Looking up all these programs/requirements on their own websites, AAPD, and ADEA, and any other place google brings up is horrrrrrrible....

I see some conflicting information for Stony Brook. Looks like some sites say they require "copy of diploma" now and other say its after acceptance. Also I SWEAR I saw that they listed a $100 supplemental fee but I cant find it now and nobody answers their phone, haha.

Anybody with any information?

In my experience, the most reliable program requirements info can be found on the adea pass page for that school, followed by ADEA and or the program’s website if it’s clear they’ve updated their page recently. The AAPD pages are good for general info about programs, less reliable for the program’s requirements. Also, if you have specific questions, you can email the contact listed on these pages, it’s usually the program coordinator.

How long have you been practicing? If it’s 2 years or more (at the time you apply for license), you could do license by “endorsement” (aka reciprocity).

Honestly I’m not an expert in NY licensure. But I believe you can use a limited license for residency.

How many schools do people usually apply to?

Depends on how competitive you are and how much you want to spend on application fees. I’ve heard as few as three and as many as 30.

If you have a really strong application, you might only apply to a few schools, confident you’ll get interviews there. If (like me) you aren’t a traditional competitive applicant, you’d apply to more. (Last year I applied to 21, got 3 interviews, matched.)

Yes, you can. Not doing a GPR doesn't affect your ability to apply to NYC Peds programs except Mt Sinai and Staten Island that require their applicants do a GPR first. When you're a resident in NYC, you'll work under your attending's license so they'll credential you for New York state specifically. The program usually takes care of it. You won't be able to moonlight though. Also after finishing a PGY-1 (aka your first year of peds residency) you can apply for a New York state license if you'd like, but you don't have to if you don't plan on moonlighting or sticking around New York after residency.

How do I submit a photocopy or a notarized copy of my dental school diploma to programs that require it? Should we submit it during the application process or is this a requirement after acceptance? Thanks in advance!!

The programs that I am applying to (that require it) just asked for a PDF.

However, I asked my notary friend and was told that a diploma original and copy and be brought in to a public notary and they will notarize the copy for you to send when they confirm it matches the original.

Confirm with the school if they need it before or after acceptance (most are after).

Some programs will specify that you send a jpeg to them directly. Otherwise, you can just put it on your CV/resume.

Check the PASS pages for the schools and call if they are not clear. I am going to send directly to the ones that specifically request it; however, I am placing a page at the end of my CV with a 2x2 style photograph.

I think Columbia says to put it in the right hand corner of the CV front page... I will probably just hope they see it at the end because I hate the way it looks at the top right.

I've heard both options from different schools! Some schools have made it pretty apparent on ADEA PASS search engine that they are fully planning to do in-person interviews, but I've also heard other schools hint that their program is planning on doing another year of virtual interviews. (Which, I realize, kind of answers nothing, haha). I think a lot of it will depend on what state each program is in, whether or not they're hospital-based / how strict the hospital is about visitors, etc. etc. etc. Who knows what will happen in the next few months!

I'm not putting it. I am only entering it in the school-specific questions when possible. Other schools don't really leave an area and I agree with you that the areas provided in PASS are too specific to put "virtual externship".

No, a lot of programs said yes to that. I believe it was just meant to imply that if you have futher questions about the requirements to contact the program or that there are more requirements but it’s only relevant if you match.

I think it depends on your personal preferences, some people perform better and are more comfortable on zoom, and likewise some are better in person, further it depends on if you are comfortable or not seeing the place to make a choice for ranking, I wouldn't worry too much about the money although it doesn't hurt to think save money, think about it this way, you already spend so much on the app process, and prospectively this could be where you live for the next two years, and learn arguably the most important part of your training, its an investment, and if seeing the place and spending the extra money helps you decide and get the best result its worth it imo, however, if you dont need to go, it is also good to save money, I liked zoom interviews, but seeing the physical clincs is nice as well

If I remember right, the ADEA has a section of their website that discusses the personal essay and it specifies that it should not be more than 5,200 characters (including spaces).

I uploaded mine in the section for unofficial transcripts. I have run into schools that require them to be sent directly after acceptance though...

But, if you are just applying to schools that do not require the transcripts then you wouldn't have to upload anything.

Background info - been a GP for 7 years now. Been gravitating towards Pedo through the years and I am just starting to look into the ADEA and all the different programs and requirements.

I would preferably like to stay in Houston unless another program is absolutely amazing and worth it.

I am trying to
1. parse through programs - is the best way to search programs and see their websites for what they offer? Most of them sound very similar in terms of experiences so I would rather get first hand knowledge from current residents. I tried seeing if there is any commentary on Houston Pedo school and didnt see anything so I wasnt sure if people talk about their respective residencies on here? (I know some residents may not want to share the not so good stuff since it may be traced back to them due to limited class sizes).
2. any non traditional applicants here? GP --> Pedo. Is that seen as a pro or con by schools? I would think real world experience would only be beneficial... but again, just testing the waters here!

Hi! I can't personally answer everything in your post - I'm a D4 at Texas A&M Baylor in Dallas, so I can't speak much to the resident/non-traditional perspective. BUT I do have some links you may find helpful!

I totally agree that after a while, a lot of the programs start to sound the same. Something that helped me differentiate between programs was to read through the CODA requirements for all pedo programs (https://www.ada.org/~/media/coda/files/ped.pdf?la=en). It was helpful to know the bare minimum requirements because I was then able to better realize which areas each program focuses on going above and beyond in.

