Thanks WCGee!

Just to be sure, could I possibly get a timeline of the things we need to send in to the admissions office?

So far I have only submitted the interest form for financial aid along with my indication of acceptance of course.

I know the deposit is due May 15, and the health forms are due June 1st. As long as I have realized, it seems that the housing forms don't have a due date and housing is assigned on a first come first serve basis, right?

Am I missing any other things here? Since this is my only acceptance, I have to do everything right.

Can't wait to meet you all in August!

What form what this?

What form what this?

I remember it being a green paper and asks you if you're interested in this field of medicine (derm, ob/gyn, etc.), or if you're disadvantaged, or interested in Health Service Corps, etc. Not sure, but I think they use it to send you more information, you should have received it along with your acceptance letter.

Oh, was that the letter we sent back signed when we were originally accepted? Sorry, just neurotic...

futuredoc and bunso,
I really felt tired right now. I have not received my financial package yet and I have the same problem as yours, futuredoc. I called AMCAS and they told me that the problem should be fixed from school and Penn State told me that they want AMCAS fix it. I don't know how long it will take but I'm getting tired with these things.
I'll call admission this Friday.

Hold on tight catau, the wait is worth it at Penn State (assuming that we get a good financial package). They said that as long as we did our FAFSA before the deadline we should be ok with our financial package (hopefully) even though we are getting delayed. Oh, and I've decided to go to second look so I'll see you guys there!!!

bunsoy,
Thanks for your encouragement. I'm looking for ticket now and it's so expensive (350$) poor me. Did you guys receive your schedule for second look yet? I have not received anything from PSU. Can't wait to see all you guys.

Still no schedule, and it's coming up quick! Hurry PSU, hurry!

I think so. It's just so you can be considered for the few $s they have for grants/scholarships. You probably already turned it in, but you can call and ask.

Hey, my info is now uploaded with the Penn State Database; they said it will take a week or two until I receive my financial stuff.

I wanted to ask you guys whether you think I should sign up for the second look?

Here is my situation: At this point, I have only been accepted to Penn State. In other words, I am not deciding where I want to go right? I am still waiting to hear back from a private college and my state school put me on the hold list. :(

So I guess there is no legitimate reason for me to spend the time and money to travel right? But at the same time, the second look could be SO informative about housing, and general life in Hershey. I did not have time to really explore different facilities at Penn State including their gym. So what do you guys think? Should I just rely on finding good housing online and assume that they have a very good gym?

By the way, another thing I wanted to ask is this. I still havent submitted my deposit fee. I will definitely send it next week because I already heard back from my state school. Are there any documents such as forms that should go along with the check? Or should I just write a check, put it in an envelope and send it in? See, I have so much paper work in my file from applications that I am worried that I might be missing some documents that PSU sent me.

Let me know what you guys think of all this! ;)

bunsoy,
Congrats. You don't have to worry it any more. I'll call admissions tomorrow. I don't know why it takes so long to solve this problem. I'll see you at second look.

@futuredoc,
med school is HUGE investment. You will be in debt about 200,000 after med school. Do you want to consider your investment carefully before make a decision? Spending $500 (only 0.25% of your total debt) to learn about this investment is worthy.

As for the deposit, I just sent mine in the other day along with a note with my name and AMCAS id. They sent an email to confirm that they got it and mentioned that it is still refundable until May 15th.... so don't worry about that.

I agree with the above poster--it's gonna cost me some much needed money to visit PSU again from Illinois, but I figure it's worth it.

Also, I sent in my deposit with my name and AMCAS # and it worked out fine--email confirmation followed.

Yeah, that's true! But the thing is that most of you guys have multiple acceptances and I don't. At least up to now! I might still get into one school I havent heard back from. My state school (Maryland) will probably let me know much later if I get in from the holdlist. So I guess I really have no choice but go to Penn State, right? See I am not worried about the money that I need to spend to travel, because I live two hours away from Hershey, and I could even drive on the same day and come back at night without requiring a host. It is just that I know that I will be going there for sure, and there is nothing I am trying to decide on. I guess I could go on and on with this.

By the way, I was one of the people who had to resolve the issue on their AMCAS. I just received the email about second look today. It seems to be a very good opportunity to get to know the school better. So to anyone who goes, I think they will learn a lot! If I end up going, I will see you there! ;)

I think that even if I only had one acceptance, I would still go. If anything, you learn more about the school and the area, get to see tours of stuff, and meet some prospective classmates, no? Anyhow, I'll be there, maybe we'll meet! :)

Hey everyone, just wanted to make sure I am up-to-date with my paperwork and all at PSU. To date I have sent in:

  • Acknowledgement form signed (that came with initial acceptance letter)
  • $100 Deposit
  • Online Housing form(On-campus housing)

and know that I need to send in all of the health paperwork by June 1st.

