programs usually dont spend a lot of time reviewing each and every application and they get quite a lot of competitive applicants. Visa is a factor that many programs that dont intend to pick IMGs apply by default. More than scores, programs look at where u did residency and who wrote letters for you. But when they consider for iv or ranking, a low score/attempt is bad on V and so they may put you on rejection list
Thanks for the reply. I'm just hoping it's less of a "filter tool" and more of a " we look at your application as a whole." What I mean is, hopefully it's not the way I get cut from say 500 applicants to a program and don't even make it onto the PD's desk.

The document tracker says "available" about all documents of my submitted application.

Is there a way of knowing whether the program has printed or seen my application? In other words does "available" change to something else once they've seen it, or does it remain the same?

No, that was changed a few cycles ago I believe. You can't tell if it has been downloaded or viewed.

Thanks for your help, Scopeguy. I'm going into these next two weeks with just one interview in hand. It's nerve wracking but nice to hear we're on track!

remember, one way is all it needs. Dont compare with your friends who applied other specialties such as cardio, nephro, hem onc. Nothing is as hard as GI. Cardio has almost twice as many spots as GI and they are bound to get more IVs.

I know no one can give an exact answer, but how do you guys feel about my application?!?!

US IMG, step 1/2: 230/240, 8 posters at local conference and ACG, 1 case report submitted for publication, 3 active research projects one with data and analysis completed. No red flags.

I sent my application in two weeks ago, no interviews yet....
I am afraid its gonna be tough. Lot depends on where you are doing residency and who gave you letters. If you did in one of the recognized univ program and you did not take breaks after residency and possibly chief year, you may have a better chance of matching.

Hi everyone, Quick question - are most people getting their interviews via email or via the ERAS system? Or both? Thanks!

Hi everyone, Quick question - are most people getting their interviews via email or via the ERAS system? Or both? Thanks!

Both. Emory sent a message through eras. Rest were emails. Hope this helps

Ahhhhhhhh feel like I am lagging behind. Hoping the regional bias effect is taking place as it seems like hardly any northeast programs have sent out invites yet.:caution:

The applicants to GI are too awesome :). I haven't heard from any program after my initial invite almost 2 weeks ago. Getting nervous.

Me too.. Got a couple the first week and now haven't heard in 2 weeks. I don't understand what made me a good candidate then and now just silence. This is such a nerve wracking process.

This has been asked in different variations previously but curious what peoples opinions are. I am a first author of a review paper which will be published in one of the prominent GI journals next month. On my eras application this was at the time of submission listed as submitted (and the journal was not able to be listed). I understand it is still early in the interview invite process, however is it a good idea to email program directors regarding this publication and my interest in specific programs as a chance to secure an interview? Or is the distinction between submitted and published not meaningful and would this instead be grouped as an annoying notification, and I could instead share this information on the actual interview trail?.

Thanks for your input

Not and expert and have no unique insight. I would not email program directors regarding this publication. If I were a program director I would find this to be annoying.

I think it really depends on the wording and craft of anything you do send. I would imagine that if I were a program director and saw some generic review paper listed on ERAS vs a paper I recognized from a major journal I would think of the later in a more positive way and would be more inclined to interview.

Regardless as a resident I don't know the answer to this and it would be best to hear from the fellows or attendings on this board. Also consider emailing your home programs GI director for input as you are likely to be interviewed by them as a default.

Best of luck!

someone asked me how and why programs chose some internal candidates even though they seem to be far less qualified than many outside applicants
I could think of few reasons.
1. Obviously they know the system. Its easy for programs to hire internal ppl who know how to get work done vs hiring brand new outsiders who have to learn the system as well as the specialty
2. Internal ppl know limitations of the program and know what to expect. Well in most cases.
3. Less likely to complain. Last thing program wants is whinny fellows.
4. Most importantly, they expect in house fellows to SUCK IT UP. No program is perfect, no department exists without conflicts or egos. At the very end of heirarchy of a specialty department are fellows and everyone expects u to absorb the pressure of the conflicts. Internal candidates are more likely to do it, as they would have seen these conflicts over 3 to 4 years.

someone asked me how and why programs chose some internal candidates even though they seem to be far less qualified than many outside applicants

Don't forget the fact that a lot of the time they "recruit" medical students into their residency programs w/ the promise of getting into in-house fellowships (or have them do a Chief year w/ the same promise). It would lose its effect if they didn't at least partially take from in-house.
