Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Interview Thread 2022-2023

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys. I hope the season is going well for you all and getting good invites. My question is related to invitations, I have invites and the number is not a concern but I haven't heard from places I would want to match like Texas. Do you guys think that this was the end of the first wave and we should expect more invites esp from bigger programs? Thanks!
With virtual interviews, I don’t think there will be separate waves. The reality is, most interviews have gone out. It is possible that some more could trickle in, but I’m not counting on it.

Texas Children’s is number one for a reason, and they get to be picky because of it.

There’s some invites that I’m sad I didn’t get, and some I’m not the most thrilled about. I get it! Can November 30 come sooner? Lol

Has anyone gotten a response to an interest email? I sent one to a program that I don’t believe has sent out invites yet or was on the later end. Just wondering what ppl have received if anything. Thanks!

I have emailed 4 PDs expressing my interest and updating my application when I got an abstract accepted for a conference … one PD replied that they will update the application ( i didnt get an interview from that program), I got a reply from the coordinator of another program and havent heard from the other 2

End of the day is that you have nothing to lose, especially if you could express sincere interest in the program with some strong ties to the area

What programs are missing from the rolling list of interviews? I’m trying to gauge if there are anymore interviews that will be sent out

outside of that initially reported Stanford invite on 7/29, has anyone else heard either way from them? Still haven't heard anything, though I am assuming it's a no this late in the season.

Has anyone had success with a faculty member reaching out to a program on your behalf? Wondering if it’s too late in the season or it’s worth a try..

I am not sure if I would describe it the same way you did, but definitely utilizing my network helped me a ton, like talking to people who knows people in specific programs… at least it gave me the chance to get my application reviewed twice as I got rejected from some programs even after having more than one senior faculty members speaking about me 😁

Is it possible to match with three interviews? I am really having a hard time this year, i am so disheartened with my experience. This is my second year applying for the match, last year wasn’t great with no invites from nice places but i still had a bigger rank list ; this year i have only had three part of which is explained because of my history of having to switch programs and repeat third year. At this point i am just hoping to match and it seems unlikely with three interviews; one of which just seemed like a mercy interview, so effectively only two.

Technically you only need one interview! Give your best on your interviews and let the programs know that you want their program!

Has anyone received any communication hinting that they will match you from any program?

Any IMG’s matching to good programs? This was my second year following the match and i see how difficult it is for even qualified imgs with research and all to break the ceiling to match to good programs like Texas or Boston and states like California etc. they shun us like lepers. I don't how i will reconcile with this treatment and possibly work in these very same places in the future, if an opportunity arises.

One of my residency classmates is an IMG that matched to one of those places. They had interviews at all the top places. It comes down to connections, connections, connections.

I would have to disagree with the above messages respectfully. For starters I did not match as an img. I know of many brilliant people who matched to amazing places as an img and have worked tremendously hard and have amazing credentials to get to the position they are in. From a personal perspective at some point you just have to realize that you have an awful lot of deficiencies and are not good enough…something that should make you work harder. Kudos and congratulations to everyone who matched it’s the reward to your hard work. Best wishes.

What exactly are these programs looking at? I have seen people with very specific research, published authors, research awards in cardiology not making it to CHOP Boston or CHLA and the like. I have a fair amount of all the above I mentioned but two years in a row i wasn’t able to get any attention from any of these programs and matched to really similar predictable img heavy programs in unfavorable geographic locations. I really believe contacts do play a role in getting you to places. And IMG’s are still shunned by these places, if you see at the advanced fellowship when the pool narrows down even more then the img presence at Boston Colorado etc goes up significantly. They really don’t look at the img applications unless they don’t have an option.

An IMG here, I had USMLE attempts and a very long story … I matched into a program that I never dreamed that they will even look at my application!

I would have to disagree with what you said here, I was reviewing the Cardiology match thread last year and I remember seeing that you matched somewhere that you didn’t like and I got surprised when I saw that you were participating in this cycle!
While I dont know what is your story and can not make any assumptions… but what I can say from my personal experience is that yes the system would favor AMGs over IMGs when it comes to desired fields in desired places, I don’t think by no means it is related to program leaders biases but look at it in this way:

AMGs are more likely to go for residency in university programs, university programs usually have in-house fellowships which means better opportunities for networking and being involved in research projects

AMG gets introduced to the concepts of researches and conferences before they even start their residency so they are by default way ahead in terms of distance crossed before applying to fellowship

They get more chance to prove themselves for well connected people within the field who can write strong LORs and make phone calls

Also bigger programs would rather have trainees coming from bigger residencies ( easier to know their track records in terms of performance and achievements as well as less cultural challenges when compared to IMGs) … to get into a big residency usually you have to go to a US medschool which can mean about 500k in debt ( which most of non Caribbean schools IMGs dont have to worry about)

So while the path for AMGs may offer “more” opportunities it definitely comes with a price!!