Also, the AAPD website is a great resource as a centralized list of all of the pedo programs (AAPD | Residency Programs). While it isn't the most updated source out there, it still is helpful for getting a feel of which ones you may want to look more into (hospital vs university program, number of residents per class, stipend vs tuition, etc.).

Finally, here's a link to some of the programs who are hosting virtual externships and open houses at this time (AAPD | 2021 Virtual Open Houses and Externships). You can also reach out to programs that you're interested in learning more about and ask if they are offering any virtual events where you can learn more about their program. San Antonio is actually hosting a virtual externship this evening at 6:00 PM - you can register using the link they have posted (I don't think it's too late to register, but I could be wrong). When you click on the link, you'll see that there are a ton of great programs across the country offering virtual externship opportunities, as well! Also, TAMCOD here in Dallas has just recently started to offer in-person observation days on Thursdays and Fridays. So, if you are able to take a day or two off from work, it may be worth making the 3.5 hour drive up north. I hope this helps!

When it comes down to it though... I think that schools just want to have a 100% boards pass rate and they are going to put very heavy consideration on grades and scores. If you have great grades and scores from dental school AND experience working in peds, then you are in good shape I would bet.

Typically for pedo, if you have private practice experience, it usually benefits you! Especially for hospital based pedo programs, they are usually more clinical heavy so there's less time to sit there and teach you everything. I know my program usually wanted a nice balance of new and experienced grads.

I think Houston has a nice balance of didactic and clinical experience, lots of faculty members and of course the med center is a great resource. From what I can tell, most grads are well prepared for private practice. Did not go there for residency but for dental school so my perspective was mainly from my friends and being a dental student there.

I attached the PDF of my scores into the same document as my personal statement (so, first page is my PS and the second page is a printout of my DATs). I did well on the DAT but it looked REALLY weird putting in my CV. If I don't get an interview for not following directions then, oh well. If they want something specific they should add a section to upload it on their school specific section like all of the other schools do

Email the program coordinator and ask. Its pretty early in the application process and some may be busy with the incoming class/ graduating class.

Non-trad here. I have worked for 5 years post-dental school. I have been told that most programs like experience while there are some that have not accepted anyone that is not straight out of school or a residency program for years.

In a virtual externship this year I was told that work experience is something schools will consider specifically this year as a ton of students in dental school have very little patient care experience due to the pandemic (even more so when looking at care on pediatric patients specifically). According to threads from previous years, some schools will literally ask in interviews, "How many SSCs have you done?" "How many strip crowns have you done?" etc.

I think that the only way being a non-trad will be helpful is because 99% of the applicants are pretty much going to be in dental school or just graduated. It will give us something to talk about on the app and in an interview. Standing out even a little bit is what gets an interview (grades, experience, awards, LORs, etc). Once you have an interview its easy from there because you can sell yourself at the school (if that is what you're good at).

When it comes down to it though... I think that schools just want to have a 100% boards pass rate and they are going to put very heavy consideration on grades and scores. If you have great grades and scores from dental school AND experience working in peds, then you are in good shape I would bet.

Hey there,

Not sure what schools will consider. I know that students that had OK grades needed to make up for it in other areas of the application to be considered (extracurriculars, service, test scores, etc.). I just know that a few of the schools that have had information sessions have expressed that they like to have a high pass rate on the boards and previous performance is the best indicator of that.

I think that it would be smart to apply to some reach schools and then some schools that charge tuition (they are less competitive because more students are applying to programs that have a stipend to reduce their overall student debt). Some schools are also specific about who they take: Harvard and Columbia are clear on their websites that they are looking for students in the top 10% of their classes.

As for the ADAT, I did not take it. It had just come out when I was finishing dental school and there is no way that I would do well now that I have been removed from school for a bit. No time to study. And honestly, there are only very few select schools that require it, so I opted out of taking it. If you can get 90th percentile or higher on the test I think it would only help you.

This is all just my very singular point of view; hopefully some others will chime in and offer more info. Best of luck!

"The clinical training in pediatric dentistry program commences on July 1 and is preceded by several required orientation days. Early application is encouraged. The application deadline is September 2 of the preceding year.

Our highly competitive program attracts applicants who are in the top 10 percent of their dental school classes and score above 85 percent in Part I of the National Board of Dental Examiners Examination."

The NBDE comment is old because they don't score those anymore... And it is also weird wording when they say "attracts applicants who are in the top 10 percent". I guess take it for what it's worth

I don’t think you can apply without IEF from the school your graduated/ will graduate from. Most schools will complete IEF for residencies with an earlier deadline first and will get to the pediatric ones later in the cycle. Endo/ ortho/ pros/ anes and perio residencies take precedence before GPR, pedo and OMS I think. Your application on ADEA PASS will be not be ‘complete’ without an IEF. Email the ADEA PaSS helpdesk to confirm of this.

I am applying to 7 or 8 programs (haven't decided on one of them). I have not submitted yet... But I will be submitting in the next week. Have everything done and most letters in, I just don't trust by ability to upload things correctly or spell things right. So, I am reading through everything a few times before I press submit

Weird question... But, is anybody avoiding any peds programs based on their own experience or second hand stories?

Please feel free to private message me if you don't want to post on the board. I just want to make sure I don't have any programs on my list that have big issues that they hide well, haha!
