Good luck, Orthodoc! I'm sorry that I won't have the chance to meet you next year, but it sounds like you made a really good choice for yourself and your family. Wishing you strength and peace in this next year.

Did anyone else see somewhere on portal that the first tuition payment is due 8/7 while the loans aren't disbursed until 8/9?

The 8/9/07 date is for financial aid refunds. The actually financial aid disbursement is on 8/3/07. So, on the 9th you will get any money that is left over after your tuition and fees are paid on the 7th.
Hope that helps.

1. Ortho, I think you've made the right decision. Good luck at UMDNJ and keep in touch.

2. Shouldn't we be able to sign up for health insurance now? I couldn't find any new links on the portal to do so.

3. Now seems to be a good time to cruise ebay for diagnostic kits. I just picked up a 3.5v Welch Allyn oto/opthalmoscope set for $80 (retails for ~$400) from a graduating med student. Looks like a bunch of graduating students are unloading equipment they won't need, so keep an eye out if you're looking to save some money on this stuff, cause it's gonna be expensive.

hey guys,
im sitting on the alternate list and am going nuts. i would love to attend dmu. i have called them to find out how many people have been taken off, but they can't give me an exact number. i was just told there have been a 'handful'.

can we start a list of people offered a spot from the list and if they are attending or not??

Hey Mike, sit tight. I was taken off the list last week and i'm sure they'll take more off the closer we get to orientation. Just hang in there. Good luck.

I got off of the waitlist on 5/25 and will be attending DMU. It was tough to say no to the school I assumed I would go to, but DMU was my top choice. Can't wait to get started!

Thanks Boner. I'm not sure it's the right decision at all, but I will have to live with it now! You are going to have a GREAT class, and I will miss being part of it, for sure!

Thanks for the tip on ebay stuff. Good luck everyone!

I, too, am sitting in the top quartile of the waitlist. I'd love to go, so hopefully they'll e-mail us soon. Orthodoc, did you send in your withdrawal by e-mail or snailmail? If people are doing it by snailmail, it will probably delay the process by a few days due to the mail system. Then, they may have to have a meeting or something to decide who gets accepted... Hmmm... Could be a while?

I think official withdrawals have to be written and signed and sent my snailmail. So hang in there guys and good luck to those still waiting.

I just called & talked to Danessa. She said I didn't need to write anything.

There's a new gourmet food market a few blocks from school called Gateway Market. They should have a lot of Asian specialty products you probably wouldn't find at Dahl's.

Having only a 2% asian population, don't count on Ranch 99 (if you live in SJ) or many other asian markets. I did find a few. Here's one that I found.

Anyone looking for a place to live:

Another first year and I have a 3br. in the 3000 Grand(1-2 minute walk from campus) and our third person just bailed on us.

If anyone wants to live with us in one of the 2 closest possible places to campus, message me or email me at [email protected]. The place is really nice, and rent will only be $408/mo w/o utilities.

Hey NJDOO,

I just came back from a three week long hiatus overseas (Philippines) so I am a little behind on everything right now, not to mention all of the class thread posts:laugh:, but my question was about the availability of the grand apartments, I am actually moving with my gf (who is looking to do some graduate work at drake), so i am just wondering if there are more spots open or going to open, I will probably call in the next few days and will be going down to des moines probably in the next week or two.

I emailed them earlier last month and they said they usually have 2bedroom available when school starts. Just email them or call

hey killa-

Yeah to what lovable said, but if I remember right, you posted before about dogs and I'm fairly sure that the 3000 doesn't allow them. Cats are ok I think

Hi all,

I'm currently waitlisted in the top quartile at DMU for 2011, and I called them to ask what I could do to improve my application for next year in the event that I don't get in and need to reapply. The one thing that stood out to them in my app was that I did not have a long term experience in a situation where I was directly working in patient care or directly shadowing a doctor. I did a lot of volunteer work such as patient transport in a hospital and working the front desk at a free clinic, and I shadowed a couple of D.O.s for a few days. But they really wanted to see me do some extended shadowing, for a few months or a year or something. In Washington State where I live, there are lots of patient privacy laws and stuff called HIPAA, so the doctors I did shadow said from the beginning they'd only let me shadow for a couple of days due to the risk of violating those, liability, etc.

