I don't know where you are all gettin this 8% info...it was only worth 8 points...60 points on the 1st test + 72 possible points on the second test + 8 points from the lab = 140 total possible...do the math fellas.

8%...yeah! I just finished reading the packets for the first time at about 7pm. I'm doomed! I hope i have a good guessing day tomorrow. :scared: :scared:

That ain't shiznit. I am just starting Chlamydiae...and after that is "other gram neg rods, virology and DNA and RNA viruses." It will be another all nighter...I can't seem to break this vicious cycle. Damn undergraduate conditioning.

Just wait until Biochem comes back...I am gonna pay dearly for the shiznit I pulled before that test. But I passed the big-bad beast, Anatomy, so they ain't gettin' rid of me yet.

Whoa <sound of skidding Flintstone brakes in background> who said anything about 72 questions?

LLP, the syllabus states clearly (now that I bothered to pick it up and read it), "There will be two lecture exams constituting 92% of the total course grade. The lecture component of the grade will be the percentage of correct answers obtained on the two exams, multiplied by 0.92." Thus, lab will contribute 8% of the total micro course grade.

Wow, thanks J Dogg...now I can actually go to bed!
I've been misled all day and night.
thanks Senor Syllabus...that's an extra half hour of sleep for me now.

8% is A WHOLE LOT!

The 8% number is coming straight out of the syllabus. 92% of the grade is exams, 8% is lab. Seriously, if you don't believe me, look it up yourself. I've proven it to many folks like LLP who doubt my number crunching skizils! Fo Shizil... sorry, it's bedtime and my brain is fried... hopefully I can hold enough in for the morning.

It's all about the dirty pneumonics! coxsackie virus... had fun with that one.

Do not underestimate the power of 8 percentage points. I figured it out; you need to achieve a 67.5% test average to PASS micro. That extra 8% pushes you to a final grade of 70.1%. Yay for underachieving!

dude on the real...that test was some sh-t!!!!

so fish, is that math correct? Here is what I was thinking, if lab is 8% of final grade, then all we need is to get a 62% average on the test portion, meaning 132 * .62 = 82 questions right out of 132 total

82 minus your first raw score (out of 60) and you got the number of questions you need to pass (raw). is that right?

I'm not a math wiz, so please take this with a grain of salt, and correct it if I'm wrong.

How about that anatomy??? I'm SO HAPPY I PASSED THAT ISH!!!!!

BIOCHEM, BRUTAL, but THANK GOD FOR ALEX!!!!

our immunology grades are up on banweb; i think there was a generous curve cause i did pretty well even though i barely passed the second exam!

immuno and gross are indeed up, and according the khan himself, 5 point curve. i'm stoked about biochem- i would have been quite sad without that curve.

ok Don, here's the deal if you still care, seeing as the exam is long over now. You're sort of right. You need to achieve 62 points plus the 8 points from the lab to get your 70 to pass the class. Here's how it goes:

(exam average) x .92 + 8 = final grade

so if you want to pass, you need to make 70 for the final grade. I'll save the algebra and just tell you that means your exam average must be 67.4% which means you need to get 89 questions right out of both exams (total of 132 questions).

jack,

you sure gross is up? it wasn't for me...

Didn't you guys get an email from Dr. Kuehn! He emailed us yesterday and He said he is going to have our final grades by monday, so i am guessing the grades will be up on Banweb by tuesday.....I wonder what the curve will be on that!
Good luck studying for pharm and path

Don't they still have to average in Head and Neck scores to get the final gross anatomy grade?

I heard they stopped doing that starting with last year's class. In any case my grade is up.

Dr. Don,

CONGRATULATIONS! I heard that you and your wife had a little baby boy this morning! That's good stuff. Too bad he couldn't wait until after finals..you can give him a timeout for that later :)

I remember having our second one on the day of one of my P. Chem exams. Nothing like having to go from the hospital (on top of the world one day) back to the dungeon to grind it out some more. Been there, done that, you have my sympathies.

But enjoy the glory of fatherhood bro...life is grand and all of this other stuff will take on a whole new meaning.

Congrats again!

Congratulations to everyone for completing our first semester of medical school!

Enjoy your vacation and don't study too hard for Head and Neck.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This is your captain speaking...we've completed our ascent and now we'll be cruising for the next two weeks at a nice slacking altitude that is just below the radar. Please feel free to remove your seatbelts and move freely around the cabin.

Don't forget that this vacation is brought to you by our loyal sponsor, "you worked your ass off," who has been bringing you countless semesters chock-full of stress and no life to speak of, and who is committed to continue doing so for many years to come.

As always, thank you for flying with Air Pumerantz and have a happy holiday.

This is your captain, out.