On the other hand: IMGs are likely to go to community programs for residency, most of these programs barely have 1 inhouse cardiologist who isnt well connected beyond the local healthcare network and usually will have more clinical than academic duties ( academic projects requires higher volume which may not be offered in most of the community programs), which will impact who will write your LORs and LORs are very very important for peds cardiology fellowship regardless of where you went for med school

Add to that the fact that it isn’t easy to know much about foreign graduates prior to their US residency and that really makes difference

Not to mention the hassle of going through the visa process and home sickness in a pretty busy and critical fellowship

As a foreign graduate who is on a visa, I really think that the key for all of us is to understand what we are signing up for and how program leaders take their decision and take the idea of everyone being against IMGs out of our minds because this isnt the case…. If a foreign graduate really want to make it into one of the big programs, they should be willing to pay the price and work on fulfilling the points that I mentioned above, that may mean waking up before 4 AM on multiple days, getting used to be rejected on multiple occasions and showing up, doing away rotations which will cost you extra money and possibly vacation days! willing to do extra work and being put on spot ( people will test you) and getting comfortable with it and last but not the least is being ready identify opportunities and take them!

At the end I want to say that it isn’t about the program as much as its about you, you can get the best out of your program and become a great physician wherever you go, It looks like you got an opportunity in a medium program ( that you arent very happy with) but now it is up to you to get the best out of the opportunity you got!

Congratulations to all and best of luck to all of us

Very well said!! Agree 100%!!
You can get the best out of any program be it in fellowship or residency. I am an IMG, doing my residency in a medium size community program. I matched to my top choice for peds cards this year.
I have seen many IMGs who have worked hard and are at very top academic institutions in good positions. Nothing is impossible!
Congratulations everyone.

I had to get a waiver last year as i could not graduate because i had to take a break right after fellowship results came out and so I reapplied this year.
I have matched to a university programs 2 fellows per year, so i guess small.
I have done my residency at a university program as well.
I have over 10 publications and AAP young investigator awards, Institutional research awards, decent usmle scores without attempts.

I know a handful of IMG’s who had cv like me and better , and they had the same experience of matching to mediocre places like me.

Note : i am talking about reputed storied places like CHoP, Boston, CHLA only. I am not talking about matching to any university program and the next point is about favorable geographic location like DC, California, major metro area like Boston, SA, LA.

Everything you said is what i have done, having done research before residency i was way ahead than most applicants , except that I didn’t have connections, or people calling for me.

I’m talking about majority of IMG’s and the trend of IMG concentration in places like Detroit, Iowa and the likes.

Of course very few IMG match to top programs, i know an img each from Baylor , Boston and CHOP. I know one at baylor , what he did and how he made it there, others i have no idea, i know them closely and they didn’t have any such thing on their CV or an away rotation or anything at those places.

Also I wasn’t expecting anything better this year anyways, because last year as a fresh applicant I wasn’t able to make it and this year as someone with interruption in residency I wasn’t even thinking of getting any interviews from those places. I’m very realistic , it’s just that having gone through the personal experience of not even getting interviews from any of these places after writing to them and seeing other IMG’s it’s hard to ignore.
And having a debt doesn’t mean AMG’s should get better opportunities when they’re not as qualified as an IMG. Student loan is beyond the scope of this discussion. Life as an immigrant is hard , and it’s harder in small town US, I know I deserved better, but it is what it is.

Obviously you checked all the boxes and I believe that you did better than most of the people you know… I believe you should be very proud of what you have accomplished, if you keep up the same motive you will definitely do way better than most of the fellows

Most of the programs take 2 fellows/year, and most of those get filled with AMGs as IMGs are a minority in Cardiology

I dont know how it works in your home country, I had some experience in different healthcare systems before moving into the states and it is yet to see a system that prefers foreigners over locals, at the end of the day foreigners are being accepted to make up for the physicians scarcity ( which is more evident in less desired areas) and this is something that we are all aware of and signed up to

It is indeed very heart breaking when you feel that you didn’t get what you deserve especially after working very hard for it but definitely you can make the best out of what you have

Best of luck to all of us again
