Hi everyone!
I was wondering if it is OK to travel during Winter Break of 1st year:confused:
I posted this question few days ago on another thread, but I got zero replies.
I would appreciate it if someone comments on this subject. I have to choose between traveling this July or next December!
Thanks in advance.:)

It would probably be fine to travel during winter break, but I suggest doing it before school starts if you have the option. Gives you a little more flexibility...

Thanks sketches!
I was thinking I will be able to find a place before I travel (I will be moving to live near the campus), but I am still searching. That's why I have been delaying this trip!

I am a 24 yr old female who just got informed that I got accepted into the biomed program the classes this year was from 4-7 pm mon-thur I have a couple of questions
1. is anyone looking for a roomate to help share the cost of a 2 bedroom 2 bath apt.

2. How is the program are there any success storys?

3. are you guaranteed an interview?

4, How did you prepare for the program
5. do you like the area around the campus?

How did you study in the program?

Any advice about this upcoming fall

how did financial aid go

WOuld it be to much to commute from sc to ga everyday which is about 1.5 hr drive

1.5 hour commute to and from school every day? That would suck balls. Just move. You'd be spending a huge amount of your time in the car, and with gas as expensive as it is, you'd spend like $1000/month just on commuting. And what if something goes wrong with your car? You wouldn't be able to catch a ride with someone else, or ride your bike, or take the bus.

I seriously cannot imagine anything that would suck more.

I cannot give any advice about the biomed program, unfortunately, because I don't know much about it, but I can tell you that spending 3 hours on the road every day would be my idea of hell.

i agree! i have experience doing long commutes and its the most stressful thing.

Well is there any advice you can give me about a good well "fair" priced apt around the school....r is anyone still lookin for a room mate???????????????????

crosspoint,
i am 4rth year, and i highly recommend NOT doing the commute from SC to GA...youll be doing enough driving if you join the medical program later and are on rotations.

Unless u have a job in SC that pays well enough where it makes it worthwhile to commute, move to Lawrenceville or Suwanee and save on the gas and overall hassle and possible speeding tickets.

I recommend The Preserve at Legacy Park Apts (on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Rd), The Gables, Sugarloaf, and Madison at River Sound as apts that are close to school and are in safe/nice places.

The preserve at legacy park was fairly priced at $730 for a nice sized, newer, clean 2bed/2bath when i lived there a year ago, they may have some offers for students.

Hey everyone I am going to be a first year for the class of 2012 and I am trying to decide whether to live on my own for a year or live with a roommate. Obviously it will be more expensive to live alone, but I don't know which is easier for the first year. Any thoughts?

Kyle (John 146) I would be interested in talking to you about getting an apartment if you're still looking. A little about myself: I am clean person, I would also prefer a 2Bed/2Bath apartment, I enjoy exercising when time permits, and I won't be bringing any pets. Please let me know if your interested, or anyone else for that matter!

Phillip

I would also like to know if anyone would like a room mate for this fall I will be in the biomed program and from sc new to ga so i don't really know any good places to live clean neat and friendly.....no pets don't smoke...blah blah blah I just want to split the cost because I hear the cost of living is kind of steep in ga....
renee

Have you checked the facebook group yet? I know there were some people on there looking for roommates.

When I was still shopping around, I found the cost of living in the area to be pretty reasonable.

go to the nucleus and GA-PCOM health insurance page.
go to enrollment forms and waiver section and click annual proof of insurance form.
fill out the form and email them back.

If you use Mozilla firefox, the link doesn't work so use Microsoft IE.

Hello my name is David Laborde and I will be a second year biomedical science student at GA-PCOM this year. I was looking for roommates for a house in Lawrenceville. Its located about 10 minutes from school. It is a nice 2 story home with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms and is located in a good subdivision. Total Rent is 1250 so for one person it would be 417 dollars. If interested in the house feel free to contact me at [email protected]ks

anyone know how to setup the Novel Groupwise email client from nucleus to work with an email client such as Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird? Can't figure it out...

I'm having trouble with the same thing. I've tried to set mine up with gmail and yahoo to no avail.

Yeah i wanted to do this too, but figure that we can ask during orientation and get the right answer. not much longer.

yea fair enough, I guess I can wait. When are you all moving up to the area? I think my apt lease begins Aug 1st (latest I could get them to hold it) so I'll probably be up there sometime the 1st week of August to get settled in....

To forward your messages to any other email address (yahoo, gmail, outlook, pop3, etc.) just log in to groupwise at pcommail.pcom.edu, click "options" in the upper right of the screen, then click the "rules" tab.

You will have to set a new rule, so just select "Forward" as the type, make a rule name, leave the "If" section blank, and add your destination email address in the "To" box. I added "GA-PCOM" in the subject so that I can automatically filter my emails in thunderbird.

That sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is. Remember, this will only forward emails to your other account... you will not be able to send pcom emails from other email services (from yahoo for example). Let me know if you have questions.

i'm moving in july 25th at Madison at River Sound.. so i'm hanging out until the bbq and orientation :)

My lease starts july 26th so I'll be up there within a week of that most likely...when is this bbq you speak of?

i was nearby Madison at River Sound. walking distance by target/ihop/panera/chilis/etc. not to mention across the street all the other restaurants. i think its a great place. (from the outside, i never looked inside)

I'm at The Reserve btw, anyone else?

Anyone else interview with Dr. Matayoshi? I'm really looking forward to going to his classes. I get the impression that he is a hell of a teacher.

I heard that if you order too much porn with your pcom e-mail account, they will suspend your mailbox temporarily.

Moderation, guys.

who are you all using for your lenders? I hear that National City Bank (810148NT?) has the best rates, but they only apply to schools in Pennsylvania...we count as being in PA since the financial aid is all processed by the philly school, right? help greatly appreciated so I can get $ in time for school

hey man, i saw that and wondered the same thing. I have been working on budgeting today and figuring out how much extra i need through my grad plus loan. i am doing my stafford through wachovia and decided to go through wachovia as well for my grad plus. most of them are all the same, and i thought it would be easiest just to have it all coming from the same place. First disbursement for grad plus is august 8th, so try and get done soon. when i talked to fin. aid office today, they said they would be approving all the loans from the lenders around august 4th.

Hi all,

If anyone is in town this week or early next week and wants to grab coffee or something let me know.

I am reposting some of my last post in case you didn't see it before:

Hey Folks,
Congratulations on your acceptances. I am excited to meet all of you at orientation or sooner.

Housing:

Last year I ended up getting a nice big house with two other classmates about 3 miles from school. We are paying 1500 a month for a 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath house. We actually have more space than we know what to do with!
So we each pay 500 a month and we are splitting the utilities 3 ways.
Right now, there are a ton of rentals availble near school. I actually found and signed on this place literally 2 weeks before school started last year!

I will be in and out all summer....but if I am in town I am offering up my house as a free place to crash while you hunt for living arrangements. So if you don't mind a couch (trust me it is very comfy) and you need a place for a few nights while you run around town, just PM me and we will see if our schedules match up.

Toodles,
Marcia

hey dude, no thats not normal. it should be 40,500. Not sure why you are 20k short, but definitely check on that.

I could be wrong about this but I think you may have applied for the regular graduate student maximum. $20,500 is the maximum for stafford graduate loans but medical students are allowed to borrow up to 40,500 in stafford loans. I kinda got confused about that as well.

Hey I know this may be somewhat of a personal question, but I was doing estimations on what I might spend on living expenses throughout the year. My estimates came to almost 18k beyond the 40k from my stafford loans. I thought this seemed kinda steep, how much have you guys figured for living expenses?
