I am applying to Case Western, UConn, UMaryland, UMichigan, Pittsburgh, UPenn, UMDNJ, Colorado, and Nova. Anyone know anything about these programs?

i am not white, so this is not meant to be racist, but how come there are so few white periodontists? 90% of my school was white, but 90% of the perio faculty/residents were not.

Gateway for FTD to practice in the US.

I have applied for

UAB, U COnn, U mich, U of Louisville, OSU, U of Illinois, CAse, UMn , UK and SLU.

Today I have got my first call for Interview at U of Michigan. :)

If you don't mind me asking, how did you do on boards and whats your class rank?

I am a FTD with NBDE-1 85 Toefl 99. Handsome number of CE courses related to perio. 2.5 yr general dentistry experience in home country. one 5 month externship in an implants Practice and 6 month internship in perio in U.S. Some clinical research expxerience in perio but no publication.

I am very worried about not being accepted.
I would have no clue what to do if I don't, since my husband does not want to move back to my home country....

Anyways, about my stats, they are not very good. I am pretty average :(

-My GRE sucks. I got 570 (41%) on Q, 570 (80%) on V, and 4.0 (41%) on writing.
-I hate ECE. They gave me 2.88 GPA for American standarts. And I know that compared to the number one of my class, my final average wasn't bad at all. My average in my country is 7.5 out of 10.0
-rank: 30 out of 91
-TOEFL ibT: 115
-NBDE I: 84

On the other hand I do have quite a good resume I guess. I have 7 years of experience in my home country, 4 of them as a periodontist ( I already hold a certificate from my home country, which they can consider good.. or bad, since I might bring habits from different philosophies!!! )
I have some research experience and published 2 articles. And I have some teaching experience as volunteer didactic assistant.

And I haven't been called by any schools yet :(

Are you applying for perio? where?
Share your thoughts and experience!

I am applying to:
-UW ( my number one choice)
-UCSF
-UTHSCSA
-UNC ( heard GREAT reviews about this program)
-UConn
-Harvard (ugh expensive... but... it is Harvard! I have a friend taking Perio there, he loves the school)
-USC
-Loma Linda ( dont know why I applied here... Kind of my least favorite option. Super expensive, same price as Harvard basically. But not such a famous name. I heard they are very opened to accept international students...)

USC: very expensive school. It is very strong in implant dentistry (placement, treatment planning, restoration, ridge augmentation, sinus lift etc). The prosth dept refer most their implant cases to the perio dept. One unique thing about the program is they only do autogenous bone (and soft tissue) grafts. At USC, you won’t use cadaver bone, synthetic bone, alloderm….no membrane, no guided tissue regeneration either.

Uconn: the current director at Uconn did his perio residency at USC so I assume that his teaching style is very similar to that of USC. I heard that they also teach the perio residents doing IV sedation.

Hello. How about BU, Tuft, NYU and UMDNJ? I am thinking to apply next year. I would like to be a faculty member after completion of the program because I like to research and teach as well as practice. Please let me know if you have the information.

Got call from OSU for interview today.

Hi Tinna can you please tell where you did externship and internship because most of the schools does not allow FTDs for externship.

Thanks

Buddy of mine has UW and UPenn interviews

oh shoot, I am still about to sent my documents to UW. Haven't applied yet. didn't know they were already calling for interview so early.. Because their deadline is sept 1st... I know some schools have a rolling application system thought, but thought University of Washington didn't. I guess it doesn't matter much as long as I apply before deadline.
oh well lets see!
thanks!

Has anyone received an interview from Temple, Stony Brook, or Colorado?

interviewed with uconn and just waiting for a response.

I'm an average applicant. Top 1/4 of class, NBDE I 84, research asst in perio dept at my dental school, 2 perio externships, attend resident seminars once a week, and attend a monthly perio study group at state dental association.

Just so you know about Michigan interview. I externed there and this is what I heard from residents. You interview at about 7 different stations with different faculty in the AM. Then you have lunch with residents while all the interviewers meet and pretty much decide who they want. Then you meet with Hom-Lay Wang, the director of the program. He is a pretty intense personality. He will ask you what makes you different than all the rest of the interviewers so be ready to give a good answer - meaning he'll pinpoint all your low points in the application and you will have to tell him why you're better. The interesting part is that he's pretty much made his decision already and he may even tell you at that point whether you're in. Just something to know, he's into the idea of making your CV better when you graduate. Also, keep in mind that even though UMichigan is very research oriented school, he doesn't really think so. Best of luck to all who interview there.

Can anybody compare the two for me? If (hypothetically) accepted to both, where would you go? Thanks!

University of Louisville on Friday August 21 :)

Hi AAGi

Thanks

hi, does anyone know about the average salary of a periodontist in US? or know if any website that i could check average salary of different specialties? thanks.

Shaby, I thought Ortho and Pedo (based on your previous posts) were your passion to attempt pursuit in a specialty. Is a big mistake to specialize for the money, but well, why not try to OMFS or endo too, just FYI there are some GPs that make more than some specialists, Has even a well known oral path that makes more than ortho
but you can decide what to do for the rest of your life getting more info at the ADA website or even dig from the IRS they probably have some stats there too

Shaby odep is right, don't try to specialize for the money big mistake. I thought I wanted to do OS bad when I was in dental school and had the grades and boards scores too. But for personal reasons I ended up in General practice. I can say that I now make more than some specialists in town but decided that I love ortho and am willing to go back to school for it (and be a poor student again :().
If you cann't decide what you like to do, then go practice general dentistry for a few years. It will make you more mature and understand yourself better to decide what you really like to do.

If money is a concern to you then go to GP. the top 5% performing GPs have the potential to make more then the 50th percentile of specialists (rough guess) not to mention you're making money right our of school without more yrs of school and student loans (good head start).

Thanks for following all my posts and concerns odep pedo!!!!!! BUT if I have to explain!!! I have to tell you that I just asked this question only out of curosity and to answer a friend's questions!!!!! That's it!! Again thanks for being so concerned, but I just asked for a number and didn't ask or advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now if you could only leave the thread to someone who could really help and is willing to I would really appreciate that !!!!!

Did I hit a nerve Shaby?
I don't follow ALL your posts, I don't even follow ANY of them, it just that is so clear that you are trying to specialize for the wrong reasons and can't (or won't) see it . even other folks (i.e) Klingon noticed that too, what amazes me is that you openly post these shallow questions here (SDN) and expect sympathy, Don't any of your classmates know how the system works, or have any faculties that could guide you in this process? Just read past posts and you will see that now and then students like yourself of even sometimes pre-dental have the same questions, never changes. and FYI I was just answering your posts because a friend asked me too, c'mon

Hi AAGI

Thanks a lot buddy for the info. Your stats are awesome. You might have worked real hard for this and surely you deserve the program.

All the best