I have received the financial aid award notification as well, and as far as I know, I do not have to sign anything or technically accept this at all? From what I understand come August in Orientation I will officially accept the loans?

Anything I missed?

I don't understand why you would not want to go if you live so close and its so easy to get there? For me, it means traveling from the west coast, taking time off of work, etc., if it the second look was longer than just one day, I would probably do it, but as it is, I cant really justify it..... although it would be fun to meet everyone.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to say that I actually decided to go for the second look day. :D I received their email this Friday(April 20), but I actually emailed them yesterday afternoon, and told them that I was sorry that I did not reply on time. I was just so busy this whole weekend that I really did not have time to think about whether I should go. But yesterday afternoon, I came on SDN and I saw so many students that are going from FAR places such as the west coast. So I replied to their email. I am hoping that it is not too late and I will still be able to go. I also wanted to say that I am glad that my future classmates are so supportive on SDN.

By the way, do you guys think I should go ahead and fill out the housing form online or wait until second look day to check out the apartments before doing that?

I hope to meet you all there.

I filled my housing form out even though I'm not 100% sure I'm attending PSU--if you need to cancel it for some reason in the future, there are no ramifications as long as you didn't already sign the lease and stuff that they mail you later. Also, it's somewhat on a first-come, first-serve basis (after date requested for move in) so it's to your benefit to sign up now just to make sure.

Yep, it's not binding at all. They just call you a few weeks before your desired move-in date and ask whether you would like to still be considered. Hopefully I get on-campus housing, it will be nice to roll out of bed and stumble to class.

I guess we'll receive the detail schedule of second look this monday. I'll post it here once I received it.

Does anyone know when the orientation dates and schedule will be posted? The website still has the information for the class of 2010.

Hey guys, Im a first year here. If any of you guys are looking for very affordable housing ($283/mo) with two roommates (one guy, one girl) let me know. We are looking for either a male or female--Doesn't matter. Place is very close to the campus. Less than 5min away from campus.

you could also email me at [email protected]

cya guys at second look! :)

hi guys,
No Fin Aid yet. No detail of second look yet. :( Please post here if anyone have receive the detail. Did you guys finish your health forms? I don't have a personal physician (no insurance, I'm self-insured) so it's a little hard for me to get one to sign.
see ya all this saturday.

Were you also one of the people that was listed as an international student catau? I wonder what takes so long for finaid.

Also, what is PSU is up to? That's crazy that there's still no schedule for 2nd look!

As for health forms, I work in my PCP's office. I'll probably ask him to run the titres this week.

You might check with the urgent care clinics in your area, any nurse practioner clinics, free clinics etc. I volunteer in a free clinic that does free sports physicals for kids (they would probably do school physicals for students too if someone asked). An NP clinic in our area does them for $28. Titers are another story... I think they are pretty expensive. Luckily I needed them for work last year so our hospital did them for free (hopefully year-old ones will be ok).

Hi futuredoc and everyone,
Yes. I'm the one that PSU listed as an int student. They told me to wait till this week again. I received an email from a first year PSU today ( I assumed all of you get one too) regarding housing. My understanding is on second look day, PSU will arrange places for us to stay. Can anyone confirm this?

Yeah I had the same problem. But I thought the issue has already been resolved. See, for me it is even more interesting because FAFSA had trouble verifying my citizenship as well. I think we will get the info soon though. I am excited for the second look day! By the way, I did not receive an email about housing. I am not sure about the schedule of the second look day regarding how the housing will go, but I would imagine that they will not arrange for us to a certain place. Rather, they would just show us the different housing complexes, with costs, etc. What do you guys think?

Hi All,

I just received the Second Look Day schedule this morning via e-mail. I'm posting it here in case someone didn't receive it.

Looking forward to meeting you all this weekend!

Hey PSU 2011ers,

Wow the second look seems like such a great glimpse into penn state.
I have a question regarding the green sheet that came with the acceptance envelope. It is "Interest Information for Financial Aid For Applicants." I did not fill it out yet. I believe I already recieved my financial aid report (which I sent back with a copy of my SS# card). I am a bit confused if I should fill this out as well as I don't really know what it pertains too.

Also on a different note, when are housing applications due? And how do we go about filling them out
Thanks in advance !

Were we supposed to send something back from the financial aid letter? I didn't see that.

As for the green sheet... I am not sure if it really matters, since I haven't seen anyone get scholarship money yet. But I guess it wouldn't hurt.

