Why...what does it say?
it shares the story...one of the brothers went to florida and liked the location so much on the beach, he bought it on he spot. The next day he threw the key in the ocean and that store has been open 24/7 since, including during hurricanes. At least that's all I can remember...it was the entire back page.

except for my wife and her entire family...

Hahaha. You're married to a Yinzer. God bless your soul. The main reason I'm moving to the Pittsburgh burbs (other than the availability of jobs) here in a few months is because I can just move in and automatically be the most intelligent person within a 50 miles radius.

this is what my wife has to say about that...

Evidently, she hasn't been to Arkinsaw..

Just like everyone else from Pittsburgh. Overinflated sense of everything. They think Pitt is on the same level as Harvard. Sure it is. They think Pittsburgh is a "big city." You can drive 15 minutes from the Triangle and be in the country. And, above all, they think that they are intelligent people. Thanks to their collective stupidity, I dominate them all day, every day at Dave & Buster's trivia. Got me a PS3 with all the tickets I won off of their overinflated egos. Hell, I love the town.

Are they open 24 hours like the ones in Yinzertown? It's usually the only place I can go at 3AM after Dave & Buster's closes. That or Eat 'n Park...but I wouldn't make a convicted rapist eat that stuff...

I thought you could appreciate that I almost booked, and then declined, a hotel for one of my interviews because of a Dave and Buster's on premises.

I knew there was no way I could be interviewable at 7 am with such a distraction. So I will go the evening after. My friends who live there might want to do city-specific going out. But I haven't lived anywhere with a Dave and Buster's since I turned 21, so that is my priority.

Since this thread is so off topic I feel it appropriate to ask. What are the odds your cute waiter is homosexual. Since he lives in ft lauderdale doesn't that make it 70% likely but add that he is a waiter then it makes it 85% and add the fact you described him as cute makes it 95% but then you have to subtract 20% because the restataunt is from Pittsburg so my final estimate is 75%...

I love when threads get off topic I can say anything

I would have edited my post before you replied if the iPhone would quit making me log in and if sick people would stop expecting me to fill their rx's, can't they see I am doing important stuff on my phone? Geeesh

I don't meant to get off topic but here is a very important yet overlooked auto maintenance procedure I want to share with you guys.

Very Important Auto Maintenance

This is especially important to perform since it's cold. And if you haven't had it done in a while, I suggest you do it stat. Above link is a DIY tip. But the next time you get your oil changed, ask them about this procedure also. For those of you female drivers, consult your BF, dad, or brother before doing this yourself.

it's highly likely...oakland park is next door from Wilton Manors, home of Florida's highest gay population. They also have the honor of having one of the highest HIV infection rates in the country

I hear people talk horror stories about having to get up 6am to clear the driveway of snow..only to have the snow plow come and stack the snow/ice pile against the driveway... That's no way to live.. to get up that early.

Whatchoo talkin' bout? I was at the hospital this morning at 6am. I have what they call "work ethic."

First off you only need to do this every 250,000 miles. The materials used to make the fluid are very expensive. Doing it any sooner is a waste of money. I would only do this if you are highly skilled mechanic. It is not a beginner DIY job.

With all due respect, I couldn't disagree more.

Ever since Auto Zone started to import the fluid from China, you know the price went down dramatically. Doing this every 50,000 miles is the key to logevity of your car. For American made cars, I recommend this service every 25,000 miles.

I do agree that it's not a DIY job for a beginner. Click and Clack recommend you find a specialist in your area to do this job.. and I think you can go to their website to find a mechanic who can do it.

Ok, I see this thread has gone way off topic, but as I was reading through it, I thought I'd add my measly student-grade 2 cents...

A previous poster said something about all the people complaining about freezes, shortages, etc. being from no-name schools. Well, I'm at a top tier school, and actually finished my first degree in business in a program ranked #1 in the US. Then I moved out of state, and no one gave a rat's ass b/c it wasn't their local state university. So yeah, the rankings are nice, prestigious, and make you feel extra fuzzy, but in my experience they don't translate to increased pay, job opportunities, or anything else to help you pay off your student loans if you have to go out of state...that is unless you're applying to grad school.

Someone else also said something about limiting the number of pharmacy schools. I understand the ACPE wants to increase the number of pharmacy schools to meet demand, but I just heard about a report (honestly I can't remember who wrote it, the Texas Workforce Commission or the Texas Board of Pharmacy,) but at least in this state, at the rate schools are opening (a new one in Dallas next year after 2 more new schools in the last 2 years) the report states that by 2014, the amount of pharmacists graduating from accredited Texas schools will meet the demand for pharmacists in Texas. Numbers from 2 or 3 years ago indicate Texas is producing 40% of the demand for pharmacists in this state. And of course, we have a HUGE influx of out-of-state pharmacists for the high growth rate (which isn't slowing down) and nice weather--apparently we're very popular with Kansas pharmacists.

So come 2014, hmmm where are all those grads going to go? Looks like it's out of state to a most-likely lower-demand market. And there you have local politics again...go to California (may it be high-growth forever...) and get turned down b/c you didn't go to UCSF, and so on. In state is always preferred for employers. And lucky me--I'll be finishing up by 2012 and might do another year of residency, just in time to come into the tightest market for pharmacists in Tx ever.

In az I don't think there are many jobs left in retail... Just 6 months ago every week there would be an email with about 20 or more open shifts you can pick up the next week since the new grads signed there have been no emails and I have talked to a floater today who they can't find 40 hours of work for him. It will only get worse in august with more new grads. AZ used to always need help I didn't think it would be saturated this fast. I don't know if it is the same at wags but definitely CVS.

Seems entirely the opposite to me. I don't currently live in Arizona, so I can't speak for the people who are working there now, but I certainly didn't have a hard time getting a job there. People in my state are getting turned down left and right but we're moving to AZ this summer and I already have 4 job offers on the table. Everywhere is a bit slow right now with budget cuts, but I'd think AZ (with all the snowbirds and retirement communities) would be one of the last places to dry up for pharmacists.

This summer there were jobs, now there are not. Thats what I am saying. It dried up fast. I believe walgreens and cvs are not hiring anymore.

You are indeed correct. They are not hiring at this moment. We have a job fair next month, so we'll see what they say. I have confirmed this with several sources. Hospitals in the Phoenix Metropolitan area are not hiring either.

Ross, I can't believe how naive you are. You remind me of the people who bought houses at bubble prices and said they CANNOT go down. You fail to see how bad of a situation we are in, not just as pharmacists but as a country. This country is in for at least 3 more years of recession and then we will not get a recovery. We will get stagflation. All those trillions we spent to bail out the banks and baby boomers will be paid for by those who need to work for the next 30 or 40 years. Us.

The oldsters who were looking at retirement, who bought 600k houses, will not retire. They will probably die on their way to the cash register or drive thru.

I think you are desperately trying to tell yourself you made a good decision to become a pharmacists and are trying to justify the 150k in debt you have. But the fundamentals are the fundamentals. Here in So. Cal there are no jobs. If you want to work in Blythe or Barstow maybe, but if you want to work anywhere there is electricity for get it. Even places like Palm Springs that always struggled to find staffing as the retirees retired there in increasing numbers is fully staffed. Face it all those Rph in retirement and all those women part time pharmacists are flooding the market place and they arent going anywhere anytime soon.

If you really want some salt in the wounds, what is really destrying our profession are the H1B visa Rph that are flooding the country. The chains are bringing them in like mad even now that there are a flood of students. These people are the real winners, their college debt is probably 5k.

dang...bitter much....good post though...everyone needs to remember it is not just pharmacy but everyone..md, dds, dvm, dpm. Maybe we should all just go to med school and add some more loans and hopefully the economy will be back to normal by the time we finish in 10 years

I have been very supportive of our profession but it is getting tough for pharmacists in Southern California. No one is spending so the retails are taking a big hit and some are not hiring. CVS just purchased Longs Drugs so some of the Longs Drugs are now closed. Female pharmacists are now working full time to support their laid off husband. Old pharmacists are not retiring because they are not sure they have enough money to retire. People are losing their job and their insurance, which makes it very difficult for them to afford their medications.

This does not mean you can't find a job in Southern California but you must stand out from the rest of the pack. It is going to be like this for at least a year. Hang on for a depressing ride.

True. This stagnant economy affects everyone HCPs across the board but MD & DDS are better at controlling the supply by restricting immigration and number of schools/residency. Although there are new meds/dentals schools, their schools aren't mushrooming like pharmacy schools do.

Foreign grads MD need to compete for residency to become US physicians.
As long as the residency spots are controlled, the supply should be controlled. Foreign dentist can't practice in the US unless they go back to school for a couple years and compete for limited spot reserved for foreign students. They can't easily come here and work like nurses/RpHs.

this is the first I've really heard of foreign pharmacists - is it really that big of a problem?

No, people would like to blame foreigns when things are tough. It is pretty difficult to get licensed if you are a foreign educated pharmacists. California is the most diverse state and only 80 foreign grads passed the CPJE in a 6 month period:

http://www.pharmacy.ca.gov/publications/0408_0908_stats.pdf

That being said, USC has the highest passage rate of all the California schools (finally!).

80 is nothing to laugh at.

I had a layover at Lovefield yesterday. Contemplated harassing you.

I'm not too worried about foreign grads. I'll be residency and possibly fellowship trained.

I was in new england. I'm laying over in philly now.

fun! I head out to San Diego in a couple hours.

80 out of 979. That is about 8%. Considering the size of California, I am fine with that number.

Then I will get my Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist certificate. Beat that!

some places don't seem to care about that. A shame, I know.

Now you tell me. I have been studying my butt off!

oh I'll do it anyway, it's more for me and my intellectual smugness (is that a word?) than anything else.

Not true bigPharmD. In my former state legislation has been introduced twice to eliminate pharmacists in favor of a "Super Tech." Why? Because so much of pharmacy is now controlled by big business, and they wouldmuch rather pay a super tech 40,000 a year versus 100,000 a year.

Upon speaking to a "large chain" rep this morning about the availiability of jobs in Southern California, she told me that "they were fully staffed" but would "be interviewing for positions for graduate interns."

That means we'll be in El Centro, CA or Bakersfield....
