wasn't expecting to get any invitations for a while, cuz i just submitted my application 4 days ago.

but i just got 2 interview invitations this afternoon! usc & yale.

question: when you get invitations for neuro residency programs, but not for their respective prelim programs, do you just have to wait and see if you get an invitation from the prelim programs? it would be nice if you could schedule the neuro and prelim interviews together instead of having to make 2 trips. do applicants ever call to ask for prelim interviews (where they're interviewing for neuro) without having received an invite for the prelim program? it seems like it would be really presumptuous, but if it's possible it would save a lot of trouble....right?

I had a 960 on the SAT (but I aced gym all four semesters) and I matched at Penn. That's what you get when you are braught up eating Chef Boyardee. On the other hand, MrRAvioli ate mushrooms and got a 260 on Step 1. Moral of the story, mushrooms are better than Chef Boyardee.

beware folk, the reported neurology interview for the university of south carolina is obviously incorrect... unfortunately though we may be the REAL and original USC (dating back to 1801 for all those interested, fortunately decades before the gold miners even found that west coast), our school is not quite the neurology capital of the world... good luck at the other USC though

great question, 13 or so interviews now, prolly do 10 or so... just because i'm so torn as to where i want to go and live and because i have a lot of mid to high mid tier programs with good reps...
oh, and in regard to my previous comments concerning USC, that would be MUSC (medical university of south carolina, in charleston, sc), which is not associated with THE university of south carolina and my associated school of medicine... though it's all good our land, God's country

hey guys- im really confused about this application process and i need some help- i was under the impression that when neuro programs are Categorical that this included PGY-1 intern yr and we do NOT have to apply separately to that schools internal medicine Prelim program. If on the other hand, the school has an Advanced neuro program, then we do BOTH the neuro program and that school's Prelim Internal Medicine (if we want to do it there).
Now what got me confused is that the Vanderbilt program told me to apply to the Internal medicine program even though on ERAS it just has the categorical program listed.

Can someone please clarify all this nonsense for meeeeee!!!!

You have to apply to the internal medicine preliminary year at the institution you are interested in regardless of whether it is Advanced or Categorical. If it is categorical you may not need to interview with the IM department unless you are interested in doing a preliminary year at that institution separately from Neurology. Otherwise, if you are invited for an interview in Neurology and you match there, then you automatically are guaranteed a PGY1 position. Hope this helps!

That is not true. If a program is categorial, you do not need to apply to the IM prelim year. Also, some programs are non-categorical but "guarantee" a prelim year at the institution. You need to go to each program's website and find out what their policy is. You also need to talk to Vanderbilt and ask them your questions rather than relying on this message board.
 
ok cool- thanks for the replies- i ended up finding it on the website and for vanderbilt u do need to separately apply for prelim even tho its categorical- i also searched around on each schools website and found out the specific requirements and those that did not have it listed i just emailed them and asked them directly.
so thanks- im no longer confused which is always a good thing =)

Got Albert Einstein Beth Israel today. I'm waiting on my fiancee to get some ophtho interviews (it's no longer early match, glad neuro is NOT SF Match anymore) then I can focus on just the cities she gets interviews at. Hence the absurd number of programs I applied to.