Hey, I filled out my housing application a month ago, but now I'm starting to worry that I should've put an earlier date. I put my move-in date as August 1st, what did everyone else put?

Did you have to send in a copy of your SS card?? I do not recall reading that anywhere.

Should I take this to mean, "but wear khakis" or "boots, nice jeans and a button down shirt"? Basically to wear khakis(which I'm not sure fit) or nice jeans?

I emailed the coordinators of the second look weekend 5 minutes ago--when I get an answer, I'll post.

They will assign a host to you if you ask them to via email in advance...so if you need one, I would either call or email them asap.

I got a letter in addition to the financial aid letter that says i should confirm my SS number with my card. I thought this was standard...maybe not?
Anyway I saw what you all were saying about the online housing form..I filled it out for 1 bedroom, August 1st also.
Thanks!

So I asked if we could wear jeans and a t-shirt and he said that business casual would work best, but whatever you're comfortable in is fine...so business casual it is!

Also, my parents are coming along and apparantly they're with you the entire time except for when you do the PBL lecture stuff (then they go on a tour of the hospital)...we'll see how that goes.

Can't wait to see everyone! :)

Hi guys,
My problem with citizenship is not resolved yet.:( I don't know how long it takes for this. However, Fin Aid sent me an estimate for the cost. It's 60K per year. My question is should we do anything for Fin Aid? Do you guy have to sign and return anything? I'm finishing up my health forms. See you all tomorrow.

I haven't received the estimated cost yet. I already think I will probably receive mostly loans if not all.

I am so excited for second look day! As I said before, I will be driving to PSU on Saturday morning. I will probably leave my house around 6:30 to get there on time. My parents are coming along. I am hoping it will be interesting for them, because they are not very comfortable with the English language.

So are you guys signed up for any of the social activities?

No pre/post activities for me, I gotta come back to school(still in undergrad) and finish some stuff up on Saturday night.

Same here. I actually have SO much work to do. All the projects and papers, etc. At least I take a break on Saturday during the day :D.

Ditto. I had to miss today's classes because my family DROVE from Chicago to Hershey = 11.5 hours. I'm bolting right afterwards too, because I have to get back to Champaign to do a bunch of work--our finals week starts on Friday!

But yeah, I was sick before and all this driving made my muscles all achey, so when you all see me 9 hours, I'll be the one falling asleep. :)

How did second look go?

Oh the second look day was very informative. They had several sessions run by Dean of Admissions or other physicians or the students themselves regarding Penn State and life in Hershey. There was also one PBL session in which I actually learned a lot. There was also a lot of food. :D

But I have a question for those who went. I think I learned much about the on-campus housing. However, my parents were told yesterday that it is much better to put the start date for on-campus housing earlier than Aug. 1st to make sure we actually get it. They had heard that because the on campus housing is so popular, there is a chance that it might not be available if we put in a later move in date. Now, I did not talk to any students to verify this so I am not 100% sure. Did you guys hear anything on similar trends regarding the on-campus housing?

Also, how many of you guys are planning to buy the PSU laptops? It seems much more expensive than outside sources, but at the same time it is compatible to their system. Currently I have a PC (not a laptop I mean) which I am pretty happy to use now. You know when I was getting a tour of campus yesterday, I noticed computers everywhere. Also if I decide to live on campus (which I most definitely will), I have easy access to on campus resources. So do you guys think it is possible for me to not buy a laptop at all? This is just a thought, so dont get mad at me if it sounds silly!

Thanks and I hope that you guys enjoyed the second look day!

The computers seemed ridiculous. $1,600 for a laptop that just happens to save you several minutes of your time by already having PSU software? I can spend $1,000 on a laptop that is probably better. Housing was awesome too!

I actually left right after lunch :p , but yeah, it was pretty informative.

I talked to a few students--it seems as if about half of them bought the laptops and the other half use their own from home without a problem. And yes, there are computer labs everywhere, so I'm just gonna use my old Toshiba and use the PSU ones if something goes wrong.

In regards to housing, I didn't get to go on the tour because I left early, but I saw pics and talked to some current students who definitely recommended putting the move-in date as earlier than Aug. 1--I'm pretty sure I asked for July 26 or something around there...I love the convenience of on-campus housing, but off campus housing actually seems a lot cheaper if you're gonna have roomates.

Also, the PBL was interesting? You guys are gonna have to let me know exactly how that went--it was scheduled to be an hour long session and I was tired (12 hour drive from Chicago the night before) and was like "they're gonna make me do some actualy thinking? screw that!"

Overall, though, PSU impressed me and now I'm deciding between PSU and MCW--I'm definitely withdrawing from my state school.