So, my question is to those of you who were accepted: How did you garner the first-hand experience needed to fully articulate your motivation to go into medicine? How did you fully realize all of the pros and cons? And did you have to have some special family connection or something to find a doctor to let you do extended shadowing? All of my friends who have done it have found a doctor through their family or something, but I have no such connection. Are there other ways to get this experience, like through working as a type of med tech or in clinical research, or something else I'm not thinking of? Basically, I have no idea where to go from here!

Thanks for your input everyone!

Thanks!

For me, I went to my hometown hospital or hospital near school and asked to volunteer in the pediatric floor or emergency deparment. Some hospitals need you to dedicate certain amount of time volunteering around the hospital first before you can go into ER. I like to volunteer in the hospital better because you would get more patient contacts then at local doctor offices.

my 2cents:D

I volunteered at my local hospital for a total of a 100 hours. I basically performed the same task you did ie transport patients, ran bloodwork, etc. I also shadowed several ER docs, observed a surgery (which was pretty cool), and shadowed an OMM specialist. I basically went to the AOA website and searched docs in my area. I went ahead and called each one and asked if they allowed students to shadow. That's basically it. None of these were very long term, maybe 10-15 hours for the ER and OMM docs. However, what I did get from them that I think was very important for my file was that I got the ER doc and OMM specialist to write me a letter of recommendation. I don't know exactly what they put but I'm sure it was positive because DMU took me off the waitlist.

So maybe you can contact whoever you shadowed and ask for a LOR. Also if you can get a LOR from the hospital you volunteered from. Hopefully this can get you off the waitlist. Good luck.

Hi StaryMagic,

I spent the past two years working as a research/lab tech in a Clinical Rheumatology Lab at Children's Hospital in Seattle, WA. In addition to shadowing physicians, I also volunteered in the Burn ICU at Harborview Med Center for 100+ hours. The Burn ICU gave me some AWESOME patient/family contact. Working as a transport, you don't have the same opportunities - i.e. assisting during burn dressing changes, turning patients, talking to patients & their families/making them more comfortable, setting up patient rooms, and listening to report/rounds. I would recommend you volunteer in an emergency department, ICU, or clinic where you can get more one-on-one patient contact. (BTW - you typically have to be 21 to work in these environments.)

Like you, I also had no family connections to draw from, but instead forged relationships with the doctors at my workplace and shadowed them while they went to clinic. Also being from WA, I know how tough the HIPAA/privacy laws are here and how frustrating it is when doctors don't want to have people shadow them long-term. My suggestion to this is to ask if you can go once a week for a longer period of time. That way you aren't seeing the same patients every day and you can still gain the experience/get to know the physician.

Remember... you WANT that strong LOR from your healthcare experience. I hope that helps!

I started off volunteering in the ER, and while that was fantastic, I didn't really have alot of direct patient contact. A year ago I got hired as a hemodialysis technician. I honestly think having that job got me into DMU. Aside from the VA, every dialysis unit around her (I'm in Oregon) is looking for techs; I'm sure Washington is the same. Most places will train you on the job. And while you might not have any interest in nephrology or dialysis, you will learn an incredible amount. Not to mention you could have LORs from several people. I had the PA that rounds at our unit and the Director of Nursing write one for me. Although, if I didn't get in this year, both the MDs that own the clinic offered to write me one as well. It's not for everyone, but it certainly is a good in.
Just a suggestion!

1st time posting in the forum. I will be joining all of you this fall and my wife and I are so happy to be moving to Des Moines. We will be moving out from Vancouver Wa., so we in for a 1500 mile drive with 2 kids, 2 english mastiffs, 4 fish and a hamster.

Looking forward to meeting you all. It looks like we will have a great class.

Tennisgal- if ya need your bike brought out and you can get it down to Vancouver we will have plenty of room in the trailer we are renting and would be happy to transport it for you.

And since you alll are keeping track of the cyclists vs. tennis players, add one more to the cyclist list!!

Cya in a few weeks!!

Welcome 10yearmedic

My gf and I got you beat on your 1500 mile drive. We're doing 2200 miles from the bay area. We also have 3 guinea pigs (with one a wee bit overweight). But having 2 kids, 2 dogs, and a fish sure sounds like a lot of fun...."are we there yet?...are we there yet? good luck. all you need now is a partridge in a pear tree (however that goes). Good luck and see you in August.

