If all goes well and god forbid nothing unexpected happens, I will be there with you.

Me too! have you looked into housing at all in the area? Seems like it is a little pricey

I've looked online for apartments a lot already. I'll probably go look at them over winter or sometime in the spring. I dont plan on living in the campus ones b/c i have a cat. I'm looking at woodlands for the first year perhaps.

quick question, iam asking for my own knowledge. How do u plan to pay the rent for apartment and other expense. i mean can we take that much loan from school or u have other source.

LOANS! I'm going to look into a job for mostly the weekends. Like reffing soccer games or something in chicago. That will pay food probably and water bill, not much, but something. I was told that scholl students get an average of $1600/mo from loans and stuff. Thats plenty. :p

wow $1600, i think one can survive happily with that much amount monthly. i think a good luxury 1bd room apt in Northwest suburbs (where doclm also stays) is around 700-800 max. thank u very much for that information. tat helps a lot. now i can leave my parents home if they threatened me to cut of my finances if i dont marry the girl of their choice:laugh:

I will be attending Scholl Fall07 aswell....I really don't know what to expect in terms of housing and cost of living. 1600 a month sounds reasonable where I come from (austin, Texas) but I don't know how far that'll get me in Chicago. Do you guys plan on spending the next 4 years in North Chicago/Waukegan area or moving down into the city once we start rotations?

Iam from Chicago area. apartments in my area which is like 16-17 miles from Scholl are from $600-700 for 1 bd room. Unfortunately u dont find studios in suburbs. If u r single. Then i think 1600 will be more than enough. U can live happily. plus if u wanna share ur important thats gonna be more cheap.

The 1600/mo i got from a Scholl thing, not sure on it. I'm sure it varies person to person.

I heard some parts of Waukegan aren't that great. You can find places there for like $500 for a 1 bedroom, but I was told if it looks too good to be true, it is. Woodlands is next door to Scholl, i also heard a few ppl stay at Northern Crossing. A site I really liked for apartments is www.forrent.com

I heard some parts of Waukegan aren't that great. [/url]

Believe me! not only some parts but this whole Northern part is not good, once u cross scholl and move north its pretty scary out there. Especially during dark time. Family people dont even think abt it even in ur dreams.

If i was a new to chicago i would settle for woodlands or move towards northwest suburbs or little south of Scholl (not southside) but just the area of buffalo grove, libertyville, etc. Plus Scholl offers shuttle service from Metra rail station. So people can take homes a lil bit far from college but close to station and commute by rail. U dont wanna end up driving daily at 8am or 4pm in chicago traffic.

even if someone is offering me a free apartment in Waukegan area i wudnt go unless iam a local from that place and i know the place.

I saw that other ppl were asking what equipment is going to be needed at other schools, so can Scholl students let us know what we may need for the first year at least. They might make nice Christmas/graduation presents haha. Thanks!

You need a laptop, printer, and lots of paper and ink cartriges

Or you can be like me and have all of your notes bound on a test to test basis for each subject. I personally don't have a laptop, however more power to you if you can get one. I only have a home PC, a color printer, lots of paper, and ink cartrige refill kits.

When you start Scholl you will become your own personal printing company which tries to print and bind hundreds of pages of notes for each class. I can tell you that I have used a full color cartrige up in two hours. ($30) that would get me through the next two days. Each anatomy test is about 200+ color pages. Biochem is not that bad, however I printed out over 500+ pages so far. Structure and Function you will want to print out very well detailed color pages, since you will be memorizing and analyzing the appearance of every cell, fiber, bone, muscle, ect, tissue in the human body. The physiology portion won't require you to have color, but it is nice to see in some pictures. Other classes will require a lot of paper as well.

Also, you will need books. Although you will not be required to have books since all of your lectures will be put on D2L, it is nice to have references to material that your covering. I many times will go through the book along side the notes and add in specific details that I like. In my mind books are important for you to get. Biochem, Histology, Clinical Anatomy, Anatomy Altas (Netter). If you are weak in Physiology, then get the book, however I don't find much of a need for it.

In addition you will need a Dissection Kit for Anatomy, however many times you can use a left over one from last year. Some time you will need a Stethescope and optional Blood pressure cuff for Physiology and Clinic later on. However, that is not urgent.

Just plan on buying stuff in your first week of class from the book store or get it off amazon sometime before school starts.

I haven't opened a book except the Netter atlas. Seriously, not once.

yeah...I would agree. The netter is probably the only book that students would need. The notes for the other classes are more than enough, especially for structures and functions.

