. I, too, got a Dean's Scholarship, but haven't heard anything about my loans, etc. I wrote the financial aid office, but no one will get back to me. I agree- VERY FRUSTRATING!

Also, did anyone else buy a house in Philly? My husband and I are bidding on a property now, and the whole process is very scary!

any advice/recommendations/warnings for us about the school and city, LilBambuDancer?
Gosh, it's been such a long time since I went to school there. I'm not sure if my experience with the city and the school still holds true.
Philadelphia has all what big cities have to offer jam packed in a few block diameter, and TJU is located within the hub of activities of Philadelphia. You are within walking distance or a short bus ride or subway ride to shopping malls, lots of restaurants, grocery stores, bar/club, museum, etc,.....For those of you who like chinese food, Chinatown is just a few blocks away.
However, Philadelphia has a pretty high crime rate. I was advised by the student counselor to carry a mace on my keychain for self defense and to always walk with someone after dark. Fortunately, nothing bad ever happened to me or anyone I know. I felt pretty safe within TJU vicinity. There were many times I felt safe enough to walk to the convenience store by myself after midnight to get a snack.
As far as pharmacy school is concerned I would recommend getting a printer that can print double sided. You will be going through lots and lots of papers. Some people recommend buying laser printer to save money on ink. For myself, I have a multifunction color ink jet printer and I'm pretty happy with it. Sometimes it really helps to print in color and the cartridges can be refilled at Walgreens at a relatively decent price.
Hope it helps.

ok so i emailed and got no answer and then emailed again and then decided just to call. the guy i talked to said his director is trying to finish stuff for another program that is due next week so pharmacy has taken a backseat or something. he said he prolly responded to my first email and gave me a wrong timeline bc he didnt realize i was pharmacy... no clue why we are at the bottom of the priority list since i had all my stuff in at the beginning of june? so he told me my stafford loan info bc that is done but apparently some stuff isnt posted or mailed out yet bc the schol hasnt added their part of scholarships etc etc and whatever else they add. so anyone else that is waiting like me hopefully after next week we'll start seeing some results! bc this is crazy!

Its a miracle! They finally posted my fin aid stuff! but what does "CHP Loan-5% -------3,000$" mean? I only coud see my posted stuff online not through the mail yet so maybe it will explain in a letter, but does anyone know?

They'll send you the physical letter soon. CHP Loan is a 5% interest rate loan directly from Jefferson.

greetings and congrats on getting in thomas jefferson university kids.

hope to see you in filly

-love given by another class of 2012 student from the other pharmacy college in philadelphia that isn't temple university

MISSED ORIENTATION
I missed orientation today. Had major bad luck with my car. Can anyone give me a rundown of what went down and what info was provided. Thanks

Ahh I love Jefferson.

I thought I'd post back here as I haven't posted in a while. My iffyness regarding who will be teaching us has been solved. Glad to know that a large chunk of the professors that are teaching us are from the jefferson medical college and from the graduate program. Also, the faculty recruited from USP and other colleges, as well as the "founding" Jefferson faculty members are simply top notch...I really like them.

I'm going to like it here :D

+1.
beats the hell out of USC. i'm SO glad i didn't get in there cuz my entire family would have begged me to go there

I also would like to add that I LOVE my IPPE site. The MS-IV's just handed off the Rx pad to me and I wrote off a bunch of scripts for a pt w/ DM the other night. The attending just signed off on them. It's fun working with the MS-I's, MS-IV's, residents, pharmacy residents, and pt's.

I also got to take pt med histories for some of the new pt's we got and sit in on examinations in the clinic doing basic stuff like taking BP and listening to heartbeat/breathing. Gooood times. HUGE improvement this week from last week...I'm feeling more comfortable moving around the clinic.
:luck:

Yea...faculty that left us in the middle of the year during my 5th year therapeutics. Great work faculty.

Happy Holidays to all, if you have any questions about the first year at Jefferson just let me know!!!! I will be more than happy to help.:thumbup::thumbup:

I would like to know what a typical day is like for the students. We have entered a new year and i'm trying t get all potential jeffersonians in here to make some updates.

Ditto to that! I also will be a first year student in the fall! What pointers do you guys have?? :)

Typical day: classes start usually at 10am, sometimes 9am (1-2days/week)
we have classes 3-4hrs/day usually in the same classroom.
Then usually from 3pm on your day is free. For me, I head to the library study and have breaks for dinner and such.

I think most of us study a fair amount until thursday, fri, & weekend. Thursday is Marathon night usually, $1 drinks across the street from barringer.

For your first year half of the class will be in community pharmacy and 2nd semester is service learning (each half switches so everyone will do both). Its called an IPPE (Introduct. Pharm Pract Experiental) and its 3hrs / week. Community is basically going to indep pharmacies, and chain stores... you learn from the preceptor in charged of that pharmacy. Service learning is more dealing with community service, interacting with the low income, homeless, disabled population --- its more interesting IMO.

Tips? nothing really. Come to Philly with an open mind (it is a city with many homeless people around), explore the city as much as you can before starting classes, create a fb group and mingle & get to know your fellow classmates before starting. Classes are small so you'll know everyone after a few months. No tips for classes, if you really want to do something then review your A&P. You'll get patho I and they'll expect you to know what happens normally bc it won't really be reviewed... Other than that, i wouldn't worry too much. Just enjoy it before you get here... pharm school is tough!

I hope that helps.

Were there many kinks for you guinea pig inaugural class students to work out? Was/is the faculty open to your suggestions/complaints etc? I'm sure there will still be glitches for us too.

Even though I'm apprehensive about living in the city, I'm excited to start.

No dirt on USP really except the location is extremely ghetto, would NOT want to live in that area... and the student population is ~50% brown?

I think there will be kinks throughout the program. The program is new and adjustments are anticipated. The faculty's pretty accommodating and easy to talk to. In my opinion, they are pretty open to suggestions and I see that they try pretty hard to address our concerns. So as far as I know, the program is still changing and you're going to be second generation guinea pigs. :D

I think every class up until the first class graduates will be considered guinea pigs.

The program will continue to grow as its study body grows. We are always looking towards ways to improve ourselves.

Hey everyone. I'm not sure if anyone cares but just thought other students should know a good website to check out some housing if need be. This website really helped me out.
