is it possible that a lot of programs have already filled up their interview spots?

i've been offered interviews at 2 decent/fairly competitive programs (USC, Yale). but i've only gotten 5 interviews total so far. out of 23.

i'm still waiting on 2 of my LoRs. could that be why i haven't heard back from a lot of places yet?

or am i just being paranoid?

Yup... 2 missing LoRs and we are almost Nov will do it. That qualifies as incomplete application and many will not even look at the application without it being complete.

Any other MudPhuds out there who are having angst about putting research on hold for four years? What are you solutions? While I should be studying for step II I'm writting a grant, to pay for a technician to do the bench work for me while I'm in the hospital, sort of a PI in training kinda thing. It's the best solution I've come up with. Hope the grant get's funded...lol.

That's a very ambitious move. I am struggling with the same issue, and am anxious to hear more about what type of grant you are writing, as it is a very interesting idea. I had resigned myself to the notion that research time was going to be basically absent until after PGY-2 year. It's disappointing that Neuro programs do not offer medicine-style fast track options (at least none that I have seen). It would seem that a field with so much great research would have a research track residency. From what I have heard, most programs will allow you to use most of your electives (~6 mos total during PGY 3,4) to do research and get a K-grant together, but this is something I hope to really investigate on interviews. Anyone else have any other info about this issue?

I've found that some programs (not necessarily in Neurology) advocate "resident research" and use it as a selling point. However, when you look closer, many of these research projects are focused on analysis of clinical data and not based on bench research. Presumably, these clinical projects are easier to complete in the haphazard few elective months you have during PGY2 and 3. IMO, I think having contiguous research time is key. I'm actually looking forward to finding a new area of research to delve into; although I would love to continue my PhD projects, I feel like I'm at a transition point in my career and free to choose from new areas, which isn't exactly easy to do later.

To academician, I would echo mantooth's comment that your grant is ambitious. It's certainly possible that one can accomplish worthwhile research during residency via a technician (my research mentor did the same). I would think one of the hardest parts of that plan would be identifying a good technician - your grant will probably only provide 20-25k at most for salary support and at that rate (at least at my institution) you would be hard pressed to find a technician with decent wet bench skills. OTOH, if you already have someone in mind, or if the type of work you're doing is easy to teach to a novice, you might get lucky. Other possible "contra-indications" that come to mind would be anything involving genetically modified animals (expensive maintenance), humans (may be hard to get IRB approval without a senior PI's help), or awards with large dedicated time requirements (K's IIRC require ~75% protected time).

On the grant front I appreciate the input posted above, it's good to know how others are approaching this problem. My master plan for world domination depends on other people doing the bench work, as noted by gizzard and mantooth above. There is a really great technician hear, but she works for someone else, and that someone else got a bit miffed that I might be taking over part of their lab and using them to get my work done. Not my intention at all but I can see how that impression might have occured.

I had planned on an RO3 which pays more than an RO1 and would allow for a bigger technician salary. I'm gonna try two more things. One other prof. whom was on my committee and is one of those big name famous people in a field related to my grant idea. He may be willing to let me "use" his space and technicians while I'm in residency asn he is very supportive, very into people doing research, and has a large enough lab not to feel "used" I think. The other possiblility, more risky is to find someone amazing on the interview trail whom would be willing to have the grant centered in their lab (FEb 1st deadline).

I wouldn't be going through alll this rigamarole unless I thought the grant was fundable. The data is great, the idea is exciting. And, I think someone will take it up and run with it if I dont'. The frustration of going to residency.

There are research track (not fast track) programs but they add nearly 2 years to the residency time, I'd rather just be done.

Hi guys... I am new here. an IMG currently applying for neuro.
got 5 interviews so far, and 1 prelim IM, and of course lots of rejections.
Still haven't heard from 15 neuro programs and 13 IM...
My question is, does the time they send you the interview matter, or do some programs process IMG applications later?:confused: Isn't it weird that a lot of programs haven't replied yet and we're in mid november?