Hey guys, I know this is not the appropriate thread, but I am looking for some honest answers from students who are happy at COMP. It seems like some of the posts are filled with haters who only want to bash some of the things about COMP. I have an interview next Tuesday and am very excited about the possibility of attending COMP in August. I also have interviews at Kirksville and PCOM and several allopathic schools, but something about COMP seems to be attracting me to it. Some of the questions that I have are in regards to ?largest failure rate? and ?lowest board scores/pass rates? Do any of you know where I can locate actual statistics on this info for COMP? Also, I have heard that COMP has quality residency placement, but I am also unable to find any numbers and intitutions to back it up. Anything that anyone can give me would help. Like I said, I am really looking forward to my interview next week and would like to hear about some of these possible criticisms from current, happy students.
Thanks, and hope to see some of you soon

A DO school is a DO school is a DO school. They are all created equal so I am not sure what you are looking for. Having said that...COMP is FAN-freakin-Tastic and you should consider yourself lucky if you have an opportunity to come here.

There is nothing to complain about -- your experience at any medical school, no matter where you decide to go, will be whatever you want it to be. Don't ever forget that.

P.S. I have no idea where you might find that stats in question -- best bet is to simply ask during your interview. These numbers, good or bad, seem irrelevant to me. Passing your classes is entirely an individual effort. I just never asked for them in any of my interviews so that's just my own skewed take on the subject.

Hey JMC,
did you ever see The newest version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Your boy in the avatar played a creepy role....I thought he did great. He's type casted for suuuuuuuuure.

and how bout that speech by rega today in the corner of lab...i felt mentally taken advantage of. if that makes any sense.

I missed TCM, but yea, they put him in some good roles -- he's the man.

As far as that corner lecture is concerned...I concur with your sentiments. That was something else.

i am a very happy student at COMP. some of the stuff you hear on these boards is blown wayyyy out of proportion, or whiny bitter people and whatnot. i don't think the board scores are the lowest in the nation, nor do i think we have a the highest failure rate. anytime someone gives "statistics" you have to consider how the data was collected and the inherent bias of the source. rumors mean nothing unless they can back their statements up with proof. i know the board stats for our school, and it's not as bad as everyone thinks at all. there was one recent class that didn't do so well, but every class has its own dynamic. our class is definitely one that i think will do fantastic, if our academic performance so far is any indication. as for the students that dropped out, most were for reasons having nothing to do with performance. i can't think of any person right now who dropped out of our class because they failed out. mostly it it due to the old "i don't want to be a doctor after all" realization, or issues with family.

we have a new dean who is very proactive and a curriculum chairperson who has incredible intergrity and does what she says she will do. the school is working hard to improve every aspect of our education, not just the things that people complain about on SDN. like any institution, there are things that need to be fixed and things that work great, but the administration is working hard to improve stuff across the board. despite what people often post, i can tell you directly that they take the student's opinions and ideas very seriously.

as for the boards- you take the boards, not your school. some schools may have excellent pass rates, but that could reflect the students that they admit or the quality of the curriculum. however, you as an individual are fully in charge of your education and your subsequent board score. the resources are there, but you need to utilize them. we are trying to get some early advice and information for our class, because we are very motivated as a whole to kick a$$ on boards. the only way to do well here is to want to do well. i was fully expecting MS1 at COMP to be the toughest thing ever, and it isn't nearly as bad as i had feared. the people are very laid back, and our class already has a reputation for being very positive- we look out for each other and there is so many resources for academics that we have some of the highest averages the school has seen in a long time. you have to see the good in everything life throws at you, so then nothing is really as shi**y as it seems.

ok, off the soapbox. hope to see you here next year, and for any of the other people lurking around this thread in the class of 2009, just wait-you'll be stoked you came here. if you need any more info, PM me.

dear derm,

i hate you. you are boring, even when you're sprouting pus. because of you, i'm convinced i have melanoma, AIDS and assorted autoimmune disorders. why do you have to manifest yourself in so many ways that look exactly the same yet have completely different prognoses?

please die now.

much thanks,
dr. jack

lots of money and *some* free time mean nothing to me if i hate my job. i would rather work twice as much per week doing something i am excited to do. if that sounds foolish and a bit commando, it's only because i left a perfectly good, moderately well-paying job for med school. although there was little room for promotion where i had been, trust me when i say that a combined income of $100,000 is more than enough to have a decent life.

i could however totally do the burn stuff that choctow talked about, because he seemed really happy with his life and thus it made that part of derm extremely interesting. but the other derm stuff? i'd much rather be looking at someone's colon, brain or gall bladder than their yeast infection or festering carbuncle.

I definitely couldn't do derm por vida. No interest in that field at all no matter what they pay me or what my hours would be.

Has anyone heard about this 1 week Genetics course?
I know it's open book but has anybody heard ANYTHING else bout it?

nice to get a vacation this weekend and then another the weekend after.
