****The Official UNLV Dental Class of 2021 Interview/Acceptance Thread

So I'm currently scheduled to interview on Dec. 2nd, but I'm unsure if I want to spend the $400 or so in travel costs for the weekend. Since it's the day after the Dec. 1 deadline, I may know where I want to go before I even attend my interview. (I've already had 3 interviews, two of which are cheaper and I felt very good about my interviews). Would it be worth it to push the interview back? Or just bite the bullet and go?
If you feel confident about the other interviews I do not feel like it would harm you to push it back at all. Especially if you do not want to waste money and/or if you are confident about your other interviews.

To people who have already interviewed/know the area: where do most students live and what is a good approximation of their rent?

About as cheap as it gets. My wife and I were looking at 3 story condos for 1100.

So how do post Dec 1 acceptances work? Is there any significant date in January, or is it truly rolling? (ex: if I interview on Dec 2nd, an acceptance could be sent out in Dec as well)

Nope! And they will only serve water at lunch so load up with caffeine before your interview.
Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but there's definitely lunch. We had beef brisket, chicken, salad, cookies, etc.

Haha I think he means water is the only beverage served for lunch

So everyone is always saying how nice the tuition is for UNLV, and I agree, if you are in state. I just checked the out of state tuition and it is almost 100K/year :/. Is there any way around this other than scholarships?

You can apply for instate after 1 year, and scholarships are still a very real option as they'll tell you if you go to the interview :)

Perfect, thank you! :)
But if you apply for residency after 1 year would you have in-state tuition the 2nd year or would you have to wait till the 3rd year?

(I believe) you can apply for it during your first year, you just have to have been there for 6 months

Hey guys! Does anyone know if this interview is open-file or closed-file? (what materials was each interviewer able to review on you?). Also, did anyone that already went to the interview find it useful to bring a portfolio (transcripts, resume, personal statement, etc.)?

One faculty interview was open file. The other faculty interviewer and the student interviewer just had access to our Personal Statements. I believe most interview dates only have two interviews so I'd guess it would be one of each (ours was structured a little differently and they let us know that). I didn't see any opportunity or find it necessary to have anything extra. If I had brought something I was determined to show I think I would have had to make an obvious effort to fit it in to the interview. However, that's just my opinion based on my interviews. As always, it's never a bad idea to review your application and personal statement before attending the interview to make sure what's on the application you may have submitted quite a while ago is fresh in your mind.

If you need to update coursework/prereqs you'd have to send an official transcript anyway, so bringing it with you wouldn't do much good. If you have questions about the prereqs you still need you can always call, but Dr. Ancajas was nice enough to double check something I had a question about the day of the interview.

Also, they gave us a folder with lots of information and a pen so it was easy to take notes and keep track of information. I wish I hadn't brought a padfolio as it just gave me one more thing to keep track of. Good luck!!!

Quick note: u don't apply for instate residency until 1st year summer, that way u got the instate tuition for 2nd year

Thank you!! Also, were the 3 interviews back-to-back & how long does each one last? Other than that, would you say the rest of the interview day is relaxed?

idk if anyone answered your question just yet, but I'm in the class of 2019 with hugomaaf. Students usually live in Henderson or Summerlin area since it's typically safer/nicer & about 15-20min away from school. Henderson/Summerlin are both pretty affordable and if you get roommates, it's even better.

Is the area where the school is not safe?

The school is a little bit off of the strip, and generally the areas directly off of the main strip in Vegas aren't very bad areas but they arent the safest/nicest either. Let's just say I wouldn't really want to be walking around their during the night, so it probably wouldnt be the best idea to live right next to that area. But like chrispaay said, Henderson and the other surrounding communities are quite nice and safe.

I stayed at an off-strip casino and overheard the cashiers telling clients to not walk around at night. This place was like, 10 blocks from the school.

Interview tomorrow! :)
Will I be seeing any of you there??

I think AlecGaron is pretty on point with what he said. The area isn't the greatest, but then again, I feel pretty safe on campus. We do have our own 24 hr police that patrols just the dental school, so that's nice to have. Good luck on your interview tomorrow too, hopefully they'll cater the mini cheesecake and brisket! If you want to know anything else about the school, feel free to ask me or just message me directly. I'm happy to answer whatever questions you have!

It was great to meet you all today and I hope you all get in!!!

By the way they asked us 2 main questions:
1- why do you want to be a dentist
2- how would you rate yourself 1-10

Anyone is scheduled for Jan 6th? I like this school a lot but I am so worried that they would already fill up their class with people from pre-Dec interviews :(

I am under the impression that if they interview into February, they will keep slots open until all interviews are complete.

I'm interviewing on the 6th as well. I am hoping I get accepted before hand though. I have not bought any tickets or reserved a hotel yet.
