I was told by one interviewer and then also my program director here that most places interviewed more applicants this year-sort of universally for a lot of reasons that make perfect sense.
My mentor is a former fellowship PD and he said those emails saying a program is your top choice can help at smaller programs with less spots. But he also says to be careful what you email because if you don’t end up matching somewhere that it’s a small field and your future colleagues wouldn’t want to be mislead.

Makes sense! Recently heard that it’s kind of variable...some places interviewed more, some the same, but would make sense to interview more people considering this year.
