PERIO 2010 anyone???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am very worried about not being accepted.
I would have no clue what to do if I don't, since my husband does not want to move back to my home country....

Anyways, about my stats, they are not very good. I am pretty average :(

-My GRE sucks. I got 570 (41%) on Q, 570 (80%) on V, and 4.0 (41%) on writing.
-I hate ECE. They gave me 2.88 GPA for American standarts. And I know that compared to the number one of my class, my final average wasn't bad at all. My average in my country is 7.5 out of 10.0
-rank: 30 out of 91
-TOEFL ibT: 115
-NBDE I: 84

On the other hand I do have quite a good resume I guess. I have 7 years of experience in my home country, 4 of them as a periodontist ( I already hold a certificate from my home country, which they can consider good.. or bad, since I might bring habits from different philosophies!!! )
I have some research experience and published 2 articles. And I have some teaching experience as volunteer didactic assistant.

And I haven't been called by any schools yet :(

I m a ftd periodontist.. 4 years of experience as an instructor.. gpa 3.55(bachelors) and 2.84(masters), boards- low 80's and toefl-90. good recommendations. i wish to join masters - perio program.
can you suggest me..
1. whether i should pursue my application thru pass or directly to schools.. 2. also ho do i ask for the volunteer program in perio in dental schools (by calling the dental school directly or something else)
3. is part 2 and GRE necessary to apply for the masters program.
pls reply.. i m too confused

Hey there. I applied to 9 schools for perio and for 4 schools for IDS program.
My profile is very similar to yours. NONE of the perio programs called me for interview. Harvard got me waitlisted.
However ALL of the programs for IDS called me for interview and I got accepted in all of them.
So I think it might be an easier path since our resume look very good comparing to regular GP's applying.. But.. it all depends on your goals. For me I just wanted to practice my career. IDS program can be a lot more expensive however you get to practice anywhere in America after, no prejudice against your diploma and you can still do perio, just not as an specialist...
Later in the future your chances of being accepted in a perio program are better... And maybe you can get a the top program like UTHSCSA.

I have two friends who graduated with me and are in perio programs now. they said economy brought a lot of people back to school and made it more competitive this last year.

good luck

ilovegoldens thanks for your always valuable inputs so do yo mean is it better to get IDs than a perio program and how I practice later with this program certificate if I don't have DDS or DMD ??

It depends on your goals..
I have friends who HATE being general practitioners.. So in this case it would be hard to go through an IDS program...

If you don't have a DDS from an accredited school you can still practice in America if you get a certificate in a specialty program here in the US ( usually 2 years program minimum requirement)
However only a few states would allow you to practice ( I know Texas and Washington State, a few others I cannot remember)

With a DDS from an American school you will be free to practice everywhere in America. And if you really want to become a perio you can apply for a program after. Having a degree from an accredited school might even increase your chances.
