yep, its similiar! it started off as a dialect of marathi b4 political compulsions lead to its recognition as a different language and now it is one of 18 national language that appear on indian currency notes.

Studying currencies from various countries gives some important clues about the country's culture.

In all the years that I've been in college, I've met many from Mumbai. But most of those people have been guju, though from Mumbai. There have never been any truly native born marathi people that I have come across, except for a handful of them. I wonder why that is. At my uni we see many malayalee, gujurati, punjabi, bengali, telegu, pakistani, and tamil people, but I've never come across many marathi people or other non punjabi north indians.

Well i dont have answer to ur question. :( Generally marathi manus is pleased very easily. Traditional marathi way of living is austere if not spartan! They r not very ambitious. maharashtra is second most populous state in india marathi is fourth largest language in india after hindi bengali and telugu but have u ever seen a marathi prime minister or president? Even in beaurocracy cadres such as IAS both IFSs or for that matter any central agency no. of marathis is abyssimally low.
I terms migration inside india maharashtra receive highest number of migrants. where is the question of marathis migrating outside? Maharashtra is one of most prosperous states in India. statistically speaking maharashtra has second highest standard of living in India. I terms of social development it is second only to kerala.
Social reforms in maharashtra started very early even earlier than bengal! Education wise maharashtra in foremost state in india. It has nearly 40000 seats for engineering and nearly 3500 seats for allopathic medicine.!!!! so where is the question of migrating!

Ok that's it. I know this is a useless post I made, but just pointing out that its quite puzzling why there are only certain groups represented
I hope i have been able to partially answer ur useless post if not entirely :)

hi A2M,.

did u notice many marathi surnames such as nadkarnis deshpande listed as konkanis in 'where in india.... ' forum/?

Isnt it strange. I have two friends who go by surname of nadkarni and zillion others called deshpande but I have never heard them speaking konkani! It came to me as a shock to learn that Pula deshapande lata mangeshkar borkar are all kokanis. Puula and borkar have written only in marathi and as far as mangeshkar concerned she has never sang a konkani song! I havent heard anyone speak konkani though mumbai is technical in konkan region of maharashtra isnt it stange/ If these persons were konkarni where did they speak their language/ Only common thing i notice about them is that they are all GSBs? I dont understand this mahabra politics since u r chitpavan u may help this 96K ;)
