Me too, but from what I've heard from NjDO0, those hospital affiliations at CCOM can't be beat!

Sure they can, about 150 medical schools across the country do it every year, and turn out very competent physicians.

well that was just one team, the first years team. I think the second year team did better. We didn't have much of a selection, but we did have some really good players (not me). They put me in as a DE and, if you ever meet me, I am not built to be a DE by any means. I did get some sacks and even broke up the last play for our last win (go Jamey), however.

Never mind! If I even tried to play ultimate with all you youngsters I'd be in the hospital with something broken after about 10 minutes!....

Plus you know I want to go there...You are THE BEST!! Gee thanks! ;)
Talked with them and even sent me an email. This was their response:

Dearest beloved and handsome jbone (student of the year);) ,

In the future, if students ask, you can let them know that all accepted students are eligible for departmental scholarships. Decisions are made by the faculty, and the scholarships are awarded from the Dean’s office. We just get notification from the Dean’s office when a scholarship has been awarded. There really isn’t anything that the students need (or can) do in regards to these internal scholarships. There are no applications – just decisions made by the faculty. Since the faculty decides on these, I'm not sure how long it takes for them to make decisions. Sorry, I'm not much help in that area. You may check with Jamie Rehmann in Admissions to see if she has a better time line for you.

Have a good day!

There you have it. I would contact Jamie regarding scholarships for new students. I've annoyed enough people for one day, but what else is new.

Wow you really ARE the best - rumors were true!
Thanks! I'm sure that helps many of us 2011's!

dang it orthodoc, you have me pegged as some super CCOM advocate.

Thanks for the scholarship information jbone. :)

I electronically sent my Grand in and mailed off my conditions letter...now its time to put the studying mode in "C" gear and cruise to graduation.:D

I interviewed 11-01, was accepted a week later. Still riding the fence between DMU and KCUMB, but definately leaning toward DMU. Anyone with similar experience care to comment/lend advice?

Hey mac,

I'm in the same situation. But I am leaning towards DMU as well. I just had that "feeling" at DMU. I felt as though I could fit in there. I honestly feel that we can't go wrong between KCUMB and DMU in terms of our future careers. They both are great schools, and I feel that where you are most comfortable is the place that will help advance your goals the most.

Just a friendly reminder:
Those accepted before November 15 have until December 15 to put down a deposit. Looks like you better hurry up and decide before Friday, Dr Mac.

I didn't apply to KCUMB, but from what I have heard on the interview trail they have a great program. So either way, DMU/KCUMB, you won't be making a bad choice. Go with your gut feeling.

Didn't apply to KCUMB but see on these forums many who have had a very tough time chosing b/w these 2 schools in particular. It's up to you, of course - good luck! :luck:

Don't have to remind those of us who need to decide asap, Boner! It has been a tough time trying to make up my mind b/w DMU & UMDNJ!!

You guys know if there are any skiing or snowboarding places near DMU? I know its pretty flat. Just thought I would ask.

Ok, being from SLC (Utah) surrounded by gorgeous snow-capped mountains and 15+ ski resorts within 25 minutes from my house this part is a little disappointing. There apparently IS a resort an hour or two away but I have heard it isn't anything to write home about. Can anyone help me on this one??
Sucks for me since I started skiing out of the womb. Anyway, the do a big ski trip every year here. This year, they (students) are taking a bus (13 hours) back to Colorado and spending some time there hitting the slopes. They worked out some deal with the resort and they are getting a pretty sweet deal. Only problem is...it's Colorado.

Anyone else here thinking of buying a domicile in Des Moines? Been looking into purchasing a nice townhome in Urbandale, Johnston or West Des Moines. Anyone else in the same boat or have any input?

The skiing around DSM is a little interesting. There actually are three places w/in an hour drive (Boone, Fun Valley, and one in Des Moines). The one in DSM doesn't really count since I think it is all rope tows & I don't think they make much snow.
There are also another couple places w/in about two hours that are better than Boone & Fun Valley. Nothing near Colorado type hills, but hopefully enough to give you your fix.

