Hey guys, I know this is not the appropriate thread, but I am looking for some honest answers from students who are happy at COMP. It seems like some of the posts are filled with haters who only want to bash some of the things about COMP. I have an interview next Tuesday and am very excited about the possibility of attending COMP in August. I also have interviews at Kirksville and PCOM and several allopathic schools, but something about COMP seems to be attracting me to it. Some of the questions that I have are in regards to ?largest failure rate? and ?lowest board scores/pass rates? Do any of you know where I can locate actual statistics on this info for COMP? Also, I have heard that COMP has quality residency placement, but I am also unable to find any numbers and intitutions to back it up. Anything that anyone can give me would help. Like I said, I am really looking forward to my interview next week and would like to hear about some of these possible criticisms from current, happy students.
Thanks, and hope to see some of you soon
i am a very happy student at COMP. some of the stuff you hear on these boards is blown wayyyy out of proportion, or whiny bitter people and whatnot. i don't think the board scores are the lowest in the nation, nor do i think we have a the highest failure rate. anytime someone gives "statistics" you have to consider how the data was collected and the inherent bias of the source. rumors mean nothing unless they can back their statements up with proof. i know the board stats for our school, and it's not as bad as everyone thinks at all. there was one recent class that didn't do so well, but every class has its own dynamic. our class is definitely one that i think will do fantastic, if our academic performance so far is any indication. as for the students that dropped out, most were for reasons having nothing to do with performance. i can't think of any person right now who dropped out of our class because they failed out. mostly it it due to the old "i don't want to be a doctor after all" realization, or issues with family.
we have a new dean who is very proactive and a curriculum chairperson who has incredible intergrity and does what she says she will do. the school is working hard to improve every aspect of our education, not just the things that people complain about on SDN. like any institution, there are things that need to be fixed and things that work great, but the administration is working hard to improve stuff across the board. despite what people often post, i can tell you directly that they take the student's opinions and ideas very seriously.
as for the boards- you take the boards, not your school. some schools may have excellent pass rates, but that could reflect the students that they admit or the quality of the curriculum. however, you as an individual are fully in charge of your education and your subsequent board score. the resources are there, but you need to utilize them. we are trying to get some early advice and information for our class, because we are very motivated as a whole to kick a$$ on boards. the only way to do well here is to want to do well. i was fully expecting MS1 at COMP to be the toughest thing ever, and it isn't nearly as bad as i had feared. the people are very laid back, and our class already has a reputation for being very positive- we look out for each other and there is so many resources for academics that we have some of the highest averages the school has seen in a long time. you have to see the good in everything life throws at you, so then nothing is really as shi**y as it seems.
ok, off the soapbox. hope to see you here next year, and for any of the other people lurking around this thread in the class of 2009, just wait-you'll be stoked you came here. if you need any more info, PM me.
