NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Great - got it. Thanks!!

Now do we NEED to purchase this Dell comp.? what if we already have a feasible laptop?? And if we don't purchase that (and we don't live on campus), I assume we can deduct that from the Total fees due before the beginning of the semester?

Also, I was looking at the academic calendar... What exactly is the "Summer Term?" I saw Fall Term, Winter Term and then Summer Term. What are they referring to?? I wasn't aware that after our M1 year that we needed to attend classes during a "Summer Term"...???
Summer term does not refer to students requiring remediation. Some classes take place during a summer terms such as MPH classes, which NSUCOM students are eligible to take after their first term as a student. Do not worry about it. You will get a break between your first and second year.

Yes, you will. And mine is in 36 days!!! Not like I'm counting...or...you know...anything.

I never got the letter...I got waitlisted in February. I was thinking they were sending that email based on when you got waitlisted? Does this make sense?

When I called Nova and asked if they were going to call people off the waitlist, they replied that I would be receiving a letter in the mail about my waitlist status and they could not reveal what the letter said.

Nova is my first choice so I hope it's good news, but was anybody else told this same thing? If the class was full, wouldn't they just mass email the waitlist and tell them so?

I'm holding out hope.

I just called the admissions office to ask about my status and if there was any movement on the alternate list. I was told that we need to remain patient and that we will get a call if there are any changes.

I never got that letter either. Maybe that is a good sign?!?!

Good luck!

Thank GOD bc I will be on my honeymoon!!!!!!!!!

Doing anything special for it? You deserve it!

Well my spring break got totally jacked because I went home for and discovered my dad was Jaundiced  like...REALLY jaundiced. So that led to a week in the hospital which yielded no results to speak of. So I'm super stressed still, so much for a nice break, right?

I'll probably take a 2 or 3 day coma, then go hide in Disney World for a week THEN maybe clean my house or something (which looks like a tornado hit it...how is it that I'm never home but my house is a mess?). Oh. and NOT think about school. That'd be nice. I want to take a trip to Disney Land over the summer too, I was thinking about going back to italy, but the summer isn't long enough. So i'll settle for quick trips to chicago, newyork, pittsburgh and cali visiting friends (what? mickey mouse is a friend of mine...)

You don't know when M2's start back by any chance, do you?

Sounds much more fun than mine. :p

July 6th is when you start.

I received an email today from NSU admissions stating that an audit has been done on my file, and they discovered that I'm missing 3 credits in English literature.... I asked them why didn't admissions notify me earlier, after acceptance in Nov 08, they wrote back saying that they did notify me of this deficit in a letter sent along with my acceptance letter. For reasons unknown, maybe they made a mistake, I never received this another letter, because I still have my acceptance letter.

According to the admission specialist who sent me the email, I will not be able to enroll in classes in August if this deficit is not met. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas at all of what I should or can do at this point it would be greatly appreciated...... there's only 3 months left before school starts, what do I do take a summer course? I have never taken a summer course, when do most classes start and finish? The thought of not being able to enroll in August...... hmmmmm.....

Almost forgot, I took a humanities course back in sophmore year in college that was heavy on reading and writing but mostly related to Italian literature, anyone think that can be substituted for the English literature criteria?

Best thing you can to is ask them. Also maybe you could ask to either defer requirment and see if they'll let you take a course over next summer (hell, unlike a lot of DO schools, NSU is a full on university. Maybe they'll let you take the course there) or defer your application a year if you don't have any other accecptances.

I find it peculiar that NSUCOM notified you about something as specific as "English Literature" and not just an English course requirement. I would definitely ask if your humanities course would sufficiently satisfy that requirement.

I would look at any of the colleges in your area or the college you're currently enrolled in (if you're still enrolled). Community Colleges always seem to have summer courses over the summer, some being as short as three weeks. If you're set on coming to NSUCOM this August, you'll find a way. I doubt that they'd let you defer your English Lit requirement until next year, nor do I think you'd want to do so. Best of luck.

OH MAN yeah i got a call from them on tuesday instead of a email, im hoping they can work something out...i will even take summer school if I really have to! really freaking scared, i have to follow up with linda on monday to see what is going on, even though they tell me not to worry...IM WORRIED

Oh, snap, I didn't even realize it. I kinda of worked on autopilot when applying to schools. With a degree in bio and a year of psych courses, it's pretty much assured that I hit the admission requirments for 99% of the schools. I'm waitlisted at NSU, but I wonder if they'd accept a hodgepodge of courses that covers a fair amount of literature (3 philos courses, "critical reading and rhetoric" course, poli sci minor, etc). Looks like I need to call NSU on Monday.