Actually, my fiance and I were actually discussing this. I can't decide if it would be wise or not. I mean financially it is, but time wise and the energy it takes for upkeep is it worth it? Especially if rotations are going to be all over?

We had thought this through as well, which is why we were leaning towards a townhome; you pay your association fee and they take care of exterior maintenance. As far as rotations, we'll try for Des Moines, but if it doesn't go our way, I heard other sites in Iowa have free housing. Also, there is the prospect of renting to lower classmen to cover the mortgage.

But is that a risk factor you want to play with while you (for us, we) are taking a full medical school education load? I figure, and I hope, that the education I am going to recieve will give me an ample chance to make the moeny needed so that I don't need to take out risky investments during school. ***I am not going into medicine for the money at all! However, you do have to expect to make enough to pay back all your debt plus live.

While in Des Moines or the area, the money alloted for housing will more than cover our mortgage. Furthermore, if we do have to move post-grad we can sell the sucker. 4 or 5 years is time, at least in our eyes, to build decent, but not stellar, equity. If anything, we'll build up our credit and break even, thus getting our investment returned. Better case, we make a profit and start to pay off student loans. According to some research I have done, 4 years is enough to at least turn a small profit on a home within our price range and parameters (i.e. down-payment, interest, etc...). Gotta head to work, but will discuss more later.

Just gave DMU 500 bones. Merry Christmas to me?

OK, so here's a little continuation from my previous post:
I'll be meeting with a mortgage specialist at my bank tomorrow to discuss the prospects of purchasing a home as a med student. I will post a detailed update for those with an interest in home ownership during school based on what I gather.

When you give them 50,000 bones it will be a merry chirstmas, happy holidays, now bend over, grab your ankles and pray to god. Not to be too graphic of course

Well I just coughed up my $500....

Anyone know if there is anywhere even CLOSE to New England a DMU student can do 3rd/4th year rotations that would be pretty good, too??

I'd ask that either in the self proclaimed super genious thread or the 2010 thread. I, for one, have no clue about New England. I know that I am looking to go back East (Ohio is a very good site).

Got a mortgage pre-approval this morning. Very exciting stuff. Brought in the COM student budget, acceptance letters and explained our situation to the mortgage officer. If you plan on doing this, make sure you have good credit because they will run a credit check on the spot to make sure you're on the up-and-up. M'lady and I don't have stellar credit, but average will do according to the mortgage guy. He also gave some advice to help improve our credit too. This was a smoother process than I thought and proves that home ownership can be a reality on two med student budgets. Feel free to PM me if you're thinking about buying in Des Moines. We'll be heading up sometime in February to house hunt.

Orthodoc...you decided! congrats! I really thought you were leaning UMDNJ but I'm sure you'll have great times at DMU.

Boner, a couple of my friends live about 10 miles from DMU near off of I-80 near altoona. I know the area is going up fast and the townhouses are really nice, two story ones. They put down a good chunk of change for the down payment, and now only have to pay $560/mo for the mortgage. I'm not sure what you are looking for exactly, but let me know if you want more info. Plus, my friends there are cool :)

Also, have any of you DMU 2011ers gotten anything in the mail since turning in the form and deposit? I called to make sure they received them, but do we receive any sort of packet or anything?

Are there any decent houses around the campus for about 100k?

The DMU website has good housing links & you can find homes & apartments through that. I found a house for $24,000.... Looked a little boarded up, but still! ;)

I PMed you, don't know how that works, so hopefully you got it.

It's true - I couldn't decide. How lame is that?! I never thought I would be one of THOSE people!! LOL!!
I sure don't want to start a poll, either... but, well....

I have to say it because I am from PA and was born in NY so we have this, as my parents call it, inborn sense of hate for Jersey. So, here it goes: DON'T GO TO THE ARMPIT OF AMERICA!!! Sorry...

