Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Application Thread 2021-2022

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
the individual is a bit "rough around the edges" on first meeting, that's why I assume it was the case.

Right. Not sure why you chose to leave that out at first as it greatly affects perception. The match data is pretty sound and the average doesn't apply to the outliers by definition!

On a different note...

How are folks dressing for interviews? I know I joked about this in the past, but is a dress shirt/tie/suit jacket combo with less formal pants okay? I'm going to be doing the bulk of my interviews from my office at work and really don't want to walk around the hospital in a suit lol.

I'm capable of sucking it up if necessary, but like...is this even an issue to be concerned about? I figure I can give up my dreams of wearing PJ bottoms and compromise this way!

I think that's more than enough. Honestly no one can see the bottoms so they really don't matter unless for some reason you stand up mid interview. From the one interview I had everyone had a formal interview "top" and no clue what the bottoms were lol.

How many weeks ahead of time should you cancel an interview? I’m still debating but also want to be respectful that the interview spot could potentially go to someone else.

Do the West Coast programs tend to take their time with inviting people? Or are they usually done with interview offers by the first week of September?

I think it depends on the programs but from last years thread, the top tier west coast programs seemed to offer invites upto mid sept...really unsure if that's indicative of this year though...

Has anyone sent a letter of interest to programs they weren’t offered an interview at? If so, how did it go?

Has anyone sent a letter of interest to programs they weren’t offered an interview at? If so, how did it go?
I haven’t personally sent one but my thoughts would be if you haven’t gotten invite at this point it can’t possibly hurt? I would think maybe include information that they might not know that could actually be relevant like if you have family in the area or something that might make you more appealing for that particular program training wise that wouldn’t be obvious just from your application. Anyway that’s the advice I got if I were Going to do one. Hope this helps.

How's everyone doing? I applied to 10 programs. I heard back from 7/10. I cancelled two interviews. At this point, I'm interviewing at 5 including my home program. Someone posted a comment above that made me really think about this fellowship match process.. the two that I cancelled were programs that I would absolutely rank lower than my home program.

I'm just curious if anyone has any mixed feelings about possibly leaving their home program (personal life/family/spouse/kids...the list goes on and on)?

These can't hurt. Let's say if there's like a handful of spots left and the program coordinator is on the fence, a letter of interest can always tip things in your favour.

So how is everyone dealing with prematch offers if you want to politely say thank you but I want to stay in the match? I have no clue how to do that. Don’t want to offend anyone.

Not sure.. I think that’d be an awkward situation. But I guess you can say that you’d still like to attend your other interviews or smth like that…
Have you been offered a prematch?

Heh, I think that was me.

I think that's an important consideration. If you're fortunate enough to have a home program that wants to keep you and that you're happy to stay at if your venture out of the nest doesn't work out then there's really no reason to go on those interviews. I think the upside of the virtual interviews is that is that the barrier of entry is lower but the downside of virtual interviews is that the barrier of entry is lower. These are interviews you probably wouldn't travel to in person if this was a 'normal' year. I think the same logic should be applied here.

I've heard from 8 of 11, should really be 8 of 10 but I added one after the fact which was silly because I never expected to hear from them. I've already canceled one interview and I'm on the fence about doing the same for 1-2 others. Of the 2 I'm considering canceling, one program is a place I don't really see myself and the other is a place I'd love to be at but it's halfway across the country. It's the only program I've applied to outside of my geographic area but the location is very important to me even if it's just symbolic. The interviews are both in about 3-4 weeks so I need to make a decision relatively soon...

Have you been offered a prematch?

At one of my interviews, the PD basically said there was an agreement between programs that was made at AACAP (I think) where places agreed that if they were taking place in the match, they'd make a decision by July and not offer pre-match. I wish some of this stuff was reportable because it seems like it's not in the sprit of that agreement if they had originally agreed to it. Would have been nice to see a list of all those programs that agreed to do this and the ones that have agreed but tried to be shady.

Are you guys sending thank you emails? Just to PD/PC or to all people you interviewed with. Also how long after the interview do you send them? I cant believe I'm going through this match process again, I hated it so much the first time, I guess I'm just a masochist. ;)

I'm already so exhausted from this process...

How close to an interview would it be OK to cancel?
I cancelled one 5 days prior because I got an invite for that date to a program I was much more interested in. Most these places should have waitlists so they will just replace you with someone else

Hey guys I appreciate all your help and feedback. Couple of questions?

How late am I for this cycle? Will I think the answer is pretty late but... Do I still have a shot?

Are there interviews given out in late October and November?

Hypothetically speaking if I get no interviews, the unmatched and open spots that you see in the statistics.... Do they eventually get filled and are just report because they were unmatched initially?

There’s always spots. Just contact programs

I don’t think it’s too late. I think maybe the absolute top programs might not have anymore interview spots but even then maybe you could get interviews with them who knows child is a buyers market. And you can definitely get a spot with any unfilled spots.

Are there interviews given out in late October and November?

Hypothetically speaking if I get no interviews, the unmatched and open spots that you see in the statistics.... Do they eventually get filled and are just report because they were unmatched initially?

I would say that you're pretty late this cycle given that things have been going on for almost 2 months at this point. In the past more interviews did come out in sept/oct as places kept filling spots and things opened up from folks cancelling interviews.

But at this point I think your application is going to raise questions given the timing, i.e. did this person apply late? Did they start applying to more programs because of no interviews? What's going on?
-I think you should reach out to coordinators to let them know that you're interested and weren't able to get your apps in early for whatever reason.
-I think your application already being in the system may help you 'SOAP' into a spot later. There are a lot of unfilled positions in CAP even though it's the most popular of the fellowships. If you're willing to relocate then I think that this cycle should still be pretty dang viable for you. Programs don't want to have open spots left if they can help it. Your PD might be able to help look into some of the openings if you don't match. You could also email PD's and post here and on the fb groups.

Rooting for you!

anyone cringed when they interviewed with someone that they interviewed with back in psych residency cycle 3 yrs ago? (me)

Someone who has interviewed at Mt. Sinai, SUNY Downstate and Thomas Jefferson, please tell me what their call schedule is like (if they have any) and what their outpatient experience is like (case load and when in the yr) and workload in general

Just got a rejection letter. Kudos to the program for actually doing it, especially this 'early'.

Is it still early in interview season though.... I feel like I've aged in the last few weeks of this and not in the aging a fine wine sense. Oof.

Would you mind sharing from where?

I know thank you notes are usually just whatever and really up to the applicant, but with CAP being so small and every program only interviewing like maybe 20-30 people if that should we be sending a thank you note to everyone?

I have sent thank you emails (to all my interviewers) only to the program I liked the most. But I’m not sure if that’ll really make any difference anyway…

I don’t think it will make a difference. My adult residency PD told me that it absolutely does not impact his decision to rank a certain applicant higher or lower. I sent thank you notes to the first couple of programs that I interviewed at but eventually stopped doing this. I didn’t send thank you notes to my first choice program and ended up there.