I find it peculiar as well. I thought any English class, be it writing composition, reading, or literature, should and will be sufficient to fulfill this requirement. What happend to me was this, prior to matriculating into my undergraduate institution as a freshman, all students were required to take a math competency and writing competency placement exam, I scored a 5/5 on the writing exam and was placed out of one of the English classes that I was required to take and I only was required to take the second course. The pre-health requirement at my school was 2 English classes, since I was placed out of one and finished the second course with a B+, I thought I was complete as far as English courses goes. I even asked my pre-health advisor and she said I was fine. This was 4 years ago.... now I get a email saying that I'm missing a English class on my transcript, well yes I am, because I was placed out of the first one.

Apparently different schools have different standards and they only go by transcripts. My school gave me credit for the first English class, but evidently NOVA wants me to take another one and see it on my transcript. What can I do.

Almost forgot, no where along the way did my undergraduate pre-health advisor/office ever specify that I need to take specifically English literature to fulfill one of 6 English credits prior to graduation in order to be eligible to apply for medical school. I find that very disappointing. They just told me that I needed 6 credits in English, any English class will do, and I was already given 3 credits from the placement exam.

*prepares for summer class unwillingly* So much for having a summer off before med school.

Hodgepodge is the single greatest word in the English dictionary!!! Quality choice of grammar!!!!

I got a call from them, too.......apparently AACOMAS took the "W" designation off of one of my classes that my school counts as writing intensive (aka a composition course) so hence NSU doesn't think I have enough credits for matriculation. They asked for the course syllabus (I took this class my freshman year! I don't have it!) and my high school transcript.

Hopefully this gets sorted out, and soon. I'm a month shy of having a master's degree, I would think it's fairly self-evident that I can read and write.

I have two quick questions involved with Nova. :)

1. Does this school require the compeletion of the listed classes on their website prior to applying and/or require the 90 credits completed before applying?

2. When does this school send out secondary applications?

Thanks! :)

If your UGrad has a Premed committee. Have them fax and send a hard copy indicating that you have sufficiently completed 6 credits of English required for completing their program. Students often come into college with AP credits and are exempt after taking entrance exams. My UGrad had a checklist outlining all the pre-reqs for medical school and listed the courses or placement exams that fulfilled each of the pre-reqs.

Prepare to take that course, but entertain the avenue I proposed above. You may be pleasantly surprised. Best of luck.

Short answer:

Refer to the website.

Longer answer:

NSUCOM requires the completion of set courses prior to matriculation. And why would you apply if you haven't finished 90 credits of courses? That's Junior standing...

Secondary Applications are sent out after review of your AACOMAS, which in my case, was two days after submission.

Yes, with systems courses. Only procedure courses and board studying.

Ah. Gotcha. Speaking of procedure....I've got my CP written exam tomorrow. Have I mentioned that this class may infact be impossible to study for? Seriously. Grrr.

Can anyone shed some light on what goes on during the orientation week. I thought I heard we start a couple of classes and don't go to the full load until the following week. Thanks

Start classes!?

I'm pretty sure my class didn't START anything until 8 am on the first Monday of the term.

I just filled out the order form for my white coat, but when I went to check out, it said "Bill To:" and then listed the NSU bookstore. Then it also gives you the option to bill elsewhere. I'm confused. To whom do we bill this? Don't we pay for the white coat ourselves?? Help please!! Thanks :)

For guys ordering lab coats - are we suppossed to order the "Womens jacket" that the link sends us to? Im guessing we do since medical students have short lab coats...not long. but then the sizing is off.

I was like 95% sure we paid for it. maybe we pick it up at the bookstore and pay then? When I was at the bookstore before I saw a rack filled with lab coats to be picked up...

hey if you click on the top left button, where it says advanced search, it takes you to a webpage that lets you choose between a woman's and a man's lab coat. and as for paying for it, i do believe we pay for..but i guess its better to double check now then be sorry for it later

oh and also this is for anyone that got a email about missing classes or what not, did you guys get an update?

If you had AP credits then those are not included on your transcript but most schools registrar's office will send a letter indicating which classes you tested out of because of AP exams.

I am a second time applicant and i had to do this the first time around because I tested out of the first semester of chemistry and then if you look on your AACOMAS application it says you only have 4 credits for chemistry even though I technically had 8. That may solve all your problems. Call your undergrad institution and ask them about it!

So, um, I just got an email that my webstar got activated. I'm currently waitlisted at Nova and under the advice of the Fin Aid office at Western, when I did my FAFSA I sent it to all three schools that I interviewed at. Did anyone else have something similar happen?

Yes. I am also waitlisted at Nova and got that same email. Although I am not sure what to make of it.

So does this mean that applicants cannot receive an acceptance if they are missing a few prereqs at the time of applying?

So does this mean that applicants cannot receive an acceptance if they are missing a few prereqs at the time of applying?

No, not at all. Many applicants dont have their requirements in at time of application or even at time of acceptance. Once accepted they usually write in your letter something like, "Your matriculation is dependent upon completion of your third Chemistry course with a grade of C or better."

They usually assume you know which classes you must complete still. Whats happening to wongb18c is not the norm. They were suppossed to tell him of his missing requirements at the time of his acceptance letter. Hopefully it all gets worked out.

have they begun taking students off the waitlist yet?

have they begun taking students off the waitlist yet?

The current consensus is that there will be very little waitlist movement this year at NSU...if any. From the forums and posts I've seen many people have already been told that the class is full.

I'm sure thats not the case. Ellen Rondino stating the class if full means more of (we will not be taking anymore interviews, students who get in from this point on are from the waitlist). I'm sure that students will be taken off and accepted. I've heard "the class is full" at another school where there were 25 open seats remaining. You can't really judge much from posts in this forum and hearsay. I've read this entire forum back and front and I can recall someone stating that in a post jan interview, the dean actually said their behind on acceptances for that date. I'm SURE there will be movement on the waitlist. I know of people who have gotten in off the waitlist even in July. Theres a good 2 months left to be plucked off and i'm still confident that I WILL get into this school.

Didn't say there wouldn't be any waitlist movement. Just not much. I mean, depending on the waitlist movement at another school I may not be going to nova. I wouldn't put money on it, but it is a remote possibility. That being said, I think they really over accepted the first half of the year compared to usual. Anyone that interviewed after December seems to have an exponentially greater chance of being waitlisted or rejected. I interviewed 9/11 and I believe every single person in my group was accepted.

WOW! I agree with MossPoh and then some!

"I'm sure that students will be taken off and accepted....I'm SURE there will be movement on the waitlist...I'm still confident that I WILL get into this school."
Alrighty there Captain Optimism! Let me be more clear WHY I said there probably wont be much movement. Since your positive attitude and slight cockiness that you'll get in is somewhat overwhelming to me. In all honesty, good luck. I'm not trying to shatter your dreams or anything. I really think there will be some waitlist movement. There almost always is, but I dont think its as much as you're expecting.

"You can't really judge much from posts in this forum and hearsay."
You're right. I'm going off things from actually being at the admissions office, talking to the dean in my interview, and also in an online pre-matriculation program that all matriculating Nova students are in right now. There are class rosters in this program, we've been broken down into Academical Societies and given peer mentors, we have weekly chat sessions, signed up for computers/tshirts, etc etc. I'm telling you the class is looking full because there are not 25 (or even 5 for that matter) open seats in any of these rosters or lists.

"I can recall someone stating that in a post jan interview, the dean actually said their behind on acceptances for that date."
Yes, I was one of the people that posted this! But you're misinterpretting it. They were behind because of a computer error between NSU and AACOMAS. The reason he told us at all was because they had several interview dates in December with 40+ interviews a day to catch up on the number. He said they would be back on track with their acceptance numbers by January. Which, if you read the forums, you'll realize there has been maybe one acceptance from anyone who interviewed after Jan 1st.

Now THAT is some sass.

I met 2 people (one at a LECOM interview and one at ATSU interview) in March, who interviewed at NSU in Feb on diff dates and both were accepted. To think that NSU only accepted 1 student out of the couple hundred that interviewed post Jan 1, would be damaging to NSU's reputation. It would mean odds are, they did not take the best crop of qualified students if they dismissed 99% of students who interviewed in Jan. and beyond. I guess an a fair analogy would be to say its a big rookie mistake for a school with a 30 year track record. And just because theres 1 student you know of who got in in Jan, doesn't mean theres ONLY 1 student who got in. I've shaken hands with 2 who got in post jan, and i've only met 2. should i say then 100% of people who interviewed jan and on got in?

As for my optimism: It's not cockiness, its optimism. I believe in power of mind, persistence, dedication, and willing a situation to happen. I've sent in prolly 5 letters of rec, letters of intent, a new publication, etc to NSU since my waitlist. I also had a good family friend whose friends with the dean strongly endorse me. I had the interviewers tell me I interviewed very well and that they'd love to see me on the roster. I've had 8 total interviews, 7 to DO schools, my grades are fine trust me.

In addition, and I hope this doesn't come off as cooky. My cousin is a legitttt psychic. I can talk about a professor, friend, mailman, etc she never met and she describes him to me. She tells me what the scores of basketball games are a week before they play. She tells me about which Schools I will be interviewing at, which I will get rejected at, etc. Lets put it this way, as far as her guessing the schools I got into, she was 100% right. She told me the schools I got rejected to with 100% accuracy as well. This woman is unbelievably accurate. She told me I'll have a great interview at nova, i'll get waitlisted, but eventually get in.

Will most people off the waitlist get in? No, maybe 10% of students off the waitlist will get in but I still stand by myself, my abilities, and I will not lose hope that I will be in the class next year.

I hope you weren't being condescending, I'm just an eager driven student hoping, wishing, and willing my way in. Sorry if it came off overhwelming and cocky. Oh and I know the odds are against me, but I feel if I don't have hope, my chances will go down. Thats just me some may call it bologna, but i believe having faith can do plenty for me.

Cool your jets a bit bud. While I don't like anyone to be waitlisted and I understand the crappiness of waiting, you are trying to justify way too much. Just be patient. If it happens it happens. There is optimism for the sake of keeping your head up and achieving and then there is so overly optimistic that the other person wants to bang their head into a wall. Right now you're venturing into the other land. Yes, I understand the virtues of determination. I practice it every day with my powerlifting and constant eating, but one thing I found kind of weird with what you said. You talked about how your interview was so unbelievably great and all that jazz. Why did you get waitlisted? I've been waitlisted at multiple places and while I think the interviews went well at the time (for the most part), I still realize that there is SOME error in my application or interview. As far as the knowing a higher up person spiel, you'd be surprised how little that helps. I knew people on admissions committees at several schools along with my dad donating a ton of money to his school. They don't really care. That person tends to remove themselves from the decision making process in order to make a wiser decision.

None of this is a knock against you as a person and you probably will get in, but damn man, save some of that for your motivational speaking tour with Stuart Smalley. A very wise man in the lifting world once said that when people ask you what your goals are you give them the most generalized answer possible, such as "get stronger". As soon as you start giving details about your goals, someone will tear you down. One has to keep their mouth shut and just work away for their goals and beliefs and not listen to anyone else, or take the bait and bicker.

The psychic thing. Well that is another story. They've tried for quite some time to test for that stuff and can never seem to recreate it when it counts. Don't you think a person that can see the future has better things to do than predict basketball game scores?

You were doing well there until the bit about the psychic.

Don't you think a person that can see the future has better things to do than predict basketball game scores?

my cousin is a successful pharmacist. You've never guessed the outcome to a game while you were wrapped up into it? Do you think shes some lady who just sits there guessing at ball scores as a career? No you didnt knock me? Questionable, but you took a shot at her and so did the person who posted after you.

I really don't get your point about what I said was "wierd". Yes my interview went well. Does that mean I don't have weaknesses as an applicant? Of course I have weaknesses as an applicant and a person. I don't see your rationale when you said that my comment there was wierd.

As far as going into detail about goals asking to be torn down, I don't see that. I see someone going into detail as someone who can pin point exactly what they want. Kudos to them, their precise in what their looking to gain, I admire that, I dont see how that lends oneself up to being criticized. If anything, having a general goal is open to criticism more so than a detailed one because it can come across as not warranting much thought, and therefore perhaps not much of a plan to achieve it.

And as a matter of fact, I had a general goal which was denounced by saying small to any movement in waitlist once I asked if anyone was taken off yet (thereby implying my general goal of getting in off the waitlist). Thats where my precise goal even originated from. i started small talk, then went big.

This board has been pretty helpful, insighful, and friendly, lets keep it that way. People are alot more gung ho about getting into certain schools than I could ever be. Every year people go nuts, lose their minds, kill themselves, etc over dreams of going to a certain school and it just doesn't pan out. I'm fortunate enough to have a seat at another school and I'm happy knowing at the end of the day I'll be a doctor just like most of the people posting here. Regardless of where I go, I hope everyone succeeds at wherever they are at and achieves whatever they set out to (regardless of a general or detailed goal stated) :)

the motivational talk has been given to me by Bryan Peterson (not sure on his last name), the president of the current first year class at NSU-COM. Every forum is filled with it and I'd encourage anyone to continue to think big, dream big, and dare I say, post it too.

Hopefully I'll see you next year MossPoh

Think you guys should back off on the name calling, the guy is just anxious to get in. Just like everyone else was before we got our acceptance..

I agree, everyone should back off. Let the fates decide.