Weird point: when I went to Sydney, my adivsor, who only knew about 1% of America, knew that New Jersey was the punch line of pretty much every joke about the States. Random, I know, but she was hot and had that accent...oooo

Ha ha - well I just remember Dave Letterman's Top 10 Reasons Boston is better than NY and one of the top 3 was "Because it's farther from NJ!"

Did you know it is actually the richest state in the U.S.? What is the ironic part about that statment is that Camden is the poorest city hahaha.

Has anyone recieved their login/password to the DMU portal yet?

I have not. I don't think they will release those until after Dec. 15th (tomorrow) when they have all the first round deposits and withdraws.

Also, any golfers in the c/o 2011?

Ah yes i love to golf, but haven't gotten to do it very often since moving to the twin cities. It's a lot more expensive up here than it used to be back in iowa. I hear there are some good courses in the DM area

Yeah, I'm in a similar situation. I haven't played much since I moved to the Washington DC area. Its super expensive here, and I have no car. I played for 4 years in high school. What do you shoot? I usually shoot between 78 and 85 for par 72 course.

Iowa has more golf courses per/capita (?) than any other state in the US. FYI, and it's really cheap. Just wanted to let you know.

Going back to the whole DMU portal discussion: do any current first years know, historically, when we get our portal IDs and whatnot? When should we expect some communication from DMU other than, "send more money," or, "we got yo' money?"

I can't remember the exact date, but the last email I have from DMU, is dated for 5/24 and was asking me to do the background check. In that it said I should have already gotten my password. Sorry, you forget that stuff pretty quick ahah.

Guys, I called the school a few days ago & asked them to send me the 2006 Match list. It's tough as a premed to accurately assess a match list because you don't know say, what hospital has the top EM residency, but what different hospital has the top anesthesia residency, etc... A well known hospital doesn't always mean a top program. Knowing therefore, that I don't know so much about what I'm looking at - I'm still pretty impressed with this list!!! It seems better than the one posted on their website, I think.

I bought a house when I started school. If you're not from the midwest you will be shocked at how cheap housing can be. You will find lots of houses in the 60-75k that look nice in the pictures, but in person you see the details the thumbnails didn't show on some of them. As you look around, there are several things to look for rather than if you like the color of the trim. You could get a big surprise when you find out how much more a poorly insulated house will cost you in the winter. If you have any questions, message me and I'll share what I know.

I would contact Jamie regarding scholarships for new students. I've annoyed enough people for one day, but what else is new.

Last year I believe the Dean's and President's scholarship notices went out the first week of March or so. I think there were 2 halfs, 1 whole and several quarter scholarships. If a "fencesitter" jumps off the DMU split-rail after then, they will pass it on down.

I've talked to applicants that got offers right after their acceptances. But they were interviewed early. Dunno what stats it takes to warrant consideration now but I'm guessing low 30's with >3.5 as class stats have been going up every year. (As have test averages)

Unsolicited but likely welcome advice follows: Try to have some freakin' fun this next summer before class starts. Class isn't all that overwhelming after the first month or so, but it still seems like a long haul. Try some study technique other than cramming, which ends up sucking hard when you have ~seven or eight tests in 3 weeks. Find a mentor in the 2010 class to let you know what to expect and talk you down when you get all flipped out from stress. (It happens to everybody, no kiddin') -Out.:D

Hey all you newly endowed DMU-ites! I'm a 3rd year at DMU and my wife and I have a townhouse that we bought before our first year that we are looking to sell. It is in West Des Moines on Grand Ave, which means it is about a 12 min straight shot from school. I'm just seeing what kind of response I can get from this post. We are looking to sell it for $115,000. PM me if you are interested!

Wow, 78 on a par 72 is pretty impressive. Back when I golfed quite a bit I would start about shooting 105-110 the first few times in the spring ;) then work my way down to about a consistent 85-90 by the end. I wish I could golf more...I think my best is about 81

Nice work, I was the same way. Only way to get better is to play!

Such extremes!! I just don't know if I can voluntarily move to a place where I will be surrounded by Yankees fans... :barf:
