Thanks for the update! Now I can rest in knowing all Midwest programs rejected me. :lame:

Does anyone know if there is a difference b/w the Midwest programs vs east coast, NYC hospitals? Only Those hospitals appear to be interested in me :soexcited:

You never know where that next interview is going to come from - looking at last year's thread, there were always some invitations that were extended beyond the initial batch as conflicts or spots came up, and some programs just have later deadlines than others.

I always keep my rejection letters (I hope my collection pile doesn't get too big this year, though), and I'll fondly look back on those if I end up matching to a program this year.

So, keep your hopes realistic, and hope for the best while preparing for the worst. Good luck with those interviews as the peak season of nov/dec comes around. And have some fun this Halloween weekend!
 
Got a UIC rejection letter today:( I am just excited I have some (2) interviews.

So nobody has heard from Montefiore, Columbia, Brookdale, or Interfaith yet?
 
JUst a quick question for all those a little more experienced in what these programs are looking for than I am...
I was hoping to apply early next year since I applied late september this year and didn't get ANY interviews....should I even bother applying next year when these are my stats?
UF/3.4GPA/bottom half rank/88 NB part 1 and three years of experience working full time at a pedo practice.
I only can apply to Florida programs though. Any advice would really help.

Ok guys, here is how Post MATCH works:
first of all, in the past few years for Peds, there have been very few Post MATCH spots available, so just be realistic. There are one or 2 programs (eg Lutheran in Brooklyn) that purposely do not MATCH all of their spots; they leave 1 or 2 spots open so that they can pick who they want.
Up until about 4 years ago, places like NYU, which may be less desirable since they charge a LOT of $$$$, had as many as 4 or 5 (out of 10) post MATCH spots. Based on the past 4 years, those days are no longer.
Again, just being realistic here guys.
Basically, after the MATCH, the MATCH website will post a list of all the open spots nationwide, as well as who to contact. It is not really a first come-first served situation, because the program directors can pick, at their leisure, whoever they want to pick. You should contact them to find out what they require you to send, and they will then give you a time-frame when to hear back regarding an interview. If you have already applied to a place that now has a post-MATCH spot, then they already have your application and they may, or may not, give you a second chance.
This may also be a good time to have a "connection", such as a department chairman, call the program director who has the open spot. Just be aware that open spots are at the program directors complete discretion, and it is not unusual to hear about post-MATCH spots going to current students of that school, or if it is a hospital, residents in GPR programs at that hospital. Basically, to people who they already know and have a connection with.

i got placed on the waitlist for a couple programs (namely temple and jacobi). from what i understand, the way it works is that if anyone cancels their interview date, they call applicants from the wait list to fill-in. sooo...if you're not really into those programs, open them up for those of us that really wanna go there :)

Although I am definitely willing to wait for the 2012 programs, I was wondering how often is it that some programs don't fill all positions and then accept late applicants. Just wondering. (Please don't get offended by this question.)

It happens. There are a handful every year. Competition is fierce though.

Congradulations to those recieving interviews. I would reccomend buisness casual for all dinners (slacks and button shirt or equivilant). As for Interviews the New York schools seemed to be the last ones to send invites (which may even come in early December). For those Not getting interviews the post-match is insane and most possitions as stated earlier are filled by people that already had connections to those schools. I did a GPR in between cycles. I would reccomend doing Externships/Visits to programs to get recognized. They help unless you have a personality that turns people off. I know of even people in their 3rd year of dental school that have visited our program. Some externs definaltly helped themselves by comming while others may have hurt themselves by externing. Personality is huge in this specialty. Best of luck to everyone and I'm sure I'll see some of you soon.

I know of even people in their 3rd year of dental school that have visited our program. Some externs definaltly helped themselves by comming while others may have hurt themselves by externing. I have an interview at Montefiore on December 3. For personal reasons, I can't make that day. I called Monte but they said all the dates are filled. Is there anyone out there that would be willing to switch with me for December 10 or 17? I would really, really appreciate it. Thanks!!

Hi all. I met a couple girls on an interview yesterday who are interviewing at Yale and Howard. I don't know the details (dates offered, interview dates, etc) but just thought people would like to know in case they were still hoping to hear from those programs.

However, I also got 2 interviews earlier this week from programs that sent out their interviews a while ago (UPitt and UMich). They must have had people cancel or something. So don't give up hope yet if you haven't gotten some interviews you wanted!

I agree with Sweet Toof.. UNLESS you're on the wait list and a spot opens up. Most programs will not tell you if you're on their wait list or not, so keep your fingers crossed and hopes high! :xf:

My own story: I was on a wait list and didn't know it until 2 days before the last interview date offered (I even got a rejection letter from this school!) when someone dropped out. I rushed right over to interview.... and ended up matching! Needless to say, I saved that rejection letter and will one day frame it next to my certificate as a testiment to the power of hope. :D

Attire for social night.. I have worn jeans, with a dressy shirt/sweater and shoes but only after making a quick informal call to someone at the program's administrative office, asking what attire was acceptable. When in doubt- Biz Casual!

Hey guys, I applied to a handful of programs but had not heard anything in either the positive or the negative from any of them. While, I realize this is not a good sign since so many of you are doing so well, but is it normal not to at least receive rejection notices? Do you recommend calling the programs?

Did you get any feedback saying they had recieved your app? I don't think a phone call would hurt! :xf:

Yale sent out an e-mail about 2 Fridays ago with two possible dates. I had to say no to both of them :-(. Why do they all schedule their interviews for the same days?!?!?!?!

I know you won't like my answer, but it's 100% true. Reputation doesn't matter. Training does matter, to an extent, but all programs will immerse you in the things you need to know to be successful. It's up to you to learn those things, however. In a very real sense you'll get out of residency what you put into it.

For example, I did literally 4 oral sedations in my program (brand new program). Some might say that would make me afraid to do them in practice, or that I wouldn't know what I was doing. In private practice I do 4-5 oral sedations each day, and have since I graduated. To me not doing hundreds of them didn't matter. I did do over 80 general anesthesia cases, which helped tremendously. So reputation doesn't matter and most lack of training can be overcome by hard work and dedication. Remember that all programs have minimum training requirements (but some are obviously better than others.)

To your question: I'd skip schools that require tuition. BU charges a zillion dollars and accepts a zillion residents.