10yearmedic-

Welcome and glad to have ya!

whatdapho-

you definitely beat him on the mileage but it would take about 150 guinea pigs to equal the size of those mastiffs:p

Thanks NJDOO and Lovable, I think a nice and convenient place goes above pets but if we could get both that would be even better.

As for my healthcare experience, I started volunteering in the ER of a local hospital, and I have been there for over 3 years. It did help that my mom used to work there in the ER and ICU so a lot of people on the staff knew her, so it made me feel more comfortable in the beginning. But I would suggest signing up for a volunteer program (which many hospitals have), because those tend to be more long term and often on a schedule, as oppose to shadowing doctors who can limit your time or even on some cases maybe too busy for you.

I also welcome all those taken off the waitlist and looking forward to seeing everyone this fall:thumbup:

Well... I'm off on a California road trip for two weeks with my best friend! Talk to you guys when I get back!

Just FYI, we can enroll for health insurance on the portal now.

Man, I can't wait to stop working and have some down time. The day after my wife and I stop working we're flying to Vegas for some vacation. Then making the 1200 mile drive to DSM. Can't wait

Is anyone in Des Moines right now? If anyone is interested, I have 2 tickets to the Principal Golf Classic at Glen Oaks Country Club that someone can have. The tournament started today w/ a Pro-Am but starts tomorrow & goes through Sunday. The passes are good for any day.

I can't really take that much time out of studying for boards to go, but it is a PGA Champions Tour event & are usually some pretty decent players. PM me if anyone is interested.

I'm not from Seattle or Washington but my gf and I are going their for vacation before school starts. We'll be there mid-July. Any suggestions on great places to eat and sites to see? We'll be there for 4 days so any suggestions would be appreciated.

3 more weeks of work and no more retail work....FOREVER!!!!!!!....hopefully

See you guys in August.

lol. everybody is finishing their jobs, and my summer job just started last week.

i'm so glad that I quit my job at home depot pushing darn carts all day. now a few more weeks making smoothies at jamba juice and I will consider myself a free man from the all too dreaded hourly job. it was so ironic that i had a job pushing carts yet in a few months would be attending medical school. i'm sooooooooooo done with it. i just want to start school now:eek:

So our class is going to be around 200+ students and I don't know about you guys but I don't think I'll be able to meet every single student and become close friends. However, I do want to have a close group of COM friends and I think the best place to start is here on SDN. So I'll just introduce myself first. My name is Paul Nguyen and i'm from San Jose, CA. You can check out my myspace page at myspace.com/red_finger_tips. I look forward to meeting you guys this July/August over a pizza pie and pitcher of beer. SYL

that's so kool tennisgal! which part of California will you be visiting? make sure to visit the beaches...:D

Greetings from the road! We've been travelling the entire state down the Pacific Coast Highway, stopping at many beaches and breathtaking views of the California coast. Hopefully these pictures will get me through a couple of years in Iowa. ;) Currently, we are in LA to visit Hollywood (we have to do some touristy stuff) and then it's down to San Diego, back up to Disneyland, through Yosemite, and we'll slowly begin working our way back to Seattle. Ah... I love vacation. :D

I'm not from Seattle or Washington but my gf and I are going their for vacation before school starts. We'll be there mid-July. Any suggestions on great places to eat and sites to see? We'll be there for 4 days so any suggestions would be appreciated.

You should really visit Pike Place, and not just the top floor! There are many lower floors with some really fun shops/sights that give Pike Place its flavor. (Watch out for the world-famous flying fish!) The shops across from Pike Place are also a lot of fun (my favorite is the map store) and the first Starbucks is also at Pike Place. Lots of history there. Other suggestions (not in order):

1) Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe on the waterfront, in fact, just walk the waterfront! There are tons of restaurants/fun little places to poke in and out of. While you're there, eat at Ivar's fish bar, a Seattle classic. Also, walk on/ride the ferry to Bainbridge Island/Winslow if you have the time. At the north end of the waterfront is the new Sculpture Park, with some awesome views of Puget Sound/city skyline if you have the time to visit.

2) Alki beach (the one made famous by Sleepless in Seattle) - it is in West Seattle. You'll have stunning views of the city skyline, can rent skates/bikes (or walk) if you want to travel up & down it, and there are a ton of little galleries and cheaper waterfront restaurants to visit.

3) Seattle Center/Space Needle... If you want to ride up the Space Needle it does offer some amazing views of the city, but it is a little expensive. A nice alternative is to visit the parks on Queen Anne Hill and get the view from there (much cheaper, plus you can visit the fun/quaint shops). Fun things to do at Seattle Center: Experience Music Project (the weird-ass looking building built as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix, it's supposed to be a drum set and instruments covered with drapes, but I can't see it), the Pacific Science Center (they have an amazing IMAX theater there that often plays blockbusters as well as typical IMAX movies), the Science Fiction Museum, the Fountain. (The Seattle Center House has a ton of food options if you want to grab something and go.)

4) The Seattle Art Museum just reopened (AKA SAM), I haven't been yet but my friends say it is pretty cool. If you continue south on 1st avenue you'll eventually run into Pioneer Square. If you want to do any touristy things, this is probably where you'll start. The Ducks go by here (tour buses that travel on land & by water), and it is also the home of the Underground Tour, which literally gives you an underground look at old Seattle (and is usually pretty funny!).

5) For animal lovers, the Woodland Park Zoo is a great place to visit. (It is in Fremont/Wallingford, at the north end of the city along higway 99. It's only ~6-7 blocks from my apartment!) If you are in this area and want to see a place made famous by the movie "Ten Things I Hate About You", visit Gas Works park. It also offers great views of downtown Seattle.

6) If you are at all interested in a great walking/running/hang out place, definitely visit Greenlake. This is a local hot spot and full of great restaurants (I mean it, you can't really pick a bad restaurant here! My favorite it the Green Lake Grill.). Take a walk around the lake at sunset, trust me, you won't be disappointed. I LOVE running there. It is a place you can escape the city for a while. You can also rent skates/kayaks here if you wish.

7) For a quirky experience, visit University Ave in the University District. (There are a ton of random shops there and some cheap/fun places to eat, it's a college area, enough said) or Capitol Hill (same thing, less college).

8) If you are interested in getting out on the water, you can go to UW stadium and rent kayaks to explore Lake Washington surrounding the campus. My family & I used to do this all of the time when I was a little kid. Consequently, if you are interested in seeing lots and lots of boats, visit Golden Gardens Park/Shilshole Marina and the Locks in Ballard.

9) If you are interested in a great hike that gives you some stunning views of Puget Sound, visit Discovery Park in Magnolia. (Bring some sandals, you can go out on the beaches there at low tide!)

10) South Lake Union is another up and coming area with a ton of restaurants and great views of the lake/boats/sea planes taking off and landing. Some of my favorite restaurants in this area are: Duke's Chowderhouse, McCormick and Schmidts (GREAT happy hour), the Blue Water Bistro.

11) Finally, if you want to see a flick or take it easy for a while, the Westlake Mall/Pacific Place area of downtown offers a lot of shopping and a ton of restaurants to anyone's taste. I honestly don't have a favorite.

OK, I need to stop. (As you can tell, I could go on forever.) I know you can't do all of this in 4 days, but you should pick and choose what most interests you. Let me know if you want any other info! :D

(Can anyone tell I'm not ready to leave the West Coast yet? ;))

Thanks tennisgal for the info on Seattle. I'm glad you're enjoying your time in sunny California. Isn't it so great??!!! If you're looking for some restaurants in San Diego let me give you some idears.

If you're looking for some really good bbq and I mean really good bbq check out Phil's BBQ in Hillcrest, which is near downtown/San Diego Zoo. It has killer ribs and to die for onion rings (a must). If you want to check out New York style pizza on the west coast, check out Bronx Pizza which is in the same area as Phils (Hillcrest is the area with a lot of restaurants). Once you're done with all that you have to go to Extraordinary Desserts for ...you guessed it....dessert.

And if you want to check out the San Diego night life go to the Gaslamp Quarter which is basically in downtown San Diego.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me. Have fun and I'll see you in Aug.

Looks like I am going to be living on the 8th floor of 3000 Grand. I love the fact that it is so close to the school. Anybody else thinking or have already signed up to live there. It is a bit pricier ($860, 2 bedroom) than others but I didnt think the difference was large enough to outcompete the convenience and spaciousness of the apartments. Good luck to everyone else in finding a place.

I'll be living on the 2nd floor there and I think a couple more sdn'ers are looking. I'm super excited to not have to drive so much

lovable and i will be sharing a 3 bedroom with someone else :~) glad to see we're in good company