It doesn't have to be a Netter, really any anatomy atlas is all you will need. However, if you are a last minute studier Rohan will be great to you the night before the anatomy lab exam.

I have a Rohen and i love it. I think its really good for my lab exams now because of the real pictures they use.

Weird question, but those of you at Scholl, do they sell Scholl t-shirts?

Yeah,

The bookstore sells a lot of Scholl T-shirts, sweat shirts, caps, mugs, and stocking hats. Also, they sell RFU and CMS stuff as well.

Hey...I got myself a real cool looking Scholl hat for winter.

I'm not quite sure that I would describe it as cool............:)

Scholl was the last of 3 schools I interviewed at and I was sold on Des Moines until I drove away from North Chicago. It just came to me that Scholl would offer me better opportunities as a student, but of course that's everyone's personal preference. I look forward to seeing everyone in the fall!

I agree that School offers endless opportunities to their students. I feel like Scholl will prepare me for success in the clinical and research aspects of podiarty. Cant wait to get there in the Fall!!

You are absolutely correct about that. Scholl is huge into clinical and research breakthroughs. Have you looked into the research being done at Scholl? You can look into at the CLEAR lab at the RFU website or find some articles in JAPMA. There are seriously endless research opportunities for many students here. Also, Scholl is good at getting your feet wet with some clinical Podiatry within the first couple years.

Congrats:thumbup:

Congrats to all you cool ppl! Scholl Rocks!

I have looked into research, and really looking forward to taking part in it. I have recently earned my MS in biomechancis, and want to be involved in more clinical research. Thanks for the tips... The CLEAR program looks like something I would love.

I will be attending Scholl in the Fall :) I'm actually looking for a roommate - either for the Woodlands or the student dorms? Anyone looking to lower the expenses of living? ;) I'm definitely willing to talk if you are interested!

As far as first year books go...

Anatomy: an atlas (some like netter, others like different ones, particularly ones with real pictures)

Structure & Function: Although Dr. Bareither highly praises the text, his notes are so wonderfully illustrated and tested from, it is completely unneeded. You do not need a histo atlas for the histo lab, either.

Biochem: Lots of people like Lippencott's illustrated reviews, however, it is only about 50% similar to the course topics. Buy it used from half.com

Lower Extremity: Again, a Bareither course in which books are not needed.

Neuro: See above, another Bareither course.

Micro/Immuno: There is a $20 book for immuno that is a piece of crap, but questions on the test were taken from the sample questions in the book. Micro a book is not needed, the notes, while disorganized, are sufficient.

Don't waste your $10 on a dissecting kit, there are plenty of tools in the lab already.

You get a lower extremity model with your tuition.

by the way...
I designed the shirts that we sold to the class of 2010. The bookstore designs are really lame. Go with my "I heart Feet" designs. Much cooler. Shirts made by students are way hipper, and the money goes to a good cause (student orgs)

For those attending SCPM I would like to recommend Evanston. It's about 30 minutes by car or METRA. You are also close to the El and the actual city of Chicago. It is the best of both worlds and I'm surprised more people do not take advantage of it. Evanston also has great study spots (plent of places like Barnes and Noble, coffee shops, nice libraries, etc). A decent 2 bedroom will run about $1000-$1200 which is doable with a roommate. Probably not ideal for families though.

I've been looking at living in Kenosha. The places I've looked at (online) look much nicer, have more square footage, and are cheaper than lets say, ones in Gurnee or Lake Bluff areas. I was wondering if anyone has lived or knows someone who has lived in Kenosha while attending Scholl. Is there a train? Was it worth the drive? I realize with gas I'll probably break even with living closer, but I'd rather a nicer/bigger apartment if its about the same money a month. Let me know, thanks!

I know someone who commutes daily from Kenosha to downtown chicago. So i guess it very possible to commute from kenosha to scholl. Plus they are on same train route. I heard Scholl offers shuttle service to-from the station to campus.

But keep in mind, since we are from illinois. We are used to fast driving. wisconsin is very strict in their speed limits. there are so many sheriffs, cops, on highway. if you go even 5 miles above the speed limit they give you the ticket. I got 2 so far. he he he. Its like you will driving from illinois speeding and suddenly as you enter wisconsin you will find a cop. he he he.

I choose to move out of the Racine/Kenosha area and live by school. There is a lot of morning traffic you have to deal with in order to get to your 8am classes on time. If you like sleep, live closer to campus.

I just found out yesterday that I have been accepted to Scholl. I am very excited about getting the last leg (seven years) of my education started.

Forget education! Chicago is home to DA BEARS!

I was at the game last weekend, it was crazy!!! People were spraying beer like it was champagne. Next weekend is going to be even better!

Hopefully next year when we all start school at Scholl next year, the DA BEARS will still be as good as this year.

I was at CRIP in December in Chicago for residency interviews and went to the game where they clinched the NFC North against the Vikings. Unfortunately, I'll be attending residency in "Lions Country"

I am from "lions country", actually just across the boarder, and also want to go to residency there. Not so bad, the fans and tried and true! Do you already know for sure your residency placement?? congrats.

Yes I do. I found out shortly after interviews. Some programs will tell you where they are ranking you while others don't.

I wanted to see if you guys could tell me how long it was from your app being complete until getting and interview invite. Especially if there is anyone out there that didn't apply until late...like now:D Thanks!

I applied to six schools and got six interviews within a week. I think Barry U called me the day after I submitted my apps. It's a pretty quick turnaround. If you have suitable grades and test scores expect a call. I did apply early but I still think you'll hear from the pretty quickly. I accepted a position with Scholl. They have a good deal of money dedicated to research, which I believe is an excellent indication of the direction the school is heading. Good luck!

Thanks. That's great that you had such a favorable response. I'm actually only applying to Scholl. All of my eggs in one basket, so to speak. The only thing that they are waiting on is my letter of rec from the pod that I shadowed, so I'm hoping they will have that by next week.

It was only about 1 week before Scholl contact me after I completed my application. I had an interview shortly after that, and they offered me admission the day of my interview. I was very late in this process, I believe it was April or May 2006. But, I decided not to start school until this fall. Good Luck!! :)

I got a call today from Scholl! :D I'll be interviewing in early March; do you guys think that there will be ample room in the class? They sent me possible dates to interview that go all the way until the end of April, but I want to get in and interview as quickly as possible. The sooner the better. Does anyone have any interview advice (specific to Scholl)?

If I get in, I'll be commuting from Grayslake. Anyone else?

Hey guys,
First off, congrats on the Scholl acceptances! I don't want to hijack the thread but I have a few questions about the school and applicants. I am definitely set on podiatry after doing an awesome week long internship at OCPM and shadowing a pod wound care specialist. I will be applying for the class of 2012. Anywho, I have seen both Ohio and NYCPM but I am really interested in getting a closer look at Scholl. The affiliation with a medical school, the BA in human biology offering, strong research opportunities available, location near Chicago, etc are quite appealing to me. Sounds like a great place. That medical mission trip to Ho, Ghana sounds awesome too!

Anywho, do you know what Scholl is looking for in terms of MCAT and GPA? I have a pretty good GPA 3.6 and going to start busting @ss for my May MCAT :scared: once my examkrackers books arrive. Would you guys mind sharing your stats with me? Do they often do the same day acceptance/denial? What made you want to go to Scholl over the other pod schools??? Any opinions for what Scholl is looking for in an applicant?

Thanks again guys and congrats! Best of luck to you all.

-Bryan

Hey KHep, I also got a call today from Scholl for an interview invite. I'm super excited, but was kinda bummed to hear the earliest open dates were not until March :(...I replied to Kimberly's email saying I'd prefer the March 6th or the 14th, so hopefully I get the 6th, bc you're right..the sooner the better. Maybe we'll be interviewing together! Good luck!:luck:

jewmongous,
based on my impression of the interview at Scholl, they're looking for good stats, yes, but what they're really looking for is that you have some experience in podiatry (shadowing or whatever) and that your overall application and particularly your interview stresses that you have a motivation to do podiatry. I'm sure the stats of admitted Scholl students are a little higher than other schools, but a 3.6 gpa coupled with a good mcat (>26) would speak strongly on your behalf. Scholl is THE place to be for research, and the amount of money and energy going in to research greatly reflect the direction the school (and the profession) are moving in. I don't mean to say that everyone does or should do research, but there are alot of opportunities at Scholl.
I was offered same day acceptance at Scholl with an undergrad GPA of 2.9, but I got a 31 on the MCAT, finished an MPH last year, and have alot of research experience including a couple of publications. If you're truly motivated to be a podiatric physician, the opportunity is yours for the taking.

Plus its Chicago and everyone loves the Cubs and DA BEARS!

Congrats! Ya, hopefully nobody beat us out on those dates, right? I too was a little dismayed to hear that they only had March or April. I guess I shouldn't have been, considering how they give such a large number of possible dates. I applied to DO schools two years ago (I declined an acceptance to WVCOM) and my experience was that they gave you one...or two dates at most. Well, any way, good luck and maybe I'll see ya there! Any idea how many they interview on a given day?:luck:
